Carmine's simple and very popular concept is to serve every meal in the style of an Italian American wedding feast - which means large portions of home-style antipasti, pastas, seafood and meat entrees served on large platters designed for sharing. And when we say large, we mean large. An entree here could easily feed three to four average eaters. Located in a sprawling, former grand ballroom on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, this is the original Carmines. Designed by Peter Niemitz, the interiors evoke the images of the quintessential New York restaurant. With elements and details from the 1920s to the 1940s, the restaurant has the look and feel of a place that has been around for much longer than it's 1990 opening. If you are in the market for freshly prepared family style Italian food that is served in huge portions at reasonable prices, this is the place for you.
"As always the food was phenomenal! Each time we go we try a different entree and have not been disappointed yet, the food just gets better and better."

"I knew the noise level would be high, but I expected much bettter food that would compensate for the noisy ambiance. It was thoroughly average. The service was a bit fawning but basically OK. I had not been to Carmine's in several years, and this experience did not match my memory of the previous meal. Given the quality of the food, the prices were very high. The wine was good."

"I have been here many times with large groups but this time I feel like the food (portion and quality) were just not good. At one time I loved coming here and have recommended Carmine's to friends, but not anymore."

"Been there before- always "good" food- always overpriced- even for the family style size portions. The bread is averagwe, the calarmari is average, the chicken parm is barely average, the one really good thing is the salmon special with seafood. DONT get the prime rib "special"- worst I ever had and for 75. the dish. We should have sent it back- all fat, couldnt get one good bite-some was overcooked and some raw- and we asked for medium. The one amazing thing and probably the best thing about carmines is the ricotta (italian) cheese cake."

"Had a really lovely meal with my wife and a friend. The servings are huge, so best to go as part of a group - the 3 of us barely made a dent in the food. Great service though and we felt well looked after."

"I love Carmine's, especially when I have friends and family in town. The atmosphere is fun and lively, the space is big enough to accomodate large parties without being right on top of each other, service is always friendly and the Lemon Chicken is to DIE FOR!!"

"great place to meet and eat with friends and family...waiters are always accommodating..we had a toddler who was happily enjoying the whole scene...the food is excellent..and let's me entertain visitors w'o feeling guilty that I didn't prepare it myself..they'd rather eat out anyway since it's NYC and not have me exhausted."

"As always Carmine's hit it again. Another homerun. Where else can 4 people kill this much food. A platter of Cesar Salad, 1 of Veal Parm, 1 of Chicken Marsala (best in the world), 1 of Chicken Scarp. and 1 of Pasts Ragu. Can't wait till the next time I hit the city. You know Carmine's will be in the plans."

"They overcharge me in my credit card and later on they said they could not do anything about it. I ended up paying more and with a lot of trouble to get my money back. Food was good but the problems I had and the way the restaurant managed it ruined the whole experience. Staff should be better trained and the menager be more aware of the customers needs."

"Made a reservation and was seated right away. However, there were many empty tables but we were squished between a very large family with screaming kids and 3 other full tables. Our table was shaky and people kept slamming their chairs into our own. It took 20 minutes to be served. Food was great but when it came time for the check it took 30 minutes to get it. Our waiter's excuse: "we were trying to keep you here longer but I know you have to go." Large portions that were delicious!"

"As always Carmine's delivered a delicious meal but I did wish that the waiter would have instructed us a little more when ordering knowing how many people were at our table. Even though it's family style when you order the chicken Parm you would think it would be more than two cutlets on the dish (we thought it would have been at least four). So that was a bit disappointing but other than that it was good."

"I had heard many things about Carmine's (all good things) but it doesn't compare to actually going. All the food was great, even the dishes that went by to other tables looked incredible. I will definitely be going again and will highly recommend it to anyone"

"You'd think Carmine's could easily handle a 10 person group? We were wrong. First, our table wasn't ready. Had to wait 20 minutes. And this was in the middle of the day on Saturday, not at a peak time. After we were seated, no one served us. We weren't even given menus. After another 20 minutes, I had to ask for a waiter to serve us. Our waiter showed little interest in us, and got several orders wrong. Eventually, after complaining again, he was replaced by someone else more capable, but by that time, our experience was pretty well set. As to the food? Nothing to write home about. The wine was overpriced, and the food was over salted. I've often been part of large groups going to Carmine's, but I cannot see us going back."

"We go here everytime my in-laws visit from the UK because they LOVE it. The food is good - solid with no frills. The service is always excellent and they are always good with our kids so when it's a group of us it is perfect. You are also served promptly which is also a plus when you have a toddler or two in tow. Good fun casual dining."

"I met my wife and daughter for lunch on a weekday. We are used to the midtown and bustling Carmines in Times Square. Since they had be on the Upper West Side, we decided to try the original Carmines. What a great time we had. Food was great, waiter was tremendous and just a wonderful long lunch. Thanx again. Can't wit to return."

"I really enjoyed my visit to Carmines. The service was good and the atmosphere was inviting. We ordered the fried calamari (awesome flavor and portion size), shrimp scampi (very skimpy for the price), spaghetti and meatballs, chicken parm, veal parm and it all tasted great. This restaurant to have finnet is kid friendly as they even checked our stroller at the coat check area. Very good place to have dinner with the family."

"This location, like its sister restaurant in the Theater District, was fantastic. Our table was ready when we arrived. The food was favorful, hot and delicious. The menu is varied with different foods available in beef, chicken, veal and seafood. The pasta choices are large. Since the food is served family-style, one dish is enough for two. Groups can really try a variety of foods, but be careful not to over-order! I have recommended Carmines for years to many folks when they come to New York. Everyone quickly agrees this is their favorite New York Italian restuarant."
