Annie Gunn's
Since 1937, once nestled in the middle of cornfields stands the Smokehouse Market. An unpretentious structure, reminiscent of its days as the market for the surrounding Chesterfield area. The store now houses one of St. Louis's most celebrated restaurants, Annie Gunn's. Within its walls, Chef Lou Rook, III works his magic, creating irresistible cuisine with a sophisticated country life accent. In keeping with the concept of "Foods and wines inspired by the richness of country life", Chef Rook uses the best ingredients and the traditions that are most appropriate to them and imbues them with his own talented creative spin within the rhythm of the seasons. "My husband and I went to dinner at Annie Gunn's for my birthday and had a wonderful time. They were very accommodating with our reservation, the food was superb, and our server was very friendly and patient with my husband who is a very "no-fuss" diner when it comes to food. The only improvement on our experience would have been where we were seated. We requested a booth and were seated in the bar. It was not exactly the quiet and romantic seating arrangement we were hoping for, but we still had a great time."

"This is not only the best restaurant in St. Louis, but this is the best restaurant I have eaten at in the world! This is no exaggeration. The quality and freshness of their food, which comes from sourcing much of their ingredients locally, is amazing. I have never had a bad meal in the 15+ years I have been eating there. The food and service is remarkably consistent."

"This was our very first visit to Annie Gunn's...and WOW from the moment we walked in till we left. The staff was so friendly and nice. Our server was amazing from start to finish with explaining everything from specials to any questions we had. The server overheard me say Happy Birthday to my significant other and she popped up and said " O, I am so sorry I did not know it was your birthday, I greatly apologize. Let me get you our apple pie and cinnamon ice cream to go". Just was a wonderful and delightful experience. Could not have asked for a better experience!!

"Annie Gunns large portions and flavorful dishes ensure that everyone leaves satisfied... That is unless you prefer a vegetarian fare. This is definitely a meat lovers paradise. The restaurant will make an off menu veggie option, but you need to be specific about what vegetables interest you. We all enjoyed our meals and the private room was wonderful."

"We finally tried Annie Gunn's! It was fantastic! The food was delicious from appetizers to dessert. We had the bacon smoked shrimp and creole crab cakes, goat cheese and pecan salad, tomato mozzarella salad, 6 oz filet and Cobia special and for dessert the Guinness chocolate cake..(I know we kind of over did it). Every course was wonderful and perfectly cooked. Try the polenta appetizer! It was a side on the cobia special and was so yummy! The service at Annie Gunn's was wonderful as well. We saw all walks of people in there as well. Finely dressed to casual as well as families with small children."

"Quite a disappointment. Dinner was OK, service was uninspired and bill was "over the top". Have been to Annie Gunn's many times over many years and have never been as disappointed as we were the other night. Scallops were "meh", hallibut was downright boring with absolutely no sauce whatsoever. Really?? Steamed whitefish without any sauce? Amazingly boring for $40.00."

"We had dinner at Annie Gunn's for our 31st anniversary. We were treated wonderfully, greeted with a sparkling drink and anniversary dessert. Our waitress was very fun and offered great suggestions that we enjoyed. She and the staff made us feel special. My husband's steak was excellent; he rarely orders steak at resaurants as he would rather grill his own. He was very happy with his choice. I had the sword fish special which was wonderful and had lots of flavor. We will be back. Thanks."

"Food was good, but overpriced. When asked server what beers were on tap she opened my menu and pointed to the list. It seemed like I was bothering her, an insult, and it is the second time it's happened. The lighting is so dim it's difficult to read. I don't know if I'll return."

"I have only lived in the greater St. Louis area for 1 1/2 years. It was my first trip to Annie Gunn's and wow it was awesome! I travel all over the country and I would rank Annie Gunn's as a top 3 in my books. Not only was the food in a league of it's own so was the service. Well done Annie Gunn's I will be back."

"The two times that I went to Annie Gunn's for dinner it was so noisy. Both times it was either around a holiday or on a holiday, so that was a factor in the exuberance of the diners. However, I do think the accoustics of the restaurant do not moderate the noise level. This time, the table where we were seated must have been under a vent because it was like a cold draft was directed on our table. The management did adjust the heat, temporarily, but it became cold again because the auto fan was turned on again. I give credit to the management for trying to make us happy with the temperature, but it was not an issue of overall heating or cooling, there was either a vent pointed at us or there was a cold draft"

"We started with the Ozark mushroom polenta with butternut squash and it was amazing. Very rich and very filling. We shared it and still took half home. Our steaks were done perfectly and their hand cut fries were delicious. Apple pie dessert with cinnamon ice cream also very delicious - best piecrust ever. Great wine list by the glass.
The best part of our visit was our server Kelley. She was pleasant, accommodating, answered every question very knowledgably (and we asked many), got ingredient lists for us, yet was not overbearing. It felt like we knew her forever! Wonderful wonderful service!! We'd go back just for Kelley!"
