Review 4 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I hate to tell everyone this with the fear that the restaurant may fill up, but brunch at David Burke's Primehouse was great! The quality of the food was outstanding compared to other breakfast locations that charge similar prices. Primehouse tempts you with additional sides (that are delicious and run up the tab), but overall, for the price and quality, this is a place I will bring guests and frequent more in the future."

Review 9 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Having been to all the "high end" steakhouses in Chicago, this one is far overrated. I ordered my steak blue or extra rare and the steak they brought me was closer to medium. Had I not been in with business associates and not wanting to make a seen I didn't bother to send it back. If you're going to pay that much for a steak they could at least cook it right. The sides were no where near as good as the same things at a place like Mortons. The service was friendly but painfully slow. If you want to show off your bank roll, go to the Primehouse. If you want to get a real good meal at a high end place, go somewhere else."

Review 10 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"What a difference 2 years makes! We so enjoyed this resturant on a short trip to Chicago in 08. It was almost impossible to get in, but, was so incredible we ate there twice the same weekend. Went back this year, and I am still impressed with the menue, but the buzz has long faded. Interior is more than a little worn out. It didn't help that we were there for Sunday Brunch and it was really bright, so alot of the wear and tear was on display. It was not busy at all and there was vituraly no wait. Service was excellent and the food was top notch. The menue has changed little and could use an update. I'm sure they have been concentrating on all of the other locations David Burke has opened lately. It's time to do a make over in Chicago."

Review 12 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Service before seeting was horrible. Waited more than 1 hour after reservation time, even though I was told more than one time that there was only one person ahead of our group. Trying to order at the bar was similar. Waiter said he was going to wait on my next and then took another order from a regular ahead of me and then waited another 15 minutes for the drinks."

Review 13 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"we were seated right away for a lunch on a saturday. waiter was friendly and eager to please, the menu had reasonably priced options (and high priced options). the choices were original and folks were eager to try different things. food was excellent, well prepared, good quality ingredients and flavorful. choices of beer were also very good - not a wide selection, but not the usual stuff. prior to taking our orders, the waiter disappeared for a while, but once he reappeared all was fine. we had the burker, the benny, prime rib sandwhich, salmon tacos, bisque - all were excellent and the meat was cooked to order perfectly. folks were very happy with the selection."

Review 14 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I dined here with 4 people the last time I was in Chicago and couldn't wait to return. This time, our reservation was for 6 and we ended up with 11. They were extremely accommodating. Beyond the service is the food. Our meals were absolutely spectacular. For appetizers, we had the surf and turf dumplings, seafood castle and crab cakes. Salads are also excellent. Lobster bisque is incredible. For dinner, the dry aged steaks are the way to go. Everyone ordered reserve cuts which are mouth watering. You also have to try the broccoli spring rolls and lobster fried rice. There was nothing left. Although, we had no room for desert, they brought out a nice array of almond cookies, vanilla mashmallows and caramels. A nice touch. Will be back!!"

Review 18 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We ordered the three course lunches which can be supplemented with a five dollar glass of wine (discounted from $15 with the luncheon). Our appetizers, the bisque and the dumplings were exquisite. The short rib dumplings were especially tasty morsels. Our steaks were among the best we have had with perfectly seared crust. Desserts were a high point. Presentation of the popovers in little pans and the sides (we had the asparagus and the mushrooms which we would recommend) in miniature fry pans seemed like a bit much, but the food remained separated on the plate which was nice. We will return."

Review 20 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I've been to David Burke's many times and will go back again. However, this time my steak was not cooked to order and so was sent back. Still not right the second time, and by then it was just too tough to eat so we ordered another cut. HOwever, after all of this time my husband had finished his dinner.
The staff was very nice about it, but still disappointing.

