Sole Restaurant
Solé Restaurant and Wine Bar is situated in a 150 year old Seagram's building, minutes west of the Waterloo Uptown Core. The interior soars two stories high to a timber frame ceiling, exposed brick and generous wood finishes, set the tone for an elegant yet casual experience. The menu will transport your palate to the Mediterranean. Items ranging from thin crust pizza, pastas, vegetarian entrees, steaks, to rack of lamb will satisfy any appetite. An extensive wine list (with a Wine Spectator Award of Excelence), great selection of Scotch, local and imported beers on tap complement the experience. Service is professional yet friendly. Solé is waiting to take you away and deliver a complete dining experience. "Quite the find, near the old Seagram Distillery of Waterloo, with ample parking and easy access to Uptown Waterloo. Cozy ambiance, yet exciting and evocative, too, with large windows allowing us to watch the huge snowflakes come down outside. A very professional, helpful, and friendly wait staff, providing us with a special and intimate dining experience. The food was superb, and the menu full of a wide variety of tempting traditional and creatively-new choices. The desserts were exquisite, and we especially enjoyed the opportunity to get mini-dessert portions as well. We look forward to the next time we are in town to dine at Sole again."

"It was a beautiful spring day and we were able to have our lunch on the patio. The service was quick and friendly. We ordered the bruschetta to start and both of us had the Sole pizza. It was very good. Nice thin crust. Dessert was very good. I had the mini creme brule, which was a perfect size and my friend had the mini carrot cake. Again, a perfect size."

"My sister "picked up the tab" for a very enjoyable birthday lunch (my husband really enjoyed the Red Snapper). We sat on the patio, along the narrow strip east of the building and found the location a bit noisy ... nothing you could help. If we sit on the patio again, I will ask for a table near the restaurant exit - in the big, square area - as far from the street as possible."

"I must say my expectations were not met when we went to Sole for lunch on Sunday. The food was fine but nothing special. The service was fine but nothing special. I had heard such great reviews that it did not live up to my expectations. Definitely not worth the money in my opinion."

"Sole has become a fixture on the dining scene in Waterloo. The setting - an old machine shop for the original Seagram Distillery, has been transformed into an upscale, attractive wine bar-style venue, although the emphasis is more on food than drinking. The dining room is not large, but that give it a feeling of attractive intimacy. . The menu is eclectic, with some good pizza and pasta, as well as mains that change seasonally and a nice selection of well-done openers. While not inexpensive, it is good value for the quality of food and service. I will definitely return."

"Went for brunch for the first time at Sole. Was very excited, but in the end very disappointed. The food was average. Portions (for brunch) were very small. Selection of items very limited. I have not been happy in the past with my experiences with dinner, so this was their last chance with Brunch. Sole has permanently come off my dinning list. There are too many other good restaurants in the KW area."

"Unfortunately this is now our second trip where the food and service was poor. I ordered a beef tenderloin medium rare and it was medium at best and tough. The creme brulee was lumpy too and we had a difficult time getting good service. We asked for more bread and drinks a few times while we waited for our food but they took forever. Oddly enough it was a Friday but the place was only half full, so I doubt it was the kitchen holding things up."

"Very poor table outside kitchen door. Wierd inattentive initial service. Wait staff ignored our 4-year old; had to flag him down to get things rolling for her. Excellent, reasonably priced wine. Waiter could not effectively communicate the features - it sounded like he was reading an English translation of a list in another language. Very, very expensive overall."

"I travel to Waterloo once a year and always make a point of dining at least once on every visit at Sole. I have never been disappointed, indeed I consider them to be one of the finest restaurants of all my worldwide travels. This was my first 'brunch' and I was just as happy as my experiences at previous 'dinners'."

