"This was are second time, the first time we fell in love with the ambiance very romantic we just had drinks at the bar and we looked at the menu we thought that were coming back for dinner since there's a lot of people dining that night so we said were going to try it and come back for dinner with our friends so we did for valentine"s day night and we did and not very happy our expectations are very high and came out very disappointed. Then, my husband says oh probably they were just busy that night so I said okay we'll try it again for mother's day brunch oh my my the food in my neighborhood was far better and the waiter that serves us has no personality. So I said that's it. Were not coming back here again."

"Big 4 has the kind of elegance you don't experience very often anymore - but it's not outdated or stodgy. Impeccable but friendly service. Outstanding filet mignon. Large salads (a la carte and rather expensive). This is the kind of restaurant for when you want a memorable experience and aren't worrying about the cost."

"Walking into the restaurant, it is decorated as if you are going into a classy, gentleman's den. There is a man playing the piano softly, the maitre'd is waiting patiently for your coat, and the restaurant is filled with couples enjoying each other in romantic conversation. Try something unique like the Wild Boar Chop. The bartender is a MUST-SEE! He has been bartending at The Big 4 for 19+ years. You have to get an after-dinner drink with him. My favorite is the expresso martini. -A very satisfied Wife"

"The Big 4 Restaurant is the quintessential San Francisco restaurant. Take a short step back into San Francisco history with all the old photos, the railroad magnates, the banking magnates and retailers who made San Francisco the pearl of the West. A step away from the Barbary Coast into the elegance of the 20's in old San Francisco. The Big 4 is a special place for that special event, quiet, staff is calm, well organized, at your beckon call and extremely attentive to details. The world class bar and their expert mixologist are unmatched. Their manhattans are superb, try one of your choice, MakersMark, Bourbon, Southern Comfort et al, the man is an artisan with this. "We like going to the Big 4. The surroundings are great; it has an old world San Francisco vibe. The service is always attentive. However, I think the prices are sometimes out of line for what you get. We both had the chef's special last time. The price was $33 for a pork ragu with gnocchi. The ragu lacked flavor and you only got about six to seven gnocchi. I wish the food lived up to the rest of the dining experience."

"While visiting San Francisco we stayed in the Nob hill neighborhood and we wanted a place close by to try. This restaurant was close by and the ambiance is classic. The food and service were excellent. I had the Chicken Breast Roasted under a Brick and it was so moist and tender, I was not dissapointed, the best chicken I have ever had. My husband had a filet and while he would of liked it cooked a little longer he did enjoy it. For dessert we had the Lemon creme brulee which was a perfect ending. Definitely this is a place where you can come to relax and enjoy a great meal."

"This is a nice restaurant in a wonderful Nob Hill location. I think the setting and atmosphere are terrific. The food, however, just did not seem exciting. Service is excellent, and the atmosphere is great. I think a better menu and possibly better chef could turn the food around. In fairness, I've only eaten here once in the past three years, but my previous experiences were similar to dinner on March 23, 2013."

"The ambience and service were great. Salad and desert were excellent. But my $44 rib eye was just okay. First, I am almost sure it was a New York and not a Rib Eye because of the texture and lack of marbling throughout. Also, I ordered it medium rare and it came out medium which was disappointing. The wines by the glass were also very sub-par for a restaurant like this. There was only one Pinot Noir available. Overall, I would go back for the drinks and bar scene but not to eat."

"The Big 4 has a luxurious. romantic dining room and serves excellent food.
We had the lobster bisque, the wild boar, and the osso buco. All were excellent, but the bisque was outstanding.
Service was somewhat lacking: It took a while to get drinks refilled, and it took about 10 minutes to get our check after requesting it.
The food is not cheap but is worth the price. The drinks were a bit overpriced."

"This was our first visit to The Huntington Hotel. I knew right from the greeting at the curb by James the doorman/valet it was going to be an excellent experience. This is Old San Francisco at it's finest. The food was outstanding as was the service. It was a special occasion we were celebrating, but any occasion is reason alone to dine here. We intend to be back many times."

"The Big 4 Restaurant is fantastic restaurant, where you have the feeling the time is slowing down to relax and enjoy this great atmosphere. The service is top and the food exquisite. A great addition to this spot is the bar and the live piano player. This made the whole dinner a perfect one and we can only recommend this place if you are looking for a traditional, romantic restaurant and a fantastic steak."

"The Big 4 is an SF classic that I've been visiting since I first moved here. I love this place. The food is spot on every time, classic dishes prepared with care and a nod to haute cuisine without the pretense. While pricey it is very worth every penny. The dining room is very romantic, like an english club of years gone by. Service is attentive, prompt and very gracious. I proposed to my partner over dinner her and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a wonderful romantic evening.
Some favorites, the Seafood Risotto, The lobster bisque is to die for, the wild boar is amazing, so is the buffalo and you'll never go wrong with the selection of sorbets."

"Wonderful "old school" room, with a traditional menu that matches the ambiance. The food was well executed, with high quality ingredients. The service was disappointing - after being seated we waited 20 minutes with no menus to look at or offers to take drink orders. And it was not busy. The waiter arrived only after we flagged down another server and asked if anyone was assigned to our table, something I have never done at this caliber of the restaurant. From there service was ok, but no descriptions given of anything on the menu, no fresh ground pepper for the salad, and another long wait for the check. "Located in the Huntington Hotel, this restaurant is a real gem. There's live piano music and a fireplace in the bar, and along with the wood paneling and classic traditional furnishings, the food is thoughtfully prepared and presented nicely. It's not an extensive menu, or overly creative, but everything they do, is done very nicely. For me, this is a "go to" place in San Francisco."

"One of the best restaurants in San Francisco. Petrole Sole is delicious. We visit this restaurant each year when we go to the Winter Fancy Food Show. It's a great treat. It's a great place to have a wonderful dinner and relax after a long day at the show. Dean, the matire, is a delight. Enjoy!"

"The Big 4 transports you back to an era when wealthy folk paid big buck for good food - not fancy food featuring wasabi-roasted beets with sea urchin foam - just solid, yummy food that's designed to taste just plain good. I strongly recommend the lobster bisque en croute. It's the absolute best I've ever had, and I grew up with the best lobster in Southern Maine."
