"I have a very special thanks to the management and staff. This was to be a special occasion for my family and that was not only acknowleded, but prepared for! The flowers, wine, and especially the personalized menues was so AWESOME! I thank you sincerely for your thoughtfulness and I will definately recommend this restaurant as a "must" to anyone that is traveling to the Washington area.
The extra bonus was the food. Excellent on all accounts.

"We were celebrating our two-year anniversary and the decision to dine at the Occidental Grill & Seafood was a great choice. Our salmon and tuna entrees were perfectly prepared, and the crab cake appetizer was amazing. The staff was very attentive, and after dinner they dropped off a signed card saying "Happy Anniversary" which we were very touched by the gesture. We will definitely come back again."

"The food at the Occidential Seafood and Grill was outstanding. However, the service was questionable. My wife and I could not understand why a group of three that next to our table, and who arrived almost 15 minutes after our arrival was served their meals before ours. In fact, we questioned our waiter who informed us that we ordered a dish that took some time to prepare. However, the dish that was in question was the same dish ordered by the table who was served first. When the waiter realized his mistake, he offered no apology. We did not push the issue any further because we wanted were enjoy our evening and the special occasion at hand. Finally, it was our first time dinning at the Occidential."

"Recently, my husband and I celebrated his birthday at the Occidental. My husband has lived most of his life in the DC area but has not been to the Willard Hotel in over 40 years. I can tell you it won't be another 40 years until we visit you again. The food was superb and the customer service friendly and attentive. We had a wonderful dinner . . . Thank you!"

"Overall, I though the food was good. It was not exceptional in anyway, but it is worth visiting and I would probably make a return visit. Good solid dining experience, but I think the place is understaffed because the service was a bit slow and that took away from the star rating. Decent wine list too."

"In all fairness to the restaurant we were late and as such couldn't fully enjoy the ambience which was lovely since we had theater tickets. That said, I thought the filet mignon was very tasty and tender. However, the warm beet salad was just so-so and the crab cake appetizer had entirely too much filler. I thought the prices were a little steep especially since the entrees came ala carte. For the money, it wouldn't kill the restaurant to serve a few vegetables with each entree. My filet mignon came with one little tiny potato ball."

"My boyfriend and I went to Occidential as a last minute resort for Valentine's Day. The Prix Fixe menu was not only overpriced, but the food was TERRIBLE!!! We were served chilled lobster tails that were chewy like chewing gum from being overcooked and were without any seasoning or sweetness. It reminded me of the dried imitation crab meat that's often in salad bars at the grocery store. The petite filet steak was truly "petite" by all means, my boyfriend likened it the size of a Wendy's junior burger patty. And the steak was without any flavor or imagination. Overall the food was boring and did not excite either of our palates. The desert taste like mashed cholate Hostess cupcakes from a vending machine. DO NOT waste your money!!!"

"Arrived in Washington at 2pm and went to dinner at the Occidental at 7pm so I was just getting very tired and needed not to be stressed and luckily, with the marvelous waitress, whose name I shamefully can't remember, it was a lovely dinner. I asked for suggestions and guidance from this charming woman, went with her suggestions, and had a lovely meal.
It was very quiet when we went which suited us fine.
The Crab cake was meteoric, and the suggested Virginian wine was unexpectedly fine.
My only, very small, complaint would be that we ordered Martini's and didn't have time to even sip them before the food arrived. But it was a fine Martini.
If you are visiting Washington DC, I would seriously recommend the Occidental."

"A beautiful restuarant located in the magnificent Willard hotel in Washington. This Hotel is where Abraham Lincoln and his family stayed and dined during the week before his first Inauguration. Many artifacts of it all are on display there. The waitress was wonderful and well informed about the Occidental's history and even gave us a short tour of its historical highlights, after she took pictures of us (for us, at our request) enjoying out lunch.
We requested and were seated at a special historical booth and also were given a packet of print outs about the history of the Occidental. All just wonderful and the lobster roll and french fries were delicious, too!"

"I guess our dining experience was rather unique which would explain my average grading of this restaurant. Tip to everyone: call ahead during restaurant week to ask if they will also be offering their full menu! I had no idea it was last week when I made the reservation and The Occidental apparently does not include its full menu, which was very disappointing. Overall I have had better experiences there but this one will serve as lesson, to never dine there again during restaurant week."

"Loved the decor with all the famous pictures on the walls, many of them signed. Food was very good, presentation was exceptional, portion sizes are as expected small. My wife had the scallop trio which was three scallops prepared three different ways which was exceptional in flavor. The wine list was exceptional over $100, but limited in the moderately priced wines. There were many menu items that we both would like to try, my wife and I will be back, possibly even to sit at the bar and enjoy several of the appetizers."

