"I rarely give negative feedback but for the price of this restaurant and having been there before I was very disappointed by the decrease in the quality of the food. Really too bad as the location is optimal."

"The restaurant has seen better days. Decor was worn, the food was overpriced, and quality was just average. Service was good thought and the servers were helpful."

"We enjoy the older atmosphere of the Grotto. It's been around a long time and like the old time feel. You do have a view of the water, but not the most scenic. You can see the sun set. Lots of windows for viewing. We've gone in groups of 5 - 9 and were very pleased with our service and the food. We loved the fresh dungeness crab with garlic/olive oil. We'll certainly go back."

"We had a wonderful time. the cioppino was so delicious and I could hardly finish it. They also have red clam chowder which I like and is rare to find. The bread was delicious and the house wine was great. View and service couldn't be beat. We are locals and enjoyed it immensely."

"The evening began by encountering an absent maitre d'. When he finally did show up, he did not check his system for our reservation. We noticed that he was absent a lot after that, so couples would wander into the dining room on their own and choose their own table. Waiters would then find them without menus or wine lists. The next person we were faced with was a busboy/man with the nastiest expression on his face, as if he were suffering terribly. He delivered bread with a crust so hard that it hurt to chew. We missed the nice, soft sourdough bread we expected. Our waiter finally showed up and took our order for a clam chowder and crab dinner. One of us has cioppino and the other a crab louis. Service was slow and the food just OK."

"My bf & I arrived to what appeared to be a deserted restaurant. There were 2 other families & a couple waiting as well. My bf & I are actually both in the restaurant business & I could easily see the OpenTable floor plan & I was the ONLY reservation. Long story short, the host finally arrived & made us wait while the walk-ins were all seated. Um, FYI: Reservations take precedence over walk-ins. 15 minutes later we were seated to discover they had a room in back that was full! Not a good seating strategy. Long story short after FLAGGING down a waiter after 13 minutes of being seated with no drink orders asked, I ordered the combo seafood plate; food was COLD, but sauce on top was hot. Doesn't work like that. Service was spotty. Awful!"

"Very good food but on a Friday night with a 7:30 reservation, we didn't eat until almost 9PM. I can understand a bit of a wait due to larger crowds on Fridays, especially during Lent, but 1.5 hrs? C'mon. Food is fresh and very tatsy, but the service was a bit lacking and the wait for our food was pretty discouraging. With a smaller crowd, on a different night, I might go back.
Decor needs to be updated too. This place is old and drab. If they just pulled up the carpet and did hardwood throughout, it would go a long way."

"We went to the street level restaurant versus going to the more elegant surroundings of the upstairs. The restaurant was old and overly painted over with circus like colors. The vinyl bench seats were old with worn depressions and some minor tears. We went on a weekday at noon with plenty of tourists traffic outside. However, the restaurant was practically empty. A captain's jacketed bus person seated us and served our drinks. We had to wait 10 minutes for the server to take our orders (it still wasn't that busy). I wished we knew about the upstairs elegant part beforehand. It had better ambience & not as cheap-looking as downstairs. Anyway, the food was great and the customer service was pleasant, although a bit slow."

"Having dined here many times, we were surprised that our favorite garlic cracked crab was not very good. It was not up to par when we ate there earlier this year, but phenominally good when we dined there in December. We planned to bring friends there next month, but my wife is weary that it will be good."

"I had not been to the Fishermen's Wharf area for years and so had not seen Fishermen's Grotto in a very long time. Three of us went there for dinner on a weekday and I was dismayed to see the restaurant practically deserted. Dismayed because in its heyday, the Grotto was pretty grand and always crowded. As other reviewers have noted, the restaurant is quite dated, looks pretty rundown and could use an major facelift. Even so, I have to say we really enjoyed our dinner. The food was good, but what made our evening was the tremendous service our waiter gave us. He was entertaining but still professional, attentive but not intrusive. I'm not sure i would go again for dinner, but might stop by for lunch."

"This is absolutely a tourist trap. The service was almost non-existent. We waited for 15 minutes before someone actually took our order. The crab we ordered wasn't fresh. Will not come back."

"Total 50's throwback but still looks great with not much wear. It was like stepping back in time! Unfortunately the menu is still in the past and could use a modern update. I had the crab cakes that were good. Not great, just good. The sides consisted of penne pasta alfredo and some very boring and bland steamed vegetable medley. But you don't come here for some new innovative cuisine, you come here because you are a tourist or entertaining tourists. The white and red clam chowders are yummy and they serve San Francisco's signature sour dough bread. If you make a reservation, they'll hook you up with an awesome window seat."

"Friendly service. Seafood good but a little overcooked. Excellent dessert=limoncello, marscapone cake. Place is at the wharf and has a nice view but needs some sprucing up. Looks a little old and run down."

"FG #9 is about what you would expect from a restaurant that caters to the tourist population visiting Fisherman's Wharf. The restaurant's decor is very dated but the food is solid, if unspectacular. Our server was a veteran with first rate client service. The prices are expensive, as befits a tourist area. The views of the city and the Bay are great. All in all, FG #9 is fine if you set your expectations properly before you arrive."

"We went for my daughter's birthday. The waiters were very accommodating and let us move tables so that we could eat and watch the sun go down over the bay while we ate.
The crab dishes that we had were piled with crab- I assumed that as a restaurant in a tourist spot that the food would be mediocre, but it was tasty and abundant.
I went for the view and was happily surprised by the yummy dinner and friendly service!"

"The food was good and the view is great but the service ruined the experience for us. It took 20 minutes for a waiter to come to our table and that's because we had to ask someone. The waiter was then very rude and rushed us with our order. Go for the food not the service."

"We were seated next to a VERY loud group of around 8 people. I didn't think it was appropriate to seat couples near an obnoxious group. My husband and I could barely keep a conversation going because of the noisy vulgar group. However, the crab is always fresh and verrrryyy tasty! My husband says the clam chowder tastes like potato pot pie with clams (it is really thick). The server was really nice, but we had to ask for a couple things several times as he kept forgetting. But his politeness made up for it. We'll go back, but will request to sit away from groups."

"This place is in tourist central but it is so yummy!! The fish tacos are simple, light and delish! I'm hooked. I come here everytime I visit San Fran. There's loads of people watching too if you sit outside... There's nothing fancy about it but it really does put a smile on my face when I go."

"Took a while to get our table that we reserved and we didn't get a table with a view, which I requested. However we sat at the bar while we waited and had excellent service and conversation with the bartender. The service was good despite not getting the table we wanting and waiting a while for dinner."
