In June of 2005 Humberto and Lorena opened the doors to Lorena's, a 9 table restaurant in the heart of Maplewood Village. As an alumnus of the C.I.A. and a graduate from New Jersey's top kitchens, Chef Campos will be offering a French based menu inspired by the seasons.
"We were greeted with a warm smile as we entered this little gem of a restaurant in lovely downtown Maplewood. We were shown to our nice table, and we were wished a happy anniversary (which they remembered from my internet reservation). From the moment we arrived through the time we left, we were given excellent, cheerful service and wonderful food, including a complimentary dessert in honor of our anniversary! Wonderful experience! Will definitely return!"

"Waitstaff was outstanding , i highly recommend the halibut. It was cooked to perfection . Great little place with only 10 tables so you were attended to . Great spot if you're going to Prudential Center 61/2 miles away. Definetly would go back if I was in the area."

"I needed a quiet table (requested on my Open Table reservation) for 4 - turned out only 3 could make it. We were given a table In the middle of the dining room. I appreciate that we were late due to traffic, but a 4 top table in a quieter spot was paying their bill and I asked to be moved when the party left. I was told that the table was "for smaller party" meaning if we moved, they couldn't seat a party of 2 at the table. However, a party of 3 showed up and they were given the table in the quieter spot. They were gracious trying to explain, but when you request a quiet table (guest is hearing impaired) and there was an opportunity to make it possible, it was ignored. There were many tables that could have accommodated my request."

"From the moment you enter this small, intimate and warmly decorated restaurant, you're made to feel welcomed and special. Service is always excellent. We consider Lorena's one of the best, if not the best, restaurants in New Jersey and have been dining here since the first year Chef Umberto opened his restuarant. Perfection this past Saturday was the burata appetizer, skate entree and coffee panna cotta dessert. OMG - it could not have been any better."

"Very good food -- veal chops, skate wing, chicken. Nice dessert. Small restaurant, consequently not too noisy. Brought white wine which was not kept at table and often had to wait to get waiter to refill our glasses."

"Hostess was very welcoming, and the waiters friendly and professional. Excellent service! Appetizers were very nice, but less exciting than the descriptions. Main courses cooked to perfection...but not very interesting. Portions were beautifully presented, but small, and the accompanying dishes much too small. The desserts were very good, except for the berries and cream. The berries were neither ripe nor tasty, and there was too little of the nice cream. This dish should have been sent back. A few more main dishes that are meat would have been welcome--the available meat selection was skimpy. To sum up, a very nice dining experience, but at these prices it should have more interesting, more delicious."

"Humberto is the best chef in New Jersey. The food at Lorena's is always interesting, perfectly prepared and really at a level seen in very few other restaurants."

"Dinner was amazing. Their salmon tartare, a signature dish, is truly out of this world. The amuse bouche, a lentil soup, was similarly amazing. Everything was fantastic. And it's quite a pleasant place.
That said, is it worth paying three times as much as other amazing restaurants? Heck, if you like to spend a lot of money, great, it's really fun. But I have eaten at other places almost equally amazing for a good deal less -- including lots of wine.
Wait staff was very good, certainly -- but not out of this world. And lack of wine certainly diminishes the experience.
So, you know, if you have the money to burn, this is a great place to do it, but if you want your money's worth . . . maybe not."

"Sunday brunch... excellent... Beween my wife and I, we tried most of the menu... everything perfect or near perfect.. salt/sweet balance was perfect; apricot bread pudding dessert was divine; braised beef was like a carnivore party in my mouth with herbs delicately infused therein; cream leek soup was incredible (and notably I never enjoyed any cream-based soup before); memorable food and honorable mention to waiter Glenn... everything came to our table at perfect temperature and timing."

