Restaurant Reviews for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

10 Central Park South
New York, NY 10019

Originally known as “The Men’s Bar,” the Legendary Oak Room has been restored to its original grandeur. A German Renaissance tour de force, the oak-paneled room looks the same today as it did when The Plaza opened in 1907. Re-opened in Fall 2008, The Oak Room once again provides the quintessential New York experience. Chef Eric Hara, from David Burke fame, has taken over the kitchen to recreate a timeless menu. Enjoy his famed cuisine while dining in a setting matched perfectly - either sitting in The Oak Room or The Oak Bar. Our more formal menu is served in The Oak Room, surrounded by original tile flooring and the famous Oak walls; a lighter, more casual menu is served in our Oak Bar, overlooking Central Park. Reservations are taken up to six weeks in advance.

Dining Style: Casual Elegant
Price: $31 to $50
Parking: Valet

The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel Reviews List

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We were visiting from out of town and this restaurant was on our radar from having stayed at the Plaza in the past. We had a lovely meal but our waiter (have no name but he was bald) was the most unfriendly with no personality or smile. We also found out later that a friend of ours who resides in the city and owns a number of restaurants, experienced the same waiter and service."

Review 3 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"A $65.00 Bruch not including a drink or coffee is very steep. When you combine it with pressure to order the main entree, from the moment you sit throught the open shell food bar,and the invisible sashimi and tuna/lobster sandwiches and tacos Cart.Their strategy, order the entree 1st,the less you'll have of the others.Entrees terrible:Been heated and try to find the Lobster in the Eggs Benedict;Lobster Cobb salad:Again find the Lobster,a couple of bacon pieces,a bit of avocado, and a pile of greens more than a rabbit can consume. The Raw Bar:some oysters, stale shrimps, and not lobster tails but pieces of it,and the carcass of the lobster body. The bill with 3Teas & no drinks, a$298 (3of us)including 18%tips you're not told so you can tip again."

Review 4 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I enjoy the Plaza for a low-key drink at a beautiful landmark; however, it would have been nice if someone took my coat on a cold, snowy night so that I did not have to sit on it. Also, do NOT order the tuna tacos, otherwise seen literally as 2 corn chips with tuna on top."

Review 5 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I went to the Oak room during restuarant week for dinner. I had the lobster bisque and chicken, while my date ordered the sashimi and the filet. My date's meals were good. My lobster bisque was within the top 5 I have ever had. Although, I am not generally a person who orders chicken at restaurants, the chicken was the best chicken I have ever had. It's a steal for $35pp!"

Review 6 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Kitchen should be more attentive for the price. Especially the executive chef; was he sleeping when my entrees came out. Mind you, I'm a classically trained chef. Dinner began with some great starters which inspired and had me looking forward to the rest of the evening. First thing you learn in culinary school is that the first thing people notice about their food is the temperature. How dare you send out cold food! And when someone asks for their duck pink it shouldn't come out brown and well done. Venison was also cold and overcooked beyond request. Sides might have been good but were also cold. Wake up chef, there's more to being in charge than designing an interesting sounding menu...knowing how to execute it well!!!"

Review 7 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The room is stunning, in a good way. The service is stunning, in a bad way. We finally had to get up from our table and go to the front of the restaurant to ask for a check - this was 2 hours in, and they hadn't even cleared our dinner dishes and given us a dessert menu yet. If you've got all night, great place to go! The food was just ok - the chef has some great thoughts about innovation, but misses the mark by just a teeny bit on pretty much every dish, resulting in a so-so culinary experience."

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"what can I say, this place lived up to its named...great atmosphere, food was extraordinary...best NY strip ever, I had the ash cured venison and was amazed. I never had it before, but will again...Very pricey, but again, well worth the money..went with my 13 yr old daughter, she had the strip and ate the whole thing...that should tell you how good the food really was...she even ate the beef tartare appetizer and wanted more....highly highly recommend, but get your check book out...to give you an idea of price, the two of us had a 3 course meal, wine, dessert, bread and the bill was well over $150...."

Review 14 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The dessert selection seem limited. However, I must admit that I'm more of a chocolate to dark chocolate person, so mint chocolate on the menu is not particularly pleasing to my palate. Nevertheless, the evening at the Oak Room was perfect due to the fact that instead of having dessert typically immediately after dinner, my wife and I decided to have dessert after we attended our show (at the hotel where we were staying). Thank you for a wonderful and memorable evening at The Oak Room -- the staff was superb!!!
Best Regards,
Marc

"You have to love the ambiance of The Oak Room! From its location in the famous Plaza Hotel to its extravagant oak finishes, The Oak Room exudes old world charm. Wonderful steak grilled to perfection served alongside a sophisticated wine list. And be sure to indulge with dessert. May I recommend the "Oak Bar" or the mini ice cream cones? Either provides a perfect finish to a great dinner."

