"Great food. Sushi is remarkable. Sushi rice is just right - not too sweet, not too sour, not too dry, not too wet. There are very VERY few Sushi restaurants in the DC area (in the US) that can do this great rice job. Fish is, needless to say, exceptional. Lots of creative inventions in the menu."

"This place is to die for. If you are looking for a really good sushi place here in DC, then Sei is the place for you. I go there all the time and every time I go I am never disappointed. The food is excellent, the service is outstanding and the ambiance is awesome. Sei is definitely a 5 star restaurant"

"This is my third time here - love the place. First time I have actually gone for dinner. The service was impecable from the hostess to the bar to the dining room. Some of my favorites: Wasabi guacamole, Kobe tataki, Surf and turf; though I can't really say there was anything I didn't like. For drinks: I am a huge fan of the liquid wasabi. My friends drank the pear sangria and said it was very tasty."

"We thoroughly enjoyed the inclusion of off the beaten path nigiri and maki selections including seared toro and kobe tataki. Certainly on par with Makoto, Taro & Sushiko. Our waiter was excellent and attentive. The wine list was impressive in its depth of filtered and unfiltered sake selections. The only minus was a noise level too high for comfortable conversation and premium+ pricing on many items."

"Outstanding sushi selection, ranging from the usual suspects to some pretty adventurous fare. Impressive sake list. Pretty loud and a little tight in terms of closeness of tables, but well made up for by good service and great food. A touch on the pricey side of things (we cleared $100 for two people with sake), but worth the price of admission."

"I cook just about every night except Saturday, so my husband and I are always looking for places to eat out that have fresh ingredients prepared with some innovation. The food at Sei fit that bill. It was great. But the waitress, though pleasant enough, made us feel rushed. Our large plates came out just as our small plates for sushi were lifted off the table. And she took my husband's large plate away before I finished eating, and then took mine away while I was still chewing the last bite; asking if we wanted dessert. Saturday night dining is relaxed and fun for us, but this time with a 7:30 p.m.reservation, we were pulling into our driveway in Chevy Chase at 9:30 p.m. We spent as much time driving as we did dining."

"We visited SEI for an early pre-theatre dinner. It is adjacent to the Lansburgh Theater, down the street from Harman Hall and the Verizon Center so a pre-therter/event dinner is convenient. We were seated promptly upon arrival a couple of minutes after the time of our reservation. This was our first meal at SEI, and we generally followed the server's advice. The drinks were unusual, but good, one with a kick of wasabi. The cuisine is probably best described as fusion, with small plates of sushi/roll type dishes as well as small plates of tapas type preparations. Our server recommended two to three dishes per person, and that was pretty right. Ambience was pleasant and very white, if a little cramped."

"Great, funky restaurant. Feels "very New York". I had a dinner date with my boyfriend here and we both really enjoyed our food, drinks, and the overall ambiance of the restaurant. "We arrived at 6:30pm with 4 letting them know we had theater tickets at the Lansburgh at 8pm. Great ambiance. Looks a lot like sister rest Oya. Great, friendly service. Brought a little booklight to read menu better ;)nice idea. We asked whether the 3 course prix fix ($29) would get us into time trouble for the theater. Our waiter said no, but we might have entrees when the appetizers are still there. The sushi was good quality! The other food: Kobe beef balls with Udon noodles looked frankly like spaghetti and meat balls, the chicken was ok. We had expected a little more. We did have to wait a little for our entrees and had barely time for our desserts. But overall it was a nice experience. A little on the noisy side."

"This was our first visit to SEI which was recommended by friends. We were looking for a downtown Asian restaurant that featured sushi and near Penn Quarter. The fixed price choices were excellent at $29.99 and the specialty drinks were exotic and satisfying. Three pages of saki may be overwhelming but our waiter was quite knowledgeable and gave us a thorough review of the choices of interest to us. The ambiance was eclectic and upbeat. Very hot for the 20's crowd. Being next door to Shakespeare Theater is a plus. I would highly recommend SEI to my friends and business associates."

"We're regulars at Oya and thought we'd try their sister restaurant. A bit of a rocky start with the hostess, who seated us next to the front door and bar, although the rest of the restaurant was empty. We asked to be moved and she refused, but our waiter intervened and adjusted the situation. All went beautifully from there. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and helpful in ordering. Some of the best sushi we've ever had in very unusual--but delicious combinations. Our favorites were the fish and chips and the SOS (salmon and strawberry--it works!). We'll be back very soon!"

