Masa Southwest Bar and Grill is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Just like it's location in Boston, Masa offers an award winning menu of "new Southwest" cuisine, pairing flavors and cooking styles of the Southwestern kitchen with local New England ingredients. They have been awarded "Best New Restaurant" by Food & Wine Magazine. Allison Arnet of the Boston Globe has acclaimed Masa, "A Southwestern Air of Sophistication." Matt Schafer of the Boston Herald has also acclaimed Aviles's food "Amazing." Owner and Chef Philip Aviles, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, brings to Masa the talent and background that makes this restaurant one of Greater Boston's finest.

"Took some friends for Sunday brunch. Restaurant was not overly busy. Menu looks good: a lot of options, most of them sound appetizing with a little bit of creativity. Appetizer was good, everything else was not worth eating including the omelette in which they forgot to put the cheese. We did not send back because the service was decidedly not happening that day. I eat out a great deal and have been really disappointed in my last few Open Table restaurant experiences. Not blaming Open Table - I am just expressing surprise as I usually feel comfortable taking guests to an Open Table restaurant."

"My boyfriend and I recently went to Masa for brunch, and it was fabulous. We had the Fiesta brunch which came with an appetizer and entre. I had the southwest eggs benedict, and it was delicious. My boyfriend has the Huevos Rancheros and also enjoyed the a lot. All of the wait staff were very friendly and attentive. Nice place to go when you are looking to get away from traditional waffles and omelets for brunch."

"I met with a business associate for an early dinner. As we have not talked for over 10 months we wanted to catch up and we were contentiously interrupted by the wait stuff that insisted that we will place an order for a drink, appetizer, main course etc. After 20minutes of nonstop interruptions we paced our order. The food arrived shortly thereafter, my fish dish was cocked too fast and therefore was dry. My colleague’s spare ribs were very fatty and were also cooked too fast. The tequila was very good (although I asked for Margarita). The ice cream was OK.
Overall, I do not understand the rush. It supposed to be a 4 star restaurant but it was not on that day. For me, there are better southwest restaurants in the area.

"not my first time at Masa....brought friends who had never been and ended up being embarrassed. The wait staff was friendly but there were not enough of them. We waited too long to be served and then too long for the food. Specific requests on the food were not met.....and the food was mediocre at best. For the price...which was much more that it deserved.

"We had a party of 5 for Mother's Day and it was perfect! We sat near the open kitchen and actually interacted with Chef Jose! He was so professional during an incredibly busy evening and even found the time to joke with us. After dinner he sent over two desserts (which were so delicious!) and then stopped by to talk with us! It made our already excellent night even better! We LOVE Masa!!"

"Masa is definitely one of the best restaurants in the Woburn/Winchester area. The southwestern twist bumps a good menu up to a great one, and the preparation and service is well-executed. "I am continually impressed by the consistent high quality that Masa turns out. I have eaten lunch and dinner there repeatedly over the past five years and have never been disappointed. The service is always impeccable, the food is always inventive and excellent, and they portions are sized so that you walk away satisfied but not bloated. And all this in Woburn. If I am not going in to Boston or Cambridge, this is my pick for a great dining experience."

"Phenomenal food and plate presentations. However, totally undersized, understaffed, poorly managed kitchen makes receiving the food impossible. We ordered drinks, then appetizers, then waited a solid hour for dinner to be served, as did everyone else. The waitress said everyone "came in at once and the kitchen was overwhelmed." The barbecued and specialty chickens were both fabulous--cooked to perfection. Corn chowder was wonderful. They did give complimentary desserts as a consolation--flan & mango sorbet, which were also great."

"Angela was a perfect server. She was personable, courteous, and charming. (she even commented on my eyeglasses). She took the time to answer some menu questions, offered recommendations, was quick to make sure that we liked all of our courses and was very pleasant to be around.

"All the portions were on the small side especially the short rib which was two small boneless rectangles from a single 2 inch rib.
The steak frite was ok but smothered in a very thick sauce. The layer of red peppers and arugala was excellent with a subtle dressing.

