Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The food was spectacular. The duck breast was sensational, best I've ever had! And my friend had the meatballs, which she said were outstanding. Parking in this area is difficult, but that's not the restaurant's problem. Waitstaff was keenly aware of diner's needs! Altogether wonderful and will def eat here again soon!"

Review 5 for Hearth

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We just had a delicious dinner at Hearth, despite the horrific rain storm. Staff was amazing and attentive (they graciously accommodated 50% of our party's last minute cancellation), we were even cheerfully greeted by the chef himself, and the food...just, wow. What a fresh and delightful selection of flavors. I hope they keep up the wonderful job they are doing."

Review 8 for Hearth

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Undecided would be the operative word. The ambiance was great, the music kept low enough to not intrude. The gnocchi were certainly the best I have had outside Italy, texture and potato flavor to the fore and not oversauced. The smoke trout was equally as good. The preparation and presentation of both the papardelle alla lepre and the pan-sauted cod were excellent, the choices of ingredients for what accompanied them not enhancing the main ingredient. This is my palate, maybe not the same for others. The suggest wine, a red Le Terrazze "Sassi Neri" was "stone" awful. Thin, acid and hot. My bad for not picking from the impressive Riesling list. I shall return because I sense potential and I liked the place."

Review 13 for Hearth

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Not perfect, but quite good. Scallops in pumpkin soup base was fantastic. The duck & pork that were part of the Winter Tasting Menu were good, too. White chocolate mousse with pinapple sorbet was to die for. If the meal had ended there it would have been perfect. But the final sweet course was not up to the rest of the meal."

Review 15 for Hearth

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"After long wanting to try Hearth, my husband and I went for dinner last Saturday night.
It was everything I hoped it would be and more. The chef greeted us at the front door,
and answered all my questions about his favorite dishes and what we should not miss.
The food was fresh and delightful. The menu exciting and every dish complex and satisfying. The wine was superb. We were so well guided and served that we felt as if we were in a five star restaurant, but happily downtown and in jeans! Hearth is a MUST for good food lovers and the prices were absolutely reasonable to boot. This will be one of our favorites for years to come. It is an honor and a pleasure to give this restaurant the praise it deserves.

Review 16 for Hearth

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We had a very, very nice dinner for two at Hearth, which has an excellent menu. The service was first rate...attentive but not overbearing. The wine list was diverse, if a little pricey. The food excellent. We spent about two and a half hours (mid-week) over wine, dinner, and conversation. We're looking forward to dining again at Hearth...soon. Enjoyed your wine bar too!"

Review 17 for Hearth

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The waiter was very pretentious. I could tell he thought we were a typical cheap valentines table. He continuously tried to persuade me to get the ONE vegetarian entree on the menu, even though I told him repeatedly I did not want it.
The wine list at the bar is confusing - and I was tricked into ordering $16 glasses of wine.

Review 20 for Hearth

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We went to Hearth for Valentine's Day. The front house staff was exceptional. I do have to say I was put off by our server, though I can't really say we had bad service. I just felt he was a bit of a "know it all" and not in a good way. It turned me off especially because I do have a good palate and know what I like, don't like, etc. We ate from the reg. menu - I have to say everything was quite good. I was a bit disappointed with my rabbit pappardelle -- needed more of a kick. My husband's meatballs, however were out of this world. Dessert was great! Additional staff - great.

All in all it was a nice dinner. I could go on about small things that our server felt he could not accommodate. Which is why the overall was just Good

Review 21 for Hearth

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Found Hearth to be abuzz on a Friday night at 6pm. We had a roundly enjoyable meal, with exceptional highlights. Canora's seasonally adept menu was much appreciated, as well as his Craft-y Italian inflections. Stand-outs included the grilled calamari, chicken dumpling and sorel soup, escolar, and hen of the woods mushrooms. Must admit that the format of the wine list is a bit affected, but if you can overlook the overly elaborated and pop-culture saturated descriptions of its libations, the offerings are well informed and appreciated."

