"This is our favourite restaurant and we try to go two or three times a year and our latest visit was another very good experience. Our waitress - Jodi - was exceptional and paid close attention to my wife's allergies, which allowed her to relax into the evening. I want to say a special "Thank You" to Jodi; that level of care and consideration is priceless!!! Our food was hot and prepared to the excellent standards we have come to value and appreciate at the Blackshop."

"I was looking forward to my dinner with friends and I must say that 2 of us were very disappointed in the food. The steaks while cooked to the right degree (medium - lightly pink)were chewy. I ordered calamari for an appetizer and couldn't finish them as they were terribly rubbery. This is not what I expected when I spend about $150 per couple for an evening out."

"This restaurant is beautiful, the service was great, but my food was just ok. I suppose it was my fault as I didn't realize that veal scallopini is deep fried. It tasted of oil. My husbands meal was better than mine but he still did not love it. Drinks were wonderful, our appetizer was delicious, and the dessert list looked amazing though we did not get anything. It was a nice night out but I wish the mains would have been better."

"I ordered the salmon crostini as an appetizer followed by their pepper steak for my entree. The salmon crostini, while enjoyable, had a very mild smoked salmon flavor, whereas I personally enjoy a bit stronger flavor. Unfortunately, my biggest disappointment was the entree. I have ordered many varieties of peppered steaks in my time, and was surprised to find their pepper steak was completely encrusted on both the top and bottom. This covered up the taste of the steak entirely rather than enhanced its flavor, it was almost like rafting fork fulls of pepper. I was also surprised at how thinly cut their steak was, making it almost impossible for them to cook it rare as requesred, but the pepper and jus covered up how overcooked it was."

"We went to celebrate our anniversary and it was fabulous! Excellent food, fantastic service! We come back for sure and recommend this place! It felt like fine dining without the stuffy atmosphere that most of these fine places have. It was a very stylish, but relaxed dinner and the waitress was very attentive!"

"We met our friends that we don't get to see very often at the BlackShop at noon on Sunday April 7th for Brunch. The Brunch and Lunch menu are both available. Seeking a more private setting we asked to be seated in one of the side areas of the restaurant . The restaurant was busy but not packed. Our area was only occupied by the 4 of us. Service was attentive and given our interest was in Brunch, our drinks of Orange Juice and Mimosa's were ordered and quickly delivered. We ordered a made to order omelette, 2 lobster eggs Benedict, plus the feature french toast. The food was excellent. We stayed from 12 to 2 and were never rushed. We were even offered more coffee after we paid our bill and were talking still talking. We will return!"

One of the ladies in my group is going through cancer treatment (chemo) for the third time. Her taste buds are out of wack and she is very negative, as we might all be in her situation. She returned her Gulasch soup, but then liked the leek soup.
Living close to Elmira, there are a number of good restaurants closer for me, but I do like the Blackshop a lot and know that I can always rely on the food and service, if I want to invite friends or when we have a special occasion.

"Our table was in the open area, although there are many private rooms available as well. I was surprised at how intimate it felt, being able to hear my friends, but no one else. The food was delicious all-round - some tried fish, some veal and some beef. Everyone raved about their dish. Lots of good flavours that melded together. Many outstanding choices on the menu, making it difficult to settle on just one meal. Looking forward to a repeat of the experience!"

"There were three of us in the party. We each had one of the fish features and they were delicious. The appetizers were great as well, although my wife thought that the Salmon Tartar would have been in smaller pieces. Still great taste. Theserver was a little quirky, but overall the level of service provided was top drawer. I would recommend this restaurant to any one."

"Went there for my dads 75th birthday but mention it as he gets mad when anyone makes a fuss over him. Most of the food was okay but his steak was medium rare not medium well and by the time I told the waitress he was almost done and she offered to take the food that was on his plate and reheat it on the grill. My lobster was soo overcooked it had the texture of chicken and I didnt realize till the end of consuming my meal where she offered to remake it. They comp'd us free dessert that was worth maybe 10 bucks to make up for the 80 dollars worth of messups. Id come back her for brunch but I wont return for dinner anytime soon."

