Braai (South African for barbeque) is Manhattans only contemporary South African restaurant and brandy bar. Showcasing game meats and a diverse spectrum of culinary influences (Malay, Portuguese, French, Dutch & German) that create the fabric of our rainbow cuisine. Set under a vaulted thatch ceiling and tree trunk lined walls, it brings a little piece of the bush & "braaivleis" to the concrete jungle.
"Braai is a wonderful Theater District find with an exceptionally fun and delicious menu of South African tapas and entrees, amazing cocktails and wines, and a superb staff that attends to you with amazing care but without being intrusive. The decor is simple but inviting and the food is dimply delicious and perfectly prepared."

"My best friend requested to go to a South African restaurant for her Birthday to try something new. I chose to take her to Braai in New York.
When we walked in, a hostess greeted us and asked us where we wanted to sit. We thought the restaurant looked very sophisticated. The lights were dim and candles were lit at every table. We were a little confused as to what to order but our waiter cleared up all the questions we had. Our waiter was friendly and made himself available. Customer service was great.
Overall, this is one of the restaurants that I will continue to go to whenever I am visiting the New York area. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is very relaxing."

"The place has wires sticking out everywhere- looks like a construction site. Service was appaling and unorganized. Food was okay- the menu doesn't really specify what the dish is enough. Food took forever to come out, even after we told them we were in a hurry."

"This is a perfect example of an interesting menu that doesn't live up to expectations. While everything that we had was good, there was nothing that made you sit up and take notice. It was all just okay. they do have a nice south african wine list, but the food went from normal to boring, never exciting or enticing, with the exception of the ostrich sliders, which were a notch above everything else."

"Interesting sounding menu, but the flavor did not live up to the promise. The service was amateur. The waiter who took our order delivered the wrong appetizer, then forgot our side dish when he delivered the entrees. We didn't bother to stick around and be disappointed for dessert too."

"The space is below street-level and narrow with tables in one side and bar on the other and a small dining room at the rear. The appetizers were very good, we had ostrich sliders, vegetable samosas and venison carpaccio for four of us. I had a strip steak and Lisa had branzino and although those choices are not adventurous, they were prepared perfectly. The wine list was all South African and the Left bank, a bourdeau-type blend was terrific. We'd go back."

"They're mid-way through a renovation / redesiugn. It's pushing for a much more chic / Cape Town feel than the previou African Safari themed place. I like it. But given they're currently half way through it, there are are a few unfinished touches."

"Food was not really African at all. We had Indian, Middle Eastern and good old American. Tasty but not at ALL what we were hoping for. Service was terrible! Waiter completely ignored Us while gushing over table next to us. Would not go back."

"Do. Not. Go. Had been here once before for drinks during the World Cup and had excellent Peri-Peri Bloody Marys and standard bar fare. Decided to try dinner. Rude host, only the host and one server on when the place suddenly filled up including a table of 15. We 3 ordered their version of tapas -- "deviled" chicken livers, lamb chops, mac and cheese with shaved sausage, chicken wings peri-peri and grilled octopus. No flavors whatsoever. And when we got the bill (I had one bloody Mary at the bar waiting for my party, then one at the table (they are great)) I was charged for 3. The waiter said "I made two myself for you and delivered them." I told him he was mistaken; he might have made two more but only one was delivered to me. Don't go."

"Took a large group there - they were very hospitable to a large group but the manager was very pushy and made us feel a bit uncomfortable. Ultimately a great value for what we got but it is not the classy, delicious place it used to be."

"I was not expecting the food to be this good, probably because I didn't know what to expect. But it was amazing! Try the octopus appetizer and and order any of the lamb or fish dishes. My friend had the branzino and I had the lamb shank and both were excellent."

