"Very welcoming in the best way. A brilliantly knowable server. The crab cakes were out of this world, light and all crab. Best mahi and scallops, so tender, but the spinach sent me over the moon. I could have eaten that for.breakfast, lunch and dinner and still wanting more. Every detail of our meal was orchestrated with care and precision. What I just realized I enjoyed most was how understTed everything was which brought lut the best in each bit.If I am e er back in Charleston I will be back."

"This was my second visit to Poogan's Porch and my initial visit was obviously a fluke. The waiter refilled my water once and never refilled my glass of tea. He wasn't very attentive, a member of my party sent back a dish that was full of pork (who knew sweet potato hash had pork in it - we asked for ingredients) and wasn't offered another. My food was cold and I mentioned this, still no apology or offer to send it back. On his final visit back he dropped of the check and didn't even ring it out.

I won't be coming back to this restaurant again, but obviously my expectations were too high!"

"Yes, eat here. Had dinner on the back porch (a good place from which to watch the wedding behind the Gibbes Art Museum next door). Everything lovely. My husband had the best (Southern-prepared) porkchop he'd ever tasted, and I had a tower of good layers - starting on the bottom with creamy grits, then BBQ pulled pork, then sauteed spinach, then a large piece of red snapper with crispy skin angled over the top. It was fun, delicious, and well prepared. We also tried our first fried green tomatoes there, delicious."

"I absolutley loved Poogan's Porch. Luckily we made reservations, and we started out getting some cocktails at the bar, I tried the Fig Cosmo, it was very tasty and a glass of white wine with dinner. It was good! We had a cute little table in what seemed the living room of an old house-turned restaurant. It was adorable. The crab cakes were fantastic, some of the best i've ever had, and both our dinner's were delicous. I had the plantaion chicken, fried chicken with collards, gouda cheese, and something else stuffed inside. My boyfriend had the pork chop and with brussel sprouts which I loved, very tasty. We coudn't even finish both our plates. Can't wait to go back! thank you!"

"Every time we dine here we have a good experience. The food we ordered at this visit was very good. Though, I will have to say that I won't order the calabash flounder again. It was too "bready" for me. I thought it would have a light coating of flour but instead it came out very crispy and coating overpowered the flounder, which was actually very good once I got through all the breading!"

"We had great food & great service. The portions were generous; in fact, we had the leftovers for breakfast the next day at our hotel because we didn't want to waste the wonderful food. I last visited Charleston in the mid '80s and at that time we ate at Poogan's. I remembered it as wonderful and recommended it to my friends for this trip. It was just as good as I remembered it. "As several of us prepared for a bachelor party, a lot of research went into where we wanted to bring the groom-to-be. I am so glad we settled on Poogan's Porch. Since most of us were from out of town, we relied on Yelp reviews and other critical acclaim to find this gem of a restaurant. I would highly recommend the scallops for an appetizer and the plantation chicken for dinner. Both dishes are absolutely amazing! Everyone had an amazing time and a simply wonderful dinner!"

"Set in downtown Charleston, Poogan's Porch has a historic feel and ambience, due mainly to the building/house it is located in. The Arugala salad starter was fresh and bright, with a goat cheese crostini on the side. For mains, my partner and I both ordered the shrimp & grits. The flavors popped in the sauce, the shrimp were plump and fresh, and the grits the right level of creaminess. In all, Poogan's Porch is a must-try for anyone stopping through Charleston. Note: parking is a bit hard to come by downtown, but there is a pay parking garage just across the street that makes it his restaurant very accessible."

"We had dined at PP several times, but this time was a very special occasion but the meal was not. The noise level was way too loud the wait was long and we had reservations and the food was subpar. On previous trips you were given generous portions this time the wedge salad was no bigger than three bites. The plating of the food that had previously been lovely looked like it had just been tossed on the plate. The worse part was the biscuits that were usually light as a feather were lackluster and had a very off taste."

"Poogan's Porch is my favorite restaurant in Charleston and has been for several years. It is a really neat place to begin with - it's a neat old house that has been renovated and converted to its current use. I have been there now about a half a dozen times for dinner. Each time I have been seated in a different room. Every room that I have been in thus far has been wonderful. The food has always been excellent. I think the shrimp and grits is the best in town. It's not soupy and instead has a blue crab gravy. Any place that makes grits with a tomato based broth puts that dish to shame. Moreover, Poogan's uses the wonderful tasso ham as well. I love this place. We celebrated the eve of my graduation there this weekend and it was superb."

"I liked the ample room between tables. The atmosphere is like someone's home. My friend and I split the seafood pasta dish for an additonal $5 fee. It was well-seasoned but a litle on the skimpy side: three little shrimp apiece and one scallop, but I gues that's what one expects in splitting an entre. The banana pudding was quintessential Southern--loved the crunchy cookie layers."

