"My dad chose St. Elmo to celebrate Father's Day. The food was terrific. Steaks were cooked perfect. Baked potatoes rocked. And the shrimp cocktail...need I say more. Dad was extremely happy and full and so was his family."

"The food was good. They aren't kidding about the shrimp cocktail being spicy. The best part is the atmosphere. It's a crazy old establishment with a great history. The servers wear bow ties and know all about it. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

"on Satuurday went to St Elmos with a party of 7. Took close to 2 hours for our dinner , but the resturand bought each member of the party a round of drinks. Steak was excellent. the group enjoyed their selves. Thank you"

"I just love St. Elmo's and always include dinner there when I'm in or through Indianapolis. Last week just wasn't up to par. Our waitress was outstanding! We couldn't have asked for better or more attentive. My steak, however, was not good, especially since our food is normally as good as the service. This was an off-menu special, dry aged filet. it was dry all right, especially on the outsides. I cut through the middle and found a ribbon of gristle running throughout. I cut and sliced around until i had eaten about half and gave up. My dining partner's steak, the same cut, looked great and he didn't complain. I didn't complain either. I'm sure I'll be back as I'm in Indianapolis again in July. I'll order Prime next time."

"This is an old-school steakhouse with delicious meats and tomato juice as a starter. The shrimp cocktail was as good as described, w/ real horseradish cocktail sauce. The creme brulee was great, too. Service was very friendly. The dining room was quite dark, making it difficult to read the menu. Unfortunately, everything was very overpriced."

"Living in Indiana all my life, I know the historical value of St. Elmo's. This was my first trip & it lived up to its billing. My wife & I went here for our wedding anniversary dinner & it was great!
Everything is top-notch, from the first welcome at the door to the service at the table to the food & its preparation.
I would say the only negative (but easy to get over, as it was a preconceived notion) was that the restaurant was really loud once we sat at our table. Not hard to get over once you're used to it, but we imagined a quieter setting.
That being said, our evening was great & couldn't have been happier with our experience at this historical Indy hot spot!"

"For our first anniversary, we chose to spend it with St. Elmo's. It is our favorite restaurant, so where else would we go? When we were seated, they set out a card that said Happy Anniversary. This was cute. Our service was exceptional--everything came with great timing and we never felt rushed or that it was going too slow. Then they gave us a complimentary dessert for our anniversary which was so nice! We really appreciate the great service for our anniversary and we cannot wait to come back!"

"We have dinner here to travel back to the fifties when SSSSteaks were tremendous and people thought that Shrimp cocktail was something special. Very consistent dining experience, including the feeling that the wait staff is more invested in turning over tables than providing a full dining experience. They don't rush you after you order but boy do they want you to order soon after arrival. In the end we had plenty of time to be with each other and enjoy the great steaks. Pricey but worth the investment if you like steak."

"The food was fantastic and our waiter, Mark, was personable and attentive. The noise level was very high, not due to patrons but due to the constant sound of dishes being dumped, dropped, or broken "behind the scenes," constantly startling everyone. The constant clatter of dishes definietly detracted from the ambiance."

"My husband and I went to St. Elmo's for our 24th anniversary. This was the first time in 24 years that he said dinner was "perfect"! He's pretty hard to please when it comes to dinning out so I was amazed! We both had filet mignon and I can't begin to describe how wonderful it was. Our server, Dave, was OUTSTANDING. We didn't feel rushed or pressured and the ambience was so classic. We don't really treat ourselves to this kind of restaurant very often so it was very special and definitely worth it!"

"We have been to St. Elmos's a few times before and always had good experiences. This time the food was great, but the location of our table was terrible. We made reservations well in advance through Open Table. That went smoothly. We arrived early and were seated right away. Our table was in a corner with the server's station literally 1 1/2 feet behind us. Servers were constantly coming over for bread plates and cutlery/napkins. Since we were seated so close, the servers had to either squeeze in behind us or reach over us. I understand the more people you seat and serve, the more money you make, but come on St. Elmo's--you are an upper scale restaurant. We expected a great table location at which to celebrate our 25th anniversary!"