"I have never been to the restaurant before but every year I have a Birthday party during Restaurant week at a new restaurant. I cannot rave enough. The food was outrageous, the service impeccable,the room beautiful. My friends have all written or called to say the same.I cannot wait to go again."

"This was my first dining experience at the Occidental Grill. We enjoyed the historic context of the dining room, where we were surrounded by portraits of well known faces. It was very loud and difficult to talk, certainly not a spot for a quiet romantic evening. The food was nicely presented, but found the meat very fatty. We ordered dessert at the beginning of the meal, but when the time came to serve it, they had run out. That was a disappointment . The service was very mediocre, as the restaurant was very busy that night.

All in all an enjoyable evening, but don't think we would rush back."

"The service was good but the food options and quality was subpar for restaurant week. They ran out of the duck sausage, which was one of the few choices we liked. The fish with panko bread crumbs was decent but the waitstaff sprinkled a lot of black pepper on just one side of the fish instead of dispersing it. Entrees were okay. Desserts unimpressive. I expected better food and am confused how so many politicians have eaten there."

"Unfortunately, my disappointment with The Occidential started when we walked in the door and both hostesses were on the phone and neither recognized or greeted us. The Restaurant Week meal was sparce and needed some taste. When the bill came, and we spent $60 for food and $80 for drinks for 2 of us, that was very disturbing. $17 for a Manhatten and $15 for a Cosmopolitan in martini glasses was outrageous! And then we had to make another special trip back to the restaurant because the hostess who brought us our coats (and made us put them on)never bothered to ask us if we needed our parking validated. I will not be returning to The Occidential. Not when there are many other good choices in DC!"

"I love the Occidental. It's comfortable without being ridiculously trendy, not too clubby, the food is excellent, and the service spot-on. And in the summer it has one of best outdoor cafes in D.C. Plus, the location at the Willard is about the most civilized in town. Over the years, the food has been consistently interesting, tasty, and fresh. For a long-established Washington restaurant, the Occidental seems to work for its reputation and doesn't just rest on past reviews."

"I must admit that the value of the meal I experienced was not worth the Restaurant Week price; had to fill up on bread to get full. I recommend the duck sausage, the scallops, and the chocolate bread pudding... all items I did not order but tried from my fellow diners and regret not ordering for myself. As for the other items on the menu... not really worth your time or the price. The soup was very earthy tasting, the salad was sparse and looked more like a garnish, the fish entree was good, the flat iron steak was tasty, and the apple tart was half an apple on filo dough and unimpressive."

"My boyfriend and I went there for a romantic dinner date and had a great time. It had a nice atmosphere and the booths give you a nice secluded romantic feel. The food in general was excellent and the service was very good. The butternut squash risotto was to die for. My boyfriend's tuna steak was a bit under done though."

"Wonderful luncheon experience. The Occidental definitely ranks as a true Washington, DC landmark and you are reminded of that when seeing the rows of photos of Washington leaders that ine the walls. This is not a plpae for those seeking a trendy "in spot" for dining. Rather, it is a classic, white-tablecloth long standing establishment that knows how to do things just right --- from courteous staff greeting you on arrival to well appointed dining tables. The food is exceptionally good and the menu lists enrees that are not the standard fare usually found in such old established restaurants. The chef shows creativity, innovativeness and variety in all the menu offerings."

"Diappointing. The food (I had duck salad which was small and overdone) was mediocre, and the bread (3 puny slices) was stale and cottony. Really not up to prior quality. The server was overwhelming--too attentive, yet ultimately she brought the wrong charge slip with a total that was twice what the check read. She corrected it, but it didn't help the experience. I expected better when I made the reservation."

"The Occidental Grill is a classic of DC, the food is excellent and the hundreds of photographs of politicos on the wall remind you that you are indeed in the capital - as if being a stone's throw from the White House could let you forget it!
We found the service somewhat perfunctory; maybe it's because of our tourist status, everyone else in the restaurant was a local - a sure sign of the restaurant's quality."

"This was my first visit to the Occidental Grill and I was pleasantly surprised. Although the menu is not the most exciting, nevertheless every dish I and my companion had were wonderful, particularly the entrees of steak and duck breast, both cooked to perfection and accompanied by delicious sauces. The service was also friendly and top-notch. The only downside is that the dining room is a little loud for my tastes. But I would definitely return based on the quality of the meal."