"the waiters are nice and take good care of you, however, the hostess girls are horrible, they are not kind at all, they dont even say good evening, they look at you with one brow up and it looks like they make you a huge favor when you ask for your table. they make you wait 20 minutes or more and send you to the bar (even with reservation)honestly thats not a good start... we were close to leave the place since I was there to celebrate my husbands bday...anyway the place is gorgeous and you forget all that when you taste a good wine, some fresh oysters and a very good waiter"

"I rarely write reviews, but this was truly a wonderful dining experience. The Oak Room ambiance is rich with history and exudes a nostalgic sense of old New York. We went for 2010 Restaurant Week and I enjoyed fantastic three course dinner which included a grilled cheese/tomato soup starter, lobster sausage and broccoli rabe, and finished with "The Oak Room" dessert. Make this a must-go if you frequent restaurant week."

"Five of us celebrating a birthday attended during Restaurant Week. The hostess was gracious when some of the party were late, and remembered my name after I checked in and returned to see if my guests had arrived. The Restaurant Week menu was varied and offered a number of excellent options. All but one of the five ordered exclusively from it. The food was creatively presented and excellent, and the service all one would wish. We will be back."

Review 27 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The splendor that is the Oak Room. Love the food, love the atmosphere, sat in the main dining room. Unfortunately the seating was not condusive for both of us...halfway thru we were able to be moved, in order for both of us to face out and see the grand spaciousness of the room. We ordered off the Restaurant Week menu and ordered an additional appetizer, that thru off the wait staff and we were left waiting for our second course, they then attempted to bring out the main course before the second appetizer, it continued in that manner with additional bread and finally received our dessert well before our coffee which we had ordered originally.
Overall the room is spectacular and unique, I'll give the wait staff a pass this time...

Review 30 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"My overall experience at The Oak Room was great. I went to RW lunch and found the food and decor of the place fantastic. The lobster and sweet corn bisque was phenomenal. The steak was good but the fries were too salty. The service was the one bit that I was not thrilled with. Our waiter was rarely around and when I had asked for lemon wedges with my drink, he did not bring it until i had asked another time and even when he had brought out our food. I had wait half an hour for them and was not pleased. Besides service, i had a great time at the oak room. I want to definitely go again."

Review 36 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"Reservations were for Oak Room but because the room was being used for a catered affair we were accommodated in the famous Oak Bar. It was good that the fourth person in our group had canceled because we were able to stack our bulky coats on his chair. No offer was made by the hostess to check them. Unbelievably The Oak Bar doesn't serve tap beer but it does make a good Bloody Mary. The Lobster Bisque and Tomato Soup were good. The Lobster sausage too spicy. The hamburger ($5 supplement) ordered medium was served well done with an superfluous amount of shoestring fries reminiscent of fast food. The waitress' reply that she was sorry did little to make amends. The wait for desert was way too long. Such a landmark restaurant should do better"

Review 38 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The Oak Room is a NYC institution with an illustrious past. That is not to say, however, that it is tired. I would rather describe it as special. It has warmth and roots and authentic atmosphere. Having been there several times, and having never had a negative moment there, I recommend it unequivocally - particularly if you have an out of town guest and you want to share a memorable, uniquely NY experience. Don't be intimidated by the location; you will be treated graciously. The food is consistently very good - as is the service. If nothing else, go to the bar, have a drink, enjoy the atmosphere, and savor the incredible craftsmanship that went into its creation."

"The restaurant was way too cold. I don't know how they can keep the restaurant so cold in this NY weather. I've heard other customers also talked about it. Review 47 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We all know the Plaza is in big financial trouble, and it's a shame to think this lovely room, one of the most gorgeous in the city, if not the most, may soon be gone. It's romance personified, rich with history and tradition, makes you feel royal just to be there. The Restaurant Week food was superb, the service a bit uninformed (try pronouncing "chenin" properly guys...) but efficient and pleasant. But the real scene is the Oak Bar right next door, that's where "today's" aficionados are hanging out; noisy, social, buzzing, alive. The Oak Room itself needs to have some life injected. No it shouldn't emulate the bar, but somebody with a knack for injecting "foodie excitement" needs to take charge. Maybe Danny Meyer would like to try."

"I absolutely loved this place. The food was wonderfull. It's so great to have "Restaurant week" which allows you to try out restaurants that you might not be able to visit. The Oak Room has such lovely history and it's so wonderfull to see that the staff do not take this for granted and therefore treat the customer as if they're the most important person in that great room.

I would definitely dine there again and will definitely recommedn this rstaurants to everyone I know.