"The food and service at this restaurant are excellent. It is an outstanding restaurant, very small and intimate. However very expensive so I would save this place for special occasions when "price is no matter". We loved it"

"Lorena's is the most consistently excellent restaurant in northern suburban New Jersey. The service is alway nearly perfect, as is the atmosphere, tucked away in Maplewood Village. The food is consistently excellent as well. I have been to Lorena's a number of times and the only reason I didn't give it an outstanding this time is because I am spoiled there and Lorena's was out the dish I really wanted. Settling for a perfectly cooked, filet for second place, wasn't so bad, though."

"Always one of the best meals you can wish for. First class service in a very elegant intimate space. Every detail is taken care of. Pure perfection in every aspect. Some of the best fish courses you can find anywhere. Save room for the deserts made in house. They will blow your mind."

"Lorena's is our go to place for a great French dinner. It's BYOB so we bring our best French wines. Not inexpensive but BYOB brings the price down. Try the Skate wing, awesome. So us the Duck, the Short Ribs, the Salmon. The soups are regularly awesome, too. We usually pass on dessert but if you have room, they're great, too."

"As usual, the food was outstanding. Beautifully prepared and unhurried making one feel welcome and almost like a special guest in someone's home where nothing is too much trouble. The service is always friendly, yet unobtrusive. The restaurant is indeed fortunate to have someone like Adrian as Maitre D' both attending to tables personally and having the help of his excellent staff. Bravo.A birthday dinner to remember."

"First I have to say that every course was delicious. We split the salad with duck confit. The dressing was light, not overpowering, and really, really nice. The waiter recommended the skate for an entree and it was all that he said it was - very good. We shared a dessert and while I am not a bread pudding fan, I went with my companion's choice which we shared. Another winner."

"Delightful, bespoke food and plating. Top notch ingredients, willing to swap out garnishes etc if requested. The chef is more than willing to consider special requests if you make them a day ahead and the ingredients can be obtained.
Lorena's is one small step down from having your own personal chef. Small dining room, comfortable seats, attentive staff, highly respectful of wines brought to the restaurant. Even when the restaurant is full, the noise level is quite manageable and doesn't affect conversations.
Two specials, each recited with prices"

"This was our first visit, and it won't be our last. Everything was terrific including the Skate wing which two of us had for our entres. Our wine was handled well by the server. That is important when you have brought a vintage Bordeaux that needs decanting."

"Lorena's offers simply outstanding food and service. The menu changes seasonally every couple of months. There are a handful of staples, like their incredible salmon tartar, but most of the menu reflects changes in what can be locally harvested. The attention to each and every detail is superb. It's a BYO restaurant, so make sure you bring an exceptional bottle to pair with their exquisite food."

"Our fifth or sixth trip, Humberto Campos is a genius. I would lick every plate clean if I could, and snitch from other tables whilst they weren't looking. I doubt anything could be improved, saving the tile ceiling. We were so impressed with the amuse-bouche my wife asked if we could take some home - we're picking it up tonight!!!"

"I had heard so many wonderful things about Lorena's before I had gone, and everything that was said is true. The ricotta cavatelli and orgainic chicken as an appetizer is a must. My friends could not believe I ate every last morsel of my entree which was skate. Save room for the orange and cherry bread pudding. Cannot wait to return."

"Lorena's was fantastic! The food was delicious and the servings were perfect, not too small and not too big. The service was wonderful. Because the restaurant is so small the menu only has a few appetizers and main courses but all sounded so good it was hard to choose. It's BYOB and a place I would definitely go back to."

"I don't see how this place is still in existence. To start with I had a green salad which had to go back because the dressing was so sharp that I began choking. The venison although the meat was tender, it had far too much pepper. Prices on quite high for food like this. The mushroom soup was full of cream, not tasty and not hot. We won't be returning."

"We absolutely love this restaurant! It was our 4th time back, but first time with a pre fix menu for Valentines Day, and it was fabulous!! The butternut squash soup is the best we've ever had. The staff there is so nice, pleasant and extremely attentive. The food is fantastic!! I feel like we're eating somewhere in NYC. Can't wait to go back!!"