"The room resembled a college dining hall full of tourists in Las Vegas. The salads were a surprising blend of wilted Arugula and rock-hard tomatoes. Our cutlery was removed with the starters and after waiting, we went to the kitchen to replace it. The bouillabaisse special tasted like it was microwaved. The fish had been frozen. "The food was absolutely amazing. We both had the pimento fritters, as well as the plantation fried chicken and there is absolutely nothing I could complain about. The service, great. Our drinks stayed replenished, we were asked multiple times if we were comfortable, and the food was inquired about as well. The seating is a little close to other guests in some areas, so the noise level was slightly more than expected. But it was tolerable, and did not bother us. The building itself is beautiful. May I also add that the biscuits, are the best biscuits I have ever put into my mouth. The prices are fantastic. Neither of us were able to finish our meals. Perfect if you are staying in the mills house!"

"Enjoyed this meal with our daughter when picking her up from CofC. Wow. An adorable place and excellent food. It gets rave reviews for a reason! The mac and cheese and fried green tomato appetizers were generous and delicious. The Buttermilk Fried Chicken, the Plantation Fried Chicken (both of which were moist), the Pan Roasted Duck and the Crispy Skinned Snapper were all absolutely fantastic. We are looking forward to the school year starting again so we'll have an excuse to visit again!"

"Visited on Friday night with group of 5. No place to wait for table, bar area too crowded to even go up and get a drink. Waited a few minutes after reservation for table. But server was excellent, even got kitchen to add a fritter to starter so everyone at table could have their own. Food was really good (mac & cheese to die for, calabash shrimp wonderful). Menu somewhat limited, thought they would have more specials. Overall good experience, but wouldn't go for romantic date...too noisy and crowded."

"This great little restaurant is located walking distance from Charleston's historic district and offers some great local cuisine. The casual atmosphere makes it great for tourists as jeans are acceptable. We'll definitely visit again."

"This was a pleasant surprise! We expected sumptuous traditional southern fare and there were several options that I'm sure would fit that bill. We both however decided on beef- rib eye and filet mignon, respectively - both dishes and accompaniments were outstanding that rivaled or exceeded any premium specialty steak restaurants. Our server, Jack was able, amiable and friendly and his excellent service added to enjoyment. In our 3 day stay in Charleston, my husband and I agreed that this dining experience was easily the best and most memorable of the trip."

"My wife and I went with another couple to celebrate. I felt the food was very good but would like to have had more spice in the Shrimp and Grits. Our waitress was an experienced Mexican lady who did a great job trying to get the mixed drinks just right. I would definitely go here again."

"The pimento cheese fritters looked and tasted like grocery store pre-packaged pimento cheese, not freshed made at all. The grouper was tough and that was the piece I could eat. One portion did not even look like fish and was gross looking, like fat and skin all twisted up. Terrible. They did not offer to take $$ off the bill. Disappointed and made our annivesary meal not worth eating. Overrated."

"We had a lovely dinner, food was GREAT! But our server, Paul was SUPER! Never forgot to check on us and always had a great SMILE on his face. This was our first experience w/Poogan's Porch and it will not be our last. We would love to try lunch also when we are in Charleston again. We brought some friends visiting California and they were DELIGHTED with the appetizers and the entrees we all ordered. DELICIOUS!

"Student son didn't want to go out for BBQ so went to Poogan's Porch...initially because I liked the mix of small plates, overall menu, and prices (I was looking at the lunch menu). Surprisingly not full on a Tues night 'n got 6:45 reserve at 3:30p. Dinner was terrific for 4 of us...heirloom tomato salad, she crab soup, two good-sized crab cakes (slightly spicy) apps; fried chicken, bistro beef, duck breast and fish entrees; blueberry cobbler a la mode 'n choc pecan "pie" w bacon ice cream dessert. Widely touted biscuits were slightly chewy; crab cakes could have served as small entree; pecan pie was good but not gooey enuf for me. I would go back and highly recommend; lunch menu would be a very good value."

"Poogans is one of my top two picks in Charleston. We go about twice a year, and the rest of the year I dream of it! The Plantation Chicken is my favorite meal on earth.

"Our server (Jack) was excellent. Allowed us to try a couple of wines (available by the glass) before we selected a bottle. Just the right amount of attentiveness. It was a "special occasion" dinner, and the host/server each recognized it - nice touch. The food was consistent with the price level: the restaurant is not cheap, so you expect very good food; however, it is not overly expensive either - a good value. We would have given a higher rating overall except for the noise level. There was a large, very loud group in the dining room and a Prom dinner upsatirs (sounds of furniture moving and stomping feet)."
