Restaurant Reviews for Bones

Bones reservations Bones

701 Grant Street
Denver, CO 80203

Complementary valet offered.Bones is open for Lunch Monday-Friday from 11am-2pm.Tight and energetic, Bones is a chef-inspired noodle bar in the heart of Governor's Park. Our windowed corner spot features an eclectic collection of beers, premium sakes, and wines to compliment a menu that changes daily to offer food as comforting as house-crafted steamed buns and pork belly-topped udon to the more exotic roasted bone marrow. With counter dining for those who love the action of a completely open kitchen, or more intimate tables nestled along the wall, Bones has the amenities of a fine-dining establishment--excellent service, beautiful food--but priced and toned for a more lively experience. Bones is now open for lunch, all lunch reservations will be handled in house only.

Review 4 for Bones

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"All in all, Bones was good. However, I find it hard to justify $14-17 for a bowl of noodles. We did have the steamed buns appetizer with the pork belly that was amazing. The noodle bowls, however, were nothing to get that excited about. You could get a similar dish at any Pho restaurant for half the price. I think I would come back, sit at the bar, and have a beer and some steamed buns. I would not rush back for the noodles though."

Review 9 for Bones

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I love Bones. I think it's extraordinary. The food is wonderful. The staff lovely and thoughtful. Probably my favorite restaurant in Denver, overall. I've been at least half a dozen times now and will return soon. I have only one complaint: the maitre-d is always, always, pretentious and rude. Seriously. Everything else is lovely..."

Review 10 for Bones

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Our current goal is to make sure we experience all four of Frank Bonanno's restaurants. And what a fabulous goal it is. Bones is beyond words terrific in every way. The menu is creative and unique. The staff is knowlegeable and can describe choices in detail. We had 2 appetizers and split the lobster ramen. Words fail me to describe how great this was."

Review 14 for Bones

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"This is a fun restaurant with an interesting menu although a little pricey depending on your choices. The service was very attentive and the food was delicious. We had the Peking duck which was stellar if a little small on the portion. Sit at the counter or away from the door if you're visiting in the winter. Great place to get a variety of dishes and share."

"Bones is the BEST! I was happy to return a second time to try some new things (the jicama salad, the duck/corresponding noodle bowl and the ginger snap ice cream, all of which were on the 5280 menu) and to experience a former favorite (the steamed buns - bones this time). Delicious!!"

"It's the noodle bowl that I really enjoyed. Everyone at the table had their spoons in my bowl to make sure they got a taste. And those steamed pork belly buns are always amazing. Well done! Review 22 for Bones

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"If you're going to Bones in the winter when you have to sit indoors, wear something warm that you don't care about. Warm because every time the door opens you'll feel a blast of cold air from the outside. Something you don't care about because you'll never get the smell of fried food out and you're likely to drip noodle juice down your front.

Putting aside the above, we had a decent time at Bones but won't rush back. I'd describe it as a fun local place that's trying to be interesting. The noodle bowls are innovative, if hard to eat. They would do just as well with half the soup and smaller bowls. With most Asian cuisines it's normal to pick the bowl up and hold it close to the mouth while eating and slurping. Not possible at Bone

"Been searching for a great Asian noodle restaurant since moving here from San Francisco and have found it. The service was excellent and the food was very good. The place was packed and it is not huge - so you may not be able to have a pre-dinner drink at the bar easily but it is definitely on our short-list of great Denver restaurants."

"What we ate was delicious, and everything else on the menu looked very intriguing. Only complaint is that it's not bigger--tables are cramped, capacity is low. 5280 special was a great way to get us in the door. So much turnover of establishments in Denver, we hardly know what's around anymore."

Review 26 for Bones

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Denver's best noodle bar. Staff knowledgeable and attentive. The room is small and there is little in the way of sound absorbing material so be prepared for an 'energetic' ambient noise level when its crowded. The deconstructed crab wontons were outstanding as were the escargot potstickers. The udon noodle/pork shoulder and lobster noodle bowls were both also outstanding. Another home run spot from the Mizuna/Luca d'Italia crew...."

Review 29 for Bones

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The food was good. We had steamed bun for appetizer, the pork belly filling was remarkable. However, the dough was thick and sticky, seems like it was only made 6 hours ago. I am not sure if that how the dough suppose to be stick, but compare to the steamed buns I had at dim sum is not very soft. Our entree were great and the ginger snap soft serve was delicious. I think it will be better if there is a little more ginger in the soft serve or is top with crystallized ginger. Our waiter has an attitude. He acts like he is better than us, he had no smile on his face and was not friendly. Overall I gave it 3 1/2 stars."

Review 38 for Bones

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Well 2010 starts off with a bang. Bones is a little place off of 7th and Grant that will surprise you. I wasn't sure what to expect when we walked in. I knew it was noodles and got one of the best new restraints of 2009 in 5280. we sat down and looked over the menu, started with cocktails. I got the Green Tea Press and my wife got the Suntory Manhattan. Both were very good, not to strong and mixed well.

