Chef Fred Neuville is excited to embark on his first solo venture. “With Fat Hen, I am striving to create a neighborhood restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and signature French-inspired Southern cuisine,” he says. “Johns Island is a fast-growing area and I believe island residents – along with others from around Charleston – will appreciate what we have to offer.” Fat Hen’s main dishes center around innovative French classics with Low country flourishes, sourced from the finest local produce farmers. Neuville’s tangy-but-tender BBQ Scallops are first marinated in a house-made pomegranate barbecue sauce, bacon wrapped and grilled to perfection. The Braised Chicken features locally raised free-range chicken braised in red wine with rich bacon lardons, pearl onions & mushrooms. Fat Hen’s Short Ribs, a favorite signature dish among family and friends, is braised for hours in a rich veal broth. In addition Fat hen offers catering services.

"It's become somewhat of a tradition for our family to have dinner at Fat Hen when we visit the Charleston area. Consistently excellent food and service with an upbeat, festive atmosphere. It's a little loud so perhaps not great for a romantic night out but it's perfect for starting off our vacation."

"Restaurant opens for dinner at 5:30, bar is open at 4. We had a reservation for 6pm but were in the area quite early (around 5pm) so we decided to have a few drinks at the bar while we waited. They ended up seating us at 5:30, which was fine with us! It did not take long at all for the restaurant to fill up after that.
Both my date and I are not able to eat very much food in one sitting so we went with a few appetizers (unfortunate, some of the main dishes seemed fantastic). We ordered the fried duck livers with mushroom cream sauce, foie gras terrine, crab soup and a cheese plate, which won a coin flip with the charcuterie plate, featuring sausages made on-site with herbs grown on property. All was exceptional and we would return!"

"We like good food and we like to bring along our kids too! Fat Hen is great about utilizing the food from local farms, so everything is fresh. They have imaginative recipes to complement their seasonal fare as well. Furthermore, they also have tried and true dishes like the shrimp and pasta that are always great when you know you just want to have something you are familiar with and will enjoy. AND they have a great kids menu. Overall it can't be beat for any occasion!"

"We made a 9:30pm reservation but wish we had arrived earlier. The server rushed us along a bit, since it was obvious she was trying to be finished for the night. She didn't look us in the eyes, she rushed us in taking our orders, and she never came to check on our experience during the meal (likely because she already had started the side work). I highly recommend the restaurant because of good food and atmosphere, but I suggest getting an earlier reservation to avoid becoming an unwanted late guest."

"We were a group of 6 ladies who wanted a delicious meal and some more local ingredients. This restaurant was fantastic! We all tried 3 different appetizers...including escargot and fried green tomatoes...and we all had the shrimp and grits along with a side of collards. Once the meal arrived, we all took our first bites and we were in heaven. the flavor and presentation was right on target! We barely talked again until we were done with our meal. The only problem is we just wish we had a Fat Hen back in CT!!!"

"The food was somewhat disappointing...my husband's flat iron steak was undercooked and the bearnaise sauce tasteless..collard greens the best he has ever eaten. My flounder was perfect but served over very runny tasteless grits..roasted beet and goat cheese salad was excellent.Good choice of $20 bottles of wines and our server attentive and pleasant.Wonder why the restaurant is advertised as French inspired with a southern twist...except for a few French named dishes, there is nothing French about it."

"As usual, our food was superb. We brought 2 friends that work in a Summerville restaurant for 27 years, and they fell in love. Thanks to a gracious staff that seated once we arrived a bit late, and a very observant server...Tia I think. We will continue to recommend Fat Hen!"

"Food was a little disappointing this time. Someone used a really heavy hand with the salt which left no natural flavor to the wonderful fresh veggies which I normally enjoy at the Fat Hen. The place was packed and the waitress didn't return until after we'd eaten our main course...so there was no chance for another glass of wine. We won't go on a weekend again."

"First visit, definitely won't be the last. First impression, very welcoming, relaxed and comfortable atmosphere for what was actually (menu-wise) a fine dine restaurant (so fine casual?). Next impression, service (from hostess to server & backwaiters to manager) - very pleasant, laid back, welcoming and knowledgeable. Having been born and raised in the South, my husband and I know genuine Southern hospitality when we see it and that's what we got. Finally, the food. Tasty, creative, with excellent presentation. Also, great craft beer selection. Bonus? Not in downtown Charleston! My husband hates the traffic/parking there. After our dinner at Fat Hen, he asked that we please come here every time we visit the area. Go. You'll love it."

"Had a great evening at The Fat Hen this week while visting the Charleston area on Spring Break. The hostess was very accomodating for our group of 8 and the menu had gluten-free items that were a treat for our child with Celiac's disease. The atmosphere was lively and the food was GREAT. This was our second visit to The Fat Hen and is a family favorite."