Review 23 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I've been to Primehouse twice before and this time was just as good as the last! Food is very good, but you have to know what to order. I started wtih the Spinach Salad, should have ordered the Cesear. I prefer my salads to be mixed (tossed) together, it came deconstructed. However, I've had the tabelside Cesear before and it is great. I Ordered the 55-day dry-Aged ribeye and it didn't dissapoint! Great as the last time I had it, in my opinion, it is the best steak in Chicago! It's got the perfect amount of funk (from the dry aging process)on it. Service was very good, our server definately could read tables well (saw that we were engaging & the table next to us was not as much). Definately will be going back again for a great steak!"

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We went from Michigan to Chicago last week for dinner and a good steak. Prime House was recommended to us as a good source for good dry aged steaks and we were not disappointed. We had great steaks. We have been all over the U.S. and around the world and have not found a better flavored steak. Additionally the sides were fantastic. I would recommend this place to anyone."

Review 25 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I went to David Burke's Prime House during restaurant week and although it was not as good as I was expecting it was a good value. The portions were the perfect size. I had heard that the steaks were the best in the city, but did not find that to be true. One of my friends actually ordered the 40 day aged steak ($30 extra) and my filet which was on the menu ended up being much better. You should definitely make sure to order your steaks rarer than you want because all of our steaks were over cooked. The sides and desserts were good. Definitely worth checking out once, but doubt I'll go back."

Review 26 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Everything on the Restaurant Week menu SOUNDED delicious - but turned out much better on paper than on your plate. Surf (lobster) and turf (short ribs) dumplings? Sounds amazing! But the reality was lukewarm, mushy, not enough filling, and the dumpling wrapper was soggy. A good dumpling should be pan fried, getting that crispy bottom - but these dumplings were sub par and disappointing at best. The rest of the meal followed suit.

The service was decent. They were very attentive, but almost overly so. They delivered the first course almost immediately and delivered the second right on top of it. They kept delivering the next course before we were even finished with the prior. It was as if they were trying to get rid of us ASAP.

"I read the reviews before going to dinner and sure enough my steak was cooked incorrectly and I had to return it. "Jeremy, our waiter was AWESOME!!! The bus boy and assistant waiter were also excellent. We were a bit turned off with the hostess though. When she found out the party of 6 consisted with 2 kids, she made a face. I wanted to tell her kids are people too, but instead just thought maybe she had a bad day.On a good note, Jeremy and his crew made up for an excellent service and the food was awesome! This was our second visit to David Burke's, and will continue to go.Thanks!"

"We enjoyed a great meal during Restaurant week at David Burke's Primehouse! The food was high quality and the service was excellent. The atmosphere is upscale but not stuffy. You can go in nice jeans and a sweater or dress slacks and a blouse. The prices are on the higher end and I would consider this a great place to celebrate a special occasion. High quality steaks and upscale service...great experience!"

Review 32 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"We made reservations for 10 pm but was unable to get a table until 11:30 pm. They took people who did not have reservations ahead of us. The portions were extremely small and so not worth the price. We spent over $100 for 3 people and left still starving. Would NEVER recommend this restaurant to anyone. The steaks were burnt and bland, the tea tasted funny, the kobe beef sashimi tasted alright but was way to salty (imagine 2 pieces paper thin totaling 1 inch square that was the whole portion). Worse restaurant I have ever been to."

Review 33 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I went to 4 restaurants during restaurant week and David Burke's was by far the best. I wouldn't have gone to this restaurant if it wasn't for restaurant week. There are so many other steakhouses in the area, but this one sets itself apart. It's not your average stuffy steakhouse. It's got a vibrant mood, the service was outstanding, and the food was amazing. I highly recommend the Kobe Beef Sashimi. When I am in need of a steakhouse in the future, this will be the place I go and will definitely recommend it to others. My fiance and I are already planning another trip there in the future."

