The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel Reviews List
The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel
For 100 years, the Algonquin has been greeting and lodging the country's most prominent writers and literary personalities, as well as the leading figures of the American stage. The hotel is best known, perhaps, for the members of the Round Table, a group of luminaries who had in common both the ability to fire blazing witticisms and to withstand being on the receiving end of them. The tone they set during their daily meetings set the literary style of the 1920s.
After World War I, Vanity Fair writers and Algonquin regulars Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley and Robert E. Sherwood began lunching at the Algonquin. Though society columns referred to them as the Algonquin Round Table, they called themselves the Vicious Circle. "By force of character," observed drama critic Brooks Atkinson, "they changed the nature of American comedy and established the tastes of a new period in the arts and theatre."
"This was a return trip. We honeymooned at the Algonquin 30 years ago. It still is a beautiful place with rich history. The food is very good, but the wait staff either have language issues, aren't interested or simply enjoy talking to each other. It was not the anniversary moment I had hoped for. Let's say they performed the duties of a waiter trying to get guests out the door to the theatre. It might help if they asked?"

Review 3 for The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel
"Finally had a chance to get to the newly renovated Round Table at the Algonquin. The food was quite good but our waiter was not really paying attention. I asked for Red Velvet Cake for dessert, got Chocolate Mousse Cake. We rarely complain about pricing when we realize that we are staying in a "high rent district" but $17.00 for a glass of not very good Chardonnay. The selections overall were a real disappointment."

Review 5 for The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel
"An amazing experience on all levels. Warm, welcoming staff, quiet, cozy seating in a historic venue and delicious food and drink. I was able to dine here with a friend because I had a travel zoo voucher and while there was a set format for what was covered, they made almost everything on the menu available and treated us like "regular" customers. Highly recommend for dinner. Get the Texas Millionaire cocktail! And yes you can say hello to Matilda the cat when you're there."

Review 7 for The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel
"The restaurant oozes charm of days of its literary past. This does not, however, mean that it is stuck in a time warp. The food, wine and service were all good without being exceptional, and the whole evening was spent in a pleasant atmosphere in which to enjoy the food and history associated with this restaurant in a perfectly relaxing manner."

Review 8 for The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel
"A most enjoyable, albeit quick, lunch as we were heading for a theatre matinee. You could almost feel what it must have been like when Benchley, Parker and the rest of the Algonquin Set were in full-flight. Good food, friendly staff and the cat perched on the reception desk."

Review 10 for The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel
"I do not understand how a nostalgic place like this in NYC which has a limited menu, could run out of 2 items at by 8PM. No complaints about the waiter, but after being told that the kitchen has run out of pork chops, the 2 of us ordered the RibEye steak. A few minutes the waiter returned and announced that the Ribeye is not available. Looking around the were exactly 9 people having dinner, how is this possible? This place with an incredible history, should look into how the restaurant should be run and not live off the past. To add to our evening, when I returned home I received an E-Mail from Open Table informing me that the restaurant cancelled my reservation. HMMMMMMMMMMMMM, What!"

Review 11 for The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel
"The wait staff were friendly and efficient, but the food was very bland and fish was overcooked. Prices are high which is to be expected since you are paying basically for the special ambience of the Algonquin lobby. Have a drink in the lobby, soak up the atmosphere, but dine elsewhere."

Review 12 for The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel
"I know many people who love it here -- which is the reason we tried it out. But our experience was definitely poor. We were at a table that was consistently overlooked by the often-indifferent wait staff and this really colored the entire experience. I also felt that it was audacious to charge drinks with an average price of $22. I have never seen a higher price anywhere else in Manhattan as yet."

Review 14 for The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel
"Sadly, way past its "Best Before" date. The room was beautiful, but food and service was shockingly poor. Advise anyone else to stay in the lounge and drink only."

Review 15 for The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel
"The Round Table is an iconic New York restaurant so it was a wonderful to walk in the steps of great writers and others. But one needs to keep in mind that it is a hotel restaurant and, therefore, pricey. We went to Brunch which was really delicious. The room is classic, upscale, old world , dignified. The staff were extremely attentive without being intrusive. Can't wait to go back."

Review 17 for The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel
"Steak (perfectly cooked) was deliciously season and perfect with the 2 eggs served with it. Nice drink list. Staff accommodating. Waiter offered to stuff blue cheese into olives because he thought they may have been out them for my martini. Old-fashioned, New York atmosphere and perfect place to spend a couple hours on a Sunday for afternoon brunch."

Review 18 for The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel
"Went for Saturday brunch on our wedding anniversary. Great environment, hotel has been restored while keeping its old world charm. A little overpriced but food and service was excellent. Our server Chuck made us feel like we were regulars and even brought us some homemade cheesecake for our celebration. Will definitely go back, and possibly make this an annual visit. Best Blood Mary I've ever had!"