"Many years in, and Hearth still never disappoints. The food remains thoughtfully prepared and interesting, and my sole reservation about bringing just about anyone here for any reason--a friend for a long talk, my husband for a romantic evening or my mother for a New York treat--is that it makes it rude for me to spend the evening reading the hilarious and absorbing wine list. Not to be missed for me on the current menu--rabbit pappardelle, braised veal breast, gnocchi, apple cider donuts, and many glasses of the samling..."

"A perfect experience from beginning to end. Pretty room, table for two against the wall(not on a long banquette), very pleasant, knowledgable waitress, and fabulous food. We both had the lamb loin which was tender and flavorful. My husband had quail for an appetizer which was presented with a poached quail egg as well. If you come here you must order the gnocchi as a side dish--absolutely ethereal! Can't wait to go back."

"I lived in Paris, France for two years and the food in their restaurants is excellent. Hearth's food matches any quality Parisian restaurant. The taste of the food was superb - now I know why they ranked this restaurant as one of NY's 10 best. I cannot put into words how well the food was prepared and tasted. It actually melted in my mouth.

An excellent dining choice and experience! I will recommend this place to everyone I know.

"Service was very friendly and attentive.
We were first seated next to the open kitchen. The chef was very loud and critical of his staff. We were given a different table as soon as we asked.
The 3 course pre fixe with wine pairings was delicious and (for Manhattan) reasonable.

Minor annoyance:
Of 3 in our party, only 1 was asked if she wanted her coat checked.

"This is a terrific restaurant! The welcoming and relaxed tone is set by chef/owner Marco Canora who makes you feel as if you're coming home. The various rooms are appealing, with a bar in the main room, and another at the edge of the kitchen, so diners can watch the chefs at work. Food is delicious, comfort food, including the best gnocchi .... the desserts divine, a rich custard, like creme brule, but no brule .... and a warm chocolate cake with caramel ice cream. A place you'll want to return to, and to introduce to friends."

"Hearth has got its mojo back! With Marco in the kitchen and Paul on the floor, there is revitalized energy front and back of house. Food was creative and delicious, though a bit too salty at times. Fantastic amabiance - neighborhoody feel with brick walls and hardwood floors, definitely worth going out of your way for. The place was packed when we left at 11:30 pm and still going strong."

"Amazing restaurant in the East Village. Relaxed and unassuming, yet still high dining. Both times I have been there we had premium service from attentive, nice, and knowledgeable servers. The duck breast was great, as was the Escolar. Great portion size, not huge, but definitely enough to leave you more than full. Wine list is phenomenal. Will return many many times."

Review 44 for Hearth

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I had a great dinner here recently with my girlfriend. We had some excellent wine (the list is huge) and split the scallops and the hen of the woods mushrooms. Excellent food, very delicious and nice small portions. The ambience is very nice - a quiet bar at the front, sort of soft lighting and romantic feeling. I didn't love the chairs - odd comment i know - but they didnt seem to fit in with the overall casual chic feel of the place. Service was outstanding and I would definitely go back."

Review 50 for Hearth

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"There is so much to like at Hearth: delicious and inventive food with a focus on the simple and local, lovingly prepared and presented, an extensive and entertainingly written wine list, and cheery and helpful service. The only drawback is the price: Hearth seems unaware we're in a recession and even New York's other top restaurants concede this with a greater variety of moderately priced entrees or fixed menus. $27 pasta and a few four-figure wines recall another era, excesses that seem inconsistent with Hearth's "cucina povera" ethos. If the prices were a tad lower, Hearth would complete the trio of food, service, and value needed to make it one of the city's best; & while fantastic, it's not so exceptional to make you forget the bill."

Review 51 for Hearth

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"When Hearth made the offer to donate 50% of its revenue from one night to Haiti, I took the opportunity to give it another try. I was not terribly impressed when I went a few years ago and had never returned until now.

