"We enjoyed a wonderful meal on a busy Friday evening. The service was impeccable and every morsel of food was delicious. Our cocktails were spot on and the bottle of Sancerre excellent. The amuse bouches delivered to our table by seasoned servers were excellent (the duck pastrami was my favorite, with the crab running a close second). I started with shrimp served over a pea puree and had perfectly cooked tenderloin for my entree. Both were filled with amazing flavors. My dessert (chocolate espresso crémeux with vanilla sunchoke ice cream) was quite good, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the first 2 courses. The macaroon that was handed to us when we left was incredible, however. In short, the food, service and ambiance were perfect."

"We went to L'Espalier for a birthday dinner, and were blown away by both the food and the service.
My dining companion is lactose-intolerant, and everything was served in accordance, without asking - right down to the bread service and the amuse-bouche. We started with oysters - served perfectly, with no grit or briny taste. The foie gras was tender and flavorful, and the scallops perfectly seared. For our main course, the duck was worth every penny. Dessert - the bananas foster - was another knockout.
The service was attentive and prompt, but never overbearing and rushed, the noise level was perfect for conversation, and the view looking out over Back Bay was beautiful.
All in all, as close to the perfect dining experience as it gets."

"I had hoped to find a fine dining, haute cuisine restaurant in Boston that lived up to the hype. While very good, & a step above the rest, this restaurant is grossly overpriced for both the cuisine & service. If this meal cost $250, my review would be glowing & I'd be willing to overlook a lot, but it cost more than twice that - $530 w/ tip! If you have a special occasion, go elsewhere, you & your wallet will thank me."

"i had booked dinner here on the advice of local friends during a brief trip to boston, and, as luck would have it, was offered the chance of being at the chef's table on the day of our reservation. it's VERY pricey, but, if you're celebrating a special night it's an absolutely fantastic experience. we were taken through the kitchen to a worktable set in the back (in actual use when patrons aren't eating at it) and had our own server for the evening. the service was absolutely impeccable, we had all the time in the world to sit back, watch the frenetic activity in the kitchen ("yes, chef!" "two fois gras for table 2!" "where's my turbot?"...it was like being in an episode of top chef!), and digest 13 incredible courses."

"My only surprise was the total amount of food in the Pris Fixe menu. In the past, I had found the Menu Degustation a little more food than I wanted, so I cut back to the 3 course menu. The portions were excellent, but add in several amuse bouche (including a really tasty crab salad), a couple of changes of wine, and some very good bread, and it still resulted in feeling pretty stuffed. Not that I'm complaining, mind you..."

"We had the Spring Degustation menu consisting of four courses, chosen by the chef, for $110/pp. We don't usually do wine pairings, preferring to order a bottle of our choice, but we went for it for $65/pp, and were glad that we did. Lovely wines that made each course unique and special. The service was excellent and not at all overbearing. The food was delicious. The portions are small but there are six of them including the cheese tray and a very small dessert, so it's OK to enjoy one or two of the delicious pretzel rolls along the way.The dining room is low key and elegant. Wonderful evening."

"The plan was for my family and I to celebrate my last running of the Boston Marathon at L'Espalier Monday evening. When I received an email from Open Table asking me to review our dinner I was a bit stunned. Figured I'd just use the opportunity to let the fine folks at L'Espalier know that the Chase family's thoughts are with them during this time."

"As usual, L'Espalier was excellent- the service was impeccable and the food was beautifully presented. I asked for substitution and more information about the dishes than usual because I have recently been there; the restraunt was very accomodating and delightful in making my experience the best. "I have been dining at L'Espalier for well over twenty years and have seen noting but improvement over time. The service is attentive yet not obtrusive. The food is well-presented and delicious. The wine selection was excellent. Although we were the last party in the restaurant we never felt pressured. Thanks for another very special occasion!"

"As usual, L'Espalier did not disappoint with its Easter brunch. The food, while subtlely flavored, was delicious, fresh, and creatively prepared. The choices represented a good range of options. And the service was attentive, without eing pretentious."

