The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish.
Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker.
A bipartisan favorite, we have occupied the nation’s capital since 1995, anchored across from the Verizon Center and around the corner from the International Spy Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Chinatown.
Make waves at our racetrack-shaped bar or sup on seafood underneath the hull-like ceiling in our restaurant’s main dining room. Either way, be presidential and order a cup of our New England Clam Chowder; it’s been served at every Inauguration since 1981. Other accolades include “Best Place for Great Seafood” (Washingtonian Magazine, 2008) and “Best Crab Cakes” (Washingtonian Magazine, 2008)

"Something was missing food wise on this visit. Stuffed shrimp with crabmeat was not as good. Shrimp were small and crabmeat was skimpy. Maybe my recent visit to Christfield's in Silver Spring was an unfair comparison. Shrimp in wife's pasta was larger and tasty. Third person had seafood casserole and seemed happy."

"Service was excellent. The halibut was perfect. My granddaughter had shrimp and pasta and it was a hit, and my husband had perch which he really enjoyed. We were made to feel welcome and felt like the restaurant was glad we were there. We love seafood and for a chain we were very pleasantly surprised at the service and quality. Great coffee too."

"If you want to eat fish this is always a good place. You can virtually pick your fish and the method you want to have it cooked. One of us had Arctic Char wood grilled and the other sea bass baked. Both were perfectly done and a treat. The sides were also just right. If you want breaded crustaceans or other breaded things from the sea the place is OK but not as elegantly cooked as fish. Breaded anything cooked in boiling oil is pretty much the same anywhere as far as I am concerned. Come here for good cooking."

"Food was good, nothing outstanding. Place was crowded mainly because the Capitals were playing a division playoff game the night we were there. Glad I reserved a table. The service was good, waiter was busy but managed to keep up with us and his other tables. Food arrived correctly (cold food cold hot food hot. For down town DC prices were what I expected. Portions were comparable for value and price. Over all everything was good and I would consider eating here again, but will also checkout other establishments in the area first."

"although we have dined here at least ten times, this was not a good experience. My husband ordered the surf n turf which arrived with cold broccoli, the wrong starch, lobster unshelled and no steak knife or tools to remove the lobster. We were finally able to request for the lobster to be removed, which was returned cold and by that time, we had to return the steak, which was not cooked to our specifications. My husband ate the steak but had the lobster removed from the bill. I had a simple fried shrimp dish which was tasty."

"I took someone there for lunch for a birthday celebration. Got her order totally wrong and were very sluggish about bringing out the correct selection. By the time it arrived, was too late to eat and we had to box it up and go. Just got a "sorry" with no compensation on the bill.
Apparently accuracy not a big issue there, doubt I'll be back."

"I've eaten at many Legals before, including this one; however, everything was just "spot on" this last weekend. The server was great, and the meals were just as we hoped. They let us drink before and after, staying around pretty late. The vibe was just good. I had a special, very tasty."

"I am a tough critic in general so don't take my "good" for a regular "good". Slight mix up regarding a quiet table for my date and I. We were initially seated next to a large party (10+) the host was very accomadating to are requested seat change. After that everything was smooth sailing. Timing of the appetizer and main course was perfect and overall a nice place to go. The dinning hall is slightly more formal than the bar area, and it was a little noisy, but afterall it was a saturday night. I might go back, but if I don't it's not because I didn't like it there are just too many places in D.C. to try out."
