New toque Joe Marcus (formerly of Picholine) is only the third chef in the more than 30-year history of the restaurant. Mr. Marcus’s Contemporary American menu features dishes such as stuffed zucchini flowers with smoked ricotta and tomato-fennel sauce, and pan-seared scallops with smashed peas, prosciutto, and preserved lemon emulsion. Complementing the food is an award-winning California-focused wine list and a comfortable interior that includes the downstairs Laurie Beechman Theater, an 80-seat performance and private party space.

"West Bank has been in the same location for 31 years, but this was my first time, and I loved it. We went for lunch before a theater matinee, so didn't sample the wines, but loved the food. All of the lemon ricotta pancakes, broiled shrimp on fennel and grapefruit, and butternut squash gnocchi in brown butter were wonderful. The atmosphere is nice as well, and the prices were very reasonable. I would recommend it to anyone."

"I was pleasantly surprised by the very high quality of the food here. The rack of lamb special I had was outstanding as was the seafood gumbo. I also appreciated the "special" wine selections- solid 6 ounce pours with a quality of good wines to choose from. It's a great pre-theater spot if you're on the way to the Signature down the street as I was to meet my friend Barry. The tables are close together so "private" dining isn't really possible- I guess that's why they call it a "cafe". The food, though, rises way above that description. I'd return."

"This was the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant, and this one in particular which I have been eating at since it opened in 1980. As it was my birthday my friends asked for a candle in our dessert. It arrived without the candle. When my friend complained we were told the dessert we ordered didn't work with a cande - then to prove it, the managers arrived with the candle, stuck it in the half eaten dessert and laughed when it fell over. When asked to leave our table, they just stood there.

The food and waitress had been fine to that point - the waitress was reassigned to a large party mid meal and the service declined dramatically. Won't return to this restaurant without a personal apology from the managers."

"The food was delicious but the lunch selection could have been more comprehensive. Appetizers and dishes for the table were truly great. Went on Saturday for pre-theater brunch/lunch only to find out they only serve Brunch on Sunday. Oh well. Enjoyed it just the same."

"I was outraged by the insistence that diners could not just order an appetizer for dinner but that the chef said that one had to order one entree and a salad or two appetizers. The food was okay- not great. Certainly has slid over the years and the attitude is essentially not customer friendly. The "stinky cheese pla"te was a terrible selection and presented poorly. It is not the only pre theater game in that vicinity. I would not dine there again."

"Do not, do NOT go here on a Saturday night, particularly pre-theatre. You will be packed in like sardines, the wait staff will be overloaded and you will have trouble hearing someone talk across the table from you. You will have to move your chair and possibly the table every time someone near you enters or leaves their table. The food was great, but the meal was not.

I bet this place could be great on a Monday or Tuesday at 7pm or so."

"I thought the food and the place was uneventful. The food was ordinary...boring. The service was not great. We had a 3pm show to get to our reservation was at 12:30 walked to show with about 15 min leedway... A guest of mine ordered the French Toast and got it very very very well done but had no recourse because we had the show (the server offered nothing). Would not go back nor recommend!"

"very disappointing.i specifically mentioned upon booking thru open table that i wanted a separate table notbanquet or line up seating.....of course, we walked in and they gave us a table that waslined up, very close to tables on both sides of us.....our waiter couldn't care less about pleasing us...we ordered wine and asked for warm bread. waiter's answer was "once you place your order, you will get your bread serving.....this was unacceptable..i asked for the bread before we ordered. much to his dismay, he reluctantly brought it to us.food was nothing to rave about, limited menu, etc, etc.....this was not a cafeteria; West End Cafe in my opinion was only interested in getting you in and out fast...very disappointing."

"The West Bank Cafe has a great pre-theatre buzz. The room was packed on Saturday night and along with the ambience there was very good food, and excellent service from a staff who knows how to get the tables out the door on time for the show without rushing them or getting stressed themselves. I would recommend the salmon and the frozen lemon mousse. The caesar salad was passable but not great. I had read reviews for this spot and found the experience exceeded my expectations. If I was a local, I can see it being a regular pre-theatre dining spot."

"Dinning experience was mediocre, as usual.
But it is convenient to go to the theater accross the street. So one tolerates poor service, mediocre food (pan seared fish with sea molusks broth and fried potatos "in the broth" -yeakk-) small tables jammed in a noisy place with a very busy waiter who does not pay much attention to you. You have to navigate the menu and try a few items over time to sort our what is eadible. In a cold winter night you may want to use the place to fend yourself against inclement weather. With better weather I do not know many people who want to put up with reservationist attitude and mediocre food. The decor is overdue for a make over, so is the floor showing lack of maintenace, abuse of traffic over time."

"My daughter and I were going to the theatre, and I went on line to find a restaurant nearby - she is usually the one who searches. I immediately found West Bank Cafe and, being short on time, made reservations thinking that I could always change them. I then proceeded to read the countless enthusiastic reviews and realized that I had been lucky. When we got there (half an hour late, due to Lincoln Tunnel traffic - I did call to say that I would be late) we were put at a nice table (I'm not sure there are bad ones) where we proceeded to have a) delicious glasses of wine, b) delicious dinners, c) delicious rice pudding, and d) wonderful service from our very helpful waiter. Can't wait to go back."

