Four years after Celebrity Chef Art Smith opened Art and Soul, the Capitol Hill restaurant underwent a refresh and re-opened in late February 2013. In addition to beautiful herringbone wood floors, textured walls, and unique artwork, you'll also enjoy an exciting new menu. Our approach is driven by our chefs’ Southern roots. "love the relaxed feel of this place - like a comfortable dining room in a friends home. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The salmon was amazing. The Mac & Cheese is a must as a side. If you are a wine lover check out the wine list. Great selection with reasonable pricing."

"Due to a large private party and a bachelorette party our service was slow. We ordered their special cornbread but we didn't gey or until the end of the meal as we were served by someone other than our server who was so busy with the bachelorette party. W were told the fried chicken for one came with 2 legs and 2 thighs but only got one of each."

"I was very much looking forward to brunch here and overall it was a good experience. I was disappointed that the pecan sticky buns listed on the menu online and in the restaurant were not available without explanation. It was odd that they couldn't serve alcohol until 11:00. It was brunch after all. Their website said that mothers would receive something special to take home but after we paid I asked the server and she said there wasn't anything. Upon leaving the restaurant I pulled up with website to make sure I didn't dream it up and sure enough, there it was.
There were two main reasons I wanted dine here, 1) the fried chicken and 2) the grits. The fried chicken at Liberty Tavern is better and this western girl isn't meant to eat grits."

"I had a fantastic dinner here once, and was looking forward to taking my Mom for Mother's day. The food was overpriced for what it was ($55, not including coffee or other beverages), and the food was mediocre at best. Dry ham, and bland quiche, a huge line for the omlette station, cold potatoes, etc. Very disappointing."

"I found the Mother's Day brunch to be somewhat disappointing. Many of the hot items (i.e. waffles) were served cold. Pecan sticky buns, which were supposed to be available for the table, were not. When we asked our server about them, he said they had accidentally ordered only 20 instead of 200. I was perplexed why they would be ordering these items at a high end restaurant, and when he brought them to our table it was clear that they were not freshly made. I would not recommend this overpriced ($50) buffet brunch."

"My husband and I booked for dinner on Mother's day. The food was great, very good portions, especially if you want to select the prefix menu. The rockfish was succulent and cooked to perfection. My friend had grits and shrimp and she was also delighted. The small cakes dessert was fantastic. The sommelier was very knowledgeable and recommended a reasonably priced. very good shiraz. I would recommend this place. Did not know that Art Smith was Oprah's chef!!"

"We made a reservation for breakfast for 8 people at 7 AM at Art & Soul. The entire party was there on time yet we waited at the maitre'd station for over five minutes before we went looking for help. We finally managed to catch the attention of a waiter. He got us seated and got us our drinks. It started getting busy in the restaurant and the service became very spotty. I ordered granola with milk. The granola was mediocre and the milk never arrived. The people at my table described their dishes as just OK. I would probably not ever think about going to this restaurant again because of the poor food and fair service. For the price, there are other options in the area."

"Let me start with "I'm Southern." I tend to be very critical of southern food, and am usually not very find of any spins on southern food. With that said, I took my boyfriend here for his 25th birthday, and we chose the seafood gumbo for two. On first taste, I was concerned about the lack of spice and the darker rue. He noticed a small bowl of chili peppers on the side, which saved the day. It was genius. We were able to spice it up according to our own preferences. Loved! I would without a doubt go back!"

"The food at Art and Soul was amazing, and the service was even better. We had a 1:00 reservation for Sunday brunch, and arrived over 30 minutes early but were still seated immediately. We also requested to be seated outdoors since we had our dog with us, and were accommodated very well - we were allowed to bring our dog into the outdoor seating area, and not just tie her up outside. We also noticed that we were not the only group doing this. The waitress also brought us a water dish and treats! Food arrived promptly, coffee and water were plentiful, and the restaurant was beautiful! Great experience!"

"Oh the things this chef does with corn meal! Loved the cornmeal-dusted catfish! My dining partner loved her cornbread with pork and bean soup. The food here is always outstanding -- and with the newly decorated dining room, this restaurant is even better than ever. It's a little noisy, because it's so popular, but it's proof that people are enjoying this dining gem. Oh, we shared a warm chocolate chip cookie for dessert. Wonderful!"

"Came here on a Monday evening for a business dinner. The restaurant was very busy and with the layout (open tables packed closely together) it created an uncomfortably loud atmosphere (i.e. bar environment) where we found ourselves needing to yell across the table. I didn't realize that the restaurant was attached to a hotel and when we arrived it definitely had a very 'hotel restaurant' ambiance. It took an very long time to be served and for our food to come out. Overall the food was a solid 'ok' but absolutely not worth the price or the wait. Unfortunately I think the restaurant relies too heavily on the allure of being owned by "Oprah's personal chef" and has lost sight of the small details that make dining an experience."

"We were pleasantly surprised by the "Southern food". The service was great and we loved the sides---corn bread, mac and cheese, grits...and some of the best scallops I have ever had. We ate outside for dinner and then had lunch inside the next day. The quiche and burger were great."

"Dined there on 4/11/2013 and it was not great.... I've dined all over the globe from DC to Shanghai and this was the worst service I've ever encountered. We had no less than 3 waiters or what resembled waiters assist us and not once in 2 hours did we receive decent service. I'd be ashamed if I was in charge that evening.... Absolutely would not go back..."

"I am sorry to say that I did not find the food as good as it was before the renovation. I had the shrimp and grits which before was wonderful. This was oversalted, difficult to maneuver (shrimp was in the shell) and the grits was thin and not flavorful. I am only giving the restaurant a "good" rating for old times sake.
The noise was deafening."

"The service was exceptional! The calamari/shrimp/okra starter was really good. The bacon/scallion cornbread;fabulous!! We ordered one to go. My cousin ordered a trio of pork (don't recall the actual entree name), but it had a spicy sausage, pork medallion, and a third type that I did not get to try because my cousin ate it too fast. I ordered the scallops over some kind of cabbage that blew my mind! Scallops were juicy and crispy. Unfortunately, we were underwhelmed with the dessert. We ordered the Baby Cakes, which is a sampler of five mini cupcakes, all of which were very dry. I did not like any of them."

"Potato soup was watery and tasteless. Two diners sent it back to the kitchen after a few spoonfuls, but restaurant did not take the price off our bill. Hangar steak arrived at table cold. Catfish with hoppin john (blackeyed peas & rice) was great. Very noisy restaurant--might be okay for a couple seated at a small table, but not for a group of six at a large table. We won't be going back."