"We were a group of 5 on Christmas day. The ambiance there was hectic and very impersonal. The service wasn't exactly bad, but not good either. There was a feeling of being rushed and it was difficult to get the waiter's attention. My friend received underdone potatoes, which were replaced hectically and very late. "Out of all of my "restaurant week' experiences to date, dinner at the Oak Room was by far the best experience. The hostess and waiters were friendly, accomodating, and gracious. Review 60 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"What a huge disappointment and a shame. When you enter the building you feel as though you've walked into an empty stage set. The furniture is there but not much else. The restaurant week menus are not terribly inspiring but we tried to choose some good basics. My food was all oversalted, some to the point of being unedible. Tempura calamari-too salty with not a sign of "tempura" texture or flavor. Loster Cobb salad ($10 supp), ok (but salty) with tasteless lobster. If you want to go to the Oak Room, have a drink in the bar which is much brighter. The one highlight was discovering a whole little world of shopping booths in the basement of the building including Demel (from Vienna) for pastries and chocolate."

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"An outstanding experience!!! But... one of the most expensive places in NY with the worst service. Almost 30 minutes to take an order? Another 25 for bringing the meal? Well... it was one of the most exciting experiences in my life, ever."

Review 70 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Excellent food, good service, beautiful décor. It is pricey but good for a treat if you are in the area. I had the NY strip steak; excellent cut (bone end) and cooked just right. Tuna Sashimi appetizer was excellent. Wife had the salmon and a Caesar salad, both where very good. Uncle Marvin had the chicken, which was very good. Wine by the glass was good selection. Portions where good sized and was a good experience."

"Unlike the previous year, this December 24 the restaurant changed the chairs and tables to be able to fit in more people. So it was loud and noisy.

Food was OK
Service was OK.

Review 74 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"We had reservations for the Oak Room on Christmas day expecting a quiet and elegant experience but instead we were seated in the Oak Bar, which left us frazzled. Tables were squeezed together to accommodate the large holiday crowd, and we sat cheek by jowl to a table that included three under-supervised young children, one of whom hung on my chair briefly while the other two fought over a toy truck. The staff were excellent and attentive, but we looked longingly at the serene Oak Room as we departed, wishing the Plaza had let us know in advance that we would be shunted to the crowded and noisy bar so that we could have made other arrangements."

Review 75 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Everything was great. The only problem I had was with the server... He was too non-chalant about serving us until we requested a check that we could sign back to our room at The Plaza. How quickly his attitude changed from callous to almost nauseatingly friendly.

Will definitely return for sake of great food and ambience but will definitely request a different server if I happen to be unlucky enough to draw the same one.

Review 76 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Yes, it was Christmas Day in NYC so the restaurant was understandably crowded. Unfortunately, there was a computer glitch that seemed to grind things to a near-halt. We were there for 2+ hours, during which time the bus staff was quite attentive -- the waiter not so. My fish was tasty but lukewarm. Our tab for three (including two mimosas) was $500, including a $15 per plate upcharge for the dover sole (not shown on the menu). A memorable experience to be sure, but not for the right reasons!"

Review 79 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Very good Christmas Eve price fix dinner w/ a few choices on each course. We knew this in advance. Good wines, small list...Only negative was they tried to seat us right next to another couple when there were still plenty of open spaces throughout the dining area, but when we complained, they moved us to a better spot. On the whole, it was the traditional good service for which the Oak Room is known."

Review 80 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Food good, however high for what you get as it is only fix priced, most of the starters and entrees had supplements. If you are charging for every extra grain of salt, just make your high fix price even higher.

Bread was cold, not good.
There are no substutites as our waiter told us everything is prepared in advance.

Review 81 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"All the dinners are Prix-fix so you can't order al la carte. It was quite pricey but the restaurant had a good wine and scotch selection. I had some very tasty oysters, foie gras for appetizers. For a main dish I got TWO scallops with bacon draped across the top, I should have ordered a steak. The Oak Bar dessert was very rich but tasty. Make sure to bring your Platinum credit card and you'll be fine."

"Great food, but hands down the worse service I have ever seen in my life. Finally received coffee after asking 5 times (to our waiter mind you) and waiting for almost one hour. Review 91 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The Lobster and Sea Urchin BLT was fun...the aforementioned ingredients with sourdough gnocchi, oven dried tomatoes, crisp prosciutto and lettuce emulsion, served in a bowl. It didn't taste like a BLT as I guess I should have presumed, despite the respective ingredients, but I wouldn't change a thing. Arguably the Gnocchi was the bread, and the marriage of all items created a cloudy sauce that might resemble mayonnaise. The prosciutto came through with its salty, brittle texture. The Ash Cured Venison with cauliflower puree, pickled pear, black trumpets, and huckleberry captivates in print but was not fully harmonious. The pickled pear made no apologies. Can't recall the chanterelles. Instead a cubed, bland root veg. But venison delighted."

