The Blue Plate opened in 1999 as a casual spot where friends and neighbors can enjoy the best ingredients our seasons have to offer. Owners Cory Obenour and Jeff Trenam have created a space that feels like a home, with three distinct dining rooms each appointed with the work of local artists. In the back, a lush, night-fragrant garden offers an exotic retreat from the bustle of the city. The kitchen stays committed to using the highest quality local produce and meats in classic American and rustic Mediterranean dishes. Through a working friendship with Bay Area farmers, the Blue Plate is expanding the notion of "the blue plate special" to include dining that is casual, affordable, delicious and responsible.
"Family took our mother here for Mother's Day. We had an amazing day, with the help (food & service) of Blue Plate it was an amazing night as well. Thanks!"

"We have found ourselves at Blue Plate a few times lately - our vain attempts to get into Emmy's Spaghetti Shack the first couple times led us here, and now we return because we really like it. Warm friendly service goes a long way to healing the rejection from Emmy's (anyways, my spaghetti is better!). Blue Plate has some great dishes; the meatloaf is a big slab, lightly spicy, and gone all too soon because you keep telling people "try this, it's great!) The portions are generous, there's even something there for vegetarians, and by all means - don't pass up the key lime pie. The best we've ever had; we've gone back a couple times just so we can have that for dessert! Parking is a pain around here, but totally worth it for this place."

"Not my first time here, won't be my last. Waitstaff quite informed and helpful. Kale salad was excellent as was the salmon. Of course the meatloaf and mac and cheese are always a thumbs up! A small restaurant but you never feel like you're on top of the next table as you do in other places."

"We had an exceptional server at Blue Plate this week. She was so nice, helpful and accommodating to my friend and dining companion who is lactose intolerant. The food was delicious, I had the flank steak and pea leaves, which are my favorite veggie without question. The space can get crowded and very loud, otherwise a great experience."

"My friend and I came here on a whim based on a recommendation. The food was excellent....and so was the dessert. We sat outside since it was the most gorgeous day in SF. Highly recommend sitting in the back patio!
Recommendation, their large plates are BIG, so split a small plate, a large plate and a dessert and you'll walk out feeling satisfied, but not too full.
Enjoy!"

"Blue Plate is by far my favorite restaurant in San Francisco. Though the space seems very cramped it is still very comfortable, and the food is always phenomenal. The meat, no matter what kind, is always tender and cook perfectly, just the right amount of juice; and the veggies always crisp and tasty with perfect seasoning."

"Third time to this fantastic place, went with a party of 8 for my wifes birthday and it was as we expected! Service was spot on, food was off the hook, and while the noise level is high, we expected that and everyone enjoyed it. The staff seems genuinely appreciative of your business, and takes pains to thank you for coming. I love this place!"

"I visited because the owner is an old family friend, and my husband and I were visiting San Francisco. The staff were very polite and helpful. The food was great and the menu offered unique things. I was very pleased with our experience."

"After a great beginning, we were practically abandoned by our server. She was responsible for my table (for 2) as well as the entire front room of the restaurant. We waited for about 30 minutes before we saw her again. Finally I asked a food runner to bring us our dessert choice. We were there almost 2 hours. It was a Monday evening, and my date and I thought they were understaffed that night after a busy weekend, or that the "B" team was on, giving veteran pros the day off."

"The folks at Blue Plate took great care of us as usual. We had requested seats the bar which you can't actually reserve, because the friend we were taking out for his birthday loves watching the dynamic choreography of the chefs in the small kitchen creating the amazing food. So, we were seated in the beautiful garden to wait for the bar to open up and besides having to slap each other's foreheads a few times to kill mosquitoes, we loved it and enjoyed the water and wine they brought us until they whisked us away to the bar for an absolutely stellar meal - as usual."

"There was virtually no excuse for the complete absence of service we experienced here. We had a reservation, we are a polite enough crowd of 4, we weren't throwing food or spitting at the server, we weren't hidden off in some far away corner where one could understand that they were crazy busy so they forgot all about us, and if they had even apologized once or twice we would have been understanding. And yet; 15 minutes to get menus, the first course was not an unreasonable wait, but our entrees arrived a full 45 minutes after our first course was cleared. No one made any attempt at communicating with us on this matter. The food was good, but I can get good food a lot of places in this town."