I'm happy to say that my experience this time was much improved. My boyfriend an I had the winter salad and hamachi appetizers, and lamb four ways and wild boar ragu pappardelle for entrees. The salad was fresh and deceptively simple, the hamachi delicate and flavorful, some of the lamb preparations were better than others, and the pappardelle absolutely heavenly on a wintry night. Our server was also very helpful in choosing wine pairings for us. It was pricey but worth it, especially for a great cause!

Review 52 for Hearth

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Hearth is a highly touted restaurant so expectations were somewhat higher. We liked the quiet(to our request)table by the window, perfect for a rainy Sunday night, the dimly lit but contemporary design, the widely spaced tables, the very attentive but unintrusive service, the knowledgable wait staff. We really liked that Hearth offers an array of wines by the glass (maybe 25) in either tasting (3 oz) or full (6 oz) size with reasonable prices. We also liked that that they have a 3- course menu- maybe cucera povera in Italian? (humble food) with wine pairings ($35 + $15). The least impressive part of dinner was the food. The "humble food" selections were heavily salted. The lasagna ok but uninspired. Best:the chef's complimentary soup"

"Delicious food...warm, rustic, and welcoming ambiance...superb service, from the hostess to the bartender, the waitstaff to the table runners...Hearth was a wonderful dining experience all around. The wine list goes way beyond wines into exploring the intricacies of spirits and ciders and beers as well. Who knew tequila had terroir? Well, now I do. All of this is presented in a down-to-earth yet elegant manner. If you can, splurge for a wine pairing along with your meal."

"Service was good but not great, snubbed by one sommelier for not taking his recommendation a glass of white for the salad course after ordering a red bottle for the $78 tasting menu. All wine is super expensive and oddly categorized as well. The tasting menu was great, but sparse for such a price...If you want a great tasting menu for almost half go to Po in the West Village...much much better. Overall a fair experience but the prices stung for the service and atmosphere we received."

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"This place is wonderful. We loved our table - the dining room is very well spaced and we weren't sitting on top of other diners, which can be a luxury in this city. It was perfect for our date night because it felt very private, but I think it'd also be great for large groups because of the way the dining room is set up. The vibe from the moment we walked in the door to when we left was so welcoming, warm, and genuine. The service was basically flawless - everyone was great and knowledgeable.

And the food? Delicious. We'll be talking about this meal for a long time... and we'll definitely be back to try all the things we wanted but didn't have room for that night.

"On the 27th of December my wife and friends met at Hearth to have dinner. What prompted us to select Hearth was a past article I had read from the NY Times. The night exceeded all expectations!!
The food was outstanding along with attentive but not obtrusive service that made the experience all the better. An offer by Paul ( partner/ owner) to select our wine for the evening and then use a “blind” tasting format to stimulate discussion was wonderful. We sincerely appreciate his explanations. His selections enhanced the dining experience to that of a memorable one!!

"I expected so much more from this meal. I had the wild boar ragu. The dish was quite dry overall, the meat was dry, not very flavorful, and tough to chew. The handmade cocoa pasta was good, and complemented the flavors well, but I was, as I said, expecting to be wowed and I wasn't. My friend had fish that came in parchment. I tasted it, and again, it was rather ho-hum. Same with the scallop appetizer."

"Everything about Hearth is perfect, from its relaxed friendly atmosphere to its awe-inspiring food. The server took care to recommend a good wine, and even noticed when two guests at our table wished each other a happy birthday--their desserts were both etched in chocolate "Happy Birthday." While all the food is great--it varies by season--the gnocchi is particularly exceptional. It's a pleasure to dine in such a non-stuffy, lively atmosphere. We'll keep going back to Hearth."

"The food was excellent--we had escolar, duck, and lamb tenderloin. Started with the house charcuterie and winter salad. Interesting and thoughtful menu. Wine list extensive, obviously compiled by wine freaks, and expensive for the most part. Bar tab brought the bill up pretty high but what can one expect. The place was packed at 730--staff was nice and competent but a bit rattled, it seemed--like they were short on help. Lovely and warm modern space, a bit loud because crowded. This is the kind of place you would love if you're serious about good food--local, responsibly produced, seasonally driven. American and creative with mediterranean touches."

