"The whole dining experience was amazing. The servers were attentive and helpful. The food was excellent and filling. The portions were perfect sizes for the price we paid. A little expensive for an everyday hotspot, but definitely choose again for a special occasion!"

"Never been disappointed here - don't get me wrong, bring two credit cards. You don't have to ask for water, butter, extra silver etc....I took my girlfriend for our anniversary and they sat us in a booth in a smaller room, brought a personalized menu, along with a baked Alaska for us to share on the house. They do seafood, and they do it well. If you want just butter on your grilled swordfish that's OK. Add an ice cream scoop of crab and hollandaise, go for it. I guess you'd say it's similar to the Capital Grille, except most everything comes from the sea. They do have pastas and steaks, but try the selection of oysters, dover sole or the pan seared scallops."

"The experience overall was fantastic. First of all, they personalized the menu for my father's 70th birtday. The waiter did a fantastic job of recommending the perfect meals and drinks and did a great job of making sure our children felt comfortable and had a positive experience. He also ensured that some of the small details were taken care of to make everything perfect. We couldn't have asked for anything more in the evening. It will be one of the most memorable dining experiences for my family for many years."

"Service was spotty. The server was very knowledgable but couldn't keep my drink filled. Even with a reservation they still took twenty minutes to get us a table. Very loud overall to the point you couldn't talk across the table without shouting. The crab cakes were great, but the rest of the meal was average."

"The food was good, though not spectacular. The crab cakes are a reliable hit, and the panna cotta dessert was sublime. The mahi mahi and shrimp were of the same quality that one can get at many more affordable local restaurants. What can not be found elsewhere, however, is a service team like the one Oceanaire has assembled. They were a well oiled machine and their courtesy and professionalism were impeccible. Our server, Kevin, ranks among the best."

"We've been to Oceanaire twice now. Both experiences were similar. One or two really good items (e.g., crab cakes) and several other mediocre offerings. Certainly nothing memorable. From my perspective, not really worth driving downtown, paying parking and high wine prices, for seafood that is available and often better at other venues."

"We went here for Minneapolis Restaurant week with a group of friends. We started with a tray of amazing oysters and then had we all agreed were the best crab cakes we've ever had. Each of us had a different main course, I had the shrimp which were excellent and my wife had the mahi mahi (which was even better). The sides were amazing as well - especially the creamed corn, as our waiter suggested. We had a few bottles of great wine with the meal as well. Overall, excellent experience."

"As a server myself, I know that restaurant week can be stressful; however, I was disappointed when our server came up to our table and asked us if we were ready to order, without greeting the table or explaining the menu (It was everyone's first time dining at Oceanaire). The service did improve throughout the evening, but it was not at the level I expected or had heard about. The food was amazing and definitely made up for the mediocre service."

"Atmosphere is good ole boys club meets quaint Maine fresh seafood restaurant. We went for Restaurant Week because I had heard mixed reviews from many different patrons, we wanted to sample before investing; there was only the slightest hint that restaurant week patrons weren't a favorite. My crabcake, mahi mahi, and bread pudding were AMAZING; my date's oysters were not commented upon, his barracunda was strong, and the brownie sundae was succulent. Cocktails were very well mixed. Service was good; the wait assistants made a great impression, better than our server, but the overall effect was excellent. The manager made a point to stop at various tables to check in and another even brought amuse-bouche."

"I visited The Oceanaire during restaurant week and had a horrible experience. Bad enough that I will never go there ever again and I will do my best to share my experience with all my friends/family and anyone else I hear that think of going there.
Food:
My meal was overcooked to cardboard consistency. 3 of us didn't even finish our meal because it was just nasty.

Ambiance:
Ambiance was fair. It felt like I was dining at perkins or dennys. Definitely doesn't compare to what others had to offer.