"The food was excellent but the loud music was a bit over-powering for the upscale venue. The musical selection was also a bit strange -- too upbeat perhaps rather than relaxing and conducive to conversation. I loved the veal osso bucco and the desserts. Would definitely dine there again. "from the moment you walk in the door to the moment you leave, the attention to detail is evident. I particularly appreciate the warm plate the food is served on (something I do myself at home). The staff comes around just often enough so as not to feel neglected or pressured to hurry on with the meal. I will definitely be returning to this restaurant."

"On entering we were warmly greeted, coats taken, and placed at a table for two. The server was excellent, she was warm, attentive but not intrusive. There was a bread to nibble on whilst making choices of what to try. Again the server was helpful, in her suggestions. The courses arrived at a nice interval, there was no rush. While we were in the restaurant, a family arrived. The two children were given colouring to do to keep them occupied. They were very well behaved, which was brilliant, there is nothing worse than out of control children, and these were a credit to their parents. The noise level was excellent. The music playing was just loud enough to here, so conversation was easy.The food was amazing."

"Our party of 3 arrived at 11:45AM before lunch rush. Sole has good food but almost 2 hours for lunch for a working group is too long. It was almost 1 hour after seating before entrees arrived. Dessert also took 25 minutes after order
Food was quite tasty and curry vegetable soup with coconut was excellent. Scallop special of the day was also tasty but a little small with only 4 shrimps for $19. Veal scallopini Panini and Spaghettini Bolognaise were tasty but nothing special. Desserts were very good, especially the mini trio and a nice touch was Happy Birthday in icing on the plate of our birthday guest.
Ambiance is good but a little noisy for a 1/2 full restaurant with a lot of hard surfaces"

"Service was excellent, however the pasta dish I ordered was over cooked, and the sauce was terrible. Far too much bacon which made it incredibly salty, and far too much butter in the sauce which made it seperate from the cream.
As I was in a hurry and did not wish to reorder, I scrapped the sauce and bacon off the pasta as best I could to be able to comsume the food.
I would not order that dish again"

"It was a very nice experience, thank you. We were celebrating my daughter's engagement so we'd chosen your restaurant for this special event. Food was excellent, service attentive and prompt. We didn't have to wait for food very long and we didn't feel rushed.The only comment from my group was regarding desert. We ordered sample desert which contained cream brule, cannelloni and carrot cake. My daughter was not impressed by the carrot cake, said it was a bit dry. Otherwise everything was great."

"We enjoyed Sole's atmosphere as it is chic and modern while being welcoming. The opening bread with caramelized onions and our shared arancini were good but nothing I would rave to friends about, nor would either of us want them again. However, the fried manicotti and braised veal osso bucco tower were delightful, we couldn't resist trying each others dishes more than once! Sole's wine list has nice variety, and the server helped us pair our wine to our meals - something we expect from a restaurant of this caliber but do not always receive. We would definitely recommend Sole to friends and the online community!"

"They do beef best, salads are good too, pasta dishes are nice, but skip the fish dishes. For Valentines day we had the crab-cakes (mushy and fishy tasting), the tenderloin was perfectly grilled, white chocolate cheesecake which was rich smooth, but the 'brownie cake was bland.
Decent wine list, some good selections at reasonable prices. Overall, a nice location and beautiful space, always good service; but stick to the salads and grilled meats or pasta."

"We enjoyed our Valentine's dinner which came with a really nice menu. The food tasted great and came with a wonderful presentation. However, for the ambience and overall experience the meal was overpriced at $50/person, plus drinks."

"Although Sole has been in Waterloo for many years, I finally had dinner there for the first time during this year's Wine and Dine Festival. During this time, they offered a 3-course fixed price menu. My dinner companion and I ordered different starters and entrees and shared. Except for the pork (which I thought was too dry), everything else was perfect.
Service was prompt and the food presentation excellent.
Looking forward to another visit to have a meal from their regular menu."

"My wife and I selected this restaurant to celebrate an anniversary. We were pleasantly surprised with the entire experience. The staff were wonderful and attentive. "We had an excellent time, once again. Invited my sister with her niece, and our server was very understanding and patient.
