Known as San Francisco’s hidden gem, Gitane’s interior exhibits the sexy playfulness of a 1930’s cabaret, the swagger of Serge Gainsbourg, and the audacious spirit of the 70’s disco era. Chef team and husband and wife duo Bridget Batson and Patrick Kelly serve an updated contemporary Spanish menu that looks to Andalusia for gastronomic inspiration, spotlighting the southern regions of Spain. The menu changes seasonally to reflect the bounty of flavor profiles and distinctive regional influences from culinary-rich cities such as Seville, Andalusia to Valencia.
As of February 21st Gitane's tasting menu is shifting focus to Rioja with an amazing wine pairing to match. In other exciting news: Starting March 11th Gitane will be opening Mondays for dinner from 5:30 - 10:00 with and excluisive industry driven menu.

"I wanted a very special place to have dinner with my parents for my 24th birthday. My mom is a chef in Texas and is very peculiar about restaurants, but I knew that Gitane would not disappoint! The food was delicious as always, and my mother wouldn't stop talking about how good the food was. Success! We had an amazing dinner and we all left Gitane as a happy family!"

"Recent meals at Gitane have been consistently enjoyable with regional Spanish specialties that have interesting ingredients and are well prepared. Recent hits have included the salmonete appetizer and the pancetta rabbit with snails. Our groups have included friends/family bewtween the ages of 22 and 72, and all enjoy the energetic atmosphere and striking decor. Plus it's open later than most downtown restaurants."

"Great knowledgeable server regarding specialty cocktail selection, wines which weren't our local variety and entree choice questions. Highly recommend the Alcachofas/Artichokes appetizer, also had the Albondigas/Rabbit and Pork Meatballs. Entrees were both delish...the pancetta wrapped rabbit and the plump monkfish. The bar scene looked like a fun place to hang or even dine at. We had a great little triangular romantic table in the corner...great dining room atmoshphere and a nice spot for 'Date Nite'!"

"Five people dined on the tasting menu. Starters were tastless as was the quail and lamb. Desert was fine. Asked to leave our table and go to the bar so they could seat others. Dropped 1K and left disappointed. The only thing spanish was the wine pairing."

"I tried Gitane because Michael Bauer just added it to his Top 100 list. I agree that the food is great - creative Spanish food that does not lose traditional Spanish flavors. Our waiter Justin was also good - definitely working extra hard given the cramped space. Unfortunately the great food and good service was completely overshadowed by the noise and cramped space. It was too loud to hear my dinner companion and I was almost sitting atop the tables on either side of us. I would have forgiven this if the prices were cheaper but Gitane is definitely charging in the 5 star range for the entrees and for that, you need at least 4 star ambience."

"The tables are fairly small and set close to one another. So it's difficult to not hear your neighbor's conversation as they are sitting 3-4 feet away from you. I can take this tight seating arrangement in Paris or New York, but this is SF, so give me a break. The food is nothing spectacular for the relatively high prices. Guess they figure this is near touristy Union Square, so they can charge 25-35% higher than comparable restaurants in other SF districts."

"The tasters menu and wine pairings were simply stunning. From the white asparagus starter through to the dark chocolate and cherry desert, every dish was well prepared with balanced and interesting flavor combinations complemented with delicious wine pairings that were spot on. The presentations were nicely done with a fine staff of team service, in an intimate setting. I can't wait to come back to San Francisco and make this a regular dining destination. Don't be put off by the lane (alley) entrance location, the décor is surprisingly warm and welcoming."

"What happened to the stuffed calamari? I came here at least once a month for a romantic dinner or with a group of friends, basically any reason I could find, and always ordered the stuffed calamari. Everyone I ever came with became a regular and ordered the same dish. This time, however, everything about the menu had changed: the wine list, appetizers and meals, and the desserts. Our wine was still excellent and the the beignets were still there (even if their name changed) and they were heavenly. The food was good but nowhere near as memorable as in the past. Gitane was a place we frequented because of its beautiful decor and fantastic food. Unfortunately, among all the fantastic options in this city, it doesn't stand out anymore."