Review 34 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Maybe the best steak in the city. This is the second time we've gone for the Restaurant Week special and it's terrific. Since the prices are so high, normally, it's great to get a chance to eat there for less. Good waiter. Nice to be seated at time of reservation and not made to wait. As you'd expect, even validated parking is high: $14. Love the popovers (and I confess to asking for a second one, which came immediately). The sides were great. The Kobe thin-sliced beef served on a salt brick with special mayonaise was outstanding. Even the Burker(sic) is delish."

Review 35 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Food was excellent. Wait staff was attentive yet not overbearing. The soup of the day had changed from what the waiter had told me and when I didn't like it the waiter brought me a second choice which was the Kobe beef. It was outstanding! I'm so glad that I had a chance to try it! We came specifically for restaurant week we will definately return for lunch again in the future. Overall it was a great experience."

Review 36 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Our steaks were certainly good and cooked properly. However, the ambiance in this place was more suited to an Outback Steakhouse. The clientele was loud, very casually dressed and packed in like sardines. There are many great steakhouses to choose from, and we'll go elsewhere to find an atmosphere that matches the quality of the food.
Also, we two were inexplicably seated at a four-top next to the service station when other tables were available. And we were dresssed more formally as we were also going to the theatre. Even my usually blase husband commented on the poor table we were given when the restaurant wasn't full. Odd. We asked to change locations and were immediately accommodated, so that was nice.

Review 38 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Service at check-in was unwelcoming, and the coat check procedure was awkward. However our server was fantastic, and made us feel welcome even though we stuck to the Restaurant Week menu (no drinks). The Kobe sashimi and rib/lobster potstickers were outstanding, as was the petite filet. The Delmonico was described as "marbled", but had so much fat, a 7 oz steak had about 3-4 oz of edible meat. The Burker was really good, as were the fries. Mashed potatoes, asparagus and mushroom sides were great! The King and Slice of Prime desserts were excellent as well. The atmosphere was much more laid back than I expected. Overall, it was a great experience."

Review 39 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Everything was great, we were having a great time & even said we would return. That all changed when I got home to find my leftovers were thrown in the to-go box, on top of each other & not everything that was left on my plate was in the box. I purposely left 1/2 my dinner to take home & I got 1/3 of what was left on my plate. Also, the burger we brought home looked equally unappetizing as it fell apart & the fries were mixed into the burger. Seeing my food at home was the last impression of your restaurant & I have to say it killed my experience. There are plenty of other restaurants to try & plenty that won't throw my leftovers in a box as if they were throwing them in the garbage. We will not be back b/c of how you handled my leftovers."

Review 42 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I went to David Burke's for restaurant week and ordered the kobe beef sashimi as the apppetizer, the delmonico steak as my entree, and the slice of prime for dessert. There was so much flavor with every bite of the kobe beef sashimi and the truffle mayo that comes with it, is just good by itself. The 28 day aged delmonico steak was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked to my liking, medium rare. The Slice of Prime was the best cake I have ever had--with a top layer of marshmellow and layers of chocolate mousse and cake. I wish they had served a bigger slice. Overall, completely satisfied with the food (including presentation) and the friendly servic"

Review 43 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"My husband and I were very disappointed with our service and our food at David Burke's Primehouse. Our waiter was disinterested and inattentive (I had to ask the waterboy to ask our waiter to bring me another glass of wine because the waiter passed by our table 5 or 6 times without asking if we needed anything else). The steak had an odd texture and flavor. I've had aged beef before and it tasted better than at the Primehouse. We were very excited to come here, as we saw the restuarant featured on either the Food Network, or Travel Channel. The reality did not live up to our expectations. The food seemed really overpriced for the quality."

Review 44 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We went for lunch during Restaurant Week. It was a great deal - $22.00 per person for a 3 course meal, plus drinks, tax and tip.
The place was busy, service was good, not great.
this is a steak house so we ordered the Petit Fillet - it had great flavor, but wasn't a "melt in your mouth" as this cut of meat should be. Nice sides, small, but enough for lunch.
all is all it was a very pleasant experience.

