With a seasonally changing menu and nightly specials, The Red House offers European-style cuisine with the convenience of ordering most items in your choice of appetizer & entree size. The Red House setting is intimate and cozy, tucked into a beautifully renovated historic home in the heart of Harvard Square. Most recently, The Red House has begun collaborating with its very own certified organic local farm to bring you the freshest foods possible throughout the New England growing season.
"Our daughter chose the Red House for her graduation dinner out of all the other restaurants in Harvard Square. The food, service and atmosphere were superb! The desserts were, for lack of better words, to die for! It was a great place to celebrate a very special event for our daughter and family. Thank you so much!"

"It was pretty empty in the dining area, but worked out nicely for our group. I was pleasantly surprised by the food and menu. Everyone in our group seemed to enjoy their dish."

"We usually like the Red House; it has a warm atmosphere, and the noise level is not too high. The staff is friendly and attentive but not overbearing. The beet salad and the kale salad were great, and the scallops appetizer was delicious; the Vietnamese spring roll consisted largely of chopped carrots and was not particularly interesting. The seafood special entree was delicious, but the stuffed pork loin was a failure; the pork was dried out and tough, and the sausage stuffing couldn't make up for it. We'll probably give the place another chance in the future, though."

"We dined at Red House during the monthlong April pop-up restaurant serving Tex Mex by chef Amanda. Terrific food, great vibe, and fun to have the chef stop by and ask us about every course. There's only one Monday left in April, so we're coming back! Please have chef Amanda come again soon!"

"Altho I live in Cambridge, The Red House had somehow escaped my attention. I loved the (typically Cambridge) casual, funky ambience. The menu had some wonderful and unusual choices, it was difficult to select. The food was excellent, I got swordfish and it was tender, mild and juicy. The waitstaff were super nice and attentive. My dinner companion was 40 minutes late and they made me feel welcome and un-pressured as I waited, seated, munching on bread etc and sipping wine."

"We had a nice time at the Red House but the meal and service were uneven. My wife ordered the duck and was asked how she wanted it. She said medium rare but the dish came out medium well and tasted tired. If the dish isn't being cooked to order, it would be better to tell how it will come out rather than ask and then disappoint the client. On the other hand my eggplant special and grilled swordfish were very good.
Service was friendly but a little amateurish. The check arrived after we had been served desserts but before we were asked about coffee. There were other rough edges as well. Not a big problem but something that should be worked on"

"The Red House is a reasonably-priced dining alternative in Harvard Square. It doesn't fall into the cheaper "ethnic" food categories (Indian, Chinese, etc.), it's not as bar-oriented as John Harvard's or a student dive, and it's not as pricey as "special occasion" places such as Upstairs on the Square. They have a number of lobster specialties, and the lobster risotto is a good choice - a good amount of the shellfish in a creamy arborio rice mixture. The service is friendly, and as spring still has not yet arrived, the fireplace in the bar area is a welcoming spot. Overall, unpretentious and pleasant."

"My companion and I had a charming table in the small front room, and the only thing that would have made it more charming would have been if the fire had been lit and the large party did not arrive towards the end of our dinner. How fun for them to have the room to themselves (as we did for a while). The food was very good. We shared a couple of apps and the half portions of our entrees were quite large. I love places that have great food and offer half portions! My companion is from England and we both agreed that only in America would that be considered a "half" portion!
The bar area looks like great fun, and the fireplace in there was lit. It looked lively but not too much so. Another reason I'll have to go back."

"What I love about this restaurant is that you can get half portions of many of the entrees; these are quite adequate in size, especially if you plan on having an appetizer and/or dessert. I had the duck and was asked how I wanted it cooked; my friend had the swordfish. Both were excellent as was the kale salad that we shared. Cocktails were yummy. Dessert choices were good. The main room was hosting a large party, and even on a weeknight (Wednesday), the room was completely full, so the noise level was a little high, though not overwhelmingly so. Reservations recommended! The Red House is in the heart of Harvard Square, but just off the beaten path. It is, as it says, an actual house that has for many years been a restaurant."

"Food was excellent. Ended up trying multiple things as appetizer sizes, to have a variety. Everything was delicious. Service very good, although the waiter did forget my drink til end of meal. Tables are too close together, made for a bit uncomfortable romantic evening. Felt cramped between two larger parties. But overall, is was a very nice dinner."

"Although full, noise was not too bad. Food varied from good to out of this world great (particulary the lobster chowder). Ambience was very nice, bar has a wood fire (only place in Cambridge) and a dining room with a skylight. We had a table under the large skylight, which was very pleasant."

