Straits Restaurant - Santana Row
Singapore for almost 200 years has been at the crossroads of Southeast Asia, where many cultures and nationalities live, work and more importantly, eat together. Singapore's cuisines logically reflect this cultural diversity. The four major culinary cultures -- Malaysian/Indonesian, Chinese, Indian and Nonya -- are in fact a blend of each other, creating a new cuisine that is unique and more complex in flavors and fragrances. Straits offers a menu that features the complexity of all these Singaporean cuisines in chef Chris Yeo's unique interpretation. This beautiful Santana Row location opened in January 2003.

"If you’re looking for tasty food & an energetic nightclub style venue- Straits is it! Do not come here if your group is looking to chat. This restaurant is strickly a place to see & be seen. On a positive note, I can’t say enough about the food. My group enjoyed shared several small plates. The Crispy Rice Beet Salad, Crab Cakes, Straits Frites & Singapore Beef & chicken Satay Sticks we delicious!! The only down side to this restaurant was the music level. IT WAS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LOUD!!! We had a great deal of trouble hearing our server & vice versa- not to mention each other. It’s really a shame cause the food is wonderful, but if you can’t enjoy the people your with, it makes for an unpleasant dining experience."

"My family came here to celebrate my daughter's 20th birthday & as food fanatics, I am sure they will definitely love this new experience. I am a regular to this place so I advised getting the small plates so that they can taste most of the food offered. THEY LOVED IT &we devoured every food brought faster than they can set in on the table. The taste varied from item to item and every plate provided an awesome experience. Though the restaurant was packed that night, the service was fast and quick. It was easy to find our server so we can have either some more water, refill of drinks, or whatever we needed. The server was also very pleasant and attentive. Going to back to this place is not a hard decision - will always win hands down!!!"

"Noise level was high. It was difficult to hear and carry a conversation at the table. Dishes arrived at different times and rice was forgotten to be served with the dishes. It took some time to get a hold of our server to get the rice."

"The food was great (brunch), but the service was average at best. Our server was not at all attentive, forgot several of our requests for refills, extras, etc., and didn't seem to care at all about our dining experience. "The curry sauce is to die.. Every dish has distinct and delicious flavor. In the evening, it can be too loud inside with the bar music but great atmosphere. We sat outside at a not so comfortable table with forgetful service but enjoyed the night life on Santana Row. We go for the food!"

"The waitresses at Straits were very unprofessional. Our drinks stayed empty for a while. They were more interested in entertaining the men at the bar. Ours left another couple alone for more than half an hour. They sat two men next to us, and didn't even take their drink order for at least 15 minutes. The men and the couple were contemplating walking out. I think that whoever does the hiring at Straits needs to worry less about how pretty the girls are, and more about if they will serve the customers with competence. I used to be a server, and usually tip at least 20%. Our girl on received 12%."

"Moving on to our second venue of the evening with my girlfriends, Straits Café never fails to impress. The food and service both great. This is one of our fave hang-out places in Santana Row.
I might just note that both our cocktail drinks: Mint Citrus Vodka and the Pomegranate Lemon Drop were extremely SWEET! We had to request for extra cubes to tone it down. Our other girlfriends ordered wine."

"Food was pretty good, service was terrible. We had a group reservation for 9. They did not seat us until 45 minutes after the reservation telling us that "Open Table reservations give priority over the wait list, but do not guarantee anything." and estimating an extra 10 minute wait. In addition, two of our diners did not receive their meals in any resemblance of a timely manner, one received it as the dishes were being cleared away, the other NEVER RECEIVED HIS MEAL. This happened after the waiter checked in with us 2-3 times to make sure we were all taken care of. The meal ordered? The night's special which was the waiter's favorite and everyone had been very popular all night.
None of us will be returning."

"We had reservations for 6:30 PM on Friday night. We arrived about 10 minutes early and were able to be seated immediately at an outside patio table. The food was delicious, but the service was poor; both of our entrees were wrong, and my drink was delivered after the appetizers."

"Really small portions with a really high price tag! Food was good but nothing worth the prices. Just because they are located in Santana row makes it seem like the raise their prices at least 10%
I took my parents (who were visiting from out of the country) for their 35th wedding anniversary and asked the waiting staff if they could do something special for dessert... Like a candle on the cake or something. Our waitress was soooo overwhelmed she 1) had too many tables 2) was running around all the time which made her hard to get a hold of 3) was so busy she took forever to take our order 4) forgot about the candle on dessert 5) took forever to bring the check"

"Excellent food, but service--although friendly--was substandard. How hard is it to get a dozen oysters?? At Straits, not so easy.
Scenario: ordered a dozen oysters, 15 min. later they brought half-dozen; returned order, and 10 min. later original server brought the same half-dozen; returned order, and 10 min. later the full dozen arrived! When bill arrived, charged for 2 half-dozen orders (@ $16 each, total of $32)--full dozen cost $26. They finally got it right, but it was a looooong evening. Strongly recommend the spareribs on the small plates menu......really, really delicious."

