Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar - Fairmont San Francisco
A visit to San Francisco is not complete without experiencing Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar. Consistently awarded for serving 'San Francisco's Best Happy Hour' by San Francisco Magazine, The San Francisco Bay Guardian and most recently, Where Magazine. The Tonga Room offers exceptional Pacific Rim Asian Cuisine in a tropical setting that includes thunder and rainstorms. It is the perfect escape after a busy day of meetings or shopping along Union Square. Be sure to try the Mai Tai, voted the City's best by Conde Nast Traveler.
Reservations are taken for dinner only. Hurricane Bar and Happy Hour guests are welcomed on a first-come first-served basis.

"My Wife and I were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and decided we would check out the Tonga Room. The food was good, the drinks were great and the band was excellent. Our server was a great help and knew when to come in to see how we were doing. We will be back."

"So, the service is bad, and the food is a little overpriced (plus the $7/person entertainment fee) but there is a band on a boat in the pool. And it rains. And its really fun. So, totally worth it."

"Aside from the fact that the Tonga Room has great ambiance and historical at that as a native San Franciscan born and raised here there is no better place to enjoy a wonderful evening. music is always great and a lot of fun listening or dancing. Have eaten and enjoyed every entertainment venue in the city during the last 30 years and still look forward to coming to the Tonga Room and bringing along friends that are looking for a special San Francisco experience.
The Tonga room is supremely unique!
Aside from great food and music the thing that makes the Tonga Room stand out is the STAFF! As someone that enjoys every 4 and 5 star restaurant in the city the staff here at the Tonga Room stands head and shoulder above the rest! Thank you!!"

"We had such a great time at the Tonga Room. Two people in our group of four had not been there in years. They were really pleased. The food, service, and music were just terrific. It was the perfect, special place for a surprise birthday party. We plan to go back, and all four of us would definitely recommend it."

"It is what it is - fun. The Tiki drinks are much better at the (original - not the franchised!) Trader Vic in Emeryville, and Smugglers Grove a few miles away is infinetely better. But you don't go for the food, or even the drinks - you go for the true and tried 60s and pre style Tiki"

"The food is not great and the service can be a little slow. However, the decor, thunderstorms, moving band boat and awesome cocktails more than make up for anything of the Tonga Room's failing. We always have an awesome time when we come to the Tonga Room. If you make a reservation for dinner, you will get to sit next to the lagoon and won't have to worry about the long wait times in line or the cover charge."

"We went to the Tonga room expecting good food and atmosphere. Our waiter was nice and it was fun to be in something as decorative as the Tonga room, but as soon as the meal started it went down hill.
We ordered the family special for four people and a few alcoholic drinks. It was loud so it was hard to hear people and the food was the most disappointing part. Our soup and salad tasted awful and it was very expensive even though we went durring happy hour. They did try to bring us out a different soup (which was good but only one of us ate it). I would recommend going somewhere else for dinner and save your money."

"The best part of the experience is dining while the band is playing. We were there for my daughters 16th birthday. We ate dinner and danced with our kids. We had a great time. The place was packed when we arrived so service was a bit slow. The restaurant staff kept carrying boxes (kitchen /bar supplies) and a couple of folding tables back and forth to the kitchen. As a customer, I didn't like that. Overall, I've always enjoyed visiting the Tonga Room. It's very expensive but a fun experience ."

"Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar is 'great for kids' for its selection of 'mocktails', but is also fun for adults with extensive tropical cocktail menu, live band, and dancing (dining experience was very quiet until band started up later in the evening). Atmosphere is really fun. Food is quite good, but not the same caliber as other more 'foodie'-centric spots in the city. This is still an institution that I'd recommend all SF townies experience at least once, or, a great place for folks visiting from elsewhere."

"I saw this place on an Anthony Bourdain show. Its a rediculious place! We just had a couple appetizers (a good recommendation Nya local who warned us the food is about the level of Applebee's). The tiki drinks are so sugary your teeth will hurt! I laughed hysterically when the band came floating out on a boat in the pool! This place is certainly an experience!"