"Great menu. I really enjoyed the roasted kale salad although my husband found his Caesar salad was over dressed. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable about the beers on tap which made my husband meal. Inventive seafood entrees were well done. The restaurant itself is full of quaint charm and located in the heart of Cambridge."

"Had made lunch reservations prior to attending matinee at A.R.T. When we arrived we were warmly welcomed and it was noted that we wanted to be out in advance of curtain. Our waiter was informed and while he did not hover he was aware of our time and served us most efficiently...but never with a sense of rushing us. Really appreciated the fact that the menu entres allowed us to order appetizer portions. Perfect for lunch! Experience was delightful, food was delicious and soon even our waiter responded to the kidding and comments of three little old ladies in tennis shoes. Will return when next in Cambridge."

"The food is good but sometimes inconsistent. The swordfish was very bland as was the beet salad. Very little flavor. Cod was great and deserts were terrific..
I love that you offer 1/2 on most of your dishes. That is one of the reasons we come back to your restaurant."

"My husband and I picked this restaurant from so many in the Harvard Square area. I am glad we did. It was a peaceful and relaxing evening in a rustic and romantic setting. The Red House sits along a quaint alley/cobblestone stretch between two busy corners of Harvard Square. While the food was good, it was the ambience which I enjoyed most. . The cocktail menu was great and I especially enjoyed The Perfect Pear drink. The server was polite and personable. We actually returned to the bar at The Red House later on that evening and also on Saturday evening because it was small and intimate and the servers and bartenders were all friendly and personable. The fire in the bar room was also a nice touch! We will go back to The Red House!"

"My wife and I have been to the Red House twice. Once on a gift certificate from a friend, and on the second occasion on our 18th wedding anniversary. Both times the ambiance, food, and service were excellent. Come hungry and stay for desert and coffee. Both times the bill including wine, best items on the menu, dessert, coffee and (the first time) appetizer came to about $100. It's well worth it. The servers were attentive and made absolutely no move to rush us out the door -- we took our time, enjoyed our meal, talked a lot (a great thing with kids at home and other responsibilities always grabbing our attention), and had the time to reconnect. We probably spent an hour and a half at dinner including desert and it really felt like home!"

"Overpriced for mediocre food. Service was rushed- we wanted to enjoy a nice, relaxing dinner, but it felt like they were trying to move us out of there as fast as they could even though there were not many other customers in the restaurant. Also, they charged us full price for the "2 oysters for $1 special" they advertise because they said that the special only applies to people seated in the bar room, not the dining room (but the manager admitted that this was not stated on the advertisement and agreed to give us the discounted price after we asked why we were charged full price). I will go here again for the oyster special (and make sure I sit in the bar area) but I would not go here again for dinner."

"This is probably my tenth time at Red House and as usual it didn't disappoint. If you get there early enough they have dollar oysters! I had the duck and it was prepared to perfection (medium rare) and my date had one of the fish options which she said was really good. The service was excellent, and our waitress was very knowledgeable about the food AND wine menu. She made plenty of time for us (even though her section seemed pretty full) and was very cheerful and engaging. One of the best parts of Red house is that every option on the menu has two portion sizes. I'm a big fellow but sometimes I go there and get two smaller portions. Another great thing about Red House: The fireplace area and the fact that the restaurant is quiet!"

Everything was delicious and our waitress was amicable and ready to answer any questions we had. The Red House is a superb restaurant that I would recommend to anyone!"

"Service and noise level excellent, but the food has always (in a half dozen visits) been variable. My tablemates were happy with pastas, salad, beef, etc., but the beef risotto was inedible -- not creamy but drowning in oil, and very spicy -- something not mentioned in the description. (I should have sent it back. Server did not take the hint and volunteer a replacement -- afraid of the chef, maybe? We left the usual generous tip, however, giving everyone the benefit of the doubt.)"

"The food was great! The duck breast with schezuan peppercorn pear compote was AMAZING - a brilliant pairing of flavors. The scallops on sauteed leeks were also very good.
I was somewhat surprised by paper napkins and ice-cold pre-wrapped butter pats served with otherwise delicious crusty chewy bread. I'm not sure what they were thinking."

"I was very disappointed at the service. While the food was fair and the ambience decent, when the bill arrived I realized that I had been overcharged for the food. As I asked the waiter about the surcharges, he immediately became defensive and kept repeating that it was on the menu already. An apology would have sufficed. Then, as we were leaving the restaurant, the manager confronted us and implied that we had "under ordered" and that the dining room was reserved for customers who ordered a "full meal" (whatever that meant). Honestly, I thought that this would be a great place to spend an anniversary or have a meal with a few close friends. But after this encounter, I would not recommend the Red House to anyone."
