Salut Bar Americain - St. Paul
Salut Bar Americain - St. Paul is the brasserie down the block. Warm and welcoming, with an urbane wit and urban sensibility, it’s an afternoon hangout and an evening refuge. It’s your neighbor with a French accent. The setting evokes a classic Parisian bistro/restaurant. The service is spirited, confident and capably executed. And the cooking captures the freshness and hearty flavor of French cuisine. It’s the vibe inside that sets Salut apart from bowing maitre ‘d’s and sniffing sommeliers. From the welcoming wine list, to the playful décor, to the genial buzz in the dining room, Salut celebrates the French restaurant’s essential qualities while dispensing with the exclusionary ones. It demystifies French food by making it accessible and rewarding while poking fun at the stereotypes that surround it. In this sense, Salut is a dual citizen: Authentically French! Reservations can be made for the dining room only. Sorry but we do not accept reservations for the patio.

"We loved the Mother's Day brunch. It was superb, even the poached eggs for the Eggs Benedict were perfect and still runny. I especially loved the brisket, it fell apart and melted, but the mini-burgers, the crepes, the sausage, the fruit and the pastries were all excellent!"

"My partner and I took a friend from Grand Forks, North Dakota to Salute. When we picked her up I raved and raved about how wonderful Salute on Grand Avenue is. None of us were disappointed at all. The night air was perfect and the patio alive with excitement and conversation. Andy sat us immediately and it was so good to see him again. Our server Kaylie couldn't have been more cordial and attentive. It was super busy but she never appeared rushed and took her time with our table.
The food by Chef Anthony and team was phenomenal and my friend couldn't stop saying what a wonderful time she had. It's all a part of what I call "Cafe Life". Sitting at a fabulous restaurant, good food and fantastic conversation and laughing."

"I decided to go to Salut with my significant other because they had fresh fish and I don't get enough of that in Minnesota (I'm from Boston). We knew it was pricy, but thought the food would be worth it. We ordered scallops and the pork loin. There were only 3 scallops, and they were gummy in consistency. The pork loin was good. The only dish that was exceptional was the mashed potatoes. The portions were too small and the food too average to warrant $25+ per entree."

"I wasn't crazy about the food...and the kiddie food was not eaten by the two children in our group (kids just want plain American cheese on their grilled cheese, not some fancy sharp cheddar that adults would appreciate). The kiddie burger was about the size of a button. The fish was not flavorful at all and was a bit overcooked (hate overcooked fish). The steak was good, I was told - not spectacular, but good. Scallops weren't appreciated by two in our group, but the duck was wonderful. It's a very noisy place, so have to talk loudly to be heard."

"I have always loved Salut. This last visit was a colossal disappointment, though. I had an out of town guest with me who was speaking at our university and the service was AWFUL. I've always thought the service was terrific there, otherwise I would not have brought someone from out of town to sample St. Paul at Salut but WOW, this particular waiter was snarky, actively ignoring us, and incredibly slow with order taking and checking up (the latter of which he actually did not do). "Our first time at this restaraunt! Fell in love! Great ambiance, very very friendly staff. Luscious, descriptive menu. Wonderful appetizers and "tastings" from the chef. We spent a long time trying to decide what to order, and were helped by our waiter who let us know that the scallops were a seasonal dish and would not be around for much longer. So of course that is what we ordered! Amazing! We agreed that we MUST go back and soon, in order to further educate our palates. Desert was unexpectedly sumptious. We thought a simple ice cream sandwich would be a nice way to end the meal. Who knew we would get an extremely addictive treat that would feed 3 people! All in all a great experience. This one goes on our REPEAT list! Thanks"

"Lobster thermador came out cold. Manager was kind and provided a complimentary dinner and a couple drinks. Service was fair considering it did not seem that busy. Took too long to get bread and drinks and not much follow up between server visits. Nice ambiance."

"We were looking for someplace special for a birthday. Salut fit the bill. They were very busy but we were seated right away. Our waitress had just finished training and it may have been her first Friday night. My wife had the walleye poached in paper. I had the Classic Flatiron steak. We both enjoyed our meals and found something surprisingly tasty to enjoy. We started with the crispy brie with fig jam. That was Stupendous. For dessert we split an apple desert with ice cream. Not devistating sort of doughy but good none the less and a good way to finish a very nice meal."

"It's a little loud and mostly void of booths but once you get beyond that, it's a fantastic food and drink experience. The house drinks are seriously terrific and the food is adventurous and done just the way it should be. As a first timer to this place but not a first timer to other French restaurants I'd say Salut is worth the drive."

"My wife and I enjoyed our lunch. They were most accommodating as my wife wanted an item off the dinner menu which they willingly provided. Portions were a bit small for the price by the quality was very good. My wife would have preferred a half duck instead of just the breast. I would have enjoyed more lettuce in my Cobb Salad. Both items were quite good. Cocktails were great. We also enjoyed our appetizers of escargot and we used a 'three-salad' sampler entree as an additional appetizer. For an entree, the sampler could have been larger, but it was an excellent value."

"I liked the offerings on the menu, but I do wish, like with most restaurants in the Twin Cities, that the tables were a bit farther apart so we could have a little bit more privacy. I love the bread at the tables, but I will skip the brussels sprouts in the future. It seemed like they were just grilled and not caramelized like advertised. I will definitely be back for the ice cream sandwich; it was divine."

"We'd eaten here with two other couples a few months ago and I'd noted in the review that all was good except our table had been placed in such a way that I was often jostled by servers and patrons as they walked through the restaurant. To my surprise, the manager sent me an email, apologizing for the experience and an invitation to return and give them a other chance. He attended the offer with a gift card and not being a fool we revisited this past weekend with a other at of friends. Everything was most satisfactory. The server was attentive yet gave us plenty of time to converse and catch up. The drinks and wine were good and the food was excellent. We'll be back and without the inducement of a gift card"
