Townhouse Bar and Grill
From the Emeryville fireman's dream of a Speakeasy that he built in 1926, to Steve Vernetti, the original Townhouse Speakeasy bartender who along with his family ran it for 35 plus years after Prohibition ended, the TH has been and remains an East Bay institution.
Next came the 70's and 80's when country and western bars, music and dancing were at their peak and the theme at the TH. This period is fondly remembered by Cal graduates who continue to visit the Townhouse and reminisce about their dancing days but do not miss the peanut shells and sawdust on the floor.
1990 was the year that Ellen Hope Rosenberg, the current executive chef and owner, took over an ailing TH and resurrected it from top to bottom. From her inspired American-California style menu to the maintenance of the original construction both in and out. This is a restaurant that has a unique story whose food and ambiance is as authentic as the staff are courteous and genuine.

"I was recommended the Buffalo chicken salad tho was warned it was not low cal. I ordered it anyway and thought it was fantatsic. The maitre' de was informative, the waiter was cute and funny and the whole ambience was so nice."

"We went there saturday night made reservations and were seated immediately, service was a little slow but our server was very knowledgable and professional. I had their Salmon special and my wife ordered their vegetarian tortelini. Both were very very good.

"We came here for a Father's Day dinner and the people and service was excellent. We had the stuffed mushrooms, which were okay. Wish it had more flavor and I now wish we tried another appetizer. The special was salmon over mashed potatoes and the salmon was very good. I didn't care for the diced tomato topping, but it was alright. My husband ordered the fish and chips and it delicious. The service was excellent and our waiter was very attentive."

"Really liked the history and decor, spacing of tables, patio view, service was great, menu had something for everyone. Our threesome had: grilled veggie platter, sweet potato fries, ribs, couscous-shrimp salad and all was quite good. All in all a very good experience, just a little pricey."

"Upon arrival, hostess was on the phone and kept me waiting for 3 mins. Another couple entered after me. A server came over and than another, but while I was giving my reservation information the other couple (without reservation) was seated first. The hostess was still on the phone.
While waiting for my companion, I asked to be seated by the window. It was near a large group and my companion wanted to move. We took a table across the room and were not told there would be another large group seated near us shortly later. We didn't want to make another move so we endured.
Was not my best visit here but the food was wonderful so I will give it another chance."

"The Town House is a neighborhood Gem. A group of five Emeryville neighbors were going out to listen to a Jazz performance. Stopped in at the Town House first for drinks and shared multiple dishes. All good. The service and co -operation of servers and kitchen staff was outstanding."

"This is the second time that we have went to Townhouse. It was great both times. The food was really good, and worth the money. And here is at tip, if you want to check it out, but don't want to spend over $20 for a plate. They offer a burger for less than $15. Over all it was a great place for dinner and conversation."

"This was my second time at Townhouse. I pleased to find out that they periodically change the menu so it is not a static selection. We enjoyed out drinks and food and the lively atmosphere, although I call "energetic" noise level very loud. There was a large TV above the bar with a sports game on, but I didn't find it distracting. Our waitress was attentive. It would be fun to eat outside on the deck on some rare hot summer evening."

"We hadn't eaten here for years and then "rediscovered" it a few months ago. It's a staple for us. The menu has some items which are standards there and then others that change frequently. Last night I had the summer squash ravioli and it was fabulous. The service is always good and we love the atmosphere. Nice to have the parking lot behind it, even if it IS a bit small."

"Hidden away on a lesser street behind somewhat confusing parking and side entrance through a courtyard lies Townhouse. The insides of this once-was speakeasy have been carefully renovated showcasing the structural wooden trusses and columns. There is a long bar at one end the kitchen at the other and two dining area (one sunken). The menu changes frequently and they really excel at slow-cooked meats - carnitas tacos with coleslaw and coconut BBQ ribs were both exceptional standouts. Salads are good. Yet to find a dessert that was worth it. Some great cocktails, and reasonable beer and wine selection. Attentive, friendly service. A great choice if you find yourself in Emeryville."

"Our reservations were for 6:45 on a Wednesday night. When we arrived it was very full and very lively atmosphere. After that first seating started to leave, it was pretty empty.
We had the special prime rib and it was delish! Also had the lemon pudding which was very good - light and sinfully delicious. Not too sweet either.
Our waitperson was pleasant but seemed distracted and seemed also to spend a lot of time talking to patrons at the bar. We got the wrong dessert delivered to our table by someone from the kitchen who placed it on the table and was gone in a flash before we realized it was the wrong dessert. Since our waitperson was getting chummy at the bar, we had to flag down someone else to get it changed."

