With the successful move of Tocqueville, owners Marco Moreira and Jo-Ann Makovitzky set about re-inventing the restaurant's original space with the help of acclaimed architect Richard Bloch. Reborn as 15 East, the restaurant serves contemporary Japanese cuisine and traditional sushi in an elegant, comfortable setting. Online reservations are for the dining room only. For reservations at the sushi bar please call the restaurant directly.
"While portions are smaller than one might expect elsewhere, the food is first rate. While the kitchen preparations are interesting and inventive (although the abalone risotto was somewhat nondescript), the sushi remains the high point of this restaurant."

"The restaurant was very accommodating. Every request was met quickly and without a questions whether it was for more wasabi or the miso soup which didn't apear on the menu. There was a bit of a wait between plates from the kitchen and sushi bar. The chef did come out to speak to people he knew at the table next to us, and then came to our table to make sure everything was satisfactory. Only complaint is that there wasn't an even flow of courses...everything from the kitchen came then a long wait then all of the sushi. Nitpicking just to try and find a complaint though. Phenomenal meal over all"

"We are sushi fanatics and 15 East exceeded our expectations in several ways: 1) Great service!; 2) Fantastic sushi and sashimi; 3) a warm and friendly environment. We started with a "degustation of sea lettuces" as something unique and different. We were served 7 or 8 different varieties of sea lettuce, each unique and different, and all complex and flavorful. The 2nd course was the grilled gindara (koji sake marinated black cod in uni sauce) which was amazing! Course 3 was the sushi omakase (chef's selection of 10 pieces of sushi) and blew our minds! We thought we had good sushi before, but this set a new standard! We finished with seared sea scallops with squid ink risotto, spinach & shiitake, sea urchin butter. What a finish!"

"Honestly I'm not so sure what all the hype surrounding this place is. It's definitely cool to see celebrities but it's NYC...get used to it. I did the sushi omakase and got extra rolls and tried sashimi and also ate a couple of appetizers that are different but I don't think this restaurant is deserving of a Michelin star. It's a great sushi spot but not that good, NYC has plenty of other places that are just as good if not better and which are cheaper as well."

"Terrific restaurant, understandably earns it's Michelin rating. Impeccable service with thoughtful and balanced comments and recommedations on everything from Sake to entree choices. Server was asked about choosing between two different entrees and instead offered to create half-portions of both. Beyond expectation. Presentations were terrific, sushi spectacular and entrees were very good. A bit pricey for portion size (NYC) but quality and originality were spot on."

"We ordered the sushi and sashimi omakase and we were somewhat disappointed with the quality of the sashimi. It didn't taste as fresh as sushi places we've been to in California. The blue crab appetizer was just ok. The softshell cran was pretty good. We also ordered the duck and it was pretty boring. Overall, we were not very impressed. We miss all the great sushi places in California."

"I ordered from the kitchen menu, not omakase. You will get the sorts of portions you would expect in a restaurant of this caliber. I have nothing bad to say about the food. Everything was cooked with the sort of care and attention to flavors you would expect. It was not very texturally diverse, which I usually enjoy in Japanese food, but still - all delicious.
The service made me a little uneasy. The restaurant is small and all of the waitstaff are a little too eager to wait on you. They never made me feel rushed, but antsy definitely.
The sommelier was spot on with his recommendations. I had a great Japanese whisky."

"We enjoyed perfect sashimi, wonderful homemade tofu, and the most delicious octopus I have ever eaten. 15 East also has an amazing collection of Japanese beers and sakes. Mmmmm."

"The best sushi and sashimi we have ever had (and we've had quite a bit). Service is more cool and professional than warmly welcoming, but not a spoiler."

"I'll be honest, I don't really like Japanese food. My wife does. So you shouldn't really pay attention to Food-score I gave. The setting is very nice, the staff is really helpful, they have an impressive list of Sake. But to me personally it was nevertheless way too much money for what it really was. And I'm afraid that my wife wasn't very impressed by the sushi either."

"My food experience here was one of the best I've had in the last couple years. Definitely some spectacular tastes and textures going on here. My group of four had the tasting menu, which was extremely special and unique. We also had an excellent bottle of sake to go with our meal. I would suggest the tasting menu to anyone who chooses to dine here. Though it's pricey, it is worth the experience. I would love to come back here more often, but would have to limit myself to once or twice a year (likely for special occassions only) due to personal budget restrictions."

"15 East continues to impress me as each time I go there I find another dish that is best in class. Most recently it was a special dessert (the apple tart) which was one of the most amazing ever! Worth the high prices!"

"I'm not a foodie and was only at 15 East to see if it would be suitable to take a large group of Japanese businessmen for a special dinner. I was expecting a whole lot more from a Michelin rated, highly praised restaurant, but came away indifferent. My Japanese work colleagues share my view. Mind you, it was for Friday lunch so maybe it is better in the evening. Not to be a sushi snob, but I rather doubt 15 East would register as a top sushi venue in Tokyo."