Next we Picked some streamed suckling pig seam buns to start. there was more surprises when they came out. I was expecting just some regular seam buns like you would get at dim sum. But it was much better, the sweet bread was folded in 1/2 and pulled pork surved with a hoisin sauce.

Then we got our noodles. I had ordered the Udon ( Slo

"The pork belly buns were amazing as was the lobster ramen. Drinks were expenxive, but delicious - especially the Perfect Daquiri. The space is small and there is very little room to wait for a table - however, the little space there is is used well. We will definitely be going back!"

"An excellent restaurant! I small asian themed restaurant, it has a simple menu that can change daily, yet the flavors are rich, complex, and delicious. My wife loved the specialty drinks and I loved the selection of excellent sake. I has a casual atmosphere, but you might want to make reservations because it is a small place. We'll definitely be heading back there!"

Review 43 for Bones

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We are big fans of Frank Bonnano...and found Bones a bit off from his typical standards. The fries were not crisp. The potstickers were not crisp. The Vietnamese coffee was really just American coffee with condensed milk. But the marrow bones were great, the pork buns delicious and the ramen and soba very good.
We were cold the entire time we were there (I know there's no easy fix to this--constant front door opening brings in the cold), so will probably not return during cold weather.

Review 44 for Bones

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I like the juxtaposition of the ramen noodles being the most expensive thing on the menu. They're really good. The pork buns were respectable taste-wise, but trying too hard with the presentation. Service was attentive without being overbearing. Our table was near the door, and we froze every time someone entered. A vestibule would be perfect."

"This was my first time at Bones. I had previously dined at Mr. Bononno's other restaurants and have always had good experiences. Bones is a nice gem of a place to have a fun lunch. The location is great and the decor is pleasant. It would be a bit loud for a large group.

Overall, I would recommend this and would go back.

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The menu at Bones is brief but the offerings are all excellent; the wait staff is attentive, helpful, and pleasant.
At peak lunch hour it's crowded and noisy in an upbeat kind of way. On the downside, you may wait a while for a table, even with a reservation. Beware the southwestern-most table right beside a rack of wine bottles: quarters are close and it's hard not to jostle the wall art with an elbow.

Review 53 for Bones

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The appetizers were the star at Bones. The noodle bowl concept is intriguing, but for what it is bowls were over priced and so are the drinks. By the time you have a drink or two, eat some appetizers and have a noodle bowl you have spent upwards of $50 per person. One of the members at the table was convinced the noodles weren't home made...they make no claims, but for the price the extra effort should be assumed. I liked the restaurant & atmosphere... small neighborhood feel, but if you are a noodle fan, a trip to Federal Blvd and a Pho bar would be a lot easier on the pocket book."

Review 58 for Bones

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The food at Bones is great, but the surroundings leave a lot to be desired. I had the sticky buns with suckling pig and the ramen with lobster. Both were delicious. The sticky buns were rich, dense, and flavorful. The touch of hoisin was just right to add a little kick. The ramen was great. The miso broth was light and flavorful. The noodles were firm.

The problem was the ambiance. It was loud and cramped. When you pay that much for a meal, you hope you can enjoy it in an atmosphere that enhances the experience. That was not the case at Bones.

I will go back, but I will wait six months for the buzz to wear off with the hope that I will be able to enjoy the conversation as much as I enjoy the food.

Review 60 for Bones

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"We were excited to try Bones given the press in 5280. However, my wife and I were both disappointed in the food. My wife and I bowl had noodle bowls and thought they were OK but not exceptional. Given the press and high prices for the noodle bowls ($13-17), we felt the taste of the food didn't warrant the high prices. The cocktails were all $10-12, which is higher than almost most higher end restaurants in town. The restaurant is small and gets many cold drafts given the single entry door and the proximity of the front door to most of the tables. The place would be fine if the drinks were cheaper (say $8) and the noodle bowls were $10-13 but we felt the prices weren't in line the restaurant atmosphere and quality of food."

"Overall this was a great restaurant, the food was both interesting and delicious and there was nothing on the menu which could easily be found anywhere else. The only issue I had with the culinary aspect was the amount of food given and the fact that it was semi-lukewarm by the time I received it despite it having been made in front of me; my date's dish did not have this issue and neither did our appetizers. Aside from this there were no other issues, I would gladly eat there again but perhaps order a different menu item."

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"My wife and I ate at Bones in the spring just after it opened. Perhaps is was the ginger beer, but the experience seemed more consuming, the food better and the service more attentive. We just took 2 family members from San Francisco there because the chef, Frank Bonanno, was nominated fora national award for cooking achievement. We couldn't have been more disappointed. The pork belly lacked any decadent fat marbling, the potatoes 3 ways were extraordinarily ordinary and the infamous broth of my udon noodles lacked depth, flavor or any semblance of rich, garlic effervescence. This time, however, I cannot blame the Trumer, nor the goblet-full of tequila had at Lancer's next door. 1st impressions can ruin a follow-up visit! Take note!"