Review 92 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We were all so excited about Thanksgiving lunch at the Oak Room in the Plaza and were so disappointed by the overall attitude, mood and service. Despite having reservations over a month ahead of time our hostess stopped my at the door 3 times after having already been seated. Our waiter couldn't remember our orders and had to be reminded to bring requested courses, was either overloaded or uncaring. We had arranged to celebrate my mother's 82nd birthday during the meal and the wait staff decided to bring the dessert, candle and sing happy birthday...while I was away from the table! Totally inconsiderate and uncaring. Considering the $500+ tab for lunch for 3 adults and a child I would not think twice about returning...I just wouldn't."

Review 95 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Quite frankly I was very dissapointed with the experience -- both the food were not at par with a hotel of the Plaza's caliber. The Raw Bar was excellent and offered good seafood, the "cart" offerings were acceptable but the wait staff selects what they put on your plate. Main entree was a disaster, they got my order wrong, I ended up with two eggs benedict over an almost burnt McDonald's style potato pattie. This was accompanied by some kind of potatoes that not only looked unappetizing but had a very strange taste, I'm a foodie, I know good food, this is not the place for it. Service was beneath acceptable, I had to ask for coffeee three times, no attentiveness either. Not recommended at all."

Review 100 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"My daughter and I celebrated Thanksgiving dinner at your restaurant. I must tell you that for $400, I was quite disappointed. The meal was prepared in a very lackluster fashion. The sole had no delicacy of flavor or preparation and hardly deserved to be an extra $15 over the already $110 per plate. The rolls were served one at a time, at room temperature. The desserts were quite small. Thankfully the service was nicely done. I would not make another reservation again at the Oak Room. We normally have this meal in our hometown at a very highly respected restaurant and have a lovely evening."

"Definitely not the experience I was hoping and paying for. Went for their special Thanksgiving menu and the food was so so and the wine list very expensive and severely lacking in choice. The dining room, while impressive in it's historic scene, isn't a great dining room - it was noisy and cold. Given the price of the event ($500 for 3 people) I was expecting more than men in jeans with the dog in their lap !!"

After about 10 minutes had passed since the initial time of our lunch meeting and teh 2 people who were joining me had yet to show up, I asked if there was another restaurnat called The Oak Bar/Room, and was told no.About 10 minutes after that, I went to teh hostess station to make sure no one had come in using my name or their names for teh reservation and was told no. 30 minutes had elapsed, when I ahppened to look around the room and noticed my party was seated at another table. Review 105 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"BEAUTIFUL ROOM - FOOD WAS GOOD BUT THE SERVICE WAS SURPRISINGLY CHAOTIC. OVERALL NOT THE EXPERIENCE ONE WOULD EXPECT FROM THE PLAZA. THE FACT THAT IT WAS NOT FULL ON A FRIDAY WHEN OTHER UPSCALE RESTAURANTS HAD NO AVAILABILITY SPEAKS FOR ITSELF."

Review 107 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We had a wonderful time.We were warmly greeted and felt their excitement for us that we were dining at the "Plaza" The lighting was a bit dark until about halfway through the meal "someone" must have noticed how dark it was, because they turned up the lights....

The music selection was a bit odd for the room. Modern pop music was being played. I think for the occasion and the history of the room-maybe something a bit more classical or standard would have been a better fit.

We had to send the bill back twice before we were charged correctly for our meal. The first time we were charged for a glass of wine we did not have and the second time the bill came back over $100 more than when we sent it back the first time!

Review 108 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Service was slow because it was a busy night. Food was tasty but over priced plus they added 18% service charge on top of the food.
We were just 2 people and with 2 glssses of champagne and bottles water and the $95 per person dinner the total came close to $405.

Review 109 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We had a great lunch at the Oak Room. Made reservations for 12 Noon not realizing that the restaurant actually just opened at this time. The food was good, especially the salads. We ordered dessert and coffee but service lagged at this point making us feel a little rushed at the end trying to make our Broadway show matinee at 2pm."

Review 115 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We looked forward to a very special meal at the Oak Room and were not disappointed. The experience was stellar from the enthusiastically warm and welcome greeting by the hostess, to the VIP treatment from the waiter, to the magnificent fresh flowers, to the sensational food, to the beautiful presentation. Best of all were the small portions and generous selection - we loved tasting so many delectable treats. Be sure to order the mini fish tacos!"

Review 116 for The Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Very knowledgeable and helpful waiting staff, magnificent decor for this very traditional restaurant. Food was good as well even if not always perfect. The rare venison meat was a bit cold for example but the bay scallops appetzer were very good. Recommended wine was also excellent!
Enjoy your after or pre dinner wandering through the luxurious corridors of the Plaza!