"Why a reservation - you will be seated up to 40 min after that time. Coat check may try to give you the wrong coat back. Review 46 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The food was very good for the Restaurant Week sampling. The steak portion was obviously very small, but probably not more than an average person should eat of red meat in one serving anyway.
Some of the tables offer some good settings, but the table we were at was squished in between two other couples - obviously not the most ideal for a cozy date - but i guess thats too be expected on a busy sat. night

Review 48 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Tried Primehouse for the first time during Restaurant Week -- phenomenal! Loved the filet mignon and NY strip steak, though not 40-day dry aged, they were seasoned very well and cooked to a perfect Medium, as requested. The sides were delicious and included a tasting of asparagus, mushrooms, mashed potatoes and creamed spinach (that was thankfully more spinach than cream). For dessert, The King banana bread was a bit dry, but the white chocolate cheesecake was smooth and not too sweet. Next time, will try the chocolate mousse cake and doughnut holes. Yes...we will be back!"

Review 55 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Went for dinner during restaurant week, it was delicious. In general the service was excellent, we were seated immediately, even though we were late arriving. It is very loud inside, so not the place to go if you feel like having intimate conversation.

The wine was expensive per glass, but mixed drinks were on par with other places nearby (~$10-12). My date and I both had the delmonico steak, it was cooked to perfection. The slice of prime, and cheesecake were also very good. Don't pass up the kobe sashimi. In hindsight, I would have preferred to try the signature steaks, at the restaurant week discounted rate.

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Went here during restaurant week. It was fantastic opportunity to eat at a restaurant that I wouldn't be able to afford otherwise. The steak was marvelous (although a tiny bit overcooked in my opinion, I like my steak VERY rare), and the creamed spinach was to die for. The wine selection was a little bit limited by the glass, but great if you were to order a bottle. My only real complaint was that it was very noisy. I'm not usually one to complain about noise but this was loud enough that it was a bit difficult to hear the person across the table from me. Otherwise my trip to David Burke's Primehouse was fantastic and I would highly recommend it."

Review 57 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Went during restaurant week and the food was very good. The Delmonico steak was cooked an accurate medium rare and was very flavorful. The sides included with the steak where each served in there own miniature cast iron skillets - the creamed spinach and mushrooms stood out while the potatoes and asparagus were also good but pretty basic. The kobe beef sashimi appetizer is a must try, the presentation is pretty and the truffle mayo was a delicious bonus. Also had a couple bites of the burger which had rich toppings but the steak was a taster meat. The King dessert was good not to heavy, but the banana cake could have been a little moister and stronger in flavor."

"I was very disappointed in my steak and had it sent back. I had ordered my steak med-rare but what was delivered was med-well/well done and very dry/tough. They were happy to correct their mistake, but for a steakhouse they should have been dead-on with my order. When they returned with my new steak they also neglected to replace the side items I had placed on my plate previous to discovering my inappropriately prepared steak."

Review 64 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Went for restaurant week, menu was great for this kind of experience. We both got the 6 oz filet and I can't imagine eating more steak, it was the perfect portion. This makes me question if it would be worth it to go outside of this special event as i think the smallest steak you can get on the regular menu is like 12 oz and super expensive. Apps were delicious, dessert...eh ok, nothing grand."

Review 65 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"This place was awesome. My new england clam chowder was so fresh, it was like dining at the coast. The herbs in it and the firm little bites of potato made it extra special. My petite filet was perfect and so was my dining partners delmonico. The desert, the slice of prime was probably in the top 5 I have ever had. It is unreal. The marshmallow toasted on the top was like nothing I had ever had before. It was firm but not chewy. The cappuccino was superb, this full bodied froth. Yum. Our server Brian was attentive but not hovering. It was an A+ experience, something you would expect for the area."

Review 66 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The Restaurant Week luncheon menu was spectacular -- and a great value. The surf and turf appetizer dumplings were luscious and, of course, the popovers are to die for! Our steaks were perfectly cooked and served hot. Loved the 4 sides that accompanied the steaks. Service was especially attentive. One of our favorite restaurants!"

