JoLe
JoLe is a Contemporary American Restaurant owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Matt and Sonjia Spector, chef and pastry chef, respectively. JoLe is the couple's second restaurant venture. Their first was the wildly successful, Matyson Restaurant in Philadelphia. The menu changes daily and is designed for flexibility: guests can pop in for a few a la carte dishes, or settle in for a multi course tasting menu that they design themselves. This lends itself well to the casual wine country pace. Matt uses organic, locally farmed ingredients as much as possible. Sonjia's desserts are updated versions of things her mom and grandmother made. Everything on the eclectic wine list is offered by the glass, half bottle, or bottle. The beer list is also fun, consisting of a wide variety of microbrews. JoLe also offers a full bar, specializing in small batch liquors. Even without reservations, bar and chef's counter seats are available on a first come, first serve basis

"We went to Jole on the last night of our honeymoon, we were staying in the hotel in which it's located. We had the four course tasting with wine pairings and it was great. We got to choose which plates we wanted to have which was a nice change from the typical "unknown" tasting selection. Being from DC we're used to pretty great food and this was right up there with some if our best meals. Side note: while delicious, the pork shoulder was really heavy on the pepper, a little too much so."

"The past two years' dinners here. with wine pairings, were wonderful, so our expectations were high, but unfortunately not met this year. Perhaps the chef has changed. At any rate, almost everything was put in the wood burning oven, obviously a new conceit in restaurants. But here, there was too much smoke, too much of a burned flavor, too much over-cooking. The bread was warmed in the oven, and tasted as if it had been rescued from a house fire. The grilled octopus was charred and way over done to the point of being hard. The crispy tofu was quite hard indeed and flavorless. The high points were the not overdone grilled asparagus and the too small portion of rabbit confit. So next year we will try another place."

"Enjoyed a fabulous dinner with my sister and niece at Jole last weekend. Great food, wonderful waiter and staff. The waiter made great recommendations and did not rush us. Jole has a very relaxed but hip atmosphere with wonderful background music. The deserts were heavenly can't wait to return."

"My wife and I like to share our meals. It's fun, romantic and allows us to really get into the food were eating. JoLe was a perfect place for us to enjoy, explore and eat. Each dish had the right amount of flare and sauces to offset, compliment and highlight the flavor of the main ingredient. We chose to Kompachi with uni and olive tapenade, Snapper with chilled mussels and the sweetbreads and some veggies to share. All terrific."

"We had bid on, and secured, a $100 voucher through a local service club crab feed. It cost us a little more but we knew it would be well worth it. We've been to JoLe several times and have never been disappointed. The food and presentation there is excellent and it is a real food adventure."

Bacon wrapped veal sweet bread or Rabbit Loin or grilled Quail or grilled Octopus, several bits & sips of each to prepair the diner for dinner. Each matched with wine to accent smooth round of finish. aroma of the dish when it hits the table, nose the wine, small sip. Silverware the dish to prepair the fork with each ingredient for a mouthful. Savor the food, chew lightly. Enjoy."

"We had a reservation for 8:45pm. we arrived at the restaurant 15 mins before our reservation. We were not seated until 9:50pm. We had to wait an hour for our tables. This is unheard of. I've never had to wait this long for a reservation. The guys kept coming out and apologizing. They brought us some champagne and when we finally were seated, the chef prepared a small apitizer for us for waiting. So, I guess they tried to make up for it, but regardless, the wait was LONG! Food was good. We did the four course tasting menu, and everything was delish!"

"My wife and I did the six course tasting menu with wine pairing. They allowed us to pick the six courses and we even picked different ones between us, no problem! They were also flexible on the wine pairings, they brought out a chardonnay, a varietal neither of us care for in the States, and they were more than happy to provide a very good substitution. The food was excellent, perfectly executed, and that was only matched by the service which was outstanding. Our server, Jamie?, was phenomenal, and all of the staff really took pride in their restaurant. We will definitely go back again."

"We had reservations for 5:45PM, we arrived on time and were seated immediately.
Received H2o but were then left unattended for about fifteen minutes. I had brought a bottle of wine and it was clearly on the table. We could see staff moving about, passing us by but none came to us. I finally got up and went to the bar to get the wine opened and poured, at which time we received immediate attention. Josh was our waiter and the manner in which he conducted himself made the wrong right. I later found out He did not start until 6:00, he had great suggestions and made the five course tasting a success. Only one plate was a disapointment and he quickly removed it from the table, rest were fab. Disapointed in the pastries."

"The small plate tasting menu was superb. The dishes were each artfully displayed with unique, colorful and delicious bites. Heirloom carrot Salad, Burmese Red Chili Octopus, Striped Sea Bass and Roasted Quail were my choices. Often small plates are larger than they should be with sauces that over power the dishes. The kitchen was a bit backed up, but their customer service minded wait staff provided an explaination and a complimentary refill on our wine as we waited. Good value for a very memerable experience."

"Wow what a great place! The food here is fantastic and the staff are excellent too, very helpful and knowledgeable. We ate at JoLe to celebrate our wedding anniversary and the staff made our experience extra special. Our server, James, helped us decide on the tasting menu with the paired wine menu and it turned out to be an excellent choice. We sampled so many delicious dishes and the wine was paired perfectly. "This had come very highly recommended so our expectations were high. It did not measure up. The heirloom carrot salad was not a salad but rather crisscrossed slivers of various colored carrots, some pickled, some not. Certainly overpriced. On the other hand the asparagus was exquisite. Both the lamb and the quail were ok, nothing to rave about. Then the lemon tart was superb!"

"This was our last evening for a 2 day stay in Calistoga. Quiet little town, but the few places we ate here did not disappoint at all. My husband had the flat iron cooked to perfection and practically melted in our mouths. We had been eating so heavily that I wanted just something light, so I ordered the prawns with tofu and mushroom and green onions in a dashi sauce. That was perfect as in texture and seasoning and we were very pleased with the recommended wine pairings with our meals."

"This was my second time dining at JoLe. The food was great! I was a little worried when I saw the menu this time because nothing sounded particularly good. We both did the five course tasting; in hindsight we could have done four and would have been satisfied. We both started with the baby red kale salad. Loved it! Second course-I had the oysters and pork belly (great!) an my SO had the second kale dish (good). Third course I had the lamb tongue Reuben (very good - the lamb was tender and perfect) and SO had the quail (quail was ok, the tamale with it was awesome). Fourth course, last savory one, we both had the duck breast. This was dissappointing - too tough to cut and therefore impossible to eat."

"The food once again was beautifully prepared and served. We had the prix fixe menu with 4 courses which were all lovely. The wine list is the most remarkable, since you can have some of the best wines by the glass or carafe. We had a lovely Kistler Chardonnay, which is never available by less then a very expensive bottle. This is a wonderful way to let the best wines be served with dinner for two without having an entire bottle.

"My husband and I chose JoLe for our Valentine's Day dinner and we picked a winner! The ambiance was warm and inviting, servers were very helpful and best of all, the food was magnificently flavorful. First, we had some lovely bubbly while we were deciding what to have. Then,we loved the variety on the menu and chose 4 plates paired with wines. The pairings were excellent, and our only qualm was that the wines could have been slightly higher quality. My mouth waters just thinking about the meal. It was great!"
