Cafe Sole - Key West
Café Solé has captured the hearts and palates of locals and visitors lucky enough to discover this culinary gem off the beaten path. By combining his French mastery of sauces with fresh locally caught seafood, John has created a menu unlike any on the island, where every dish is bursting with indescribable flavors. Mutton snapper in pesto and champagne, yellowtail in a beurre blanc of lobster or a rare hog snapper with red pepper zabaglione top a list of nightly specials. As for the classics, the Duck a L'Orange, Rack of Lamb with herb de Province and Lobster Bouillaise are as authentic as you will find this side of Paris. "Celebrated my birthday there May 2013. I was intrigued by the specialty, Hogfish with a cream sauce...wow....so good....buttery flavor melting in my mouth, delicious. The wine recommended by Michael our waiter was superb. I will dine here again next trip to Key West, for sure. The lima beans and mashed potatoes accompanying the fish was also very tasty. You wont be disappointed if you trybthis hidden gem of a restaurant, off the beaten path, quiet, and away from the noise of Duval Street."

"We heard about this restaurant from a shop owner. She said it was the best on the Island. She was spot on! Food was outstanding, service was very good and attentive. We have had good meals througout the vacation but some items were hit and miss. Not here! Everything was excellent and although in the upper price range on the Island, the quality and consistency beat other upscale cafes around. We will recomend and be back. Steve Milwaukee"

"Food was very good, atmosphere was delightful. Complaint is about service. We were 4 people, all locals taking advantage of a Locals' Special--50% off the bill. We paid reasonable prices for Café Sole's normally expensive menu items, but when the waiter gave us the bill, he told us that an 18% tip had been automatically added, based on the NORMAL menu prices. This policy was not explained until we got the bill. We felt we should have been told this when we told the waiter that we were locals. We are not complaining about the amount of the tip, but are complaining that the policy was not explained earlier. No mention on the menu of a tip being automatically added to the bill--neither the amount of the tip or what it was based on.."

"We dine at Cafe Sole during every trip to KW but this was the 1st time we dined inside-we had what was almost a private booth and enjoyed the atmosphere immensely. Start with the Baked Artichoke with crabmeat-a true delight and cooked perfectly. I had the Lobster Bouillabaise-don't let the price scare you-it is worth it and one of the best dishes you will ever have-full of flavorful shrimp, lobster, mussels, scallops, grouper and veggies. My partner had the Hog Snapper-again, full of flavor and cooked to perfection. Dessert was Zabaglione-try this egg custard based dessert for a real treat. Cafe Sole is one of our favorite places in KW."

"Certainly one of the better restaurants in Key West. But it is pricey and thus one is entitled to have high expectations. While the experience was very good, we just could not shake the feeling that the wow factor to which the prices entitled us just was not met. Having said that, two items were delicious. The conch carpaccio was excellent. Thin slivers of conch made it easy to eat and the full conch flavors were there to enjoy. The hogfish was perfectly prepared and tasty. Wines are very expensive. The choices by the glass were not great and my attempt to find a "bargain" ($32) bottle failed."

"Cafe Sole is truly one of the best restaurants in Key West. The wait staff is very friendly while remaining professional.
Their hogfish entree is probably the best fish I have eaten, just amazing. If you have never had hogfish it is a must. I spear them myself so I am qute familiar with these fish. The prepartion at Cafe Sole is quite special. And on top of that the piece of fish is enormous.
We ordered 4 appetizers- Escargot, Ostrich medalions, conch ceviche and a red pepper soup. All were very good but the ostrich and the conch stood out as my favorites.
If you go to Key West, get off Duval Street, take a walk through Old Town and head to Cafe Sole for a dinner you will not soon forge"

"Loved the food. The service was a lacking. It was chilly at the tables due to the fact that the fans were running at top speed. It looked like the other diners were chilly as well, so when I asked if the fans could be slowed, we were told that they had to be off or on, and were that everyone didn't want them off - there were only 2 other tables, and the ladies at each table were donning their sweaters and shawls. We asked for coffee and the server said it would be a few minutes because he was brewing a fresh pot, then 20 min later when we asked where our coffee was, he said, "Yeah, I guess it's ready by now". It was ready all right...it was starting to get stale. Then he only brought out 1 cup - we ordered 2."

"We had 4 small plates for 2 of us as Easter dinner. The food was so good that it was memorable, as was the wine. We sat in a covered outdoor area that was again perfect. As many restaurants as there are in Key West, we will go back there before our vacation is over."

"Instead of announcing the specials of the day our waiter insisted to read items of the menu and telling us what we should order: The beet salad is fantastic and so is the portobello soup...for an entrée, I recommend...." Thanks, I don't really need to know what YOU like, and I have a menu to make my choices. Furthermore, we don't like beets!! He even tried to recommend a wine without knowing what we wanted! Their special fish was (unfortunately) overcooked and mushy. But, the joke of the night was when we asked for the price of the Florida lobster: without even a wink...our waiter announced that for 8 ounces it will cost $49....At that price, he better tell us that he has been fishing it with his bare hands."

"Food was very good...had fish dishes. We were disappointed in the service. The receptionist was very nice but the waiter set up was not working for us. Our main server was not friendly and his assistant did most of the work. It did not make for a great dining experience."

"Our favorite Key West restaurant.Located in a quiet neighborhood at the corner of Frances St. and Southard, on my bicycle path. The food is always fresh and consistantly good. Service is very good. We have always enjoyed inviting our friends, who are visiting Key West for the first time, to join us for dinner at Cafe Sole. We know that they will not be disappointed."

"Have eaten at Cafe Sole twice in the last couple weeks and both experiences were tremendous. The Hogfish Snapper, seafood pasta dish, and duck were all excellent. Service is always very good -- attentive, knowledgeable and pleasant. Love this restaurant; it is one of our favorite in Key West."

"I would give this place more than five stars if I could. The food was outstanding. The portobello soup is worthy of its reputation and everything else we had was delicious. The chef/owner came out and spoke with us. He is charming and fun and has a fascinating background and training which probably explains why the menu is so varied."