"This is the first meal I've ever had that made feel like dancing after experiencing a dreamlike symphony of wine and food . We had the pairing of food and wine from the passport menu. I have always enjoyed food and wine pairings, but never have I had such complimentary combinations. Each sip of wine enhanced the taste of the course in front of you to the point the wine was part of the course completely and should not be separated. Simply wonderful meal and the restaurant is beautiful."

"Food was good, but there was way too much upsell from the server. It felt very mechanical. Also the servers didn't seem totally passionate about food (which I don't demand but you sort of expect now in SF, esp at these prices.) Ambiance is ok—heavy for SF, not your open- and rustic- kind of places. But it doesn't pretend to be. So that's ok. The bartenders are super friendly and chill though; a good counter to the servers."

"When i walk in the restaurant, the interior was differnt. Its actually look very fun and good place to hang at the bar. I order scallop and fish for appertizer. Scallop was good but way too pricy. I got only one piece of scallop and a little piece of sweet bread for 16$ but its was pretty good tho. The fish is alright, well serve and tasty. For entree i got flat steak and duck breast. The food portions in here are pretty small. But the food was good."

"We were not impressed. While the food is good the plates are very small so you need to order lots of plates to fill up well. The monkfish while tasty was mostly a big piece of bone. When we asked for bread they gave us one piece per person and while that may be European in Europe they replace the one piece of bread after you eat it. We asked for more bread but did not get it. Had to go for pizza elsewhere after dinner at Gitane. Nice modern decor but somewhat claustrophobic. Overall ok but would not recommend to friends."

"The Munk Fish was fabulous, the tapas small plates were really, really small, wine was pricey, and although the server tried hard to keep the food moving the kitchen seemed to be pretty backed up. Gitane does stay open later than most of the restaurants in the downtown area."

"Lovely menu of fine unusual choices not found elsewhere. Perfect smaller portions of healthy ingredients sated that palate without stuffing the belly leaving all of us feeling wonderful after the delightful meal. "A beautiful space. My ADD went into overdrive the moment we walked in. So many things to look at, such attention to detail! Love the plush feel. All the dishes we had were fantastic.
The biggest negative was the pacing of the meal. Perhaps because the restaurant is on 2 floors, the timing gets alittle thrown off? We were seated for 20 minutes before the server came over to take our drink order. Our first drink came out after our first courses. Second courses came out rapid fire, before the server had time to check in. "We had the 5 course tasting menu with wine. Four of the dishes were very good: white asparagus salad, torta de quesos, quail ballantine, and lamb shoulder, all with outstanding wine pairings. The accompaniments were mostly excellent with the exception of the overprocessed smoky eggplant puree that came with the lamb and tasted only of smoke. Sponge cake/ice cream underwhelmed after such a quality meal.
Service was very good and the room is quiet allowing for easy conversation."

"I've been eating and drinking at Gitane for the past 4 years now and I've never left disappointed. The seasonal menu always has some wonderful surprises (the sweetbreads and scallop was amazing my last visit) and it's never a bad idea to get adventurous with the wines and ports. Put your palette in the hands of the well trained staff for a delightful experience."

"This was our second time to Gitane. Food is very good and of high quality but expensive. The wine list is also very expensive. While we have enjoyed our two experiences at Gitane, the cost of the food is on the high side and given the alternatives we most likely will not go back unless the prices are lower."

"The plan was dinner then the Morrissey show. At the last minute Morrissey canceled his show (again), alas the night was not lost, Gitane was fantastic.
Had reservations, we walked in and they had a table waiting for us despite the place being pretty busy, a huge + is my book.
Inside is energetic and the decor is interesting and unique, which combined some people might find to be distracting, I don't think it was too bad.
I don't think you could go wrong with anything on the menu. We tried a few cocktails, all were excellent, I liked 'pillow fight' the best. For dinner we had the guinea hen and the duck. I love duck and this was the best I've ever had, the hen was excellent as well.
All around 5 stars."