Review 68 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I think the food at David Burke's was definitely a hit. I went during Restaurant Week and was therefore able to try more dishes than I normally would have (since the regular menu is a bit pricey). I sampled Kobe Beef Sashimi which was presented on a block of salt and was just delicious. My entree was a NY Sirloin, cooked to perfection, with 4 different sides. The only disapointment was the dessert. It definitely left something to be desired. We also were seated on the wall which is next to JBar. It was really loud (you could hear the bass through the wall) because of that. We did have a great server though. I would go back for a special occasion!"

Review 70 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Our waiter was very personable, but not always very attentive. Two of us were served the wrong steaks, even after switching them and asking if we had the right cuts by the server. We had to wait 20 minutes for new steaks, while the other half of our party ate. We waited a long time for drinks, etc. It was Restaurant Week, which could have been the problem, but the restaurant should be used to being busy. Although the food was good...my delmonico steak was extremely fatty and chewy."

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"My experience at David Burke's was phenomenal. Firstly, the food is amazing. We ordered from the Restaurant Week's 3 course special menu. The portions were sizeable, the steak was delicious (we both ordered the New York) and cooked to perfection, and the options were all incredible. The service was also exceptionable. Our waiter was helpful and gracious and checked on us regularly to ensure that we were enjoying our dining experience."

Review 78 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Service was great, but the food was very bland. Part of this was due to it being Restaurant Week, therefore many of the pre fixe dishes tasted like they were reheated from prep hours earlier. However, I also upgraded to the 55-day aged porterhouse. Flavor was bland, marbling was poor, and preparation was inconsistent (medium-well some parts, medium rare other parts."

"Went for Restaurant Week 2010 and was a very good deal for what we got. The Kobe Sushimi was very good and everyone's steaks were delicious. Great, if not amazing food, but for what it costs it might not be the best we have ever had. Hard to get a really good sense though because of the Restaurant Week menu that we ordered off of. Service, I believe our waiter's name was Chris, was top of the line because he was very nice, informative, and gave some good opinions. Overall a pleasant dining experience and a great deal for Restaurant Week."

"We had a reservation and were taken about 20 min late. Not too bad but not ideal. Service was a little slow getting our first course out. We were a table of 4 and another table of 4 sat down across from us about 15 minutes after we did. We ordered before them and they received their food well before we did. Ordered steak medium rare and it was slightly overcooked but very flavorful. Surprising for a restaurant that specializes in steak."

Review 86 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"My experience at David Burke's was generally average, which would be fine if I hadn't paid a hefty price for it. My boyfriend and I went during restaurant week. I had the lobster bisque, which had 2 small pieces of lobster and was generally bland. My boyfriend had kobe sashimi, which said was excellent. For dinner I ordered a Filet medium, he ordered a delmonico medium rare. Mine came out cold and purple in the middle, his delmonico barely had any pink left. The desserts were so-so, we both left half of it. Also, it was quite loud and we were sitting next to a table that made a scene twice about how incorrectly cooked their steaks were. Apparently we weren't the only ones with this problem. Overall, it was so-so not worth the price"

"First time visit. Very good service and delicious and interesting food. Our server, Jeff, was knowledgeable about the restaurant and the items on the menu and he added a lot of enjoyment to our dining experience. We were only two but were seated in one of the large booths and were very comfortable. It was great to be able to visit and hear each other. We have recommended the Primehouse to several of our pals and they will sample it during Restaurant Week also. We are looking forward to another lunch there. "my thoughts from restaurant week:
-truffle fries: awesome; DB's version was almost as good as rockit's
-other sides (mashed potatoes, asparagus, creamed spinach, & mushrooms): edible but not exciting
-appies (kobe steak sashimi, fried crab cake rolled in a pretzel, lobster bisque): tasty and enticing
-dessert (white chocolate raspberry cheesecake & chocolate mousse cake): subpar. appeared manufactured, not homemade
steaks (petite filet, delmonico, & new york sirloin): average but considering the targeted consumer (foodies) it was disappointing. the dry aged meat might be better.

