"Cheval Bistro is a consistently good choice for dining. Although we had a longer wait than usual to get our food because one of the souffles we ordered "fell," the manager came to our table to explain what happened and to apologize. It was not a problem because we were not on a schedule. If we had been, we could've ordered something different that didn't require 25-30 minutes to prepare. However, our server, Paul, was excellent (he's been our server every time we've gone there) and he is professional, courteous, and friendly--just the kind of person you want to wait on you. The salmon Eggs Benedict were excellent (though they could've been a little hotter) and the lobster/shrimp souffle delicious."

"The food takes a long time to come out. Went for mother's day brunch. The table next us had toast, but it was burnt. I had the crepe, it was good, but the crepe was a bit burnt as well. Definitely try the oyster! Saw the ad on Open Table for mother's day, so I was expecting a mother's day menu, but don't think they have one."

"This was the third time I have been to Cheval Bistro and I was actually pretty disappointed, my previous experience there were both outstanding.......my steak came out over cooked but the manager did get me a new one but we have ordered a chocolate soufflé and it was out before I was even half way done with my steak, most of the time I could not find our server and I had to flag down the manager or have someone else go get her."

"We started with gougeres, cheese puffs, which were too large and only seemed to be dusted with cheese. We ordered a bottle on Sancerre, and when we got the check, the price was higher than we thought. The waiter brought the menu back and showed us the listing; however, there was another bottle of Sancerre listed in a different part of the menu, and that was what we ordered, but he brought the higher priced bottle. The food was just OK; not a memorable meal."

"The service was excellent. They have very attentive wait staff. Kristi our waitress was friendly and helpful. Portions of food are larger than average for a French restaurant. Food was not 100% authentic. Quality was good, but not outstanding. We had the boeuf Bourguingnon and duck confit. A bit on the salty side. Duck was somewhat dry, beef was not as complex as it should have been. Onion soup was a little light on flavor. Escargot good but not amazing. Oddly, they were out of ratatouille on a Saturday evening, even tho it was early."

"We celebrated a birthday with a group of 8 people. We had excellent service, the food was great, and the cost was moderate. The lobster salad had a half of lobster for $19.00 and it was excellent. Not very crowded, but I don't know why. They are open for evenings and Sunday brunch. Definitely worth a return trip."

And mostly surprised that most people (except ourselves) was a dressed a bit more than most California restaurants, maybe the French in it? We will try this place 3 times before we Yelp to be very accurate..."

"We had a second outstanding evening from the drink at the bar with the friendly bartender to dinner with an outstanding waiter (ask for Nedal). We shared the mussels and escargot (wonderful). I had the rack of lamb special. One friend had the coco van and the other had the trout. We've already decided that we'll go back for our next play--and can hardly wait to try other things on the menu."

"The site, the service, the ambiance were all excellent. The wine list was small but had some notable wines wines at reasonable prices-- we had an Gewurtztramier and a Melville Syrah from the Santa Rita Hills. There are choices for every wallet.
However, the food was not up to what it should be: my Boullabaise had excellent broth and remoulade but 4 or 5 each of shrimp and mussels and a tiny bit of fish, not exactly rich with ingredients. The classic floating island's sauce was thin, watery. My wife's mussels were in a quite bland sauce. The hanger steak was pronounced "fine", as was the dessert souffle and the tart tartin.
All in all, a quite good meal, leisurely (2 1/2 hours). Preparation needs improvement. Valet parking."

"Even though they had my husband's food order wrong, which made us wait a little longer than we would have liked (the timing on the wrong order was perfect) they went above and beyond to make it right. My only reservation is that the waitress seemed to avoid us after the mistake and we had to keep pouring our decanted wine for ourselves, but once she realized we were not going to go off on her, she stepped back up. The food is very tasty bistro style food."

"We were welcomed warmly, and, as I had requested, they had a table for 8 in a side room, very much an improvement upon the noise in the main room. The waitress took orders in a timely fashion, but we were not served our food for more than one hour after we had all arrived. There was never an explanation, until I got up from the table and asked, and even then they could not explain what went wrong. As a result, our drinks bill was higher than our food bill (this was a brunch). The waitress was always standing at the ready to ask for drink orders, and one had the impression that this was a ploy to get us to drink more."