"A kitschy fave, though the food on prior visits never has been very good. The food this time, however, showed striking improvement. We could actually pronounce various dishes to be quite tasty and well-prepared. HOWEVER, fish fraud was involved. Three of us ordered butterfish, which is listed as a staple on the regular menu. We were NOT served butterfish. The fish on our plate closely resembled halibut. The halibut was good, but was not what we ordered. The waiter was so rude and crass that we didn't complain to him about it, and the halibut preparation was good enough to accept. But no self-respecting restaurant should cheat diners this way."

"I had a friend show me the famous tonga room back in the mid 90's and I continue to bring all my out of town friends and clients here. It's fun, and you ca dress up in vintage clothes and or show up in casual attire. Great for a couple and perfect for the hard to please groups. I'm in the tattoo industry and trying to find a place to bring fellow artist from the rest of America or from Europe and Asia can be like herding cats. This place will please them all. It's tops!!!"

"Made reservations but was seated (for two) at the end of the lagoon. Packed like sardines. So, we couldn't watch and hear the band and we had to pay cover charges for it. Why bother making reservations? Earliest I could get was at 9:45 PM for dinner. Probably would have had better seatings if we just walked in. Food was okay but nothing "fusion" about it. Previously enjoyed the Tonga Room before but it seems like it has changed. To be honest it was a disappointment for me."

"My friends and I had dinner here to celebrate my 30th birthday, and it was A LOT of fun. I would have given the Tonga Room 5 stars if the food was better- but it was just okay. I found the food options to be limited in general. But you can't beat the atmosphere, the fun cocktail menu, the great service, and the live entertainment. The band sang me a song for my birthday, they brought me a free dessert, and they sat us (on our request) right next to the lagoon. Great time, highly recommend it."

"i been at tonga room so many times to celebrate family birthday - at least three three times a year - unfortunately this time - i am not very please with the food quality and so as my guest - we are very disappointed - i cooked a lots of type of dishes at home to serve to family and friends - i will rate my cooking three times better than the one we ordered from your restaurant - most of the food was salty - from calamari to the main dish - plenty of sodium and the hot pot soup - do not even have a flavor - the mongolian beef and the shrimp vegetable do not have the flavor we are all expecting - i am sorry to say this - but i think - i have rather spent my nite at BENIHANA for the price i paid at your place - anyway the Ambiance is good."

"I consider this restaurant a novelty, come once to see what the hype is all about and that's it. The lava flow drink that I keep hearing about is large and fun to share; we got the one that serves four. The drink itself is surprisingly strong, which I appreciate, and reminds me of a hurricane. The service was excellent and very accommodating for my party of eight with two babies. The atmosphere is definitely unique with lots of energy. It's a more interactive Rainforest Cafe.
The food was the most forgettable part. The menu is heavily Chinese influenced with the likes of orange chicken and chow mein, but lacks in depth. Chinatown is literally two blocks away, far cheaper, and tastier. Sad to say, but Panda Express has better food."

"As the featured restaurant in the Fairmount we expected something much more upscale. The deep fried everything, the abrupt waiters and the tacky decor left us quite disapointed. My stir fried meal was drowned in a thick sauce that looked and tasted like in came out of a gallon jug from Costco. On a more positive note the band playing on the floating boat were very good. In hindsight with a name like the Tonga Room we should have checked it out more closely, but as it was in the Fairmount and did describe its food as Asian fusion we took a chance, but in reality the meal we had was similar to any that can be had in your local Chinese cafe."

"My family came up from San Diego to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. We were a party of ten adults. The food and ambiance was great. The music was a plus to the evening. All of got the chance to dance and have fun. It was a first experience for all of us. We will be back!"

"This is the second time I have been here. The food was great the first time, but the second time I went the food was a miss. I went with 6 people and I tried everyone's dish. Everyone's food lacked flavor. We had to ask for chili paste just to add some flavor to the food. The food is overpriced for what it is.
The drinks were good - nothing spectacular but they were good.
The entertainment was great! I would only go back for drinks and maybe some dancing with my mom (since they played a lot of songs that I know she would appreciate).
I would recommend only going for drinks, not food. It is good for large groups.
Places to go afterwards: Smugglers Cove to fit with the Tiki theme."