"I picked Straits b/c I thought it would be a great vibe for my intended guests in town from LA. The food was so-so, not quality, nothing to write home about. The evening's service was AWFUL and an absolute EMBARRASSMENT!!! I had a celebrity guest dining in after his show. He was in disguise to ensure private dining experience. Waiter didn't arrive until 15 minutes after we sat down, then the food delivery was rushed, waiter didn't stay near for us to locate him when we needed service, then while my guests were still eating the lights went full on to rush us out due to late hour closing time, our waiter lands the bill on top our our raw oysters that we've yet to completely consume, just all in all bad restaurant etiquette and service."

"Trendy cocktail bar, yuppy and cozy...Finally a decent place for young professionals to go out after work and have a good time. It is a vibrant place with good music and excellent (Singaporean) fingerfood.

"I had been to Straits once before, and it had been fantastic. This second visit was awful. We arrived, claimed our reservation, and were escorted to a table. The music had been loud the last visit (as I understand it is also a bar), but it was deafening this time. We placed our orders, and waited for our food. The chicken curry arrived, but no rice. Fifteen minutes later, the salmon arrived: still no rice. The portions were tiny (Family style is an overstatement: the family size is only big enough to split for two people), and without the rice, there was nothing to make a meal out of. Eventually we had to get two separate people to flag down to get us our meals, including reheating our curry. And when dessert came, only one spoon. Awful."

"The Straits specializes in shared smaller sized dishes - which I like. A wide and tasty variety of foods, most of which have an Asian heritage. Check out the menu and you will see what I mean.
It's a big restaurant and both times I have been there for dinner, the place is full or very close to that. A very vibrant atmosphere, but still not overly noisy.
Recommend."

"I really like this place, dont get me wrong. And i want to be as fair and unbiased as I can be in writing this review. I have been to this place three times, and i have to point out that every time the Hostess that I have met at the entrance have given me ( and my friends ) the coldest most unwelcoming greeting each time i step in. Once they show me to my table, the waitress and the food is absolutely awesome. But the hostess, I have met two of them during the three time that I have went. I just felt like they hate me for something i dont know about. I always end up spending the first 20 mins of my conversation talking about how bad was the experience coming to the table.

"We had a great time at Straits. I would strongly recommend Straits to a young trendy crowd. The food was great but they did get a little delay in the kitchen with one of our items but the servers were on top of the situation, and made everything work out fine. Give it a try and you'll enjoy it. Great food, great service and even better company that always a receipt for success."

"The drape at the entry is kind of tacky. The hostess seemed preoccupied and not very attentive to the guests at the front desk causing people bunch up at the front door. Ask for a table away from the front desk because of the crowding of people when it's busy and the cold wind blowing through the front door. The music playing is on the loud side so it may make it difficult for a pleasant conversation. The table service was very good and meals served in a timely manner. The food was very good."

"The food was very good. I had salmon and my husband had sea bass. The flavors were unique and amazing. We did the tuna tower as an appetizer that,too, was very tasty. The drinks were different, a lemon grass mohito and the golden mule (made with ginger beer)and again very tasty.
Indoors was way too loud with techno music for my taste. Obviously catering to a younger crowd. We sat outside and it was much nicer. You could actually have a conversation.
The service left alot to be desired. It took a long time to receive the appetizer after ordering, fortunately we weren't in any hurry. However it took even longer to get the entrees and I got mine a full 10 minutes before my husband and that was after flagging down a busboy and our waitress."

"We decided to try the brunch menu because the food selections looked interesting. Bad idea. The hash dish was overly spiced and was ground rather than chopped. It tasted burned. The crab cakes had excesuve breading mixed in and were over spiced. There were no rolls or toast offered the dishes with salad and poached eggs. It's possible that the regular asian dishes taste better. We also found the service very uneven. We will not be returning."

"The enterance to the resturant is not inviting. It's dark draps and torn entryway carpet set a bad stage upon first looks.
The server was young and friendly. However, he wasn't engaged in the process when we were ordering. I actually had to say "Hello" because he was gazing toward the hostess area twice while I was asking questions about the menu."

"We had a reservation and were ten minutes late. The girls at the front desk were very snooty and not friendly at all. But after we were seated, our waiters were very efficient, friendly yet professional (too bad they don't provide that kind of training to the girls at the hostess desk).
The food was good... they serve family style so it's a good place to go with a group of people.
The ambiance was nice but the music from the bar was way too loud for decent conversation at the dinner table. If the noise level weren't so loud it would have been a much better dining experience."
