Fusion Peruvian Cuisine. Critically acclaimed. Artful ambiance. These are the ingredients that create this dynamic San Francisco restaurant, Mochica. Long-time patrons consider us one of San Francisco's best kept secrets. In our cuisine you will find an unmistakable touch of Peru. In every dish the distinct flavors of regional spices come through.
"When a glass of "ice tea" and a glass of chica morada were brought to the table shortly after 7pm, the waiter accidentally spilled the tea all over the table, floor and my guest's lap. He apologized, and returned to clean it up and bring another glass but neglected to bring fresh napkins. The tea had no ice and only filled 2/3 of the glass. We asked for ice, as I noticed my chicha morada also lacked ice and was not filled to the top. The waiter apologized saying they were out of ice... maybe they could have made a run to get some bags of ice?! and filled our glasse to the top... While waiting for our entrees to arrive, the waiter asked us if we wanted to see the dessert menu... The food was not as good as B4."

"Peru is our vacation destination this year. We have tasted several Peru menus in SF. Mochica is a good choice for small plates and traditional food. We particularly enjoyed the "Ceveche's" sp?"

"This was our first dinner at Mochica (ate there for lunch once before) and it was a good as we remembered. A mixture of wonderful seasonings and flavors and very attentive service. Strongly recommend this restaurant."

"This was our second visit. The first time everything was fantastic! This time some dishes were great, some a bit disappointing. (Beef hearts were wonderful first visit, tough this time. Tequenos didn't have much flavor.) The desserts were fabulous - the cookies with dulce de leche are amazing! Recommend going with several people so you can share the small plates and taste many dishes."

"We had reservations for four. We were seated promptly. First thing you notice is the place is noisy and it was not even full at the time. Food was delicious. All the dishes we ordered, Tapas and main entries were v.good. Service could have been little faster. However our server was nice and explained the dishes well I will recommend Mochica if you are in the mood for a Peruvian food."

"Had the Chicharones, Palta Rellena, Cebiches Pescado, and a shortrib dish (no longer on menu). All were absolutely amazing! Really impressed with this place. Now on my list of favorites."

"We loved everything we ordered - about 6 tapas in order to taste as much as possible! Highly recommend the portabella mushrooms. It was a loud, fun, and at the same time intimate environment. Only thing that would make the experience better would be if the kitchen could stay open later than 9pm on weekend nights.
I have been highly recommending Mochica to everyone."

"Great food - was impressed with every dish that I sampled. My group was hit with a 20% gratuity charge for a party of six, even though this was not listed on the menu. While my standard tipping rate is 20% - I didn't appreciate this being added to the bill unexpectedly."

"We were looking for a casual, comfortable and relatively quiet restaurant in which to talk to a visiting relative and Mochica fit the bill beautifully. The reception was warm, the waiter attentive and pleasant and the ceviche worth returning for. Because our main purpose was to enjoy the company, we sat and talked too long on a busy Fri. night, and the hostess let us know in a very gracious manner. of course, as soon as she came over, I knew the purpose and we immediately got up to leave and she acknowledged that with a "thank you for understanding." In short, the overall experience enhanced the evening."

"I learned not to go anywhere on the expiration day of a Groupon. Last time it was quieter and more pleasant, but the staff were really trying to take care of everyone even though they were over-busy. The food didn't run out (we ended the lunch period) so that's a plus!"

"I went in on the last day of my Groupon offer. I couldn't get anyone to go with me so I was dining solo. Good thing I made a reservation because they were turning away anyone without a reservation and there was a line waiting outside the door at the 5:30 opening time. I was seated promptly at a table (thank you! I am so used to getting the "bar" seating as a single - they also had "shared" bench and table seating for couples and groups) and looked over the menu. My eye immediately went to the traditional Lomo Saltado as my default entree and I asked the wait staff to suggest a small plate to accompany. Would it be the Chicharonnes dish or the stuffed avocado. She suggested the Avocado. I ordered a nice glass of Sangria to go with"

"A great dining experience is not just based on the food but as well as the service. This was the first time and last time that I will be coming here. I waited two hours and a half in total for my food to arrive, as well as 20 minutes for drinks which the rude waiter had forgotten and I had to repeatedly remind him. After my first order he comes over to my table 40 minutes later to let me know that my order was not available. The place is small and they obviously don't have enough staff. As for the food it was good but not good enough to wait for two plus hours and have rude service. I decided to try this spot because I saw good reviews on yelp but it was a great dissapointment. For good Peruvian Mi Lindo Peru is better and nicer."