Service:
Nightmare! no coat check offer. I kept getting bumped while I was eating. Hands would cut in out of no where to fill my water while I was eating and not excusing themselves! Plates were dripping everywhere when busboys cleared"

"Oceanaire was definitely a hit for Restaurant week for our group of 15. The service was amazing. We arrived for our scheduled reservation and since our table was not yet ready due to the the previous group, we were given accommodations beyond our expectation. We were served complimentary champagne while waiting. Once seated, the manager gave us appetizers freebies that was more than gave us a belly full. Serving portions were extremely decent and generous. Their crabcakes are to die for, and who wouldn't with 90% crab. Entrees were a little disappointing due to the fact that the restaurant were so busy that they ran out of the fish we wanted. Dessert made up for the meal though. All in all, it was an experience hard to forget~"

"On the website I reviewed the special offer for Restaurant Week ($30 for appetizer, entree, and dessert.) Also listed was a special, limited menu offering appetizer, salad and entree for $20.10. When I requested the 2010 menu, the wait staff stated the special offer was no longer available. He did offer my partner, who can not eat dessert, the option of ordering two appetizers and an entree.
Service was rushed, both appetizers were served at the same time, giving us the impression our business was neither needed nor appreciated.
Food was delicious. However, do not plan to order from any special menu."

"Right off the bat the bar tender had sized my date and myself up to be some kind of hooligans and was SO RUDE I couldn't believe it!! Ordered a glass of wine and he poured it and muttered the price to me.. when I didn't hand him enough money he very loudly repeated himself in a sharp tone. The wine was $15 and he didn't even let me taste it first to see if I liked it which, I didn't. Our server was a delightful man but was a little more relaxed than I would expect for a fine dining experience. Not that I minded. Finally, the food was not what I expected. Very old fashioned but still decent. My Mahi Mahi was over cooked and the seasoning on both my dish and my dates shrimp dish over powered the flavors of the fish."

"I was very excited to eat here for Restaurant Week, but I am disappointed with my experience. My entree (trout amandine)lacked flavor. However, the crab cakes and banana bread pudding were excellent. My boyfriend enjoyed his meal (mahi mahi). The waitress was polite but seemed more occupied with the neighboring large table. "The food and atmosphere were definitely enjoyable. However, our server did not seem to care whatsoever about our dining experience. The server immediately pointed out that the kitchen did not know how to execute a specific dish and how he would do it differently. Note to all servers... Chefs do dine out occasionally, and when they do... not a good idea to insult the kitchen. I would have much rather given the tip to our food runners and busser."

"Have been here several times for special occasions. We returned for restaurant week otherwise it is to expensive. The choices for restaurant week were outstanding. We have had outstanding wait staff in the past tonight was not the best. The parking ramp here has changed and is very confusing. We figured it out but this is a bit of a hassle. The complex is very quiet and I am wondering if they will look for a better location like Manny's has done. The MahiMahi was the best entree of the evening. The oysters and crabcakes are favorites did not dissappoint."

"The crabs cakes are the best I've ever had. The Alaskan King Crab Clusters are amazingly good. I've never been disappointed with Oceanaire. "mahi-mahi was MARVELOUS...trout my wife had only so so. crab cakes WONDERFUL...clam chowder so so (but i'm a clam chowder snob). Desserts both PHENOMENAL. Can you tell we were there for restaurant week? Had never been, took that opportunity to go. Will be back! v-e-r-y attentive service. Liked our "tucked away" location...out in the main dining area might have been a bit noisy."

I think of Oceanaire as only special occasion that I couldn't afford otherwise, but learned that it is on price with other nice restaurants for seafood and that they do a fixed price menu daily so I could easily go back often! The food was great--the crab cake is to die for. Hardly any filler, just big pieces of crab! We loved everything we got and left satisfied without being stuffed. The martini's are wonderful--try something new!
My only compliant is that the staff was a bit over-attentive if that is possible. Someone was there every thirty seconds with water until it was just ice from filling and filling and filling. And they took plates away so quickly that I almost felt rushed"

"Food tastes good, but some of the items could have been presented in a more grand fashion. For example, the crab cake was white in color, served on a white plate with a white sauce. Don't get me wrong, it was probably the best crab cake I've eaten, but it just wasn't all that beautiful. I was also surprised about the crowded feeling in the restaurant. The tables are almost on top of each other. Maybe if we had been tucked in a booth I would have found it more romantic. Overall though, the food was delicious and the service was very helpful and attentive."

