"Finally, the Valley gets a restaurant worthy of West LA! The food was great, modern and very tasty. Nice ambiance, fairly quite (we went on a Friday night, so no evidence of really loud music as prior reviews suggested). Highly recommend."

"Food was surprisingly very good to excellent. hOWEVER, EVENING WAS impacted negatively because of offensively loud, cacophinic alleged "blues" music. Although the restaurant was relatively empty, and we asked to have the music changed or lowered, it was not. We will think seriously about returning."

"Very good but not special. Small plates/small portions makes dinner extraordinarily expensive. Two of us had 4 glasses of okay wine, and 5 plates (we were still hungry) and the bill with tip was $200. Not great value. Definitely would have preferred to have spent the money at Craft--which was worth every cent the last time I dined there."

"It is such an attractive restaurant but doesn't stop there - the food is so delicious and the service is gracious and accommodating. It's not even that noisy. There's also a good deal of street parking which makes parking pretty easy. but if valet parking is desirable or necessary, it is modestly priced."

"I really liked Marche. We were there on valentine's Day for the first time, so it was a bit hard to judge what it wold be like normally, since it was quite busy and the menu was prix fixe. The waitress was lovely. Unfortunately, there was some problem with the second course and it took a full half hour to get our ravioli. The waitress did come by to say something about it, but it was another ten minutes before the food appeared. Oddly, the people next to us, who ordered maybe 40 minutes after us, go theirs two minutes later.I don't know whether they ran out unexpectedly or he kitchen just got backed up. Otherwise, it was a very nice experience and we would go back."

"All three visits to Marche were a disappointment. The food was absolutely delicious--but the service was very poor. We had to ask for water and bread three times before it arrived. Also, there was a long wait for first course as well as between courses. It was especially curious because there were many busboys, 2 wine experts and waiters walking back and forth but we had a hard time getting anyone to come to our table. Also, there were no apologies. It was unfortunate because the food is so good. We hope they work out their kinks becasue I would love to go back."

"On an impulse we made a reservation for 9pm on a Saturday. We were greeted warmly by the staff and seated immediately. Our waiter was friendly, professional and extremely knowledgeable about the food. Both breads, a potato roll and a 15 year old starter sourdough, were homemade. Even better- so is the butter! The room is warm and relaxed. The music was a mix of old blues and standards. Great wine list. Local produce and a menu that reflects the chef's creativity, skills and love of food. With our server's knowing suggestions, we tried many dishes from the menu. We were impressed with everything. Marche is serious about the food and service while at the same time maintaining a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. A local gem!"

"It was quiet when i got there at 6:30, but the tables soon filled--unexpectedly. There was one waiter and several runners. Since I was there 'first' I received excellent service. I could see others were annoyed for not receiving prompt service. Open table shows this as a $$ restaurant, but it should be $$$ or $$$$. What I didn't know going in is that the portions are very small and you need to order like a tasting menu. 5 items at an avg of $10 adds up! I enjoyed everything: almonds, pork candy (sweet & spicy bacon pieces), spinach/poached egg salad, mushrooms with fettucine, and chocolate pistachio cobbler (brownie w/ scoop of icecream). My favorite dish was the spinach however I would have preferred it to be warmer. Egg was cold :("

"Delicious Menu with wonderful surprises throughout. Timely, unrushed service with knowledgeable staff. We happily busted there "nothing over $17" menu with their AMAZING black truffle dish. Forty shaves for $40 bucks and worth every bite. Enjoy."

"It is a bit difficult to order at Fraiche because of the way the menu is arranged and the waiter insisted we needed to order all our choices at once. It is hard to know how much you want to order since the portions, we were told, are about 3 oz each. Our waiter repeated several times that we should order 3 items each. That was not what we wanted to do at the moment and found that wasn't necessary. I felt pushed by his manner. Not pleasant for an evening out. This was our second time there and the first time was a better overall experience because of the waitstaff."

"This restaurant is perfect for a special occasion. The atmosphere is romantic and intimate. The service is superb and the cuisine delicious! What is unique about Marche is that the platters are appetizer portions to whet the appetite & try a variety of the menu. What I still dream about is the Tahitian Squash, it was one of the best morsels I've ever tasted. It is quite pricey given that you need to order 3 plates to get full and at $17 a pop that adds up quickly. If I were rich, I would dine here more often but unfortunately my pocketbook won't allow me the pleasure that my taste buds desire."

