"My wife and I really enjoy dining at Jax for the seafood. This last visit was to celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary. We were treated royally even though we did not mention the special occasion. Will we go back? Absolutely!"

"Best calamari we've ever gad. Mango arugula salad great, delicious dressing. All the entrees were great, we had four. First time I ever had someone fillet a fish before my eyes for me. Everything was cooked to perfection. Key lime pie was delicious. Noise level is a little high. Our waitress was wonderful. Pricey."

"My husband and I had a really great dinner here on a busy Friday night. We got there in time to enjoy a bit of their happy hour specials before it ended. I wish they could offer west coast oysters on their happy hour menu for $1.25, because the east coast ones were ok, but not briny enough for my taste. They were pretty bland. Anyway, the food overall was great and everything came to our table in the right amount of time. The service was a bit overzealous about clearing the table - our waiter cleared my husband's cocktail glass without asking if he was finished and he really wasn't. He also whisked away the wine list before we could stop him. Just little things like that, not a big deal, but it would have been nicer if the waiter had asked."

"The service was excellent. The staff was attentive. Our party tasted several dishes and enjoyed the variety. First time there, so no favorites at this time. Even though it was noisy, we were able to converse and be heard. Our birthday person was treated to a candle with dessert."

"Had a 5:00 reservation for four on a Friday. Was predictably very active and noisy upon arrival. Got seated maybe 10 minutes after 5:00 apparently due to a late-leaving party; no big deal. After getting seated near the rear of the restaurant, it was much quieter and the noise level was not really an issue, as many had predicted. Service was very good, though our waiter seemed to forget us for bits of time. The food was also very good; nice, cold beers and excellent oysters. Everyone's entrees were very good, including the lobster roll, trout, scallops, and seared tuna. Desserts were excellent, including the beignets and keylime pie."

"Jax's is high noise, high volume, very small, very expensive. The food is good, but not as great as they make it out to be. When we asked about the lobster, the waiter said, "We've been in business for 18 years - it's delicious and flown in fresh every day." Well, o.k., so we tried it. It was served lukewarm and kind of rubbery. Not worth the over $30 price. The ceviche was great, so was the bread. Good wines well matched to the food. Good, if abrupt, service. And mainly - NOISY, so loud you can hardly hear your dining partner. Fun, no doubt, to sit at the bar and eat oysters and drink beer - they probably do that best. I will try a less crowded seafood house next time - there are several wonderful ones in Denver."

"The calamari was undercooked, and that was a redo, which they did without hesitation. For some reason, the oysters were not as good as they usually are, although it was nice to have them for half off. The mussel soup, the special for the day, was above average, but not quite to the quality that Jax has demonstrated in the past. Finally, a very minor quibble but not insignificant, the beer was $4 during Happy Hour, which is $1 more than it should be, in my estimate. Maybe it was just a bad day for the restaurant."

"Jax never fails to satisfy. The oysters are fantastic, as are the mussels. On this particular happy hour visit, the noise level was much lower than usual despite the fact that the restaurant was full. We're coming back within the week, and bringing some folks for their first visit to Jax."

"We were disappointed in the food unfortunately. The mussels were bland, the lobster in the lobster roll rubbery, but the scallops were good. We expected everything to be a lot more tasty given Jax reputation. We also thought the prices were high but that is how Boulder is now. Sorry we don't have better things to say."

"Jax has always been one of our favorites in Boulder. This dinner didn't live up to what I've come to expect and enjoy at Jax. We waited close to an hour and a half for a table (the hostess admitted to forgetting about us) and the servers made us feel less like guests and more of an annoyance. The food was great but not the experience. There are so many gems in Boulder...we'll be spending our evenings out in a more enjoyable setting."

"Jax used to be one of our favorite places to go ion Boulder but we were quite disappointed with our last visit. First, they were out of the oysters that we ordered and the waiter up-sold us on the replacement. Then we they were out of the wine that we wanted and we were again up-sold. The entrees were average at best. I had the pasta Neri and I think it had two pieces of calamari in the whole dish and it was way over-spiced. My daughter had the tuna, which used you to be their best dish, and it was bland, bland, bland. We ended up plunking down about $300 for the 4 of us, which was way too much for what we got. I guess we will have to find another favorite fish restaurant in Boulder."

"I brought my mother to Jax while she was visiting me in Boulder, "Mom, Jax is a MUST". The times I have been to Jax before have been absolutely amazing, this occasion included. The waiter was absolutely outstanding, constantly checking in with us and making our night even more enjoyable. My mother and I had PLENTY of oysters, but oh my god, they were so worth it. Their seafood is always exceptional. My friend ordered the catfish which was blackened and just delicious. I was born and raised from the Midwest. I am usually pretty picky about my catfish and how it is cooked..let me just say that I would honestly come back and order the catfish again. We came during a snow storm while business was slow and Jax was just as wonderful as ever."

"Food and service has been excellent on three separate visits over 5 years. Restaurant each visit was EXTREMELY CRAMPED AND UNCOMFORTABLE. Tables set parallel approximately 8" apart. Very noisy, easier to have conversation with stranger sitting shoulder to shoulder to you than with your dinner partner. In my opinion, at least triple or more the density of diners than any other restaurant I've seen in 40 years of eating in most every restaurant to come and go in Boulder. Would come much more often, and pay higher price, if space had some atmosphere and comfort rather than feeling packed like a rush hour subway car. This dinner was weekend evening after Valentines Day, but other visits ahve been weeknites, with same cramped experience"

"Hopping place, even at 5:30 PM on Friday. Seated right away. Server was "perfect", making sure we knew we were appreciated! (and did so without emoting) Food is always top notch here, seafood with an eclectic twist. This restaurant, and JAX in LODO are our favorite seafood places in the metro area."

"Our family of 3 was in Boulder and I made reservation to a few restaurants in town way in advance. Day before we confirmed reservation and 2 hours before our dinner time got a call from Jax for another confirmation. It didn't really help to get a table on time. We were waiting for 40 min to be seated. The restaurant is really small and there is no place to wait, so we were just standing at the entrance with people bumping into us and hostess talking on the phone and looking at us without any enthusiasm. We ordered grilled trout and it was very good. Drinks (I had absolute martini) were mediocre- not very cold and olives were laying on the bottom of the glass. There were no "atmosphere" to speak of and service wasn't very attentive"

"I had been looking forward to going to Jax after reading about it and hearing about it from friends, but I was disappointed. There was nothing wrong, but it was overpriced and not particularly special. My husband and I shared 6 of the cooked oyster starters. They were not all that great and overpriced at $3.50 a piece. Our friends shared a salad that looked good, although they did not comment one way or the other. Among the four of us we had two orders of the sea scallop special and two orders of the trout special. They were tasty, but I thought that three scallops was a very small main course serving. The whole trout was quite good and the kale side was very good. What little liquor we consumed was very expensive."

"I was disappointed that we had to wait for our table after making a reservation. Then we had a two-top smack in the middle of the restaurant, not 12 inches from the next table. Not exactly the ambiance I was looking for on this special date. It also was quite noisy so it was hard to have a conversation without shouting, and with the couple 12 inches from us at the next table, I didn't really want to do that.
The food was terrific and well balanced. The wine list could benefit from an update.
But when all is said and done, after dropping $140, and only $22 of it was for a 1/2 bottle of wine, I felt a bit ripped off."