"Oceanaire did not skimp for restaurant week 2010! Full size Maryland style crab cake to start, large portion of perfectly marinated/prepared Mahi Mahi and carrot cake for dessert. Apparently they have a "restaurant week" style menu avaialble all the time. We will definitely be back. I can't wait to try the Stone Crabs (still in season the next month or so)"

"After hearing so much about Oceanaire I was excitied to try it out.
I have to admit I was a bit underwhelmed.
First off I will say that the crabcake is excellent even if not quite enough for two to share as they claim.
A friend had a shimp cocktail which I thought looked like an excellent portion until I noticed that most of the cup was filled with ice and a piece of lettuce covering it.
He also had a main entree of scallops and while nicely prepared consisted of only 4 smallish scallops.
I had the ciopino which was fair, fish and shellfish were great but broth itself could have had a bit more complexity and flavor.
My wife had the fluke which was excellent but was the thickest fluke I have ever seen?
Won't be running back there."

"We arrived early on Saturday Feb 27, but this did not cause a problem. We were seated right away. Drinks were ordered and delivered very quickly. "Our server was sort of a seafood snob and didn't take to kindly to novices asking basic questions. Also, I don't think I'm alone when I would prefer to be notified if food is being served in an atypical way, such has a whole fish with head and fins and eyeballs being dropped in front of you. I know for people who are seafood regulars this is normal and perhaps preferred, but I felt that we strongly indicated our ingorance to the food that they specialize in and there was no empathy shown whatsoever. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a good place for the seafood coinsurer, however if you're out to try something new, this is not the place to try it. I had salmon which is not exactly uncommon and thought it was mediocre at best."

"Dinner was absolutely wonderful. I took my wife to The Oceanaire Minneapolis for Valentines day. The restaurant was festively decorated with red and white balloons on the ceiling for the occasion. We took one home for our daughter at the end of the night.

The food was exquisite. There were 12 different oysters to order (based on location, not species as far as I can tell). We aren't very knowledgeable when it comes to oysters, having eaten them only twice prior to this outing. Our server Matt was extremely knowledgeable and helped us order several varieties that were all wonderful.

Our meal: Oysters, Escargot, Crab & Lobster, Key Lime Pie.

I think I could eat there every day for the rest of my life. Thanks for a wonderful night!"

Waiter couldn't seemt to decide whether he was bugging us and should leave us alone, or stay unobtrusively on top of us. "This is one of those restaurants you can count on to always get a great meal, great wine & outstanding service. The clam chowder is a must have so be sure to get a cup. The salads are great too, if you have a vegan/vegetarian in your group. The only let down on this last trip would be the cookie dessert. If you get them without the ice cream, as my date did, they were your average chocolate chip cookies. Not the warm, gooey, fresh one he remembered from other trips. "Including tip, 3 of us spent $240 on a Thursday evening. Arriving at 7:45 were surprised that we needed to wait for our table to be set. The restaurant seemed a little understaffed. We started with freebies: wonderful crudites, quite good bread, a small wonderful appetizer. My martini was elegantly served and the best I have ever had. Lobster bisque was superb. The salads, however, were disappointing. Our entrees, although wonderful, were somewhat overcooked, perhaps too long on the warming table. Because we were celebrating a birthday, the staff brought us a first rate chocolate baked Alaska-a very nice touch. The waiter was first rate and the staff very friendly. A few things need some fine tuning."

"Dining room has great art deco decor. Service was exceptional - prompt and unobtrusive. The waiter was courteous and not overly familiar. We had the Winter Sale menu, a $30 prix fixe option that I think changes daily. The food was good, but didn't wow us. The shrimp was a little tough, the bread was bland. The clam chowder, however, was excellent. I expected better food considering the price and all the rewards and accolades the Oceanaire has received."

"One major problem I encountered. Our table was not ready at the reservation time, so they sent us to the bar. We got a drink and after less than 5 minutes, our table was ready. They asked us to close out the bill at the bar. I gave them my AMEX card and we were ushered to our table, but again, it was not ready. So, they ushered us back to the bar. Less than 5 minutes later our table was ready and we again were ushered to the table.
After dinner, I received the bill and proceeded to get my AMEX card out of my wallet to pay the bill. Much to my surprise in the shuttling back and forth to the bar, I never received my AMEX card back from the bartender. The manager said the bartender was now gone and I never got my card back. Not good!"