"Very good dining experience, both food and services are outstanding. I would only advise to come for early dinner because it becomes very loud when the restaurant is full.
Also the large plates are kind of "small" but may be it is because the food is so good!"

"The dining experience was very good. The quality of the sushi is excellent and the service by our waiter was exceptional. The only issue that I have with the restaurant is that because of the size of the place, it is quite cramped and very noisy. However, the food is great."

"I highly recommend this restaurant. It was VERY reasonably priced, creative menu, excellent service. The restaurant is small (maybe 30 tables) but lively. It is the first sushi restaurant I've found in DC that is worth its salt -- a much better option than wildly overpaying at other popular places."

"We really enjoyed our experience at Sei. The food had a very creative feel and you could tell that all the ingredient pairings were well thought out. I could not count the number of times the people at my table mentioned the creativeness of the food like wasabi guacamole or strawberries in a sushi role. We were a little disappointed that a number of items on the menu were unavailable by our 7pm reservation but we think this was due to the large snow storm rather than poor planning. Overall, Sei was a delightful dining experience."

"This was a fun spot. We had 9:30 p.m. reservations, but the theater let out late, and got there at 10. We had called, and it wasn't a problem. Our table was ready as promised, and the place was quite busy. The service was outstanding and even though my husband and I felt like we were the oldest people there by a lot, we were treated like the young, hip crowd that was there. Had the signature drink, liquid wasabi and it was wonderful. We ordered an appetizer, two small plates and three rolls. We liked everything, but the rolls stood out. My husband really liked the three tuna roll and I loved the fish and chips roll. We eat sushi at least once a week in NY and this was every bit as good. The place was pretty to look at as well."

"The food is just fine here. And I should say, I went for lunch, not dinner.

The room is phenomenal. And, like nearby Oya, I guess that is the point. You go to have decent food in a superb environment. This is a good place to take a date provided he or she is not a huge foodie; the food is good, not stellar.

The hostess who greeted me (dining alone at lunch - so sad) showed all the personality of an eight year old going to see the dentist - despite the place being 80% empty- but the rest of the staff were nice enough.

It is a bit pricey for lunch. I had a bento box and some sake and after tip, it hit $50. I have heard the happy hour is great and I once popped in for a late night drink and had a very good experience. I will go bac"

"I celebrated my boyfriend's birthday here and it turned out to be a great evening. When I arrived I was greeted by a very friendly host and the offer to take our coats. You have the choice of giving it to them or keeping them (I think it would be better for coat check). The place is a bit small but the atomsphere was good. Its a good place for couple to go and just with friends. The service was good... waiter was always checking up on us. My food was good, my boyfriends was good too expect he had a small plate of steak which wasn't all that good. He had loster tempura rolls which were excellent. Overall I would reccommend this restaruant to everyone I know"

"My boyfriend and I went for restaurant week and before a show at the Woolly Mammoth. We had a great experience! We mentioned that we had to make a show and the server made sure we could have been out of there in 45 minutes! We ended up ordering tea so we could stay a bit longer. For appetizers we ordered the Lobster Roll, the Fish and Chips, and the Kobe Tataki Roll, all of which were fantastic! I think they were definitely the best part of the meal. For our entrees I ordered the Dengaku Salmon and my boyfriend ordered the Short Ribs. They were good, but not as good as the sushi. For dessert we got the Chocolate Fondant, which was a bit too rich and hard for my taste and the Orange Bread Pudding, which was much better. We'll def be back!"

"We went to SEI during Restaurant Week. Our server was attentive and gracious. We really enjoyed the food, although neither one of us is a sushi enthusiast. My husband had the crispy shrimp roll and the kobi sliders, which he loved. I had the crispy shrimp roll as well, along with a spicy tuna roll, and a chef's selection of tashimi. It was delicious. Also, try the Hello Kitty cocktail- it was wonderful!"

"Loved it! I'd never had sushi before, and our waiter was helpful in explaining the offering to us (though my date is an avid sushi lover lol) The portions were perfect, and overall everything tasted excellent- except for the desserts. They left MUCH to be desired. Also, I am not a drinker- at all- but I tasted my date's "number 6" drink- and it was really good! The reviews I read about their custom beverages proved to be true! The noise level was a little high- if you are planning on having an intimate romantic convo- it may prove difficult. The restaurant itself is gorgeous though. I spent way more money than I had planned- but it was worth it! I will return again!"