our waiter was unethical. he brought the wrong cut & tried to pass it off as the cut we ordered. fatty 7oz delmonicos do not look like lean 6oz petite fi

"We wanted to try Primehouse during restaurant week- additionally, it was my birthday. With 4 people we were able to cover the majority of the pre-fixed menu and the overall commentary was that everything was delicious. Being that it was smaller portions- we were left wanting more....which means we'll be back.

There were several reviews on Metromix warning about the slow valet service- not so: we had our car within 5-7 minutes.

Review 96 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"My wife & I thought the Primehouse had a cool vibe from a combination of the decor, lighting & the background music, it offers a different experience from the other Chicago steakhouses we have visited. But it's not pretentious. Service was prompt, efficient, but also graceful. The food was outstanding & well presented from the appetzier sampler to desert. The bartender recommended the the 40 day aged ribeye. That was an excellent recommedation. We found it was one most flavorful steaks we have eaten, but not so huge, to make it impossible to finish. The sides were solid, with the chorizo mashed potatoes different twist & the simple mac & cheese, simply good. It's expensive but worth a vist for a special occassion or different experience."

Review 97 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The steak I had was great. I had the delmonico which was moist and perfectly done. However, the Kobe beef sashimi, although delicious according to its reputation, was a bit salty. Also, the maitre de was a little rude in taking my order and the wait was long despite my booking a reservation ahead of time. They also seated my party of two at a table for six, which was weird, but not to be complained about."

Review 99 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Dined at Primehouse during Restaurant week and was left a little disappointed. Read a wonderful review in the newspaper about the surf and turf dumplings, but I was left feeling unsatisfied. The delmonico steak was extremely fatty. The desserts were delicious and our server was very attentive. The restaurant/kitchen was working on overdrive and our meal felt rushed - we were in and out for dinner in less than 45 minutes. Wouldn't return."

"The service, from Corey, was absolutely top-notch. Friendly, knowledgeable and professional. He made our night.

Unfortunately, the food from the kitchen was very average, at way-above-average prices. We had a better dinner the evening before, with comparable wine, at almost 1/3 the price.

Review 108 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Service was outstanding. The waiter was fun and had a great personality. This is my fourth time to a David Burke location and it was well worth it. I was skeptical of the set menu but it definitely kept my expectations and streak alive. Out of all the steakhouses in Chicago or any others for that matter, I have been to quite a few, David Burke's has the best steaks. For my birthday last year, my parents came in town and asked me what I wanted.Told them I wanted the 75 Day Aged steak from your restaurant. On top of the great food; I can go back to the service. I requested to go to the "aging chamber" after dinner, manager said he will start calling it that, thought that was funny, but took us right away after dinner. You can not go wrong here"

Review 110 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I was really excited about this restaurant, but I was disappointed. I expected more attention to detail in the food preparation. The service was nice which made for a good nite, but the food just didn't live up to my expectations. The age on my steak was good, but its like the chef forgot that seasoning elevates the steak so it left a lil to be desired. Even the sides weren't seasoned well, though they were perfectly cooked. Due to my schedule, I didn't have time for the whole sending it back thing. I'm not sure I would go back. For the price, there are too many steak houses that you don't have to coach through it when I spend that kind of money. I wouldn't tell anyone not to go, but wouldn't recommend it"

Review 111 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"This was the first place that I tried during Restaurant Week, and I will tell you that I will eat there again. The food was incredible. I did the lunch, and for $22, it was amazing. The Kobe Beef Sashimi was incredible, and the truffel mayo was the perfect touch. The Delmonico Steak was so tender, but I was surprised that the server did not know what "blue" was, so I had to explain to him that it would be considered extra rare. The mushrooms had great flavor, and the basil whipped mashed potatoes were incredble. I did the "King" for dessert, but I want to go back and do the White Chocolate Cheesecake, and the surf and turf dumplings. Overall, it was fantastic!!"

