"Food is fresh, but somewhat underseasoned. If you are vegan, you might want to make sure your server understands what this means. Our server came back and asked if I wanted cheese on my sandwich, to which I said no and that I would like a vegan sandwich. It arrived looking nice, but heavy on mayonaise. The server did return it to the kitchen for one without mayo though."

"It was a busy night and there were not enough staff. Our waitress was nice, but she had too many tables to serve. We brought our own wine, but we did not get wine glasses or have the wine opened for 25 minutes. Food took a long time too, and we only had starters/appetizers. We could have used a bit more salt and pepper in the food, but the staff was so busy, we didn't ask. The produce was fresh and tasty though."

"We were on our way back from the Foothills to the Bay Area and decided to stop for dinner. We felt fortunate to have snagged a last minute reservation. We've been here before and have always been impressed by everything - from the time we are greeted at the door, seated at our table, meal selection, our meals (this time - Gazpacho, Risotto with Prawns, Rack of Lamb) and the attentive service (Thanks, Alex for taking such good care of us!) Our only regret? Not having room for dessert! Well, there's always next time and we will return."

"Went to Mustard Seed prior to Mondavi concert. Atmosphere was perfect out on the patio. Servers were attentive and gracious - kept the iced tea flowing. Food was delicious - I don't eat seafood or much red meat, so had the Duck Breast - perfectly done. Enjoyed a good salad beforehand. Salads are a high point - fresh ingredients and somewhat adventurous in their make-up. Duck came with grilled asparagus and mashed sweet potato - great. Server was sure to get me off to the concert in plenty of time. In Davis, a good experience."

"When I looked online for a nice place in Davis to take my son for his birthday, I found Mustard Seed. The website showed lunch hours but only a dinner menu. I made the asumption that they served lunch from the dinner menu. Not a stupid assumption, if they had a lunch menu, wouldn't they have posted it? Arrived to find a very short menu of salads and sandwiches. Waitress said that the website had not been updated since they began opening for lunch. Though the food was good, it was not what I wanted for a celebratory meal."

"We arrived at the restaurant two hours prior to the start time of the Mondavi Center performance we had purchased tickets to attend. We ordered early, but it took 75 minutes for our dinner orders to arrive. We literally were forced to gulp down our dinners To give us enough time to drive to the Mondavi Center, to park. Although the food was fine, the unconscionably long delay ruined the meal for us. I will never dine at this restaurant again."

"Had a superb meal there in 2012 and reserved dinner there again when visiting Davis recently. The restaurant has been sold and the previous chef has gone elsewhere.
Nevertheless, our first dish (crabcakes) was superb. However, the next dish (pork roast was tough and tasteless despite an excellent sauce. The profiteroles for dessert were also disappointing and the dough part was so touch it couldn't be cut with a spoon."

"This was our third visit to The Mustard Seed. Each has been better than the previous. The service was fantastic and the food was even better. We can hardly wait until our next visit with our daughter at UC Davis so we can return."

"Food is delicious and at a good price. Service was outstanding until the end. Coffee came 20 minutes AFTER our desert. We had to ask twice for our bill. We had tickets to Mondavi at 8:00. We began dinner at 5:30 so we would have plenty of time. As it turned out we barely made it due to our waiter dropping the ball."

"We have enjoyed dining at The Mustard Seed for years and are happy to report the new owners have not changed the ambiance, prices or the menu (although seasonally changing the menu and introducing new dishes is a good thing!). We appreciate the price point of the main dishes but the starters all seem a tad higher than they should be. We especially enjoy the adorable charm of the building and back patio. We do miss seeing and interacting with the previous owners since they often served in the restaurant."

"This is a hidden gem! I have heard of Mustard Seed for some time, but I have driven past it many times and didn't even know a restaurant was there. Made a special trip specifically to meet friends for dinner here and had a great experience. The service was perfect, the food fantastic, we will definitely be back."

"This is a great place! The food was perfect & the service was excellent. Something to keep in mind is that this is an upscale restaurant, not at all like a chain restaurant. I would recommend The Mustard Seed to anyone & everyone that loves delicious food!"

"New owners bring some nice updates to the decor and more to come. Our server, John, took excellent care of us and welcomed us to the restaurant. The salads were excellent. My vegetable plate was nicely done and was an off-menu item. We look forward to more variety on the wine list, especially wines offered by the glass."

