"A couple of friends and I had a great meal at The Waterworks Restaurant last Saturday. We spent the morning bike riding around the drive followed by lunch and cocktails. The food was well prepared and the service was excellent. In fact, we're taking my Dad there on Saturday May 25 to celebrate his 82 birthday. He is retired from the City of Philadelphia Water Department so I'm sure he'll get a kick out of being there."

"The ambience not at all what it looks like on the website. We went for Mothers Day just was not impressed with the feel of the space, no candles, no flowers and the lighting or lack of made it feel dreary. Sorry that's how it was. Food ok and waiter very professional."

"The setting is beautiful--seated on the patio w/a great view of the waterfall & boathouse row. We had a group of 9 for lunch to celebrate my daughter's graduation. The food was pretty mediocre. Ordered 2 seafood towers-they were fresh and chilled, but very skimpy for $43 ea. Delivered to our table sitting in puddles of water. Half the table ordered the lobster roll ($23 for OK lobster salad in a very small hot dog roll). The semifreddo/ice cream dessert was delicious, but also served half melted on the plate. The servers were not unpleasant, but hovered around the table, removing plates as soon as possible, definitely trying to get off as soon as possible. A beautiful spot, but unfortunately the experience/food doesn't match the view."

"What can you say about the Waterworks that hasn't already been said. We ate on the balcony overlooking the River. The food was every bit as good as the view. Despite this being graduation weekend with the place hopping, service was impeccable, the food served just right and all of the staff incredibly friendly. One word of caution, given the crowd inside the noise level was much louder"

"Usually when family all go out together someone is not satisfied, but going to Water Works there is not one thing to complain about except that maybe you should pick a day it isn't going to rain so that you can enjoy the marvelous view of the water and park. As soon as you walk in friendly service seats you, waiters/waitresses come right over to you, and best of all if you have any questions at all don't be shy! They got you. Everytime I go, the food seems to get even better, so definetely no complaints there. It is just overall a beautiful place to go if your planning something special or even if you were strolling in the park and really wanted some tasty food!"

"In a nutshell, we did not get our entrees until an hour after being seated, when the restaurant was not even that busy. On top of it all, the staff was overly attentive to a party that was going on, completely neglecting the dining experience of the rest of their customers.
Awful, awful, awful. We traveled all the way from California to try this restaurant. Food was nothing to write home about. DON'T BUY INTO THE HYPE. If you want the view, you can pack up your own sandwich and eat it by the water, much like the Parisians do at La Seine, but this restaurant was just so awful, service was terrible."

"Everything about the Water Works Restaurant is special-the food, service, beautiful views of the Schuykill River, and crew boat houses from the University of Pennsylvania. The tomato bisque soup served on a chilly May 7, warmed both body & soul. The grilled octopus is my husband's favorite. He orders an additional serving "to go", which he enjoys when we return home. Just outstanding, always. Thank you."

"Pay $10 to park your car at the restaurant. Service was sub-par. Servers walked by but had to flag them down to get assistance. There was no salt or pepper on the table. Menu was confusing, some entrees came with side dishes, others you had to select and pay for separately, like $8 for mashed potatoes. Soup tasted as if came out of can. Steak (ala carte at $35) was OK and cooked to order, but nothing special. Bernaise sauce on the side ($3) was thin and tasteless. Pork ($34) had a really delicious sauce though the meat itself a bit tough, but expected with a medium-well order. The best part of the meal was the fresh bread, however a bit cold by the time we managed to get some butter brought to the table. All in all, not worth it."

"I have been here 5 or 6 times and have never been disappointed. Their Octopus Salad is one of the best I've had (& I've had a few). The view is fabulous in the warmer months. Everyone I've brought here has loved it and would recommend it and return.

"I made reservations never hearing or seeing this place. My hopes were high but I expected a lot less. I took my date the and we were more than satisfied. The romantic scene is unlike any restaurant that I've been to. The food was superb. I had very little money yet we had a whole meal. The food prices are more than reasonable. The service was perfect. "Restaurants with a stunning view rarely offer food to match the view. This was the exception to the rule. The views of the river and the boathouses were remarkable, but the food did not play second fiddle: my fish entree was cooked to perfection and there was enough variety in the menu to please any palate. My fair city of Portland OR has no shortage of great places to eat, but even without the view of Mt. Hood, Water Works is right up there with the best Portland has to offer"

"Our evening was just outstanding. The beef carpaccio was excellent. The octopus appetizer was presented warm with a wonderful herbal, olive oil dressing that was unexpected and delicious. I ordered the blackened chicken and it was moist and yummy. I was motivated to order chicken because of the polenta and it did not disappoint. The desserts were wonderful and the 20 year tawney port a great way to wrap up a meal. My expectations for a Saturday night are usually low, but the service was great and the food excellent."