"I've had dinner here numerous times and the prime rib is one of the best that I've had. So much that the entire table ordered the same thing the last three dinners we've had there. This recent occasion was for lunch with my mother and aunt. I had never been there during lunch and it was packed with business men and women and LOUD business talk. It was hard for us to hear each other at our own table however we still enjoyed the service by our waiter who was attentive, detailed in description of our orders and of course the apps and food was awesome!! The ambiance did change when the business people left and it was extremely quiet in the restaurant. Reservations encouraged!"

"I have eaten here several times, always at lunch time. The food has always been consistently excellent, but then so has the speed of the service. For a restaurant that is in the heart of a business area frequently clientele has a time restriction for lunch. The problem has always been that either it takes a while for someone to take an order or to get back to the table later with the bill. It's not that it's a slow unhurried atmosphere, it just seems they need some more help at lunch. But in spite of the delays, the food just keeps bringing us back."

"Great menu, wonderful specials, 'hefty' Mojitos. 3 appetizers for 4 of us was perfect. Menus and drink order were first, entrees arrived shortly after appetizers were lip-smackingly-consumed. Waitress was very attentive (the reason for an early seating catches everyone while they'r still fresh and before the ever-efficient kitchen and wait-staff get a tad overwhelmed, which happens to MOST kitchens when the 7:30, 8:00, 8:30pm diners show up en masse.
Overall, Townhouse is a great place for any occasion, special or otherwise, including Happy Hour (must-try: Avocado Bruschetta). There's something for everyone!

"We have been to the Townhouse before and love the food here. My husband says that this restaurant makes the best ribs in the world..and they are served with yummy sweet potato fries and cole slaw. (The bones on his plate, at the end of dinner, were totally clean!) I had the shrimp served on a Mexican style salad, topped with guacamole..and it was fantastic. I would recommend this place because the food is delicious, the service is very good and we feel very comfortable dining here."

"Our party of 4 became a party of 5 at the last minute. The staff could accomodate us immediately with a little shifting of tables. No delay, and our reservation time was met. We were nicely greated and a manager checked on us during our meal. The waiter was friendly and knowledgeable and the kitchen was quick with appetizers and entrees. The waiter was fast and correct with the complex drink order. Water and bread arrived quickly as well. All this during a very busy (full as best I could tell) Monday night. The presentation and taste and size of portions of the entrees were appreciated by all. A very good experience as I am used to at the Town House. It is a bit noisy; you need to talk loudly to be heard at the table."

"Surprise find looking on Yelp for restaurants in Emeryille. Reviews made it a must. We were taken aback when we first saw the building because it looks old and abandoned. We had just had a very bad experience with reservations with bed and breakfast plans that we had been looking forward to and it fell completely through. Beautiful day so we chose to eat outside in the sun. Host and Wait staff are very attentive often to see if you need anything or if everything is going OK. We ordered the grilled buffalo prawns, GrilledThai steak salad, Avocado bruschetta, warm brussels sprouts an grilled tenderloin all spectacularly delicious. We will return with friends."

"The quality food and the diversity of the menu is outstanding. I have never been disappointed with anything I have ordered from the menu. The service is also great. I would highly recommend the Townhouse to anyone wanting a quality dining experience in the East Bay."

"From the time we sat down and the waiter took our cocktail order, to the time we got our dessert, everything was spot on. The menu covers all bases, but if one of the specials peaks your interest, go for it! They are always terrific."

"This was our second visit. Service was truly wonderful and attentive. Food was weird - too many sauces and odd seasonings. I ordered baby back ribs and they were sticky, sweet and really inedible. If the chef wants to know how to make ribs, he/she should try Bo's Barbecue in Lafayette as an example. My friend's fish was overcooked and, again, too many competing flavors.
Ambiance was nice & informal and staff were very helpful. Waiter forgot to bring my coffee with dessert. Later he asked if I still wanted it and said he wouldn't charge for it, which was nice."

"Unfortunately our dining experience was marred by the next table being extremely loud. The table was 4 adults and 2 children. One adult did not stop talking the entire time and we could not talk over his very loud voice. Plus the 2 year old child behaved like a 2 year old, banging toys and shouting. Don't people believe in baby sitters anymore?"

"I've never had a bad meal here. The food is really good and there is something for everyone. However, I was disappointed with the service this time around. We barely saw our waitress and trying to get our water glasses filled seemed to be an inconvenience."