Some benefits for memberships in theater groups (free glass of house wine), great Cobb salad, interesting baked salmon, excellent salmon tartare. "Hands-down the best linguini with clams I've ever had! The pasta was handmade and cooked to al-dente perfection, the clams sweet and succulent, the pancetta crispy and flavorful, and everything blended perfectly in the sauce. My fiance ordered the striped bass special which was delicious, as were the caprese salad, salmon tar tar, and even the bread was top-notch!

"West Bank Cafe is right across the street from my apt. bldg. so it is the most convenient nice restaurant especially in this very cold weather. We had a very nice dinner. I had veal cutlet with lemon sauce and my friend had roast chicken both were very good. I also had a delicious salad with endive and nuts in a lovely dressing. This is definitely a find in the Hells Kitchen neighborhood."

"The only reason to eat here is convenience to the many off-Broadway theaters at 42nd & 9th. Also, a lot of actors seem to come here after their shows, so you might catch a star or two. Food is mediocre and overpriced for what you get. Also, kitchen is completely inflexible about substitutions requested by diners (although they had no problem leaving the promised swiss chard off my plate because they were out.) This kind of stuff is annoying. Best to just get a drink here and bar food."

"My husband and I had the theater at 8 p.m., which our waitress knew when we arrived for our 6 p.m. reservation. We had to wait a bit to get menus - they didn't have enough - but we ordered appetizers and meals. The appetizers arrived by 6:20, 6:30, my guess. But when our meal didn't arrive by 7 p.m., we had to catch our waitress' eye and ask her what happened. She checked and told us it was coming, the kitchen was overwhelmed. The hostess/manager came over at 7:15, and said the food was coming. Our dinners did not arrive until 7:30. We sent back the mac' and cheese we had ordered because we knew we wouldn't be able to finish in time, because we were rushing, as it was. More to tell, they did not comp us to a drink while we were waiting..."

"We booked this restaurant for pre-theater early dinner and was very pleased with both food and service. Pricing was very reasonable for selections (Salmon dish was beautifully presented and tasty!). This restaurant has an upbeat vibe to it and might be a little noisy for some, but we enjoyed the feel of it. Small and tables are very close together. Will return here and recommend to friends."

"My aunt and uncle were in town to see a matinee and I needed to find a brunch spot in the Theater District. I was not too optimistic that I'd find something non-touristy with good food, so I was cautiously happy to come across good reviews for West Bank Cafe. I was delighted with our experience there. We all enjoyed our food, our server was warm and friendly, and the complimentary smoothies were a lovely touch. Even the bread in the table basket was great. I would recommend West Bank Cafe to anyone looking for a great dining experience in Hells Kitchen."

"Thoroughly enjoyed our luncheon experience. Able to have table conversation without raising our voices. The entire staff were exceedingly accommodating. Unfortunately the only negative is an entire row of tables on the other side of the bar that are really too close together. "I hesitate to say how much I like this restaurant for fear that reservations will be difficult to get and the prices will rise. I have eaten here twice, both times pre theater. The service was terrific, the wait staff inquired if we were going to the theater and asked when our curtain was. Service was prompt, but not rused. The food is outstanding. I rarely order fish because most restaurants do it poorly. On both ocasions, impressed by what I saw on neighboring tables I did, and am so glad. The salads are big enough to share, and fresh and deslicious. All the main courses were excellent, better than at restaurants twice the price. The tarte tatin was outstnding. The place was packed but the service and food excellent. A mystery!"

"We had a wonderful experience as always. We go the West Bank Cafe every year on our anniversary and it has never disappointed! "We had a 6:30 reservation, however, we arrived 1/2 hour early and our table was not quite ready. We found a seat at the bar and it was so comfortable there that we decided to dine there and give up our table. It was A+ all the way around from the ambiance, food and service. "The Service was horrible. We came in at 6:15 waited for drinks. had to flag down our waitress to order. We were going to the theater around the corner, thank goodness, at 8pm. We kept being told it was coming right up! At 7:35 our dinners arrived as we were about to leave altogether. We ate fast, got a check, and ran. The food was good but I have never had such awful service."

"Overall, a very good meal. Vegetables were done perfectly, the seasonal vegetable platter was an excellent blend of roasted squash, chinese forbidden rice and sauteed greens. The shrimp and scallops were cooked perfectly. Chocolate mousse cake was a surprise - the description made it sound over the top but it was spot on. The taffioca pudding was a bit too sweet - the only bummer out of 3 appetizers, 3 dinners and 2 dessers. Service was attentive and if you are attending a show, they will do everything to get you out on time. Would definitely go back."

"Food choices were very slim, although what they did have was very good. Wine list was way over priced!!!!! if your not concerned about what you want to eat and deal with only 3 or so choices then go here, if your like me and would like just a bit more variety then due search out some place else."