"First there is the the ambiance. The owners, in coordination with the city, have done an excellent job maintaining the history of this former speak-easy. Then there is the staff. All of them are exemplary professionals. Dressed to the nines, and highly qualified. Finally the food. Its easy to over indulge, when its this good. While famous for their steaks and home-made cocktail sauce, all of their entreesare superb. Probably the best meal experience, I've had in Indianapolis."

"When I have guest from out of town that have not been to St Elmo's I like to in spite of the overpricing like to take them there for a steak. We had the worst service I have ever experienced on our visit there this past Friday night. We waited 20 minutes for our reserved table. We waited another five minutes after arriving at our table for drinks or even water. We enjoyed the shrimp cocktail, and ordered our steaks. Two of the 4 steaks were overcooked after we waited again for about 30 minutes to get them. The meal ended with one person getting dessert, one person asked for coffee none was offered and another guest also had to ask.

"Loved it. Had the specials being the prawn "hot sauce" cocktail - full of hot, hot horseradish - but real good quality prawns. The steak was done perfectly as was the lobster tail. Paying for quality, but all there and more. Good buzz in the restaraunt and Geore our waiter was great company as well as a great server!
Wife and I loved and recommend it!!!"

"I'm not a fan of prime rib finished off on the grill. So I don't know why I ordered it, but I did. The side of horseradish sauce wasn't what I was expecting, too mayonaisy. Not enough horseradish, so I asked for some more to mix in, still didn't work. The meat had little flavor but was indeed a nice cut of meat. Will probably order the ribeye next time."

"After our first ever visit to St. Elmo's Restaurant, my wife and I now know what everyone is talking about; classic charm meets old-style elegance. The restrurant was packed, yet it was easy to have a conversation. The service was excellent--not rushed--just right. And the food was as expected--fabulous! When I made our reservation I let them know that my wife and I would be celebrating our anniversary. When we arrived the hostess wished us "happy anniversary," as did a second hostess and our waiter. As we finished our meal they brought us a special dessert to celebrate. Very special and much appreciated. One word of caution, always make a reservation. As we left there were many people waiting for a table, and this was Wednesday night."

"We finally went for our 30 th Anniversary! The food was excellent but it is very expensive so can't see going unless its a special occasion. The waiter was very nice & he even surprised us with a Creme Brule with a candle in it for our special night! The steaks were delicious. My husband lived the shrimp cocktail but I'm not a big fan of horse radish so it wasn't really my cup of tea."

"Here you will find overpriced plates and standard (if not poor) quality cooking. It seems that steaks are first cooked (maybe defrost) in microwave and then cooked on grill; appetizers are almost forced into the Shrimp cocktail (signature), a 6 jumbo shrimps with Wasabi sauce on the top (?). I was not warned about that and I almost die in the first intent since I was not expecting such variation, priced about 50-60% higher than same plate in other restaurants. Desserts are poorly made. If the intention is having options for those who prefer unsweet desserts, they should specify that in the menu. A total disappointment. You will enjoy the environment, however. Nice ambient from first half of 20 century. The bill will surprise you."

The Shrimp Cocktail alone is worth the trip, it is hot and yummy at the same time. The steaks are very well seasoned.
The service is impeccable, quick to meet your dining needs and yet you feel like you can take your time enjoying your meal.
Fairly high priced meals, but worth every penny. We visit for special occasions, have been there for 3 or 4 anniversaries, birthday, and graduation celebrations.

"Our waiter acted like he was doing us a favor by waiting on us. I wanted to request another waiter but my wife said "maybe he will warm up. "The place is so noisy it is impossible to carry on a conversation. If I am paying that much for a piece of meat, I don't want to be around a bunch of slobs with flip-flops, baggy shorts and tee-shirts. And what is with all the kids and a crying baby? We are accustomed to a steakhouse where Ladies and Gentlemen dine. Not a McDonalds with waiters.."

"Decided to stay overnight in Indy downtown and wanted popular eatery for dinner. I decided upon St. Elmo. The Sunday fare meal was well priced and very good. I had the house salad, filet -medium and creme brûlée. Each course, met or exceeded my expectations. The environment is comfortable and nicely deco red. The service was attentive but not disruptive. I would definitely eat here again and I recommend it to others looking for a reliable and good restaurant."