"The food was tasty. Loved their paella and cerviche mixto. Their service needs improvement. They seemed short staffed. They only had two waitresses that night and service was slow. We had to waive down a waitress just to ask for water."

"My BFF and I shared the Arroz con Mariscos, Papa a la Huancaina, Palta Rellena, & Cebiche Pescado. My friend had a Sangria too. The fish in the Cebiche was on the chewy side and the acidity was a bit higher. The Palta Rellena was ok but a bit bland. Papas a la Huancaina was good but there were only 3 pieces of potato and 1/2 egg - I am used to getting more. Sangria was mediocre. The Arroz con Mariscos has heavy saffron flavor and not much else. It was ok food but I have had better Peruvian elsewhere for less! The presentation was nice though - everything was well laid out and the waitress we had was very nice and not pushy. It was decent and a cute place but honestly without a Groupon, I would probably not go back. Parking is typical SF."

"As a Peruvian, I grew up eating Peruvian food at home, in restaurants in the US, and back in Lima. I won't claim to be an expert, but I know when elements of a dish are wrong. At Mochica, their lomo saltado was disappointing across the board. The fries were burnt, the tomato was uncooked, the sauce lacked the soy and red wine vinegar authenticity. This lack of attention to detail surprised me since their sister restaurant La Costanera is easily one of my favorite Peruvian restaurants. On top of that, our water did not get refilled... ever. For a restaurant that charges $17 for an entree, I guess I just expected more."

"Mochica is simply bullet-proof. Every time we've visited, the food is incredible. Their Mochica Cebiche is one of my favorite things in the entire world! Their beet salad made me a beet loving convert. Their entrees are a good size and the flavors are stunning. We can't wait to go back!"

"The entrees were so small that I left feeling like I had a light lunch instead. What a disappointment. For the price of an expensive entree $20 (given the location and neighborhood), we went home wanting. It was also so dark you could not read your menu which created a stressful evening. The waiter was nowhere when you needed something; we had to ask for a spoon twice (my husband had seafood soup) and by the time the spoon came, the spoon had turned tepid. I would definitely not recommend this restaurant."

"Highly overpriced, very small portions. Octopus starter and fish ceviche were wonderful, stuffed squid and pork entrees were lackluster. Stick with the small plates. Also it seemed weird to be placed at a long community table even though we'd made a Valentine's Day reservation for two. Something a little more intimate would have been nice. Music was bad pop and fairly loud, not the ambiance we had hoped for."

"This was my second visit to the restaurant; there were changes in the decor since the first visit a few years ago which enhanced the ambiance. The food was delicious; we were a bit disappointed that they were out of at least four dishes at a relatively early time of the day (12:45pm for lunch)- there were only a handful of diners at that time. They were out of the lambshanks, pork adobado, the chocolate dessert and the coconut flan.
But what we did enjoy the Pulpito ala Parilla, Palta Rellana, Lomo Saltado and Seafood Fritto Misto. Service was attentive, friendly and helpful though a tad slow as there was only one server. But this was not a problem for us as we were not in a rush and was enjoying our experience."

"Everything we ordered was delicious! We shared small plates, which included corn and beet salad, ceviche mochica (halibut served 3 ways), chicharrones, pork spareribs, yucca fries. The portions are small. The order of yucca fries included 4 3-bite fries."

"If it weren't for the rude hostess and hour long wait on a Monday night, I would have given this restaurant a much better rating and would be much more likely to recommend this place to friends. We got to the restaurant 7 minutes late, the hostess lied to us and said a group at our table was just finishing up (when in reality, they just started eating dessert), and after 40 minutes passed by and the party finally left, the hostess said they were cleaning up the table (20 minutes later..we sat down). When we brought up the fact that we had been waiting for 1 hour on our table, the hostess responded "well you were late." by 7 minutes. Rude. Food was excellent, atmosphere was well done for date or a group of friends, and noise level wasn't bad"

"The constant disco beat through the entire evening very annoying. Not at all what I expected in a latin resturant. It's a resturant not a bar or disco club. Background soft latin music or guitar music for this resturant would be more appropriate."

"Authentic Peruvian food at a reasonable price. The only thing missing are Pisco Sours. But the non-alcoholic Chicha Morada is an excellent drink, and the sweetness is the perfect foil for the 3 progressively spicy ceviches. The fried garbanzo beans brought to the table was an inspired idea. The Aji de Gallina was also delicious, as was the Lucuma Cheesecake and cookies with dulce de leche filling."
