Ozumo, contemporary Japanese cuisine with Oakland's largest sushi bar, sake lounge and full bar with a nightly DJ. Ozumo serves classic Japanese cuisine along with it's own original creations. Ozumo has 3 private dining rooms and chef counter seating as well.
"I love Ozumo ever since it opened up, but the noise level has tripled since they removed a diving wall between two serving rooms. Now i have to yell to my waiter and vice versa."

"Have been to Ozumo before and enjoyed it very much. This time was no exception. The food is consistently good-innovative and delicious. The service is attentive and knowledgeable. My brother and family, from out of town, and my 102 year old mother all had a memorable time."

"Having eaten in the San Francisco location, I had high expectations. I was disappointed, the service was OK but there was nothing exceptional about this restaurant, Food was ok but again not great."

"There were five of us. WE ordered a small plate to share with cocktails, and for dinner ordered two salads and four main dishes: two ribs, one chicken and one sukiyaki. Our bill, divided by five, was not nearly as much as I thought it would be. High prices had been mentioned in every review I had read. The salads were good, not spectacular, but the ribs and chicken dishes were great. Sukiyaki was good. I definitely will return, though maybe not on a Friday night. It was quite noisy. The Monday sushi special is something to which I'm looking forward."

"I don't like how they took down the wall separating the two areas because now it is 3 times as loud. But the food still rocks, now it's just too noisy!"

"Everything is perfect but the noise. We could hardly hear each other at dinner. I have not found that at lunch. It may have been where we were sitting on an upper landing."

"Ozumo does not disappoint. Food and drinks are always fun and delicious. This is a hot spot for downtown Oakland, but us "older folks" can really enjoy it as well. Service is attentive and the staff remembers regulars. This has become a standard for us."

"First of all, the prices on wine are obscene. Second, while the presentation of the dishes is gorgeous, the flavors are too often bland. The tuna tartare was okay, although the wasabi was badly integrated. But the duck confit dumplings were a bore and the squid tough and uninteresting in flavor. The service was amateurish, our waiter dumping a beer from the tray, disappearing for far too long, but returning occasionally to drizzle his annoyingly obsequious palaver over us. I'm 70 years old and he kelp calling me "Miss". Yuck."

"First time there....(plenty of recommendations from friends and family). Hip place, nice interior style. Friendly staff. Good food. BFF & I stayed and at the bar because it felt right (although we had dinner reservations). Enjoyed the DJ spinning music. Will definitely bring back hubby...he will enjoy the rib appetizer & music for sure!"

"My father who "doesn't like japanese food" had a wonderful time here tonight. He said the steak he ate was "elegant" and when the busser took my plate and immediately wiped up my spilled drops of soy sauce, my mother said: "now this, is a restaurant." Needless to say, the sake went down easy, the food was delicious, and we had a great time. We will definitely be back."

"I have been to Ozumo for lundh a number of times and the food and service are always very good. It is a great place for a business lunch as it is not noisy and the tables are not too close together so a private conversation can be held."

"Had a great time, food was excellent, my guest was very pleased. However, we were very disappointed when we,re told to leave because of another reservation within the next ten minutes. This was immediately followed when we decided to pass on the dessert. We were on that table for about 1-1/2 hours and spend closed to $300. My guest (World famous artist) thought that was ruded and unprofessional when other table around us were empty.
This type of services will cause us to patronized the Ozumo-San Francisco instead."

"Server was friendly but inattentive - did not delete a charge he had promised to delete, did not inform us that one of the items we ordered was unavailable (until we asked, after 30 minutes, why it had not been served), no refills on water (without asking)."

Made my reservation on OpenTable for lunch with my wife on her birthday. We needed to eat a late lunch so we booked for 1:45. We arrived a few minutes early and the restaurant was mostly empty (though clearly would be energetic were it full). When we were sat we were told the kitchen was closing in 15 minutes and we needed to order everything we wanted right away. I was fairly annoyed, I booked a reservation, they confirmed it, nobody ever warned me that we'd be rushed out when we sat. Especially with sushi we like to order a course or two, see how we feel, and order a course or two more. We ordered what we felt we'd want and figured we'd just find another restaurant to finish our meal at if we left hungry."

"Lovely restaurant. We went for their Monday night sushi special $30 each. Fabulous deal due to the economy I'm sure! It was excellent; fresh crab, lovely pork belly. Only downside was we sat at sushi bar and manager told our waitress to tell us to leave as we had overstayed the 1 hour limiit. Didn't know there was one; turns out it is fine print on the menu at the sushi bar. Waitress apologized and was lovely. I can see if they were totally full and people waiting but when we left the robata bar had noone sitting at it (15 seats at least) and sushi bar (where we were seated at least 24 seats) had about 9 or 10 seats open.
I think that was not necessary and was a turn-off but the price and quality will bring us back."

"We had a lovely and delish celebration dinner with two of our grown children during restaurant week. My husband, son and daughter totally enjoyed the prix fixe menu. I eat gluten free so ordered off the regular dinner menu. The Ozuma staff is extremely accommodating to those who eat gluten free. I really appreciate it. Thanks so much!"

"Sushi was good but overpriced. Tried a couple of the other menu items and they were just ok. Think they try to do much fusion, should just stick to sushi. Good for a special occasion when you want to splurge on specialty rolls. Too many servers."

"We went to Ozumo as part of Oakland's Dine About Town. For most of our group the set menu was just fine. But, one of our group is a vegetarian, and much to our surprise, there wasn't a vegetarian option available. However, the manager Vincent was just terrific in providing an entree for her - even though the Dine About Town menu does specify "no substitutions." We really want to thank him for his flexibility. The food, too, was outstanding - fabulous - and different flavors - with everything we ordered. And, the portions were very generous. I'm a good eater, but I ended up giving quite a bit of my meal to my husband!"

"Went for Restaurant Week. Very nice, minimalist decor. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. The squash soup was uninspired though the salad was tasty. The sashimi and sushi were superb, beautifully presented, with less rice and more flavor than elsewhere. The chicken was dry on the outside and flavorless (?not brined?) but the accomapanying vegies and reduction sauce made up for it. The Nieman Ranch short ribs, surprisingly, lacked flavor too but, once again, the vegies and reduction sauce were great. The pumpkin apple dessert was superb. Although we felt a bit rushed as plates were removed while we were still eating, we were impressed with the service and the staff's knowledge of everything from the ingredients to the sakes."

"Drinks were good. Food was very average and under-seasoned. Dessert was not good. Considering plum and flora are right down the street, I can't say I would come back if I was in the area."