Review 112 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I went on Valentines, so my girlfriend and I took part in the special prix fixe menu. Both of our fillets were amazing and cooked as ordered. Two tables near us sent items back to the kitchen for various issues, but our meals were perfect. I'm not sure if the other two tables were overly picky, but there was nothing wrong with our meals at all.
I regret the iceberg wedge, even though it was exactly as described. But that's only because I feel I should have taken advantage of another menu item.
The staff was very attentive and friendly. The waiter was very friendly and down to earth, and not at all pretentious when describing the menu like some waitstaff seems trained to do at other restaurants.

"Second time coming. First time was great during Restaurant week last year. This time during valentine's day they rushed our service. Food was also a little off. Review 114 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The Kobe beef sashimi was sublime: served on a block of Himalayan pink salt with truffle chips. Dry aged beef is the specialty here. I opted for the 35-day aged bone-in strip. My wife went with the bone-in Southside Filet. I'm not a dry-aged beef expert, but to my pallet, the 10 day aged filet tasted more "aged" or "gamey" than the strip. I didn't think the filet had quite the texture usually equated with a $46 cut of meat. Creamed spinach was bland. The asiago truffle fries were very tasty. Service was attentive without being overbearing. I wouldn't rate this as an exceptional value in a steakhouse."

"We went on Valentine's Day. They had a pre-fix menu which was a reasonable deal ($75 for 4 courses). The amuse bouche platter was fantastic. Appetizers were amazing. I got the standard bone-in filet from the pre-fix menu and my fiance got the 28 day dry aged with a $10 additional cost. I should have done the same. My filet didn't compare to the buttery taste of the 28 day aged. Next time we'll definitely have to try the 45 day aged."

Review 118 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We went for Valentine's day, first time for my partner, 3rd time for me. I raved about how great it was and how the bisque, tempura green beans and of course, the steaks were awesome. He's a meat & potatoes type of guy, so I knew this would be a great place. Well, all was great, the aphrodisiac appetizers were amazing, the lobster bisque and scallops, delicious. The biggest disappointment was our steak, it was so bad, we didn't eat it, we tried. It was tough & rubbery on the outside yet pinkish red on the inside. No flavor, even though he had the peppercorn crust. They were nice enough to offer another one, yet we had to get back home to the kids. All was good, with the exception of the steaks, unfortunately. Might try it again."

"Unprepared for Valentine's day weekend. They advertised a bag of goodies with your V.day prefix menu but they were not prepared. Instead they gave us three bags of Magdalenes...what in the world is that?

Service was good and food good, but not excellent - our fillets were slightly overcooked. Portions were big, perhaps too big. The appetizers, however, were delightful and the service impeccable.

Overall it was an OK to good place to go, but I wouldn't come back for a special occasion such as Valentine's day.

"We went for the "Burkers", and we weren't disappointed. The burgers are among the best in the city, and the truffle asiago fries are the perfect complement. The popover bread that they serve at the start of the meal is also a treat.

On the down side, we ordered the lobster fried rice, and it missed the mark. It was spicy without being flavorful - a bad combination.

Our server was fantastic!

Review 132 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We went on a Monday night; the restaurant was dark and quiet, but not deserted. We enjoyed a comfortable booth. The waiter was attentive. The Kobe beef sashimi was very tasty and we enjoyed the truffle chips that came along with it. The caesar salad had lackluster romaine, but the dressing (prepared tableside) was delicious. The 55-day aged ribeye steak was quite tasty, although a bit of an acquired taste, I think. One was plenty for the two of us. The chorizo whipped potatoes were delicious (and very rich); pass on the broccoli spring rolls, which were not especially flavorful.

