In 2007, we opened Casa Oaxaca in Washington, D.C., a traditional restaurant that brings the flavors and colors of Mexico to the capital city of U.S.
Our main objective is to give Washingtonians a better exposure to the richness and diversity of Mexican cuisine.
At Casa Oaxaca, mole sauces are our specialty and we have six types that you will be able to taste with chicken, beef, seafood or tortillas.
"I had heard good things about Casa Oaxaca. I was disappointed, mainly because I reserved for six and they put us in the corner of the ground floor (I guess the main floor is being renovated). The food was good enough...maybe a tad bit pricey...and the service was adequate, but I'd wait until they reopen the main floor. The ground floor is suitable for frat boys and their loud drinking which, by the way, we experienced also."

"service was great, food was outstanding (best fish tacos i've ever had). we had a screaming child at a table nearby and the staff was accommodating and moved us to a table in the back. Get's pretty noisy as the place fills up but I hear the upstairs is quieter."

"My wife is vegetarian and I follow a vegan diet. We both ate very well! The vegan options on the menu were creative and full-flavored. Gluten free options were all marked GF. It was so refreshing to find a Mexican restaurant that served more than just meat. Our Cinco de Mayo dinner was a lot of fun and very tasty. It was well worth the drive in from suburban Virginia."

"The food, as always, was excellent. We especially appreciated their vegan menu items and were particularly impressed by the ancho chili relleno. A roasted pepper appetizer, while delicious was disappointing in terms of bang for the buck - two skinny peppers, with nothing else, for $7. Much better were the cactus fries. I've always found the service to be very friendly and fun. We had trouble with parking and were about 15 minutes late for our reservation. But, they still managed to seat us within less than 5 minutes of arriving (and the restaurant was full). It's a gem."

"This was our first time at Casa Oaxaca. Very impressed with the food. And the service was quite good. The lower level was super noisy, though, mostly because of a couple large groups. Made conversation difficult. We didn't mention it, though the hostess came over to apologize. Open Table's scale should say "noisy" and not "energetic," by the way. Call it what it is."

"Fresh/refreshing take on Mexican. Very "mole" focused menu but don't let that deter you! They have about 6 different types of mole and our server hooked us up with a tasting of each of the moles before we ordered. Our entrees were perfectly prepared. Oh and some of the best margaritas I've tasted in DC ... even better than L'Oreal's."

"I am in the food business and am o former restauranteur. When we arrived, we were informed that we were not on the reservation list. It was quickly handled though, and we were seated at a nice two top upstairs. It took over seven minutes before we were greeted. The standard is one minute, but my service staff was trained to be there as they were being seated or within 30 seconds. Although the waiter was very friendly and quite knowledgeable, he was swamped and in the weeds. When he was at our table, he did all the right things from explaining the menu to bringing a plate of the mole sauces for my wife to try. Their food runner was excellent and did the best he could, but what they needed was one more server upstairs. The food was authent"

"Mexican American, yes. Oaxacan regional, no. The service, ok. The menu was nothing but pedestrian. Offering a decent mezcal & mole selection doesn't qualify your eatery as authentic. The horchata, too sweet. The agua fresca offerings, too limited. The mole was savory but a touch too salty. I was disappointed that they failed to have more classic prepartions such as a warm atole for a cold evening. I was equally dismayed by the lack of dishes featuring the most classic of Oaxacan & Mexican ingredients such as nopales, huitlacoche & chapulines. The cajeta was bovine milk based. Not the traditional goat milk. Desserts, unimaginative. The waiter informed me that the house can't deviate too far with authenticity despite the chef's pedigee"

"Their menu offers authentic Oaxacan dishes of all kinds, excellently prepared; and their assorted mole sauces are a delight. Ask for a taste of each of them, to choose your favorite!"

"Good Mexican food with a large selection of Molé available. Options for vegetarians somewhat limited, but the veggie tacos were quite good. Also recommend the meat Molé Platter for a nice sampler. The service was top notch."

"I was excited to try because it was designated as good for gluten-free dining on various web sites. I would have liked more choices, especially among the Moles. Because there were not many options, I created a dinner out of appetizers, including Queso Fundido Con Chorizo and plantains. At other restaurants, the former has come with chips. But here, it came with three small corn tortillas that would not come close to accommodating the cheese. I asked for chips because I didn't want to a dinner of hunks of congealed, formerly melted cheese. They communicated that I was wrong for asking. I tried this restaurant thinking it would be my favorite neighborhood restaurant, but it was not."

"My party got a pitcher of the Mezcal Margaritas, the Tamal Oaxaqueño, Tres Moles, two Enchiladas De Camaron Y Queso De Cabra, the Pastel Tres Leches, and the Flan De Chocolate. We all thoroughly enjoyed our food! It was delicious!"

"Worthy examples of Oaxacan regional cuisine. Tres Moles, dark, green and red moles on chicken, is a great dish for mole pros and first-timers. Upgrade your Margaritas, the house level was a little too sweet, weak on the tequila. Service was fun and fast. The restaurant failed to credit our Open Table reservation, but a follow up email from Open Table cleared the problem."

"My husband and I are vegans, and this was our second annual visit to this restaurant for their special meat-free week menu. We also go occasionally throughout the year for their regular vegan offerings - a small but outstanding section of the menu! In our experience, their dishes have always been creative and delicious. They also have a small but excellent list of Mexican and other wines."

"Casa Oaxaca offers a wide variety of traditional Mexican delicacies that are hard to find in other restaurants. They offer 6 different types of mole which are all delicious...especially the Black Mole! An assortment of other goodies on the menu makes it very hard to pick your entree :)"

"It appears to be a small restaurant with little to no pretensions. You might feel as though you were really in Mexico. The chips and guacamole were very good and the green chiliquiles were very good. They offered a wine I had had in Mexico the week before and was surprised and delighted to find. Seems to be a place for the 20 somethings, however, I would definitely go back and bring my 60 something friends too. I just liked the atmosphere immediately!"

"Casa Oaxca is a gem of a Mexican restaurant. The food is fantastic, we started with basic chips, guac and salsa, but wow was the guac crisp and fresh, while the salsa had an unbelievable flavor. I ordered the Red Mole Coloradito steak with black beans and cheese corn, all three were excellent. My friend had the Ahi with Black Mole (their specialty as a Oaxcan restaurant)and he had nothing but praise. While the sangria was a bit to watery, the margaritas we got were balanced and well made. The service was average, taking a bit to long to greet us and offer drinks, which he then had to double check, but it improved from there and was good. The atmosphere is nice and what you'd expect from a nicer place. I highly recommend going to visit!"

"We enjoyed the food at Casa Oaxaca; however, the service was underwelming. We were there on a busy Saturday night, and we felt rushed by the waitress to order. Our biggest complaint though was when we asked for chips and salsa and were informed that we had to purchase an order of guacamole to get the chips and salsa. We looked around the room and everyone else seemed to have chips and salsa with no guacamole in sight."

"Both the food and the service at Casa Oaxaca can be described as mediocre. When we arrived the waiting area was jam packed and we were not able to speak to the hostess for several minutes. Our waiter was nice but not particularly efficient. After ordering any portion of the meal we had to wait upwards of 10 minutes for its delivery, including drinks and flag our server down in order to order. The food was not particularly impressive and arrived somewhat cold with overly sweet sauces and bland side dishes. The flavored margaritas were awful and tasted like kool-aid."

"The service began very slow but picked up as the dinner progressed. The Tres Moles was a real hit. A taste of three different moles with chicken as was the mole verde. The churros were good if a little greasy. This crowded litttle restaurant is great but not for those seeking a quiet or romantic meal."
