Marliave
The Marliave, Boston's fourth oldest restaurant, has a tireless commitment to house prepared cuisine. Our orange, lemon, lime, and grapefruit juices are fresh squeezed daily. All breads, desserts, sauces, pastas, ice cream, and stocks are made daily in house and are prepared to order. The Marliave utilizes local fresh vegetables, fruits, natural raised animals, and the finest imported ingredients to create our food and drink menus.

"Great ambiance, felt like it was a piece of history. Henry's Soup (French onion soup with short rib pieces) was incredible, as was the Pinot Noir. The Caesar was weak, literally just a stack of uncut Romanies leaves with a little but of dressing spread on top- for $10. Kind of a joke, but the soup was more than worth it. The service was horrendous so if you go, go for the food."

"We went to Marliave after my daughter's graduation. She had eaten there before because a friend of hers had recommended it, and she wanted to go again. The drinks and food were prepared with care and were delicious!. Our waitress was attentive and very pleasant. With all the choices of restaurants to go to in Boston, she picked a winner!"

"I really like the Marliave for lunch, especially in summer. Its tucked-away location always surprises people, though the brand name is familiar to all Bostonians over age 50 or so. The outdoor tables are quiet and off the street. The ambiance is way better than its parent, the Grotto, which always makes me want to redecorate. The Marliave food is good, and the service is friendly. A high-quality, all-purpose lunch place (meaning for a great variety of guests, from teenagers to visiting dignitaries). A little overpriced but not intolerably so."

"Hadn't been to Marliave in years and forgot how historic and lovely it is. It has a great view of downtown and the lovely old architecture of the buildings and looking out the window surrounded by flower boxes and tucked into a side street it feels like Europe. So does the helpful professional waitstaff who don't rush you. There's everything here from sandwiches to full entrees and nice wine to boot. It's a great place-wasn't noisy or crowded on an early Saturday night"

"We were sat at a quiet, corner window table in an otherwise empty restaurant. The hostess was wonderful. She was spacing other incoming guests at comfortable distances apart instead of pushing guests into the section of the only server on. We had a fantastic brunch, overlooking a courtyard, the food was delicious. Cocktails took a little, but again with the excellent service, the server acknowledged the delay, apologized, and we went on to drink some delicious and well balanced drinks. Next time we are in the area, we are stopping in."

"We went for an early dinner after a matinee show. There was a nice specialty drink menu which used fresh squeezed juices. We all liked our appetizer, rarebits, and dinner. If you go for dinner after 5:00 your dinner is presented under a Cloche cover! We had the truffles and coffee for dessert Yum!"

"Last time we were in Boston this restaurant came highly recommended. We were disappointed when learning that they were completely booked for the night, and we couldn't get a table. This time, I made the reservation a month in advance. It was my sister and I, and my daughter. My daughter is 16 months. There was really nothing on the menu appropriate for children, so I ordered the hamburger to share with her. She was being a picky toddler, though, and wouldn't eat much of the burger. She was, however eating the tomatoes from it. I asked the waitress for one more tomato slice, and her response was, "I'll see if I can get one". Huh? It was a tomato! She did eventually bring over 3 tomato slices. I got charged $3 for them though!"

"Though food was very good, menu was limited. I haven’t been here for some time, and remember the menu selections offered considerably more choice. I miss the Italian standards. Each menu section offered about 6-8 choices. I strongly suggest, especially those who haven’t been for awhile, to go online and preview the menu/entree items to see if they will suit your tastes for the night.

"went for restaurant week with a group of 6. I was able to move my reservation up from 9:30 to 6pm, and got upgraded from a booth downstairs to a table upstairs which was much nicer ambiance for a sitdown dinner. For my three courses I got the mussels (excellent!), beef wellington(good portion, a bit too rare for me. also the pastry underneathe was a bit undercooked and the mushrooms/foie gras was understated, but the accompanying sauce was good), and ice cream trio (should have asked was the day's selection was but we had fun guessing and came up with mint chip, caramel rum raisin, and strawberry swirl). The waitstaff were friendly and discrete. They also simultaenously uncovered our entrees which was a nice flair. Overall a good experience"

"Sunday Gravy with gnocchi was rated excellent as was the fresh Caesar Salad. Beef Wellington was cooked to perfection but woefully under-seasoned (Had to ask for S&P which I normally shy away from doing in a restaurant). Onion soup had great potential but stock needed to be more concentrated. Cheese plates were unattractive in their presentation with miniscule pieces of three cheeses and unimaginative accompaniments, such as untoasted bread??? Given that it was restaurant week, I won't allow this experience to cloud my overall impressions that Marliave, in general, is a very good restaurant."