"Took my wife her for her 50th birthday. We had previously been to the old location. Old location had a certain intimacy I definitely miss, but the new location and decor is top notch. Food was outstanding. Front desk was outstanding. An hour before arriving I called to change our reservations and add my daughters, and they happily extended. Staff in the restaurant were perfect. Had the degustation menu, and the chef sent out lots of extras. Extras were a mixed bag for our table. Some (corn brittle, cauliflower panticota, gouda eclair) were heavenly. Some others less so. Actual menu was outstanding, with the fois gras and lamb being true standouts. We also had the oysters with champagne / cavier, and those were outstanding."

"L'Espalier has been one of my favorite go to restaurants for years. When asked for a recommendation its always been on my list. I chose it for a special girls lunch this week- we both always loved the food and service. Obviously I have no ojection to paying for an expensive meal but the food and portions need to be equal to price. Really? Two small pieces of lobster claw, half a portabello mushroom and a coddled egg on top of black bean lentils for $25.00! To us that was an appetizer not entree size portion and we are not big portion people. The dessert trio was equally disappointing. Sorry L'Espalier but both my luncheon companion and I said at the end of the meal that we were never coming back. A very disappointed fan and customer."

"First and foremost the food is very good. Our family of 5 all ordered the "set" lunch menu and the restaurant was very accommodating accepting sensible substitutions for various courses. All of the courses were excellent particularly the lobster bisque and the beef and fish main courses. Service could be sharpened up some. The set lunch did take more than 2.5 hours which was fine for us but might be considered in making this choice. Overall a great experience."

"Frankly, I was disappointed by the service which has always been excellent on any other occasion I have visited your establishment. Specifically, I had to seek out a random wait staff person to ask that they ask our waiter to bring the wine to accompany the first course that had already been served. To be clear, the wine was ordered when we ordered our food and therefore, I expected for it to be served when our first course arrived. Apparently, the wine that we ordered was not in stock and we substituted a different wine as a result. I have always had an exceptional experience whenever I spend time in your restaurant and was disappointed that things were not up to your usual impeccable standard."

"This was a visit for the full tea. It was a great show, including watching a special rolled tea ball develop into flowers in a goblet of steamimg water. I had been at L'espalier the previous evening for the degustation menu and had been unhappy about the service. Therefore when I returned for tea the management was more attentive to giving me good service."

"This is an expensive restaurant that is worth it for a special occasion or any time if you can afford it, because they serve food with a presentation you can find nowhere else in Boston. It is without a doubt, the best restaurant I have been to."

"The food was magnificent; however, I got the single diner treatment: not worth giving me timely attention. I had the degustation (tasting) menu. In my view each new course should soon follow the previous one. Not for me. Other diners who arrived after me were well ahead of me in service. There were up to 15 minute pauses between courses. Finally, after more than two hours and the last course of six finally arriving, I asked for the check, paid a minimal gratuity and left. The restaurant needs better management. In spite of the excellent food it was not a pleasing experience."

"We dined here about 4 years ago and loved it, so were looking forward to this as a real treat on our visit to Boston. Unfortunately "uneven" is probably the best thing we can say. While the Long Island Duck was quite good, the smoked Salmon was very salty to the point where no other seasoning was recognizable. The scallop appetizer tasted "fishy" in a way scallops shouldn't. The desserts (bread pudding, banana's foster) were "overthought" but unfortuanately not overly tasty. The chocolate souffle was "ok."
Service was great and they gave us a discount as we expressed dissappointment...but we won't be back."

"Service very friendly - permitted a prix fixe and a degustation at same table, provided tastes of beverages. Some superb items, including lamb (the "cassoulet" is a deconstructed version with first class cuts of lamb and beans on the side) and delightful desserts (the so-called bread pudding is fantastic). Overall an excellent evening."

"My wife and I celebrated our anniversary. The food was completely exotic, original and creative, not to mention delicious. The portions were modern - read small. There were multiple small tasty treats served before the meal, along with delicious breads. This is a very expensive restaurant, but the food is unusual and extraordinary. The wine list runs from some of the least expensive bottles I have ever seen not in a box, to some of the most expensive I have ever found on a wine list. As a collector, I found a tremendous variation in the multiples of store prices. The by the glass list is excellent. If you are very wealthy or want a special night this is the place. Save a little room for the small desserts."
