Tangata
Tangata (or "mankind" in the tribal Maori language of New Zealand) features sleek, contemporary decor, glass walls and a ceiling framed with stuccoed beams and large sky lights allowing ambient light to illuminate the main dining area. Located in the historic setting of the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art, the 160-seat restaurant dedicates half of its seating to alfresco dining on two patio areas with larger seating capacities available for private events. Residing within a lush mission-style courtyard featuring fountains, year-round flowers and a Spanish-style balcony, Tangata offers a truly magical setting. Tangata serves a diverse menu of California cuisine infused with Joachim Splichal´s award-winning French signature style.

"We older people enjoy museums but often need a break from standing and walking. Seeing the Bowers and then resting while having a nice lunch and then seeing more of the Bowers Museum was a perfect day. The food at Tangata is really good."

"This is a very convenient lunch option if you are visiting the Bowers Museum. It is located right across from the gift shop and looks at the beautiful museum courtyard. There are a few tables outside which provide a great setting but you can see the sky through the glass ceiling even if you are sitting inside. The service is thoughtful and the food is tasteful."

"Food is like another exhibit here in Tangata. Everything was prepared fresh, the presentation was wonderful and the tastes were awesome. We had the brushetta for appetizer, my hubby had the lamb and I had the spaghetti with manila clams. My hubby said that the lamb there was the best he's ever tasted and my spaghetti was perfect too. Our desserts were wonderful as well. Terri this restaurant, you will not be disappointed!"

"We have been eating at Tangata since it opened. We always make it part of our Bowers experience. The menu is excelent, and tying a couple items to exhibits is a fun touch. The service is friendly and professional, but this wouldn't matter if the food wasn't so good. My husband loves the compressed salad and I trust the chef to get my burger exactly as I like it"

"Enjoyed a quiet lunch on Thursday, the 16th of May. The sliced beet, goat cheese appetizer was excellent and well displayed. We enjoyed the ravioli as well as the salmon. THe creme brulee and the apple tart complimented a fine lunch.

"We went to Tangata to celebrate Mother's Day. While we were immediately seated, the wait time for a server was rather long. We actually went to look for our server three times during the course of the visit. It appeared that the restaurant was not quite prepared for the heavy volume of visitors. The buffet was nice, but the dessert table was sparse. The entire event was over-priced and under-delivered. It was a bit disappointing, as we have visited this establishment before and enjoyed it."

"This was my first time to Tangata.
It was Mothers Day, and the place was packed.
First the good points. The grounds and the museum itself were beautiful. The personel were very helpful, polite, and courteous.
On the downside, it was a buffet. When we arrived at the spread, there were no dishes for us to put our food on. Ourselves and about 5 other people milled around for a couple minutes before someone came with plates. The food looked good and relatively fresh, but there was absolutely no taste. No spice, no salt on the table. Very bland, all of it. No homeruns in the entire menu.
When trying to pay for our meal, the waiter lost my credit card, then found it. It took about 20 minutes just to get out of the place.

"This was our second time in 5 years eating at Tangata and we were not disappointed. The salmon salad and the creme brulee along with the ambiance were excellent and having the option to sit on the patio on such a beautiful day was wonderful. Highly recommend for a special occasion."

"Lunch on 4/27/13 was the first time for us to eat at Tangata (there were 3 in my party). The restaurant was pretty crowded that day as there was a Bead Society show/sale in the courtyard and the Lucy exhibition was ending that weekend. In spite of all that, we were treated courteously and served promptly. I only ate a portion of my lunch, but my friends ate all of theirs. We all had creme brulee for our treat and it was very good. All in all it was an enjoyable experience."

"It was a very busy Saturday @ the Bowers Museum, where Tangata is located, but the food was fabulous, the staff was curtious, friendly and extremely patient with the large crowd trying to eat. Fortunately, I'd made a reservation ahead and was seated a few minutes early when I checked in. Outside table was great with comfortable temperature, great people watching, and efficient and not rushed wait service. A most enjoyable experience and I highly recommend a day @ the Museum and a wonderful lunch!!"

"This was our 3rd time lunching here.
Lovely way to end our viewing of the Medici Gems Exhibit. The BlueCrab Cakes are the best West of Maryland. Hubby had The Renaissance Buger and delicously complex. I had The WildMushroom Ravioli with WhiteTruffle sauce...OUTSTANDING! I am still thinking about it 4 days later."

"This was our second time dining at Tangata and it was as good as the first. We love the menu choices which had changed from our first visit and it was fun to see new offerings. So many selections to choose from! We had a delightful appetizer followed by delicious entrees. Dessert was yummy as well. We were able to sit outside on the patio with a lovely view of the garden. The weather was perfect and we were happy to be outside. Our server was excellent, took great care of us, and kept the refreshing tropical iced tea glasses full It's great when you can visit the museum and see three interesting exhibits and pair it with a relaxing and delicious lunch. We look forward to the next visit!"

"Everyone from hostess to reservation receptionist, to beverage server, the waiter, and all support staff were, happy, gracious, very accommodating, and made our visit a wonderful experience. "We went to Tangata because we were going to see an exhibit at Bowers Museum, of which it is a part. We dined on the patio and that was lovely. I had eaten there twice before and was very impressed. However, this time, my husband and I shared and panzanella salad, which was mediocre, and the lamb entree. The lamb was not very tender and had some grizzle. For dessert, we share the mango sorbet, which was outstanding. The staff was very accommodating, friendly and professional. I think we just hit an off day because, as I said, the prior two visits were very impressive. I would still recommend Tangata to anyone going to the museum."

"Wait staff was very professional and yet personal and friendly, they were able to adjust offerings for food allergies, the room was immaculate and the patio was warm on a chilly day. The food selection while limited covered all the variations that we like to see offered - everything to a wonderful burger to crisp salads and tasty entrees. I would not take small children here, the ambiance was great for refueling after wandering through the exhibits at the Bower Museum."
