Tamarine
Tamarine is a contemporary Vietnamese restaurant that features the light but flavor-intensive culinary delicacies of Vietnam. The restaurant offers a menu based on small plates, promoting the Vietnamese tradition of the 'shared' meal in which food is shared and enjoyed with those close. Tamarine's small plate entrees are enjoyed with the pairing of a variety of aromatic, flavor infused rice, designed to be mixed and matched to create a truly unique flavor experience. Along with culinary delicacies of Vietnam, the restaurant showcases the works of emerging artists from Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries. Semi-annual exhibits will close with a cocktail event to auction the art. Proceeds will be donated to La Maison Chance, an orphanage in Saigon, Vietnam.

"Friday night, 8pm, every single table was occupied. Waited 25 mins before we were even greeted by the server. Appetizers came quickly, but entrees took forever to come out. It took so long we did not even check the dessert menu. Food-wise, shaking beef was very good, fried oyster appetizers also good. Skip the Bahn Mi roti, deep fried mess."

"Ordered the signature dish "shaking beef," and it's not exactly shaking beef. I'm vietnamese and while the beef was tender, the dish was off on the flavor. Also ordered the clay pot cod fish, and definitely not how clay pot fish tastes.

"Fabulous food. When you are the small party and happen to go on a night when they have several large groups, the small party gets the short end. We had reservations at 8 pm and did not place the order until 9:10 pm. Two items never showed up."

"I loved this restaurant since it opened and recommended it to everyone until my recent visit.... The food used to be awesome -- flavorful, non-greasy, simply well-done up-scaled Vietnamese done perfect.
My recent visit for lunch on 5/10/13 left me really disappointed and am afraid I might never go back, which saddens me since I've been going there since the first opened. The food was completely mediocre...if I closed my eyes, I could have been eating at a greasy neighborhood fast-food asian joint. The flavors were extremely muddled, and the fried items were greasy (e.g., the roti was soggy...every bite was oily...and the dipping sauce tasted heavy and lacking the typically curried punch). I'm guessing they've lost their orig. staff."

"We chose Tamarine because it was listed on Google as one of the best restaurants in Palo Alto and because the menu looked interesting. Also, the art was a draw. "Sunday was our first time to Tamarine and we were celebrating my fiancée's birthday. The ambiance was a fit from the beginning. We started with the Tamarine Taste and it was excellent. During this, we ordered our entrees. After our appetizer was cleared we waited 25 minutes for dinner. 25 minutes! Our server gave us minimum attention though out the entire evening. Though his accent was charming, his attitude was a bit arrogant. Finally we politely asked how is was going in the kitchen. By the time our food arrived my noodles were soggy and our mood dim. There wasn't an apology or acknowledgment that the timing was so OFF.
We would love to try Tamarine again. Maybe."

Please, don't go straight from deep fryer to the table and not tell the customers "this is scalding" :-(

"This is the second time I have gone to Tamerine while visiting Palo Alto. The food was just a good as the last visit, delicious. We ate family style which was the perfect way to be able to try a lot of dishes. The pork belly dish was a huge hit, but all of the dishes were acceptional. The basil calamari and spring rolls were especially good appetizers. Of course the lava cake for dessert made our chocoholics swoon!"

"I enjoyed my recent meal, ordering the "Power Lunch." The green papaya salad was outstanding, and the swordfish was also excellent, although possibly the smallest piece of main-course fish I've ever been served in a restaurant. It was accompanied by white rice with nuts and peas, which was not described on the menu, or I would have asked for a substitution. I do not eat most starchy carbs, and so did not eat the rice."

"Tamarine had always been a favorite of mine ever since they opened. Even bought artwork from there in the past. Hadn't been there in a few years after moving away, but was really disappointed when I returned. Saturday night reservation @ 8pm for 4. Excessively noisy there (more than I ever remembered). 20 minute delay in getting seated. Waiter didn't show up for way too long. Ordered Shaking Beef, Fried Tofu, Long Beans, Sea Bass, all of which I've had many times before. Food felt heavy/greasy, maybe even some MSG as a number of us got MSG headaches after. Really disappointed. I won't write them off completely since everyone can have an off night, but will be ore wary next time."

The coating on the calamari was too thick and bready. They should take lessons from tempura. However, the sauce was flavorful. The black cod was slightly overcooked and lacked crispness on the outside. The mam ruoc pork was wonderfully spiced, but a little heavy on salt (? soy sauce)."

"Three of us had lunch and ordered soup plus a variety of appetizers and an entree, the way one might in a Chinese restaurant. Glad we did, because we were able to experience so many fantastic dishes. Wow, what flavor! The service was friendly and attentive, without being the least bit fussy or pretentious (I am uneasy with fussy and pretentious). Our reservation was for two, and the hostess handled the extra person with grace and a welcoming attitude. If it is a special occasion or an important business lunch, be sure to request the back room, as it is quieter with a more formal ambiance."

"We had a party of 13 and they seated us in a great location next to the windows. The restaurant was lively but we could hear well.
We came in separate parties of 5 so the servers did not approach the table until everyone was there. The early birds would have preferred ordering wine earlier. The food was the best. We ordered family style and I loved the fresh calamari. The taro egg rolls were a big hit as well as the chicken skewers for appetizers. The Cod beat out the Sea Bass for best main dish. I also liked the wide noodles and beef. Service during the meal was good. I will definitely return, especially for a large party."

"Food was good but to be honest, it didn't stand out compared with some of the pretty lower priced strip mall Thai/burmese food you can get around in the bay area. All around, nothing special. Menus came but they had food on them and the edges were worn. The waiter got everything right but was a bit boisterous for us. It's definitely the "it" restaurant for Silicon Valley with fancy drinks and on a good spot in University. I do have to say the Roti appetizer is very good with the curry sauce. I would go just for this and a fancy drink."