"Stepping outside, the view was exceptional. From inside, drapes obscured much of the view. It was a little chilly to sit outside, which would have afforded a better view. Three of us ordered the Greek salad, which advertised avocado. We could barely find a few little pieces of avocado. There was little Greek about the salad. Our other guest had the panini. I was afraid to ask her how it was. This is such an historic architectural and engineering treasure of Philadelphia. It's a shame that the food was so bad. It was embarrassing to bring our Australian cousins here."

"I frequent the Waterworks for the ambience, because they tend to be accommodating regarding the arrival time and sitting arrangements and the service is good;, the food is average as best and overpriced. The city have many very good restaurants and this one is not one of them."

"The setting is spectacular, a great reuse of a historic building. Service was good and no one in our group of six but me had anything negative to say one way or the other about the food. My wife's branzino was excellent; my pork tenderloin was tough and dry but pork can be that way these days. We would still go back."

"I am not a negative person and do not enjoy writing negative reviews so I generally just skip those opportunities. However, the Water Works is such a poor use of a lovely opportunity that I am making an exception. The service was weird, the first two wines I chose from their wine list were out of stock the waiter provided some pseudo explanation about the State Store system and their distributor. Then the Maitre'd came over with a pointless but length discussion of the same topic. I ordered the steak and specifically declined their offer of any sauce, I even made sure that they were not putting anything on the steak, but it came out tasting sweet. It was also only about 1/4" thick, full of fat and gristle."

"Having dined at many Philadelphia restaurants that received good reviews, we were unprepared for the wonderful time we had a the Water Works. Even at lunch, the service was beyond our expectations and the food was delicious. The menu was obviously prepared for lunch, versus being a water-downed (no pun intended) dinner menu. It ranged from appetizers, to salads, to burgers, etc. and each was a treat. Returning for dinner is on our wish list."

"The manager did not honor my request; even though I confirmed it. Given that my wife is 8 months pregnant and it was our anniversary, I requested a booth for her comfort and our privacy. I had requested this when I made the reservation through OpenTable and I later called to confirm and the manager assured me we would have a booth that faces the water.
When we arrived the hostess confirmed our reservation, looked sheepishly at the computer screen and then led us to a table on the patio, where the seats are not comfortable for a pregnant woman and it was slightly chilly outside. I didn’t say anything because I knew at that point that my request had been completely ignored and I didn’t want to interrupt our anniversary night."

"Anniversary/Birthday date with my wife, long awaited, she preferred after a recommendation from a friend. Place is absolutely beautiful, staff was very professional and attentive, good wine and "water" list, food was average at best. Not that it wasn't good but we had much better at less expensive restaurants. Everything was over cooked and over priced. I'm not sure if the beauty of the restaurant sets your expectations high or not but the food was a disappointment."

"We enjoyed the wonderful building and the very friendly staff. The service was excellent, and we had a good time chatting with the staff. The salads were acceptable, but not outstanding. The sauce and potatoes and beans were quite good, but the pork tenderloin, unfortunately, was not tender. The night we were there the weather was terrible, but I think that outdoor dining would be lovely."

"We had a very good time and our waiter was excellent. The disappointment was the meal and desert. Although we felt that each of our meals and deserts were good, nothing was to the level that we expected. Other than the sauces on the meats and deserts, the food was what we would have expected from a restaurant that charged half as much. Our waiter Tom was what made the evening."

"Attended Saturday evening for my boyfriend's birthday. Soon as we walked in the hostess wished my boyfriend a Happy Birthday and acknowledged my request via Open Table for a view on the water. Our waiter was attentive and the food was excellent. Definitely a nice option for a special occasion or nice evening out."

"This would be a great spot if the interior was more attractive. The tent on the terrace is bad, at best. It would probably be lovely on a summer's evening with no tent. The interior spaces are cold and uninteresting. Food was great and service was also good, but the atmosphere is not great. That's too bad because the site is fabulous."
