Mexique is a full service restaurant offering modern Mexican cuisine with a French influence. French recipes and cooking techniques during the French occupation of Mexico in the 1860's became an important element in the evolution of modern Mexican gastronomy. Come join us at Mexique as we introduce this historical blending of French and Mexican cuisine with a modern personal style by Executive Chef Carlos Gaytan in a fun and casual environment.

"Mextique was mediocre at best. First, they do not have a full bar. They only serve beer and wine. My fiancé and I went here for Cinco de Mayo and were really hoping for a well made margarita, no dice. We ordered two appetizers and split an entrée. Plating is not their forte. Everything looked very muddled together. The sauces were served in puddles on the plate. We ordered the asada and it was tough and dry. All together it was an experience I wish we could have avoided. We will not be returning."

"Like Rick Bayless, Chef Carlos Gaytan is serving Mexican cuisine with refinement and creativity. I was very impressed with my meal here. Service was attentive and friendly and every dish was delicious, from the cochinitas rilletes and a strikingly pungent garlic soup with pickled radishes to start the meal, to a hearty and delicious rack of lamb accompanied by braised lamb shoulder sope and sweet and spicy eggplant topped with sheep's feta for my entree. Several of the dishes intrigued me and were unlike anything I'd ever seen on a menu before. Based on the excellent meal I had here, I plan on returning soon to try more. This is one of the most affordable Michelin-starred restaurants in town and definitely deserves the honor."

"The food is nice presented, but just okay in taste. Beef tartare was very spicy, interesting with the avocado. Skatewing was good, not great. Karen, our waitperson, was excellent. As to the noise, I had requested a quiet table, which we did get. it's #13, in the window. Towards the back of the restaurant, it gets very, very noisy."

"We went for Sunday Brunch. The only issue I can list was the fact that I had to make a choice between so many interesting options. I thought I had my mind made up, and then I turned the menu over.....

"Brunch is my favorite meal of the week, so I am always looking for new places to try out. Found this place online--the menu looked great and appropriately priced, so I invited a group of friends to try it out. The quality, flavor and presentation of the food was fantastic (you must try the housemade chorizo sopes!)and I believe everyone cleaned their plates (all of whom are from different countries with different palates--Australia, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Mexico, and Spain)! The staff was also very accomodating of our large group--which grew twice. I was surprised by the lack of other people there at the time, but perhaps it was because it was the day before Easter. Highly recommend and will return!"

"We opted for the tasting for the whole table, even though we weren't required to, and it made for an expensive evening. The food was as advertised, Mexican with a French touch, certainly a new experience. With six courses, a couple of them substantial, it was a bit too much food for the older members of our family party. At first I was a bit puzzled by the fact that, even though more than wine and beer were offered, only one tequila-based cocktail was available - however that one was perfectly attuned to the food that followed so it became part of the whole dining experience. We were quite surprised and happy that the chef-owner came to our table to ask about our experience. A great addition to the Chicago dining scene."

"To quote my colleague's phrase during dinner, "the meal was shockingly good!" We all had the tasting menu. Each course was presented and described very well, but the treat was eating! The balance of flavors was just right, from a sweet and savory pork belly to lamb chops with just enough heat to appreciate. Dessert came too quickly, but I was just comfortably full (whereas some tasting menus will leave you in search of a taco truck!). As it was Tuesday, another unexpected bonus was that all wine by the bottle was half price. Our server did not disappoint with his recommendations.
I have already booked Easter brunch with my family. I look forward to returning to see how the menu and food evolve. I trust Chef Carlos Gaytan to delive"

"Flavors were excellent, especially the poblano-leek soup. Portion sizes for the Chef's Week menu seemed just a little small -- we're not fans of "big food," but one more bite in each portion (especially the desserts) would have been welcome. That said, the desserts were a bit disappointing. The avocado pastry cream sounded interesting, but the texture was sort of gummy or pasty, rather than creamy. The crepes on the chocolate enchilada would have been more enjoyable if they were crispier. In spite of these small mis-steps, I would recommend Mexique."

"The food is fantastic - very inventive and incredibly refreshing. Duck was absolutely delicious - a couple of seared pieces, a leg confit, with very good mix of mexican/french flavors. The lamb was cooked perfectly, still pink medallion. The Pork belly/scallops were also amazing. The belly + cabbage in one bite was the most delicious thing I have had in a while. Scallops were a little overdone - forgettable but it was the only miss. Skate wing also beautifully done. Going back to appetizers - the tartare was tasty. Mussels also very good, although the chorizo flavors are a little lost in the cream sauce."