"I was pleasantly surprised. I had not eaten here since it changed hands. I noticed the 1000 point reservation and thought why not? The plates are smallish - not like tapas. But they are filling. You can get a few and split them. The menu changes weekly which is nice. They go with local and in season. I had the crab which was very good. The desserts were also very good. I will definitely be back and I want to try their $30 sunday dinner."

"Dined here for the first time on Valentine's Day and had the tasting menu. All the dishes were great! The Fois Gras Terrine was so delicious! They gave us homemade Valentine's cookies when we left! Service was great and the staff was very friendly. We will definitely return."

"I love this restaurant! The staff is attentive, the food is amazing and the setting is perfect. Marche manages a bistro feel that didn't require us to knock elbows with the diners at the next table. And we love the serving sizes - perfect for trying lots of dishes."

"We live in Los Feliz and never eat in the valley. But we were meeting friends who live in Calabassas and wanted to find a restaurant about half way between us. We were running late, and when we got there, the hostess greeted us with a huge gracious smile, and told us not to worry. Our friends were happily seated at the table having a cocktail. This set the relaxed tone for the evening. Both the food & wine were amazing. As we ate dinner, the most delicious smelling coffee kept passing by our table, so we ordered some with our dessert. Marche features fresh local ingredients, Healthy Family Farm chickens, grass fed meats, table brewed coffee, a knowledgeable sommelier, great wait staff... it was a wonderful, delicious night!"

"Trying to be Gordon Ramsey style but does not deliver the ambiance and quality of food for the price. Not good value for your money... I miss the old Max's restaurant, which is really more about the food and the community. Marche definitely is more about the business... Typical LA quasi-HIP restaurant which will be forgotten in a few years.

The space is ackward, there's really no good table. Again the price does not match what is delivered."

"A great experience with food and wine. Bubbly and knowledgeable food staff and wine steward. When it was Max, the service was a bit toward being tight, proper and a touch snooty. As Marché, however, the service was more...social, and that is a good change.

Footnote: (1) a medium temp steak seemed more like medium-rare (or even light-rare), which made the steak a bit chewy and very pink throughout underneath the paper-thin layer of grilled exterior. (2) The pork belly was excellent and best shared as it was quite a heavy/fatty fare.

"Marche' was a delightful experience. The food, for the most part, is very different and extremely delicious. We tried a couple of things we had not had before.

The wine list is interesting, all European I believe. Since I had a cocktail first I asked our waiter to bring me a glass of Cabernet. He did so and it was so delicious, and as we were there for some time, I had another. I was quite shocked when I got the bill and discovered that the Cab was $15 a glass. Since the food is rather moderately priced, for what it is, I was quite surprised at the cost of the wine. They might want to look into a few slightly less expensive glasses. The service is superb and the ambiance is very nice. I look forward to going again."

"I came in for their new Sunday Supper menu and was blown away. $30 for 4 courses and very tasty quartinos of wine for just $5. The live music was fun and not too loud and the service was great. I felt like I was genuinely being taken care of in every aspect. Most of all I couldn't believe the value and quality of the food I received for such a stellar price. I will absolutely be back to enjoy more Sunday dinners and can't wait to get in there another night of the week to experience the full menu!"

"The food is excellent and the service is friendly. The restaurant is more expensive then the menu prices would lead you to believe because it is all small plate servings. We ordered one appetizer and four plates plus a desert and we were both still hungry in the end. Our waitress suggested that we should have at least 6 plates when we placed our order; we should have listened to her. I would not recommend the pitithivier desert if it's on the menu. Though well made, it is a strange mixture of sweet and savory flavors. The serving of ice cream accompanying it, excellent as it was, is skimpy. In the end the restaurant is more in the price category of Campanile then a humble bistro. Which is fine if you understand that from the get go."

"Marche is a French "tapas" type place where you order 4-5 smaller dishes per person. My wife and I had a total of 10 dishes between us which left us nicely fed with wine for $200 out the door. The food is very good. I particularly enjoyed the potted shrimp and mushroom-with-poached-egg dish. The skirt steak fillet mignon was certainly the letdown of the evening... it wasn't bad, but frankly there's only so much kitchen-trickery that you can do to a cheap skirt steak to make it fillet mignon-esque. On the other hand, there is no amount of explaining the waiter can do to properly convey the awesomeness of the mushroom dish. This dish alone is worth coming back for again.

One final note: the restaurant is in the old Max location."

"The switch from Max to Marche is welcome and well done.
The new decor accentuates the new dining concept and only heightens the experience of new
plates created to raise our expectations.
Our expectations were exceeded in all areas.
We especially enjoyed the different desserts by the on premises pastry chef.
We'll be back for so many wines by the glass--very extensive glasses only list.
Prices were fair--no gouging."