"Cory O. & crew know how to make you feel special on any given night - the food speaks for itself - and while it can be a bit "close quarters" at times, there is many a reason for that - THE FOOD SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. No joke here; no smoke & mirrors - just hard-working folks pulling out all the stops to make your dining experience a pleasurable one WITHOUT PRETENSE..."

"This place is just good, it's small but that's what is so nice about it. I suggest dining later on Friday and Saturday, you don't feel rushed and it's a nice dinner ambiance. The service is wonderful, if you sit near the door you can see the chefs make the food which is very entertaining and everything is really fresh. If you are looking to come and eat quickly this isn't the place, they make everything once you order and it's delicious. It's nice for date night and the food combinations always make me happy."

"Its been a while since I dined at Blue Plate, but was happy that this time exceeded the last memory I had of the food quality. I had a sirloin that was perfectly cooked, with delicious sides, and the appetizers were all fantastic. The grilled calamari with beans was great, but a little skimpy on the calamari itself. The wine selections were terrific, and they were willing to let us sample two wines in order to decide. Good idea! I would definitely go back again soon."

"Once again, Blue Plate was the perfect venue for a group dinner. Everyone enjoyed their meals, the wine was delicious and the service was helpful and unobtrusive. I can't count how many times I've dragged groups of friends here. It's my #1 choice. Thank you, Blue Plate; please don't ever change!"

"I love this place but the noise level is bad enough to make me want to wear ear plugs next time. the food is a kind of comfort/california cuisine, which I love, but we were forced to shout at each other because the noise level. there's no noise baffles, rugs, or insulation to absorb it, and it's just one of the many sf restaurants that have this problem, but it's esp bad when out w/my 85 y.o. dad, someone else who's hard of hearing, or a group. I so wish there were some easy remedy for this! otherwise, everything was great, as ever. love the fried chix, meatloaf, focaccia--all wicked good. also, the waitress was very accommodating about substituting cabbage for the collard greens."

"Food: The farro & egg appetizer was absolutely outstanding. Mac n cheese was only OK. The fried chicken was not a hit and the ricotta dumplings were a step above inedible.
Price: Expensive for what you get. $22 for a single piece of fried chicken with two pickled okra and a scoop of grits? I'll spend the extra $2 at the Wayfare Tavern and get half of a 10 piece cut chicken which tastes better.
Service: Our server was friendly and knowledgeable though not very attentive. Took almost 30 minutes just to come get our order.
Ambiance: It was very busy and we were seated by the open kitchen which I usually don't mind, but conversation was impossible."

"Food was terrific, especially the squid & gnocchi appetizers, and the steak & petrale sole mains. Used the salty/crispy focaccia to lap up the spicy gnocchi sauce - heaven. Very interesting wine list, the Camins del Priorat 2009 ($42) was delicious. Service was exceptional! Shannon, our graceful/beautiful/funny server, gave excellent guidance and knew the wines perfectly and brought us tastes. Its so nice and unexpected to have service like that. She dealt graciously with one in my party who wanted to leave before everyone else and rudely demanded dessert menus (sorry Shannon, she will be dealt with). We had a nicely paced meal and lingered over dessert and coffee. Overall a wonderful time and a great value."

"They need a little help with the scheduling of tables. When we arrived, there were at least 6 parties waiting for tables. Since there is no bar, we all waited outside in the cold or went to the bar down the street. I have been to the restaurant many times-- and have not seen this before. That being said, I might think again before taking my parents there, as asking 70 year olds from LA to wait in the SF cold may be bit much.
On the upside, the food was as outstanding and unique as ever, and the service was superb. I really enjoy the creative menu and freshness of the choices. We had most of the entrees and all were absolutely delicious. My mom, the wine snob, was more than pleased with her glass of Pinot!
I love this place."