"We used OpenTable to make a reservation, but when we arrived, they had no record of the reservation. Since it was early and they were not full, it was not a problem. We suspect they accidentally checked us in before we arrived, since we received the points nonetheless. The menu is varied enough for differing tastes, but somewhat unusual. We tried the beet salad and the lamb empanadas. Really liked the empanadas! For main course we chose the salmon and the ostrich filet. Really liked the salmon which was prepared in a slightly different way with a crunchy coating. The ostrich was much like duck breast, but not as tender as duck would be--nor as flavorful. For dessert we had the mango mousse and the warm Malva pudding--YUM!"

"The last time I dined at Braai was about a year ago and the quality of the food seems to have declined a bit. There have been some minor renovations to the structure of the restaurant but the food seems to have been negatively affected. One of the people who accompanied me to brunch had several issues with her peri-peri mary and her steak and eggs. I hope that we just caught the chef on a bad day and that this is merely an aberration and not the new status quo."

"Website is entirely inaccurate. There is no South African theme, no reed-thatch ceiling and no African ambiance whatsoever and sadly no South African staff at all. Menu is interesting. Food we had was varied. This restaurant is a nice idea but it is nowhere near what it is portrayed to be. It seems to be run entirely by Spanish speakers. We had a Sunday brunch table and the manager/waiter arrived so late that we had to be served by the bus boy who, although very pleasant, had no idea. Whoever owns this restaurant needs to take a closer look at what is going on here because this was a disappointing experience."

"This is our third time eating at Braai and each time we have found it to be quite good. The service is excellent and the menu is interesting and varied. We spoke with the owner and he told us that the restaurant is undergoing renovations and described the end result. It sounds great. We will definitely return."

"Apparently this used to be a better place. The restuarant looked a bit bare--apparently renovations have been taking over a year--no excuse for that really. The ostrich is great and the rest was just slightly off. Like the deviled chicken livers could have been served with some toast points, the venison stew needed some rice or carb to absorb the stewiness. The salmon and malay roti were on the bland side. The best thing were the ostrich sliders, both conceptually and taste wise. For now, I'd skip this place."

"Great for pre-theatre dining - interesting and somewhat inventive menu and nice selection of South African wines. Definitely would have enjoyed a more prime time experience - there before a play so didn't get to see restaurant full - and there are many dishes it would have been fun to try. Definitely will be back."

"I'm SouthAfricn an went to braai with friend to have try out South African food, unfortunately the dining experience was nothing worth bragging to friends about. The Manager and wait staff were not very friendly, they seemed annoyed when asked about the dishes and the restaurant looks nothing like the website. I had the ostrich & curry mash potatoes which was god however the pap & boerewors needs to be changed. The boerewors was flavourless and skinny looking more like a sausage than the real thing. The pap (which I know was krimmel pap) should probably be made the more traditional as that is a staple most africans eat and so my guest was not too impressed since she is from another African country. Unfortunately this was not a place I woul"

"We dined early on our way to a 7:00pm curtain, so the restaurant was very quiet. The food was absolutely perfect. I usually order salmon and this was prepared in a way that makes me want to go back asap for more. We wouldn't usually try a South African restaurant, but after checking out the menu on line and almost salivating at the choices, we took a chance. My friend and I were very pleased, and although we say, "we have to come back here again" quite often after dining at other fine restaurants in the city....we are going back to Braai for sure."

"Perhaps we simply did not order the right things, but I thought the food here was very "ok." The grilled octopus to start was good, but both my husband and I were disappointed with our main course. He had the ostrich and I had a veal dish. Both lacked flavor and fell in the category of "ok." Overall, was not very impressed. Probably wont be back."

"It is a shame that the service is so poor here. The waiters simple do not care. One took up a straw with his bare fingers and passed it to another to give to me. I asked for a new straw and the same thing was repeated. Eventually I got my own straw. I don't know if the are renovating, but the appearance was 'blank'. Too bad because the food is actually very tasty. Will not be returning anytime soon. It stayed empty for the two hour brunch, only 3 tables."