"We had gone to the Mustard Seed a year ago and had such a good experience that we returned to Davis primarily to eat at the MustardSeed again. We were on our way from Washington to Southern California so stopping in Davis was not too much out of the way. After makingthe reservation, we found that the ownership had recently changed. This was a little disconcerting , however it turned out to make no difference. The food was excellent and the service the same. They have not missed a beat in the transition. The only negative of the restaurant is the size.It is quite small and the tables sit close together making it hard to not feel like you are listening in to the conversation of the other diners."

"The food was generally good but my grandson had the "Crab Cake Trio" appetizer for his main. The cakes were "fishy" and filler loaded. My pork loin was very tasty and tender with a delicious mustard sauce."

"The minute we walked through the door we knew this was a special place. The aromas that met us were incredible. Once food started to arrive, the experience got even better. The goat cheese butter and the home made bread, along with some of the best olives I've ever tasted just heightened the experience. Then came the entres. My duck breast was extraordinary, as my wife's pork.
Didn't try the dessert, or an appetizer... but we'll back!"

"I have been to this place previously, but always with work functions. I made a reservation for my husband's 40th birthday using Open Table. The restaurant was quasi-empty both when we got there and when we left. So it really puzzles me that we were shoved way in the back in a very small space facing the kitchen, and almost suffocated by the smells/smoke coming from the kitchen. I would actually have understood this if they were crowded. Like I said, both front rooms were almost empty - it was a weekday. So even though the food was good, this experience has left me with a bitter aftertaste."

"...should not be my mode of thought when dining. It was a set menu for $69 per person + drinks. The "Silky Lobster Bisque" was chunky, the crab cakes very startlingly small, and the duck was so-so.
I was unimpressed by their short wine list, though it had a few good selections. Also, service was slow and largely impersonal. The preset menu was served over the course of a couple hours, during which time we felt neglected, which wasn't helped by sitting 2 hours on that uncomfortable chair.
What hurt most was that this mediocre meal was $200 for the two of us. Service probably suffered because they automatically add 18% tip, like it or not.
I would have had better food and service at Red Lobster, and not paid so much."

"In a word: INCREDIBLE. I was finally able to book Valentine's Day reservations this year after two years of snoozing and losing. I'm so glad I did. My first time here was Mother's Day last year, and I was able to treat my parents to a fantastic lunch. On my recent return, I had high expectations, all of which were exceeded. The setting was perfect, the atmosphere: perfect For Valentine's, they have a special menu (on their website, mustardseeddavis.com) which looked brilliant. Our waitress was a delight. Sadly, I didn't catch her name. She helped my lady and I choose a wine, and she really made an impression. And the meal... the meal was sublime. It's been a week, and we're still smiling. I don't have the room here to do it justice."

"Usually, this is my favorite restaurant in Davis . The restaurant is cozy, with a warm atmosphere. Service is always very good. Food is what we go for. U fortunately, this time the food was minimumly OK. Caesar salad was very small and tasted like it had just been pulled out of a plastic bag, tasteless dressing. The wild forest mushroom soup with truffle was also tasteless and not very hot. The biggest disappointment was the Prawns and Risotto, which was heavy and pasty with nothing but 4 prawns, also pasty. It was like eating a big bowl of oatmeal!Apparently, ownership has changed but original chef remained. Will give it a try again, but hope the quality of food get's back to what we've been used to.Y"

"What saved this night from being miserable was the food - absolutely fabulous, everything from wine to appetizers to main course to dessert were fabulous. The service, however, left much to be desired, at least at the beginning. The place must have been short-staffed that night, as the hostess, who is possibly the co-owner?, was running around being a waitress, taking orders, serving wine and food, etc. She was obviously frazzled, rude and not attentive at all to those of us who had come in and were waiting to be acknowledged - it is a very small waiting area, and there were 10-12 of us crowded in as it was a cold night outdoors. Once we were seated, it took at least 15 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us with even some bread for the table"

"We were looking forward to this for my daughter's birthday. She had wanted to try the Mustard Seed for years. Food was good but totally spoiled by the noise. Extremely noisy. Very uncomfortable. Space too small to absorb the noise. Owners were on vacation we were told. Menu came stained with food from having been previously used. Too bad!"
