"Found Hearth to be abuzz on a Friday night at 6pm. We had a roundly enjoyable meal, with exceptional highlights. Canora's seasonally adept menu was much appreciated, as well as his Craft-y Italian inflections. Stand-outs included the grilled calamari, chicken dumpling and sorel soup, escolar, and hen of the woods mushrooms. Must admit that the format of the wine list is a bit affected, but if you can overlook the overly elaborated and pop-culture saturated descriptions of its libations, the offerings are well informed and appreciated."

"Many years in, and Hearth still never disappoints. The food remains thoughtfully prepared and interesting, and my sole reservation about bringing just about anyone here for any reason--a friend for a long talk, my husband for a romantic evening or my mother for a New York treat--is that it makes it rude for me to spend the evening reading the hilarious and absorbing wine list. Not to be missed for me on the current menu--rabbit pappardelle, braised veal breast, gnocchi, apple cider donuts, and many glasses of the samling..."

"This is a terrific restaurant! The welcoming and relaxed tone is set by chef/owner Marco Canora who makes you feel as if you're coming home. The various rooms are appealing, with a bar in the main room, and another at the edge of the kitchen, so diners can watch the chefs at work. Food is delicious, comfort food, including the best gnocchi .... the desserts divine, a rich custard, like creme brule, but no brule .... and a warm chocolate cake with caramel ice cream. A place you'll want to return to, and to introduce to friends."

"Amazing restaurant in the East Village. Relaxed and unassuming, yet still high dining. Both times I have been there we had premium service from attentive, nice, and knowledgeable servers. The duck breast was great, as was the Escolar. Great portion size, not huge, but definitely enough to leave you more than full. Wine list is phenomenal. Will return many many times."

"There is so much to like at Hearth: delicious and inventive food with a focus on the simple and local, lovingly prepared and presented, an extensive and entertainingly written wine list, and cheery and helpful service. The only drawback is the price: Hearth seems unaware we're in a recession and even New York's other top restaurants concede this with a greater variety of moderately priced entrees or fixed menus. $27 pasta and a few four-figure wines recall another era, excesses that seem inconsistent with Hearth's "cucina povera" ethos. If the prices were a tad lower, Hearth would complete the trio of food, service, and value needed to make it one of the city's best; & while fantastic, it's not so exceptional to make you forget the bill."

"Delicious food...warm, rustic, and welcoming ambiance...superb service, from the hostess to the bartender, the waitstaff to the table runners...Hearth was a wonderful dining experience all around. The wine list goes way beyond wines into exploring the intricacies of spirits and ciders and beers as well. Who knew tequila had terroir? Well, now I do. All of this is presented in a down-to-earth yet elegant manner. If you can, splurge for a wine pairing along with your meal."

"Everything about Hearth is perfect, from its relaxed friendly atmosphere to its awe-inspiring food. The server took care to recommend a good wine, and even noticed when two guests at our table wished each other a happy birthday--their desserts were both etched in chocolate "Happy Birthday." While all the food is great--it varies by season--the gnocchi is particularly exceptional. It's a pleasure to dine in such a non-stuffy, lively atmosphere. We'll keep going back to Hearth."

"The food was excellent--we had escolar, duck, and lamb tenderloin. Started with the house charcuterie and winter salad. Interesting and thoughtful menu. Wine list extensive, obviously compiled by wine freaks, and expensive for the most part. Bar tab brought the bill up pretty high but what can one expect. The place was packed at 730--staff was nice and competent but a bit rattled, it seemed--like they were short on help. Lovely and warm modern space, a bit loud because crowded. This is the kind of place you would love if you're serious about good food--local, responsibly produced, seasonally driven. American and creative with mediterranean touches."

"Glad it came to mind. Hadn't been to Hearth in awhile and the food and service were better than ever, now that chef Canora is back in the kitchen on a permanent basis and not suffling between sites. Since there where 3 of us we sat at a table, but I can't wait to go back and sit at the counter in front of the kitchen."