"Food was great. We were disappionted that they had discountinued their happy hour. I had checked their web page the same day and the happy hour was still listed on the lunch menue but when we got there we were informed it was the first day they were not doing the happy hour. Our waiter was nice and gave us happy hour drinks anyway, but the people we were introducing to the resturant were disapointed."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I lived in Japan and I've been looking for a good noodle place for awhile. When I saw an article that Bones was opening in a magazine, I was very excited to try it. My husband had the Udon noodles and I tried the Ramen noodles. Both very delicious, but the Udon noodles tasted very similar to pork soba I had in Japan. The service was excellent!! I will definitely come back to try other dishes."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"As soon as the Lancer Lounge people die out, Frank Bonanno will have an opportunity to "corner" the market with all his fine restaurants. What a great idea--one stop for all his restaurant supply needs. And for the customer, well-- pick a country.

The food at Bones was tasty. We especially liked the add an egg to your noodle bowl. Had dessert at Mizuna which is always a treat. Overall we had a splendid time. Yum!!

"We got there and were left standing in the doorway for 20 minutes while the hostess said our table wasn't ready yet. Finally she just said she didn't have any idea how long it would be, so we left. Miserable experience overall, I would never come back."

Review 81 for Bones

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Indeed Bones is hot as a roasted marrow bone, soft and lovely, but perhaps a victim of its own success. We had a reservation but had to wait over thirty minutes for a table because they have difficulty anticipating how long diners will take. they indicated to us that people are dining now (appy, entre, desert) and not just eating a quick noodle bowl and they need to figure this out. Nonetheless, killer eats in a busy locale. On a cold night a table near the door was too cold for comfort as well. A few kinks to work out but great food quality."

Review 82 for Bones

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"OMG! I think this may very well become one of my favorite restaurants in central Denver. Used to be a small neighborhood coffee shop that I frequented every Saturday morning. Now it's a small neighborhood restaurant (and I do mean small). Food is AWESOME! Service is SPECTACULAR! Chris, the owner-manager, and the rest of the staff were very attentive and friendly. The restaurant has maybe 12-14 seats at the bar and maybe 8-9 tables, so don't plan to go with a group of over four people--there's just no place to put them (well, maybe with enough advance notice they could make one long table, but oi, would it be crowded!). Seats near the door are cold when the door opens. No place to hang out and wait for table so they send you to Mizuna. Fine!"

Review 83 for Bones

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Really a great experience. I think if you are expecting just a "normal" noodle bar you might be disappointed. But if you want to see a chef (and his vision) push beyond the normal comfort zone and are intrigued by familiar ingredients and tastes that take you in a whole new direction....then you will not be let down. The staff was great, energetic, and very welcoming. We were seated quickly for our reservation (never a given) and the pace of the meal was spot on. Kudos to the drink/wine/ and cocktail selection. Very well thought out. With Mizuna, Luca, and now Bones, there might not be another corner in the Denver area with as much culinary importance and excellence. Several more visits planned....hopefully soon."

Review 84 for Bones

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Bones was fantastic. We tried three different noodle bowls, all were tasty with the udon noodle being the favorite. Steamed buns, eggrolls, salad and pumpkin soft serve ice cream were also standouts. The only less than outstanding factor was our waiter who seemed distant all evening. The presence of the general manager of the restaurant helped to fill in the waiters missteps, he was on top of everything with a smile on his face. He was happy to answer any questions vs. the waiter who seemed put out by that."

Review 85 for Bones

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"As a long-time Frank Bonanno fan, we were very excited to try Bones. The open kitchen adds great energy, but there was an overwhelming smell of "deep fried" when we walked through the door. The green tea infused cocktail, while pricey, was very unique. We'd heard a lot about the steamed pork buns, and they didn't disappoint. The lobster ramen was very buttery, almost too buttery, and needed a good dose of chili sauce to cut the richness. It was tasty, though $90 for dinner for two (with no wine OR dessert) seemed a little steep for a few drinks, an app, a salad and couple of bowls of ramen. I'd expect to spend that kind of cash at Mizuna, but not at Bones."

"The food is excellently paired and every bite is delicious. My only complaint is there is way too much of a draft by the door. Every time the door is opened (about every 2 minutes) I have to stop eating because I'm shivering too much. Maybe a heat lamp by the door would eliminate this problem. Would this stop me from coming in? Heck no."

"Fab new restaurant. The food was great! Definitely start with the sticky buns. The drinks were also a nice surprise for restaurant cocktails -- they put some thought into them. One of our noodle bowls lacked a bit of flavor, but the hot sauce they provided added just the right kick. Look forward to coming back soon!"