"Masa is a nice place, with a creative menu of food and drinks, but sometimes falls slighly short. (Not bad, just not outstansing for all of the dishes we ordered). My dish , a Sea Bass ins a smoky salsa with a corn tostada under, was the best of the lot, A Tune Roll appetizer failed to impress all in our party (I liked it more than 3 others did), and our friends pork was overdone. (They did not ask how she wanted it cooked. Overall the food was inventive, but could have used a touch more attention in cooking and prep, which kept it from very good overall. I will go back, and suspect this may have been an "off night" in some dishes for Kitchen although Service was very good, and our waitress was very helpful and attentive."

"Good selection of dishes that are unique and presented artfully on large plates. I had the pork loin. It came with a funky looking pear shaped pie that I think had potato with a meat filling. Overall the dish tasted good, but it didn't exceed my expectations, because the sauce could have been spicier and the meat less dry and more flavorful. My friends had the sea bass. It looked good, but they complained that the fish was kind of rubbery. As a desert I had the flan, which was not as good as flan I know from Mexico because it was too dense. My friends had the chocolate browny tamales - delicious! Wait service was very friendly but a bit slow (somewhat understaffed). Took a while to get appetizers and my glass of beer stood empty too long."

"Only two of six drinks were good.. One beer tasted like Heineken and one like Budweiser, and the specialty margarita was devoid of flavor. The cornbread was outstanding - the highlight of the meal. The chowder was good, although not hot, and the onion rings were also a hit. Between our appetizers and our meal, there was a 20 minute wait. A table seated at the same time as we were received their bill before we got our food (we were a party of three). We had two overdone meat dishes (medium rare came out medium well), and a potato side that clearly substituted ketchup for tomato paste. Our waitress was extremely rude when we asked for a split check, literally throwing the receipts on the table. Waste of $150, and we will not go back."

"I had read the reviews about cold food, but figured it had to be a one off mistake, so I was very suprised when two of our four meals had to be returned to the kitchen for being cold. Once they returned, the food was very good, just find it interesting that servings would be consistantly cold? I wonder if the food is made in Boston and sent out to the Winchester location and warmed up there?
Give it a try, like is said the food was good once it came out warm."

"While the food was prepared properly and the dish visually inviting, the portions were small and were not well balanced. Vegetables are not part of the entree, but you can order on the side. That should be told to the customer by the waitstaff. We did order vegetables, but never got them. It was odd that 2 of the 4 dishes we ordered were paired with some item smothered in overpowering, basic BBQ sauce (that tasted like it came from a bottle), which made the meal not so enjoyable.
The decor is bland. They kind of "threw in" touches of the Southwest here and there to keep with the theme. The music was not traditional or inviting either. Expensive meal for not that much food."

"We always like to try new places. We found Masa SW on OpenTable. The reviews were good. We arrived and were quickly seated. There ambiance was nice and the service was good. However, we were disappointed with the food. My wife had the catch of the day, and I had the rack of lamb. Both the lamb and the Red Snapper were tasty and well cooked. However, the quality fell from there. Both plates included mashed potatoes and miniature corn on the cob. The potatoes were bland and reminded me of something you'd get from a cafeteria. They were plated with an ice cream scooper. The corn seemed to be straight out of a can. Neither the potatoes or corn were hot. We were also disappointed with the appetizer."

However, the menu was very limited... Portion size was small to moderate.
I ordered the pork shoulder. Normally this is a good sized piece of meat.
It was de-boned, very small and full of fat. I only got at least 4 fork full servings from it... Waiter said the way it's cooked fat melts off. Not on this one...
Appetizer was very small to moderate and skimpy...

"This was a return visit for us with another couple. The food is innovative, nicely presented and always enjoyable. On this trip what really stood out were the specialty margaritas. Both men had the habanero-watermellon margaritas and they were outstanding with just enough heat to make the drink interesting. The ladies had the coconut margaritas and seemed to love them as well. We are looking forward to our next visit."
