"We dropped in at the weekend for a spot of lunch and were excited to find a 'happy hour' lunch menu with some great rolls (especially the Tiger Eye, which we had to order two of). We started with the ceviche and a lobster salad, which were both fantastic and then moved on to the rolls, which were all very tasty. To drink we had the excellent ginger beer and a mocktail of lemonade, cucumber and mint. Exactly what was needed for a hot day. An exceptional meal and just what we wanted, fresh, different, filling but not too much!"

"The food was outstanding, timely, and they had some new innovative dishes. Sean was our server and he was fantastic, he knew a lot about the food and gave good reccomendations. It was little loud but I would blame it on a couple of girls. But other than that it was a great experience."

"I would like to say that I am a regular there, but it's more like Kata Robata is my regular place! I go there so often and LOVE it everytime. Lobster Mac and Pork Belly with the egg is what I get every time. I also LOVE the happy prices. Crunchy rolls and tuna tar tar start off the night perfectly. I come back at least once a month."

"To keep this simple, I agree with the Sushi Club of Houston that this is the best overall sushi and japanese experience in Houston.
Yes, I would say that Uchi may be a more "special" experience, however in terms of quality ingredients, rice flavor, balance of flavor, knowledge of wait staff, customer service, speed of service, and price, Kata Robata beats anything else around."

"As we pulled into the parking lot for the first time and were unable to find a spot and they had no valet parking, my husband declared we will never come back here again. But, we were seated quickly and everything we ordered was delicious. The noise level was not to our liking but it is hard to find a restaurant that isn't loud these days. Guess we'll be back, but I sure wish they would consider valet parking."

"Food was OK but waitstaff was unfriendly. Receptionist was horrible. Waitress was to busy running around. It was as if the receptionist didn't want us to be there the way she looked at us. And we dressed nice. No eye contact, no warm welcome, no smile! It was an awkward and uneasy introduction to the new restaurant that we wanted to try out. We were in the mood for sushi and planned to go to Uptown Sushi but OpenTable recommended this place so we decided to give it a shot. That was a mistake! We travelled the world and ate at many restaurants and this was the weirdest experience we had with an eating place. Not gonna recommend to any friend nor family."

"The food was creative and artistically realized. Chef Hori truly is an outstanding sushi chef. Our waiter, whose name I sadly never caught because of the noise, was well-versed in the menu and offered excellent recommendations that were focused on helping us have a wonderful dining experience, rather than pushing us to specific items. The one disappointment was that Chef Leung was not present to create a dessert that would have complemented our meal better than the menu desserts."

"Service was slow -- we sat around for half an hour before anyone took our order (there was no bartender at lunch, so our waiter was making drinks at the bar). Omakase was not available, and a description of how to experience this were not clearly stated on the website or on the menu. Seafood sashimi sampler was great, lobster mac and cheese was okay -- a little one-note, and kobe beef teriyaki bento box was okay. Kobe beef was incredibly tender, but that and the chicken teriyaki had no discernible teriyaki taste (chicken was very dry). Tofu was fried but soaked with sauce, so it was not crispy...just a bunch of mush. Overall, it was okay -- would give it another try."

My wife & I are adventurous eaters & are always willing to try new items no matter how unusual they may be. We have visited pretty much every highly rated sushi restaurant in Houston & we always look forward to coming back to Kata. This restaurant has a modern take on sushi - the good traditional sushi menu is their in addition to the modern, edgy take on sushi. The Kata-jito drinks are amazing - Our favorites are the bone marrow, foie gras & scallops, & 72 hr cooked kobe beef. We prefer this place over Uchi. The service is always excellent. It is best to book reservations if possible though to avoid a long wait."

"I ordered the rice dish,'Pork Don' and the Ramen, and it was so delicious! Great items. However the Sunlight dish- slices of peppercorn tuna with truffle oil wasn't very pleasing. Too much pepper and the truffle didn't really do too well with it. This may be due to the way it was served. Don't get the Sushi of this dish, be sure to ask for the sashimi. Friday and Saturday nights can be hectic, and the service will suffer slightly, depending on the waiter/waitress you get. "We had a date night here, and thought it was pretty good - but we won't RUSH back to try it again. We had several plates. the sushi rolls (we had the Rising Sun roll and the Longhorn roll) were excellent. The slow cooked Kobe beef was incredible. We tried the amberjack and fois gras dish, apparently it is award winning. We were disappointed. It was fine, but we will not order it again. If we do go back, we are sticking with the sushi (and the kobe beef). Oh yeah, servings are small - tapas style. EXCEPT the lobster mac and cheese is huge. It is pretty good, as well, but I would save my stomach space and calories for the sushi and beef."

"The food and service were pretty good, but for the price I think they could have been better. The restaurant has a fairly typical modern decor and a completely open floor plan. The noise level is a little more than I would have preferred. I didn't regret going there, but there are many other sushi restaurants that I would recommend before here that have a lower price point."

"But they need more Japanese Izakaya food items to become not only a Texas reference but a USA reference.
If they want to lead with Uchi the Midwest of USA in terms of Japanese food, they have to differentiate. Uchi is concentrated on citrics and Peruvian-modern style but Kata Robata should focus on high quality of Izakaya items and increase grilled fish with buri, flounder, cod, shrimp, hake, monlfish, octopus, white fishes in general, etc and use sake, soy, dashi to cook like "nabe" style.
If they want to lead with Uchi the Midwest of USA in terms of Japanese food, they have to differentiate. Patio is very nice. I would offer beer and sake in a bar outside with small plates. The patio has a tremendous potential here with the Houston weather but it is not well used. Mosquitos could be a problem but can be solved with proper covers."

"After going there for the Pork Belly Throwdown, we have been wanting to dine at Kata. Overall it was impressive. The waygu beef skewers were melt in your mouth, literally. Excellent. The special beef tempura was also very tender and flavorful. The crazy roll, while I'm sure boring to most sushi connoisseurs, was great for me. The ingredients were obviously fresh and the taste was surprisingly good for a basic roll. I gobbled it up! It was one of the best rolls I have ever had. Will have to elevate my tastes to sashimi next time. The Kata Ramen and Pork Belly Don were just ok. I can't really hold it against them because I think my view of ramen has been spoiled by my excellent ramen experience in SF China town. Would def go back!"

"My wife and I briefly reviewed the menu before dining here and just salivated at everything. With that said, upon arrival we asked out incredible waiter, Thai, if there was a way we could sample our way through the menu and he recommended we do a more tapas style dinner with items recommended by himself and the chef. He did not steer us wrong. After 8-9 small courses we were more than full but wished we could have sampled more! Incredible experience and most definitely will be back!"

"This is our top favorite, the manager is one of the best, always on top of things. We has an occasion where our waiter was a little late taking our order and the manager took it and brought us a nice comp dish that was delicious.

"I may have just missed the boat on this restaurant, but I've been three times and have not been blown away on any occasion. The cocktails aren't stellar, the ambiance is a unbalanced, and the food is just okay. Nothing is bad, it's just not as great as I had expected. I thought I may have been having an off day, but my out of town guests agreed."

"The food was delicous. They have great lunch specials, but I really recommend the specialty rolls! The service was slow to get started but when we told them we had to make it a quick lunch the food came out very quickly - especially compared to other sushi restaurants!"