Their three-course offering (Cucina Povera) was an exceptional value both in taste and price, especially in such a nice and stylish restaurant, though the braised rabbit was a bit difficult to eat (though braised, the meat did not fall off the bone). Review 70 for Hearth

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Had the nantucket bay scallops for appetizer - very tasty with a nice contrast between savory and sweet. Especially liked the addition of pomegranate.

Main course was the chatham cod which was too salty for my taste.

Also tried a bit of the wild striped bass cacciucco. Sauce was not to my liking - reminded me of fermented soy bean paste used frequently in chinese and/or korean cooking. Rather overpowering and not what I would've chosen to accompany bass.

Review 73 for Hearth

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We recently were at Hearth to celebrate a birthday. Unfortunately, due to a large party seated next to our table, our server was in the weeds almost from the start -- she had no help subsequently our table service was poor. The friont end manager, who was all around, either didn't notice, didn't check or didn't care but should have. Food was very good, but the service- lack of - hurt the restaurant and our experience."

Review 75 for Hearth

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The appetizers and main course were excellent, but the dessert was disappointing. The service was distracted, perhaps because the place was so full, but if so they should hire more waiters. Most disappointing was the wine. They had six Chateauneuf du Papes, an appellation we like very much, but I didn't know any of the producers, so asked the waiter. He started asking what style of wine I liked, but in mid-sentence suddenly said one of the six was by far the best. So we ordered it and it was pretty disappointing. Much less interesting than the modest Cote du Rhone we'd had the week before someplace else, for much less money."

Review 78 for Hearth

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Jerry, our server was outstanding. In fact all of the staff at this East Village gem are at the top of their game. Hearth's wine selection is one of the finest in the Village; and their selection of Rieslings must be the most extensive in the City. Cocktails are ALWAYS strong. I have their fish regularly, which is always prepared and served with enough inventiveness to sustain eating as an adventure, but not so presented that its arrival is ostentatious. If you're ready for dessert go with one of their chocolate specialties, which their pastry chef does WELL - every time!! Avoid the cheese plate, because the cheeses are not served at room temp. and the selection is paltry. Yes Hearth may be 'too' expensive, but it's a wonderful spend."

Review 79 for Hearth

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Marco Canora is one of our favorite chefs. (We have his book and, although we visit NYC only one or twice a year, have eaten at Hearth several times.) The food was mostly quite good. The menu rules were a bit over restrictive. For example, I wanted most items on the cucina povera selection, but not the butterscotch pudding, but could not opt for another selection such as a side dish. Our waitress was busy and harried; we had to ask for wine more than once. Still, all in all, a good dining experience."

Review 81 for Hearth

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Lots of contradictions here. Firstly, the food is very good - decor is a bit like the local pizza shop and whilst this might be deliberate, I think does undermine, at least in impression, the quality of what is served on the plates. Wine list is excellent. Service was friendly and enthusiatic but food was too fast and wine too slow."

"I used to go to Hearth when it first opened and really enjoyed it. We decided to try it again and were greatly disappointed. It was not as good as we remembered and were really unhappy with our foood- we both ordered the chocolate pasta with boar ragu - the ragu was very good but the pasta was like stale chewing gum - it was not an al dente thing either. it was tough and not very good - homemade pasta should be delicate and meld well with the sauce - that was not the case."

"Hearth is charming with a menu that shows real care and nuance. We had a great meal, our server could not have been better or more accommodating and the space is very appealing. "Glad it came to mind. Hadn't been to Hearth in awhile and the food and service were better than ever, now that chef Canora is back in the kitchen on a permanent basis and not suffling between sites. Since there where 3 of us we sat at a table, but I can't wait to go back and sit at the counter in front of the kitchen."

"exceptional potential for quality food and superb dishes. However falls down on the quality of some ingredient (e.g. lamb meat) and wine (Chateunneuf du Pape 99, not worth a good Chianti). Appetizers (try the grilled quail) are optimal, first dishes very good (ribollita), main courses just good (rabbitt delicious)."
