Tamarine is a contemporary Vietnamese restaurant that features the light but flavor-intensive culinary delicacies of Vietnam. The restaurant offers a menu based on small plates, promoting the Vietnamese tradition of the 'shared' meal in which food is shared and enjoyed with those close. Tamarine's small plate entrees are enjoyed with the pairing of a variety of aromatic, flavor infused rice, designed to be mixed and matched to create a truly unique flavor experience. Along with culinary delicacies of Vietnam, the restaurant showcases the works of emerging artists from Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries. Semi-annual exhibits will close with a cocktail event to auction the art. Proceeds will be donated to La Maison Chance, an orphanage in Saigon, Vietnam.

"The wine list is spectacular and spectacularly expensive. It does not fit with the rest of the restaurant. I suspect it is the owner's private collection and he is showing off.
Drink beer or BYOB and pay the $25 corkage fee.
Other than that, a wonderful dining experience. Our waiter was very helpful and not shy about suggesting alternatives and additions to our selections, with reasons."

"The service was actually very slow. We ordered from the Prix Fix menu that stated you could eat lunch in an hour, but we were the first ones in the restaurant and had to wait for our 2nd round of dishes and the check. Our lunch ended up being about an hour and 45 minutes!"

"We were completely delighted by our dining experience. The waiter was wonderful about discussing food items. The food was delicious and very unique and memorable. The ambience was delightful and our spot in the restaurant was quiet--we were on the other side of a partition behind the bar. The music from that area was very subdued by the time it reached our ears. We look forward to a return visit."

"In ten or so visits to this restaurant over the years, it has never failed to deliver. I consider some, if not many, of their dishes to be better than that served by Slanted Door. The Shaking Beef, for example, is much tastier than what Slanted Door serves, and in this instance, I tasted them nearly back-to-back.
It is incontrovertibly one of the two best restaurants in Palo Alto, even if that is not
necessarily saying much."

"I've been to Tamarine many times and I always have a great time, I eat well, and meet people. I recommend it for a first date or any-time late night casual hangout. It is easy to talk to people and drinks are excellent."

"Six of us enjoyed a wide variety of tastes & textures! Ayhan was a very helpful server. Appetizers of Salt & Pepper Calamari, Shrimp Cupcakes (what a concept) and Ha Long Bay Soup were a great intro to the menu. Tamarine Prawns, Clay Pot Cod, Lemongrass Bass, Shaking Beef were, obviously, a diverse, eclectic choice of entreés, accompanied by sides of Curried Long Beans (tender but still with a bit of bite), Empress Rice (preparation finished at our table ... really good!) and Coconut Rice (went really well with the Clay Pot Cod). Wine list tends to be pretty "upscale to VERY upscale"! How about '06 La Tache - $1500.00? Found a very nice Sauvignon Blanc & Merlot in the $35 range."

"I think Tamarine has just about the best shaking beef anywhere. It is succulent, flavorful and tender. Their Ha Long Bay soup is also a must try as well. The service and ambiance is very relaxing and inviting. One of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants."

"We had our anniversary dinner here and had a fabulous time. Tamarine's staff made a number of small but significant gestures to help us make the occasion memorable. I had ordered flowers to be delivered to our table, and the staff had the flowers on our table before we arrived. They also had put a special card personalized to us for our occasion. Overall, they helped make the night one we'll remember for a long time."

"I've been to Tamarine 5 or 6 times with my wife, and it is one of our standard 'nice night out' favorites. This last visit, the service was a bit worse than usual and I wasn't a huge fan of the fried 5-spice chicken. We were somewhat tucked away in a back rooms, which may have contributed to the poor service, but I think it may just have been a new waiter or an off night. Even though the chicken wasn't great, the Roti was excellent (as always), the corn & lemongrass soup was great, and the lava cake was a good example of the type.

Minor problems aside, I'll be back again and hoping for a return to the usual excellent food and service."

"Food is always good at Tamarine. On this night service was very slow. The restaurant was not as busy as usual so this didn't seem to be a reason for the slow service. We will certainly go back as we usually dine at this restaurant several times during the year."

"Dishes were all just shy of great. All too sweet! Dinner at the bar was good, but our bartender was too much personality and not enough service. Wine list is awesome, so will be back for a glass soon, but I'll order carefully and maybe take a table, not the bar. Tamarine is a good bet for Palo Alto, but I can think of 20 places in SF that I'd rather be, especially if I want Vietnamese food."

"I was disappointed. I was expected more delicate meal. It was not bad, but I could not find the lemongrass in the lemongrass sea bass for instance.

"Tamarine provides Palo Alto diners excellent food in a elegant and impeccable cadre. Service is also outstanding and I want to come back often to try every dish there.
The price of the dishes is moderate. My only recommendation is to decrease the price of the wines per glass. Unfortunately the price of a glass of a so-so wine (red or white) is often higher than the price of a succulent dish. I would recommend for beverage a glass of their exotic lemonade."

"It was my husband's birthday, and a small box with dessert goodies was on the table, along with a birthday note. The waiter made good recommendations for both wine and main dishes. "This is a rave, but it didn't start out that way. Our party of three included one who is hard of hearing. We were shown to a narrow room with small tables on one side and a party of about 20 on the other. The din was distracting even for those of us whose hearing was (at the beginning of the meal) still intact. We complained, and rather than being defensive, the waiter and maitre d' assured us of a better table as soon as one became available, and meanwhile we were welcome to sit at our noisy table and have drinks and appetizers. After the drink, the noise was less unpleasant, and the new table and appetizers were ready at the same time. The meal was flawless. Love the food, love the service,love Tamarine."

"We have eaten at Tamarine at least a dozen times, and this is the first time I was really disappointed. The chef's tasting menu was only three courses + dessert. Very unimaginative, they were out of a couple of dishes, small portions, not filling. It would have been a $50 dinner for which we were charged $75 per head. And no band/music or any NY eve festivities. Very dull evening."

Originating from Los Angeles, I'd find it hard, if not impossible to find comparable food, of a comparable quantity, at that price in Southern California. I would have given this 4.5 stars if there was an option, but since there is not, I give it 5 stars. Recommend."

"The first time to Tamarind in many years. The service was very nice and imformative. The cocktails were perfect -- a mojito, a martini and some wine. The food selection was excellent. We had the tuna tartare which was fresh and nicely diced and served with herbs. The shrimp cakes were unique and savory. The lamb chops were tender. The mushroom soup was good but not amazing. The Empress Rice was unique and good. It was a little oily. Overall, the meal was wonderful and we will return."

"I had an excellent experience at Tamarine this past Saturday evening. I hadn't visited the restaurant in a while, but wanted to take a friend from San Francisco who is a foodie here. "I love the sea bass there, but this time we tried the snapper, too, and it was TO DIE FOR. The tuna tartare was also excellent (very, very fresh). The only slight disappointment was the salt and pepper calamari — we found it to be a bit on the chewy side, which is unusual for this restaurant. Still and all, a wonderful meal. I will definitely be having the snapper on my next visit!"

"Went there for lunch with 2 good friends. The ambiance and the food were equally good. We ordered three entrees and an appetizer sampler. The lamb chop and the clay pot cod fish were exceptional. The lamb chop was tasty and the portion were generous. The clay pot cod fish is one of the best we had. It was cooked to perfection and the sauce was exceptional. The only complaint is that the portion is a little too small. The other entree we have is the Tamarine Shrimp. We were a little disappointed. The shrimps were over cooked and the tamarine sauce is a bit too sour. The appetizer platter (taro roll, spring roll, egg roll, and papaya salad) was good."