"We were seated on a long wall banquet (2 of us) and had very large parties on either side of us. The rest of the restaurant was fairly empty ( it was early). The 2 parties of either side of us were energetic and noisy...then the music started! Food was delicious but the conversations of 2 large parties and rather loud music caused us to leave. When I went to get my car I could not find the valet...the host just let me stand there even though I asked for his help; When I finally got my car ( a good 15 minutes) he gave me the wrong key pad...so another time elapsed until I could get him back ( on a very rainy night) so he could give me the right key! Turned out to be a less than great experience!"

"Our evening was perfect except that we were overcharged approximately $50.00 on our bill. The wine we ordered, which was delicious, was priced much higher on the bill than the menu. The wine stewart corrected the bill and apologized, but it was unsettling to think that if we weren't paying attention we would have been overcharged by so much. Food, service, wine and ambiance were wonderful, but the large overcharge was a disappointment."

"We had a fantastique experience at Marche. We chose several different dishes and shared amongst the four of us. Considering there were not many wines we recognized, but are willing to learn-our sommelier was patient and very knowledgeable. Our waiter was very friendly, explanatory and very accomodating. He is a fine artist, also! Our meal was fresh, delicious, though small portions-extremely satisfying.
The best part? They took a 10 p.m. reservation, everyone was extremely energetic and friendly, and did not clear off our table for us to be in a hurry to leave.

For a moment I felt I was in Europe..."

"I brought my husband here for his birthday. The food was incredible. They don't claim to be Tapas but bottom line, it is. Yes the portions are small but they explain this and how many items most people do order. We ordered 2 appetizers and 2 main entrees each plus a dessert and we were both very satisfied. The service was great and attentive. I love that the menu changes frequently based on what's in season. They also order their food from local vendors which I love. My only complaint was the noise level but it is a small space so I don't know if that can be avoided. We found a great gem and plan on visiting again soon."

"Kudos Marche, for presenting one of the most unique and memorable New Years Eve in Los Angeles...what a breath of fresh air! The food was the perfect amount of fresh and savory seasonal ingredients all presented with such purpose and integrity. The portions were perfect for the "personal tasting menu" concept. The entire staff was professional, friendly and engaging. We came for the second seating and stayed until the new year, celebrating with the live jazz duet, other guest, and staff. The ambiance was perfect; inviting, personal, festive and creative. We were so excited to learn that we could come any night of the week and have our own personal tasting menu, not just on New Year's. Will definitely be back!"

"some dishes outstanding, some mediocre. we were talked into overordering by a condescending waiter who told us the portions were small and recommended 4-5 dishes per person. absurd, as portions were fairly normal sized. the bread was great, freshly baked and different varieties. the setting was comfortable and not too loud. the restaurant was 'out of decaf'. had been since new year's, 2 days earlier. absolutely ruined the meal, not being able to have coffee, so we left and had dessert and coffee elsewhere. handled incredibly badly by the waitstaff, who left management out of the loop re our unhappiness."

"We visited Marche the first time on New Year's eve after reading the very positive review in the LA Times. We were greeted by the very friendly host and hostess and given a choice of two tables. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly. No snooty French restaurant atmosphere here!

Since it was New Year's eve there was a price fixe menu with 5 courses. One was better than the next. This was the best meal I've ever had in the valley and perhaps our favorite meal of the year. The wine list is small, but expertly chosen with fairly priced French wines."

"The 5 course dinner on New Year's Eve was wonderful. The flavors of every dish were well considered, balanced and vibrant. The portions of each plate were restrained leaving me extremely satisfied and not overly full. As the meal progressed the tastes mingled and grew, never skipping a beat. The mussels I had were perfectly seared/sauteed and grains were creatively used like the farro in a fennel, apple, orange salad. The desserts may have been the highlight though with a very light bandy infused cheesecake, brown sugar ice cream over warm apple, and a ginger nut bread pudding.... thumbs up!"

Our gracious server gave us great advice to try a minimum of three different items from the ‘Les Plat’s’ section of the menu, and two from the "petit assiettes'. This was a good idea b/c unlike other places, Marche goes far beyond a single entrée . The content of the meal is in the flavor, not in the quantity. Veal tongue pastrami& their sparkling Vouvray by the glass: delicious, well matched, and both did their job well, in making us hungry for more.