It was very expensive (out of our usual price range). We may go back for a special occasion, but I don't think it will enter our regular repertoire.

Review 133 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Excellent food, excellent service. Every server we encountered (they seem to have teams assigned to each table) was very personable and knew their menu and wine list inside and out. Not an inexpensive meal, but definitely a case of getting what you pay for. Also, the bartender we chatted with while waiting for the table was an expert mixologist."

Review 135 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The waiters were very knowledgeable about the selections. We were asked what type of steak we typically enjoy and reccommedatios were made based on our dining preferences instead of pushing their own agenda. I thought the Cake in a Can was a novel idea and when the mixing beaters were brought out so that we can like the beaters, it was an unexpected surprise."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The bartender suggested the Kobe Beef Sashimi and it was UNBELIEVABLY delicious. Excellent recommendation. The steaks were perfect and we are now devoted fans of tempura green beans. The table seating is not very intimate, it felt like we were dining with the couple directly to our left and we could hear every word of their conversation. Next time we will request a booth in the back. Excellent food, excellent atmosphere, excellent evening."

Review 139 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I was disappointed to find that the American dim sum menu was discontinued the weekend I dined here. I would definitely like to see that come back. As for the food, it was good, not great, but good. I would have liked to see more of a mix of breakfast food with lunch food to build each of the Brunch boxes they offered. As they are now, I felt I had to choose between either or and that took away from the true "brunch" experience. All in all the staff was very friendly and accommodating. Not sure how soon I'll be back but I have definitely not written the Primehouse off; I see potential for a great meal. The beef in the mini berkers I had was very tasty!"

Review 140 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The best steak in Chicago. Everything else is good, but certainly not the best in the city. People think that because it is expensive and the steaks are world class means that everything else will be also; that is simply not the case. It is the meat that is especially expensive and it is worth every penny. All the other prices are in line with downtown hotel restaurants and its quality is also in line with downtown hotel restaurants."

"The service and the ambience were superb. As was the Cheesecake lollipop tree. The appetizers were perfectly presented and the taste was as it should be. As were the salads. The 3 sides we had were the creamed spinach (good), the asparagus spring rolls (good but odd), and the asiago cheese and truffle fries (excellent). The steaks were as advertised and cooked perfectly. "Southside" Filet was excellent. The "55 day" was special."

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"David Burke's is hands down the best all-around steakhouse in Chicago, from the quality of the food, the presentation, and the creativity of the chef. I have eaten at all of the good steakhouses in Chicago, and alot in other states, and the only other one even close to this is Mastros in Scottsdale, Az. We are very fortunate to have this quality steakhouse in Chicago!!"

Review 148 for David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The food at the Primehouse was very good, but we found much of the experience lacking. This is an expensive restuarant, and I expect exceptional service when paying these prices. The timing of the food, the somellier and the support service were all subpar. There are plenty of other steakhouses in Chicago that offer a fantastic steak with much better attention to detail. Save your dollars and go elsewhere."

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The food was GREAT! You can't go wrong w/ an app served on Himalayan sea salt! The steaks were amazing. Dry aging definitely made the meat very moist. Service was great as well...good recommendations and very attentive. The only complaint we had was that the music was soft and barely heard in the beginning of our meal, but by the end the music got really loud and distracting. Luckily for us, we were having our coffee and getting our check so it didn't bother us too much. Overall, a GREAT place, but save up your money b/c its a bit pricey; however, like I said, the food is totally worth it."

"The staff at this restaurant was unbelievable. Our waitress took the time to explain some relevant history and sat us at David Burke's booth (it was my girlfriend's birthday). The service was timely, we never felt rushed, and the staff was not invasive. The 75-day dry aged steaks was one of the best pieces of meat I have ever had. We were brought a complimentary birthday cake with a beautiful presentation. The manager then came and gave us a private tour of the dry aging salt cellar. In a town of great steakhouses, this is one of my favorites."