"We were excited to try this place! One of the Smith Brothers group. When we arrived, our table was ready, however, our server took way to long to acknowledge us. We sat there for approx 20 mins before our server came by and asked us if we wanted anything to drink. Then another 15 mins before our drinks came - our server did not return for another 20-30 mins before he took our food order. We were pretty hungry. We were afraid to ask questions because we thought our server will never come back. When our order was taken, our server did not write down the correct items and missed a few. I can understand being busy, but as we watched our server he was busy talking to people for 10 or more minutes - it was very frustrating."

"We had dinner here twice when it first opened and we weren't impressed enough to come back. I had lunch with my friends and same thing. Then I heard they got a new chef and things were much better. When our daughter chose to go there for brunch, we thought let's give it a try. The restaurant was fairly empty subtracting from the ambience. We ordered the bread basket filled with the sorts of breads that are usually complimentary. The beet salad ordered before our eggs and crepe dishes arrived the same time. Beet salad doesn't taste the same, side by side with a breakfast dish. Food was just okay. The gratin potatoes get an A+. This seems to be the Smith Bros. stepchild of all their restaurants. Sorry, but we won't go back."

"the food quality has deteriorated since our last wonderful visit one year ago, of 3 filets only one was cooked correctly, mussles cream sauce was bland, when we complained about the meat, the waitress indicated ongoing problems with the kitchen, will never return, very dissapointing. the wine sommellier a very experienced older gentleman is no longer there and was very much missed, food was only average and not worth the price."

"This is a great place, it was our second visit and the food quality is consistant and excellent. All of the old standard French dishes are nicely prepared and presented. The kitchen is a little slow but it is worth the wait. We will definitely be back.

"Bistro usually implys noisy, possibly cold and uncomfortable but - maybe - good food. So since there is a real dirth of genuine French food out there, my Husband had a hankering for it, the menu on line looked promising, and it was his birthday we gave it a try.
First, this is not what I consider a "bistro". It is a very pleasant quiet and a traditional full fledged Restaurant with a capitol R.
Service was lovely, the food was very good, the wines interesting, we had a nicely though unexpected good time.
Special fave - If you like tartar try theirs."

"I took my husband there for his birthday and let the staff know ahead of time. When we arrived, there was a birthday card addressed to him sitting on our table and a cream puff with a candle for dessert. Beautiful presentation with "Happy Birthday" written on the plate in chocolate. Very memorable evening--would highly recommend it for the food, ambience, and service."

"Very nice French restaurant. We have enjoyed many of the Smith Brothers. Restaurants. The entrees are pricey, but the food and service were very good. I had the mussels which is offered as an hors d'oeuvre but was sufficient for an entree. My husband had the special pork chop which he liked very much. We will definitely go again."

"It's really difficult to say, as despite making reservations 2 weeks ahead, we were stuck in the saloon portion which was not at all what I was looking for when I made reservation."

"Over priced we thought. Food was fine, not fabulous . Service was good, but we were very unhappy with our table location and asked to be moved. The hostess Melissa told us that was "our" table and it was pre-selected. We watched them move two other couples who didn't like their table either, and give a tird couple a choice between two tables. This did not sit good with us, and we felt unimportant. Not impresses."

"Food was well above average. Prices are on the high side. But service was very slow. Either the kitchen didn't have its act together or our server was off in another world. We saw very little of her, while other servers seemed to be around a lot. I ordered striped seabass (although it looked to be more like trout). Small serving but very tasty. My wife ordered a filet in pepper sauce. Very good. The cheese puff appetizers were excellent. For a Smith's Bros. restaurant, doesn't compare to Parkway Grill or Arroyo Chop House. Will give them another try someday, hoping to get better service, but won't hurry back anytime soon."

"The food was excellent. The duck was the best I have ever had and everything was cooked to perfection. However, the evening was ruined due to poor service. Our server rarely came by and when he did he would throw down our food and run off again without asking how we were doing. He wouldn't even fill our water glasses completely and ignored us when we asked for more. It was very disappointing considering the table next to us had a different server and excellent service."

"Ambiance and service (both at the bar and at the table) were excellent. We shared the mussels which were served in a cream sauce and were probably the best we had every had. We had the cassoulet which was a disappointment. The pork belly was way too smokey and salty. Sausage was whole as was the duck. The warm brownie with ice cream was a wonderful ending. Wine list was extentive and had reasonable wines. Will be returning as there is much on the menu left to try."