Vegetable courses came next, and were as varied, thoughtful, and filling as the Kobe beef, and John Dory entrees that followed. A bright, pretty, and soulful Burgundy was an amazing pairing to all of them. We left full, warm, and smi"

"Interesting ingredients, excellent flavor combinations. portions were small (3 oz.); I think 4 oz.'s would be perfect. the paquette pork, john dory, the arugula, tangerine, pistachio salad and squash, brussels sprouts, pearl onion veggie dish were all excellent. prices are reasonable. Wine list was a bit of a mystery. we were a wine knowledgeable party of 3, but were unfamiliar with any of the wines listed. that said, the wine steward was very helpful and her choice was very good. there is an outdoor patio which I'm sure will be lovely once the weather is warmer. we will definitely return."

"The food was good and presented nicely,but the small-plate portions were very uneven. For example, the chicken was a good-sized piece of white meat, while the sea bass portion had no more than two bites. The service was lacking. It was 35 minutes before we placed our full order (we had some almonds and olives when we first sat down). We brought two bottles of wine & were asked if we would like both opened immediately; we said yes, but had to ask again after 15 minutes had elapsed with no one to open our champagne or our pinot to breathe. The music was too loud for the small space so people talked louder to be heard above it. A jazz station was on & the DJ was talking for many minutes, which was very unpleasant."

I usually dine out in West Hollywood, Bev Hills, Santa Monica etc. when I want to go out since Valley food has typically been no better than something to eat when you don't care to cook rather than something to look forwad to. "how does marche get my overall "poor" rating when it gets pretty good stars in the other areas? very simply (and i'm quite certain i won't be the only one with this gripe): the portion size!!! yes, they make a great effort to explain at the onset that this is a tasting menu. but, my goodness, i don't think i've EVER seen such teensy plates. what seemed at first look to be decent prices ended up being quite expensive, and we STILL ended up underfed and unsatisfied. so DO beware!!"

"$125 and I'm still hungry. Food (what there was of it) was quite good, but portions (all of them) were Lilliputian, no bigger than a single piece of sushi (not even a full order). It was startling as dish after dish came to the table, each consisting of less volume than a shot glass. It makes a single tapa look like a full mean. You have to wonder, What are they thinking? Oh - and prices were not cheap. $33 for about 1 ounce of big eye tuna. We'd go back but then would have to go to Menchies next door fof 16 ounces of yogurt to feel satisfied. Instead, I'll save my $125 tab at Marché and go someplace else where diners are respected."

"The food was very good. The server presented it as a sharing of plates kind of place, but it was not served in that way. The servers and host seemed out of sync. The wine service was awkward. The steward had decanted a barolo that they served by the glass which was nice but ran out when pouring our three glasses and one of my party got a short pour. She did not return to fill his glass and did only when he pointed it out. Again food was good, but you should wait a couple of months until they work out the kinks in the service."

"This restaurant is very expensive and is deceiving with its small bites. Too feel full you would need to eat at least 5 dishes and when you are done it would be around $60 a person. While the food is good their small plates are tiny and the prices are too high for the amount on the plate. They need 3$$$signs and men would starve here.I eat at small plate restaurants often and I found Marche to be insulting for the price. Sorry but I feel ripped off and would never recommend them. Everyone at the table went home hungry and felt the same way. The special was a steak for $60, it was 4 slices of meat and 4 small potatoes. Seriously it was worth half that and though good a major rip off."

"All courses come in small sizes so prepare to order 1 appetizer and 2 entrees if you want to fill up. Everything was delicious and interesting; their wine list is not extensive but has everything you will need and humorous descriptions of the wines (only restaurant I know of that has Marc Hebrart on the Champagne list!)."

"I was very impressed in every way with the restaurant. The food was great; and I am not typically a gourmet restaurant goer. The atmosphere and all the staff were warm and friendly. Although I went with a buddy, this would be a great date place. I will definitely be back; and I highly recommend it."

"The kitchen was having major issues. It took close to an hour to get our first course of olives. I think the concept is flawed, and they might be better off with a traditional tasting menu. The pork dish was divine though. I might give them another chance in a few months."

"I couldn't believe the service that we recieved. We were celebrating a Birthday, it was already noted in our opentable reservations that we needed special accomidations since we were there for a reason. I chose Marche simply the fact my husband and I have been to the restuarnt when it was previously MAX. My honest opinion I think they should have left it that way with the old management and staff. Our server paid more attention to the couple next to us, and had us waiting 3-45 min for our starter. Then I asked for my filet mignon by the time I recieved my entree it was warm and over done. I asked for medium well and it was well done and dry. I complained to the manager and all he asked was I still hungry, He did not take it back nor off the"