"We chose this restaurant after a recommendation from our daughter. I had requested a quiet table for our anniversary when I reserved and we were seated right by the fireplace. Perfect ambiance, great service from our waitress. She was very knowledgeable and suggested cocktails and items from the menu. We had Salmon Tartar and calamri to start. My husband had the Paella and I had the veal scallopini for main. All of the food was excellent. Scallops in the paella were perfectly cooked, as was all the seafood. Veal was tender and pasta perfect. Had the creme brulee trio for dessert and loved the special touch of anniversary decoration on plate. Never felt rushed, perfect table maintenance. This really is a gem. Looking forward to going again."

"I ordered the prime rib and my husband ordered the ribs, both were excellent. My order came with a ceasar salad,I prefer a greek salad, that was not a problem. The waitress was quick to point out that I could have a greek salad. We are from out of town and are returning to the Cambridge area on the 13th of March. "I'm sorry to say that our experience at Blackshop was not a good one. We were a party of four and 3 out of our 4 dinners were not good.The server and the manager were very apologetic and tried to do everything they could to make things better but when you are paying 30-45 dollars for an entre, you expect to get good food.
I am a foodie and a bit critical of my food but I have never had this experience before. Paella; no spice, no flavour, starchy, couldn't find the chorizo. Beef Bourgignon; I've made this myself before....should be a slow braised and tender stew... more like tough meat with gravy ladeled on top.No pearl onions or mushrooms.Hard to believe this is a one off situation when 3 of 4 dinners failed.Appetizers were good though."

"When we walked in the place was busy, always a good sign from my vantage that other customers also like the place. The service was prompt, efficient, and friendly. The wine selection is excellent but a little on the pricey side. My steak was cooked exactly as order. My wife had a special desert that the owner arranged for, a real touch of class service."

"My fiancee and I enjoyed a special menu for 2 on Valentine's day. The decor was very pleasant with all the paintings available for purchase. On a very busy night we were attended too very well.
She enjoyed a ferrero rocher martini that was nice and sweet. The lobster bisque was well seasoned and spiced accordingly. She had, what I assume was, freshly made gnocchi tossed with an array of mushrooms, caramelized onions, and gargonzola cheese sauce. I had the chicken supreme with a crab and cream cheese. The asparagus slivers had a zesty citrus flavour which surprisingly complimented the meal quite well. We both enjoyed the moist white chocolate cheesecake with raspberry coulis."

"Went to blackshop for Valentine's day took 1 hour to get our appetizer after that we were getting rushed out so the server could get another paying customer in. $140 for 2 people is ridiculous I will never be back horrible service and for the price of the food I have had better for half the price that I paid waste of time"

"My Husband and myself have been to your restaurant quite a few times. We actually 1st discovered you when you were located accross from Dickson park. We have never had a bad experience, at your establishment. I have taken alot of people there who also have come to love the atmosphere and food. I took my mom there for the Mother's day dinner and she talks about the restaurant all the time. Your staff always make us feel welcome and I have never had a bad experience. We have been their for all seasons sat on your patio and loved that too. This is a great spot and you are your staff are very professional and you will definately see us again!"

"We have been to the Blackshop on numerous occasions and have always enjoyed it. On our last visit, however, we were a bit upset with the service. Our server Emily forgot several items and came across very impersonal and a bit deflating to us and our guests (we were celebrating a 6oth birthday). This won't affect us coming back because we've always enjoyed our meals and our service at the Blackshop and consider this experience to be an exception, however we felt compelled to provide this feedback as we were not impressed at all with Emily. Most servers we have had in the past, however, are A1 and one would only expect that the Blackshop will keep up this standard of service as being one of the best fine dining establishments in the region."

"I was surprised by our experience as it was completely opposite to what we've been accustomed to from BlackShop. Overall, I was disappointed with our table, the service and while the food for everyone else was excellent, my entree (beef bourguignon) was overcooked, particularly the jus and not very appealing at all. The table was in the middle of the room and as people were coming in the restaurant my wife and our friend caught a draft. Additionally, the service, while very friendly, wasn't very attentive -- my guess was they were understaffed that night. All in all, a disappointing experience and one we shouldn't have when your spending $300 for a fine dining experience."