"would not go back. food was over priced and portions were small. $13.95 for barely a cup of potato/pepper soup is outrageous. the duck came well cooked, but without any seasoning. had to ask for salt and pepper. have no idea what brings people there other than just to try it ONCE. the wine was on sale, but were out of stock on the one we asked for, got a substitute but really, completely out of your recommended wine on a tuesday?"

"Food was exceptional. Pork Belly sandwich was out of this world. Went for Chef Week, did not end up ordering off the Chef Week menu as it was lunch and was not hungry enough for 3 courses. "Mexique has always been a very good meal but with now it is even more gourmet meeting its Michelin one star. The food is consistent, the staff is personable and helpful. It is mexican like you have never had it. The french influence brings out the best in Mexican flavors and ingredients. We will go back soon"

"We decided to have dinner here for two as i had being hearing a lot of buzzing and read all positive reviews. The food was extraordinary. We did not like were we were seated. The table was right by the door and next to the booth of the lady that assigns your seat. The Restaurant did not have margaritas or micheladas. I find these drinks at all Mexican restaurants. They mostly have wines from Argentina and France. Limited drink selection. Considerable drive from the loop."

"Mexique has its ups and downs. The positive is the food. Outstanding. The skirt steak was really good, and the appetizers, although small, were tasty. One negative is their wine menu. That needs to be diversified and there needs to me more wine options on the list. In addition, the Red Sangria was not good at all. Also, we were there early, yet had to wait to be seated, yet people who came in after us were seated before us. We were told to go to the bar to wait, which we did, yet no one came to offer us a drink at the bar. However, after we were seated, people were at the bar, and they were offered drinks. The food was good, but I am not sure we will be back because the negatives outweighed the positives, for us."

"We went to Mexique when it first opened and returned recently for a birthday dinner. We were hoping that the Michelin star had not ruined this wonderful place. We were delighted to find the same creative and fabulous food, an attentive staff and chef/owner and very reasonable prices for the quality and stardom. It is one of our Chicago favorites. The puerco with pumpkin seeds and mole, the cobia with vanilla sauce (yes, subtle vanilla, and it relly works) were fabulous. Try this wonderful, if slightly out of the way gem."

"It was a 5 star experience. Of special note is the staff--they all seem to really enjoy what they are doing. Everyone who contacted us was upbeat and cheerful. They all seemed to be having a great time making the restaurant go and helping the diners have a wonderful experience."

"We went there for a late lunch, so the place was wide open. Then owner came out and greeted us; the service was attentive but not overbearing.
The tacos are quite simply delicious. We were offerred a chance to mix and match from the taco menu; we chose the crispy chicken and al pastor pork. They were s good we ordered another plate.
This is an excellent place for high quality mexican food, at a reasonable price."

"Visited for the first time with high expectations based on previous reviews and Michellin star rating. The food did not disappoint. I had the Cordero which was outstanding. The sweet and spicy eggplant which accompanied the dish was the most flavorful I have ever had and was a perfect complement. My girlfriend had the Puerco con Mole and could not have loved it more. Service was disjointed at times, but always very friendly and accomodating. The wine list will have something for everyone with numerous reasonably priced selections. The dessert enchiladas are not to be missed. We were also pleasantly surprised by a visit from Chef Carlos towards the end of our dinner and pledged to return soon, which we will."

"This was my 3rd visit to Mexique and once again, everything was delicious!!! We went with friends who had never dined there before and I was a little disappointed in the service this trip. It was as if a waiter didn't show up and the busboy was filling in and he had no knowledge of the menu or any answers to questions our friends asked.
My only complaint about Mexique is that every time I have been there I end up at a table with wobbly legs. It's not hard to get a power tool and make sure the screws are tight and the tables don't wobble or slant when guests sit at them. A Michelin star restaurant shouldn't have guests sitting at wobbly tables!"

"I took my wife here for her birthday and had an amazing dinner. We had the tasting menu; the food was artfully prepared and the flavors were incredible. Each course was on par with or exceeded other Michelin restaurants in terms of quality, flavor and overall presentation.
The chef, Carlos Gaytan, came out and visited each table. I told him it was our first visit and we were two courses into the tasting menu. He was more excited than we were to have us there and to share his food with us. He came back later to see how the rest of the menu was going and what we liked the most. It made us feel welcomed and special.
The entree's were reasonably priced and if it was in our neighborhood, Mexique would be a regular stop for us."