Except for being asking whether I was done before clearing my plate (an indubitable yes), waitstaff stuck to fine dining etiquette, which is appreciated in a city where it is rare. Nevertheless, the restaurant was not "stuffy" & had a mixed crowd (perhaps because it was Restaurant Week). Bar area has a lively atmosphere, view of the kitchen, beautiful bar space, & classic French style, while upstairs dining has wall-to-wall windows with views of the city lights - more romantic and formal. Carpaccio exquisite; scallops plump & done perfectly with earthy mushrooms; beet salad sculpted like a tort - perhaps making the goat cheese taste custardy. Wine sizes confusing (mL and oz interchanged)"

"We had such an amazing meal at Marliave! Our server, Lindsey, was absolutely amazing. She gave us good food recommendations and was so friendly, even on a very busy night at the restaurant. The restaurant week menu was extensive and delicious. By far the best meal I've had at any restaurant participating in restaurant week. I will definitely be back to check out those dollar oysters!! "I was here for "Restaurant Week" and tried the 3-course special. I had escargot, steak frites, & a cheese plate for dessert. The food was great, the cheese plate was pretty ordinary. Their drink menu is something special - I'm usually traditional with a Sapphire Martini, but I took a chance and tried the "Bone Shaker" instead. It was wonderful -- if my tongue had been long enough I'd have licked the bottom of the glass. I also had a great red wine - a cab/syrah blend called The Sum. All in all, I'd return here again, there are several menu items and more drinks I want to try! I sat upstairs where it was quiet, I'm not sure downstairs is as quiet."

"We went for the Lunch restaurant week menu and it was an incredible deal. I started with the beet salad (great) and he had the meatball sliders which were incredibly tasteful and enjoyable. Then I had the Sunday Gravy which was really good (and usually $20, which was the cost of the entire lunch restaurant week prix fixe!) He had the steak frites which he enjyoyed as well. We finished with the brownie sundae and butterscotch pudding - the were both great! The service was spot on (lots of teamwork going on there) AND I found that the wine list both here and at Grotto is stellar. I have not had a glass of wine at either that I didn't enjoy and I have tried both $8 and $14 glasses.

"My husband and I came here for lunch on vacation and found the food to be quite delicious for restaurant week. We have had many restaurant week lunches and dinners and found the food perfectly prepared and the waitstaff was attentive. The escargot was cooked perfectly and the Sunday gravy was the best gnocchi I've ever had. I would definitely come here again whenever I'm in Boston!"

"The Marliave is an institution in Boston, it is one of the oldest in the city and that is saying something in a town this old. Even though it was our first time there, we will relish returning. The food was prepared just as we ordered and was cooked to perfection. All the people at our table were very happy with their order. I must say that the mussels were particularly wonderful, tender and packed with flavor."

"I went for restaurant week for lunch. Overall, the food was quite good - mac and cheese, risotto, escargot, desserts. The fried fish was overly oily, but the French fries with herbs were very good. Service was exceptional. The view on a sunny day was lovely in the upper dining room."

"I would have never known Marliave existed unless it was Restaurant Week. It is a hidden gem and the food was fantastic. This place fits a lot of people comfortably so we didn't feel like we were squished in one place. The food is very rich, and good portions, but was also pretty heavy, so don't come here if you want to eat healthy. It is definitely a treat to yourself or a great way to celebrate. I recommend taking visitors from out of town here, for sure!!"

"Marliave never fails to knock it out of the park during Restaurant Week. The lunch menu was loaded with choices straight from the regular menu (as it should be during RW!) with great options to suit everyone. Portion sizes are perfect-not skimpy. The waitstaff and hostess staff were very efficient and pleasant from arrival to departure. I felt our business was appreciated, and the kitchen enjoys making great food. Bravo!"

"My friends and I (we were a group of 8) had a wonderful time at Marliave this past Friday night. We loved the drink menu and everyone enjoyed their meal immensely. The oysters, mac and cheese and shrimp scampi were great. Our waitress was also timely and fun. I will definitely be back!"

"We went there for the $1 oyster. The host and waitress were rude and not attentive at all. When we told host that it was too windy at where our table was, she just ignored us. Waitress on other hand, constantly spilt stuff when she brought the food. She DIDN’T even bother to clean it up! Not all oysters were fresh."