"My whole experience was pretty good at Oceanaire. A friend didn't have a good experience there because their table was right near the kitchen door and it was distracting, so I called ahead and requested a quiet/more private table. The person helping me on the phone was very nice and asked if it was a special occasion. I told him it was my boyfriend's birthday, so he reserved a nice private table for us and had "Happy Birthday (name)" printed on the menu. I thought it was adorable! Service was great. I recommend this to anyone!"

"The hostess was not very friendly. We had reservations and still had to wait 15 minutes past our assigned reservation time. We were seated next to the kitchen. It was very noisey--all we could hear were the plates and pans clanking in the kitchen. The ambience was not very good. The restaurant was very loud in general. This is NOT a place to go if you want to have a romantice or quiet dining experience. On the positive side, our waitress was very good and friendly. The seafood also was very good."

"Oceannaire has been a special occasion destination for my wife and me for many years. My wife's birthday this year was no exception. Overall, the highlight of the evening was the food. I chose scallops and my wife chose haddock. Both were done to perfection with a very attractive presentation. Our waiter was friendly and efficient, and he did a great job of pacing the meal. However, I need to add that we arrived about ten minutes prior to our reservation time and were told that because we arrived early we could wait at the bar until our table was ready.We found this to be very odd, particularly because there were a number of open tables, including the one we were eventually seated at. In addition, the bartender was not very friendly."

"When we first arrived minutes before our reservation we were told they were running 15 minutes behind, that was ok, so we went to the bar for a drink. We were ultimately seated 40 minutes late, and were a bit put off. They offered us a free appetizer, which helped make up for the wait. We ordered the crab cakes (which were to be free) and some oysters. The crab cakes were delicious and I highly recommend them and the oysters were good too. They ended up surprising us and giving us the oysters for free too. I'd say this made up for the wait. The dinner was outstanding and I can't say anything bad about it at all. Our waiter, Chad, was a great personality and it was a pleasure to have him wait on us, and helped make the night great."

"Three of us dined here the day after Christmas. We had a beautiful view of the snow falling outside big windows. The minute we sat down, we were each served a complimentary appetizer. "I am writing in regards to my experience on 12/31/2009. On New Year’s Eve I had reservations for two at 9:30pm under the name Sipprell. I was greeted by the host and was told that it would be about 10-15 minutes due to reservations backing up and how busy it was. I understood so I decided to have a drink at the bar while we waited. "This place is phenomenal. Every aspect of our meal was top-notch, as they usually are at the Oceanaire Seafood Restaurants. My biggest let-down has nothing to do with the Minneapolis location at all, it's that they closed the location in Seattle where I live. I long for the chopped salad, the crabcakes, and the service. Now I just have to go to the one in Minneapolis when I go back to visit family or to one of their many other locations. My dream come true would be having them open in Seattle again, but that's unlikely."

Too much anchovy in the ceaser salad dressing.....hubby liked the clam chowder. Both had the Mahi....big portion, cooked just right, while the salsa was good that came with it, it just seemed like something was missing, or that this spicy salsa just didn't match well with the Mahi. "It was my mothers birthday. They printed up special menus that wished her a happy birthday and had their special Baked Alaska for dinner. Our server (Zach) was very attentive and helpful. As long as you go in knowing that is a very expensive place, you are in for a wonderful time.
P.S-The escargot is some of the best I have every had."

"As always, the entrees (seafood) were heavenly, and like nothing I've had anywhere else. The crab cakes are the standard against which I judge the crab cakes at any other restaurant. I have never had beef or chicken at this restaurant because I love the seafood. The acorn squash side was nothing special. Because it was my birthday, a free dessert of Baked Alaska was provided. Had we not gotten that, I would have ordered the Key Lime Pie (my favorite). The only way it could be better is if they replaced the graham cracker crust with shortbread crust, but that's just my preference, as I know the graham cracker is traditional."
