Gallo Nero is the new hidden gem of Hell's Kitchen. Located on 44th Street, between 9th & 10th Avenues, Gallo Nero has the great promise of becoming a new breed of tratoria with an exceptional wine selection. It's rustic feel is in tune with the wine and the friendly service only makes the place a very lovely spot, perfect for romantic dinners all the way to friendly reunions. The menu consists of a variety of items that are made to compliment every kind of taste, starting with cold cuts, Crostini, Bruschetta and cheese selections, all the way to Lamb Shank, Gnocchi and Panini. To top it all off the wines are picked from the special small vineyards in Italy, bringing a unique flavor to the area that will turn anyone into a wine lover.

"The problem I had was with the menu. I had expected an Italian restaurant, if not the usual standards one finds everywhere, but only half the dishes seemed truly Italian. Yes, I know that Italians eat roast chicken but I can go anywhere for that, perhaps not prepared as well, perhaps better. But I had gone to this restaurant for Italian food, and if you subtract all those dishes that one doesn't normally find everywhere, there wasn't all that much that was Italian in this Italian restaurant.
I'm sure others would disagree, as this is a quality restaurant, and although it wasn't what I had anticipated, it was still a delicious meal and I'd certainly go back."

"The atmosphere in the restuarant was great; the service was excellent unfortunately the food was just ok. Myself and another friend got the linguine and white clam sauce and it was horrible. The sauce was brown, the noodles were far from al dente and the flavor was bad. The good part is 2 others from our group enjoyed their meals. I would recommend this place but would suggest to stay away from the linguine and clam sauce."

I had visited this same place a few days earlier but was turned away - so it can be popular; mostly because of it's proximity to the theatre district.
Winelist is a mid-range list, but it generally works well."

"Salumi selection is always veryyyyy good, especially to pair with one of the excellent wines they propose. I prefer the meat than the fish for the main course but all is very good. Service very friendly, smiley, attentive. The restaurant is more crowdy at night that at lunch, obviously, but I like to go for lunch, watch Italian TV with the owner and eat good salumi, sometimes with a good glass of wine. Not far from the tourist area, but not too touristy because a bit aside from Broadway routes. To me, the perfect neighbourhood gem..."

"We dined at Gallo Nero prior to attending a show on a Friday night. We arrived a bit early for our reservation and were seated immediately which we appreciated even though the restaurant was relatively empty. The rest of the visit was not as pleasing. We were rushed through our meal which was mediocre. When we asked for the chocolate soufflé for dessert we were told that it is not served until later in the evening - a fact not disclosed on the menu and perhaps related to their practice of rushing diners through their meals in order to turn over the tables. We left and went to a bar down the street where we ordered dessert and after dinner drinks - money we would have spent at Gallo Nero. Too many other good places to go in NY."

"This is such a marvelous little neighborhood restaurant. The staff are so polite and friendly, you could even call them sweet. They were very generous with their time and their smiles, and they even gave us limoncello gratis at the end of our meal. The food was good and hearty and the wine list was extensive, all Italian. The ambiance is absolutely gorgeous, so comforting, like an Italian country lounge room. On the whole a very romantic little restaurant, with outstanding service and delicious food. What more could you ask for?"

"Delicious food, terrific service, and pretty reasonably priced for New York. Gallo Nero is a charming find in the theatre district. It was a bit noisy for our group of five, at least at 7pm on a Friday night, but I don't think that would be an issue if you were only 2 or 3 at a table. I'll definitely go again on my next trip to NY."

"We were almost an hour late for our reservation, and they still found a table for us (t helped that it was a Sunday evening). Food and service were wonderful, but menu with not as many typically Italian dishes as I would have expected. This was a great cozy find, and we will definitely return."

"This restaurant is great, food, service and atmosphere were wonderful. Pork scallopini was fantastic! My only warnings to others is that this is a small crammed little place so be prepared to get friendly with your table's neighbors. Also given these logistics had to wait a good 20 minutes after our reservation time for our table and there's no comfortable place to wait there. I just wish this restaurant would expand! The yummy food makes it worthwhile though."

"We went at 7pm on a Saturday evening. When we arrived, the place was full and we waited 15 minutes or so for a table. The host seemed very eager to please us and gave us menus immediately upon arrival. He told us 7pm was the worst time to make a reservation with all the theater goers. He also kept asking if we wanted wine while we waited.
The "theater goers" were in their 50s or so, but once the restaurant cleared out a 30something crowd filled in.
The food was delicious, but nothing that we've never experienced before - standard Italian fare. The service was interesting - half our table wanted sparkling water and the other half wanted tap so it caused confusion for the entire evening. We tried 4 of 5 desserts; go with the sou"

"Gallo Nero was an excellent restaurant prior to going to see a show. First and foremost, it is inexpensive for midtown. Entrees ranged from just below to just above $20. It is a small, tight space, but that did not bother the meal in any way. The lamb shank over wild rice was very good. My wife had risotto with porcini mushrooms which was also excellent. The wine is pricey which can add to the inexpensive food. However, the waiter was very knowledgeable about the wine and recommended a great glass of red that met my tastes and a Moscato that was the perfect sweetness for my wife. Overall a very good pre-theatre experience."