"I went to Sei because it was part of DC's Restaurant Week 2010, and I loved it. For pre-dinner drinks, I got the Liquid Wasabi, which was fantastic and very different. My date and I did the Restaurant Week special for 1 and supplemented it with a few extra rolls off the sushi menu, as well as a bottle of inexpensive Sake (they have an extensive Sake selection). Highly recommend the Kobe beef Tataki roll. The presentation of the food was beautiful, our server was very attentive, and I would definitely come here again."

"Exceptional service, at check in, in the bar (helped us with the sake tasting-we learned somethings new, at the table, and on leaving. probably best service i've had recently and i am generally eating in one (or two) restaurants downtown each day. Ambiance and look of the place was really good: energetic, cool, but not too loud. The apps and entrees were very good, interesting, and diverse so meat eaters, fish eaters and veg's in our party were all happy. the sushi is first rate. Desserts, at least the chocolate cake and bread pudding, not the strong point. We live in the neighborhood and will be back, it's a very good addition to Penn Quarter."

"Our service was impeccable (server Walter and manager Aeris (sp?) My group decided to order small plates and rolls as we went along and there was no problem with that. The special sushi pizza was excellent. The yellowtail was so fresh and buttery - melted in my mouth and no soy sauce was needed. And to top it off, we ordered the bread pudding was to die for - not a spoonful of anything was left. This is definitely worth a space on anyone's "go-to" list of restaurants."

"Went for Restaurant Week and service was a little slow, but to make up for it they comped us a few drinks and we left two very satisfied customers. The "liquid wasabi" cocktail and the wasabi guacamole were delicious, and really exemplify the fascinating and uncommon flavor combinations at this place. Definitely will go again, especially for Restaurant Week."

"Because it was new Year's Eve, the place was really loud! After some of the party-goers left, conversation at our table was easier. Our waiter was excellent! Just the right mix of attentiveness and friendliness. As far as the food...it was good and interesting. SEI offers many sushi rolls that are more "clever" than the traditional sushi restaurant. The true sushi traditionalist might find the offerings too fru-fru, but it was really fun for a festive occasion! The host gave us complimentary "Liquid Wasabi" when we asked about it being served at the next table. The drink was excellent and it was a very nice gesture--will bring us back! Overall, highly recommended!"

"Very unusual and neat decor -- white leather chairs and white acrylic tables. We had the crispy shrimp specialty roll. It was fabulous. The old bay pineapple sauce on which it sat was a wonderful touch. The Asian chicken salad was very tasty. I'm anxious to get back and try more of their dishes."

"Excellent, will definitely be going there again! Went at a 6:00 on a Tuesday, so quiet time. Food was *all* delicious. Service was excellent, waiter was always there when we needed him, but never pestering or looming. Only complaint - the hostess twice tried to sit us next to loud tables. But really a very minor annoyance, and she nicely helped us anyway, so still an absolutely great experience."

"This was our first visit to Sei and we were impressed. Their sushi menu is innovative with rolls like Fish and Chips and Snow White. They also have a variety of small plates including mini Kobe Sliders, which were also delicious. We will definitely be going back for their rolls and to try other small plates!"

"Decor and ambience top notch. Service was outstanding. Our server was asked and made excellent recommendations. Attentive but not overbearing. Our party of four ordered four different appetizers and entres and we shared. The sushi and sashimi were beautifully presented, exceptionally fresh and delicious. A bit pricey but not over the top. If there was a con, and it's no big deal, it was the somewhat confusing menu."

"Excellent sushi, top notch service, energetic scene, hot decor. I had written off pork belly but Sei's version brought me back. The fish and chips roll sounds strange but is a big winner. The waiter brought complimentary dessert cocktails then really put icing on the cake by bringing our coats right to the table. The price was also fair. I will recommend this spot and go back myself."

"Our group had been to a show at Lisner and called to ask that our 9 pm reservation be moved to 9:30. The restaurant accommodated us, and even when we finally arrived at 9:45, we only had to wait about 10 minutes before they seated us.The food was good and some interesting mixes of flavors. The seaweed salad and wasabe guacamole were my favorite."
