Bilbo Baggins
A casual local restaurant & pub with tasty food, unusual wines & beers from around the world, and friendly service. The green dragon pub sports 12 beers on tap with over 100 bottles from which to choose. Wines are offered by the glass or bottle with a full bar that offers unusual martinis as well as other libations. A fire place and 4 HDTVs add to the experience. Upstairs, guests find cozy tables located within 3 dining room areas. All menu selections are offered both in the pub and dining rooms. Experience a tantalizing tapas menu with a selection of cheeses, fire cracker shrimp and fresh calamari just to name a few. Visit us for lunch or dinner 7 days a week. Join us for a spectacular Sunday brunch which includes Frodo's french toast made from our homemade cracked wheat & raisin bread, a variety of omelets as well as other delicious brunch & lunch items. Located in Old Town Alexandria just 2 blocks from the river on Queen Street.

"The New Zealand "Hobbit Black and Tan" beer was the highlight of the meal. It was black on top and tan on the bottom. The bread was excellent. My sons liked the duck entrée and I had the sesame encrusted swordfish which was good. My gluten free wife had to make compromises to get a half decent meal. Many restaurants that do not have a gluten free menu think they are creating a solution by serving the entrée without the "sauce" that makes the item taste great, but is loaded with gluten (wheat, rye, barley). The deserts were fair and unremarkable."

"We were seated at 11:30 for Mothers Day Brunch. Our party consisted of two couples, and a set of 20 month old twins. We were seated upstairs, to the right of the stairs, in the first dining room on the left, at a six top table. The service was quick, unobtrusive, helpful, and good with the kids, who were seated at the end of the table. The tables are somewhat close together, which allowed our children to interact with the family at the table next to us, and contributes to the noise-level grade.
The food was amazing. I had the Monte Kristo, my wife had the raise bread French toast, and our kids shared a pancake platter. My wife also had a side of bacon. When Bilbo Baggins brings you a side, they bring a plate of amazing bacon."

"Bilbo Baggins has a relaxed atmosphere, excellent food and smooth service. The restaurant was very busy when we arrived. Despite this, we were immediately acknowledged and seated in a short time. There was no wait for service at our table and the food and drink were excellent. This was our second Mother's Day brunch there and third visit to the restaurant over all. The whole family loves it!"

"We were looking forward to our first visit to this restaurant - the menu and beer/bar selections are massive. However, the dining area is located up a narrow stairway and when we were settled in and trying to enjoy our dinner we were literally drowned out by a very noisy private party group located in the next small room of the restaurant. The problem is that no matter where you are on this level you can have your dining experience suffer from a noisy group. With regard to our food we enjoyed our appetizers and dinner selections very much - if you go, strongly recommend that you check with the restaurant in advance to see if they have booked a party group for the night/time you will be there."

"The food was ok, the menu has so much on there, you get tired of looking thru it. The cheese plate was good, but the portions were small for the price that you paid for it. The sauces for weak and not impressive at all. The shocker came with the bill. A heck of a lot for average food. We won't be going back. The service staff was friendly so that was a redeeming factor."

"We chose this kind of blindly because of the bear menu, and because it wasn't far from where we were staying in Alexandria. We were not disappointed!! The food was wonderful and the beer outstanding! The only negative was that it was noisy and it felt kind of cramped for space. It was a Saturday night and very crowded. However, I would go back again in a heartbeat."

"Went to Bilbo's Saturday evening, had a reservation at 6:30 but got there a little early. We had no problem getting in ahead of time. We ate up stairs where there was plenty of room and rather quiet, the downstairs bar area was hopping. Overall, the food and service was very good, the beer and wine selection was quite extensive. Our entire party enjoyed our meals, although nothing really stood out except the cilantro fries. Overall a very enjoyable experience, would go there again."

"Very nice small restaurant 3 blocks from King Street the main street in Old Town Alexandria. Parking is easy to find in the evenings - we found street parking right in front of the restaurant at no charge unlike streets closer to King St. We got seated right away, service was quick and friendly, and the food came out fairly quickly and was very very tasty. My grilled portabello chicken was delicious topped with roasted portabello mushroom cap and sundried tomato tapenade."

"This was our first time at Bilbo's and for Easter Brunch. For those who are familiar with the Hobbit -- it is fun to see all the pictures and special mentions on the menu. We hadn't realized that we could only order from the Brunch menu on Easter - but ultimately, everyone in our party of 6 found something to enjoy. The vegetarian omelet with avocado was delicious. Our server, Jen, was wonderful and came around often to make sure we were well taken care of. My only caution to first-timers would be that the 'terrain' is somewhat scary/intimidating for the 'over-50' crowd -- i.e. the stairs (up) to a lovely dining room and a somewhat sharp step "out" when you exit the front door. Otherwise - a very enjoyable experience."

"The Easter brunch specials were all delicious and large portioned. As usual, Bilbo Baggins' beer list was impressive and had something for everyone's taste. Despite the Easter rush, service was quick and polite and the wait between being seated and being served very short. "We went for Brunch and 4 out of 6 of our entrees were not good. Pancakes were rubbery, the Monte Cristo was burnt on one side and we had one person who counted 9 fish bones in her crab and salmon cake Benedict. Those who were listed as a having a side fruit salad received less fruit than those of us who didn't even have fruit mentioned on the menu and the Bloody Mary had more Old Bay and water than tomato juice in it and didn't even taste of alcohol. I would have probably had a better brunch (and cheaper) at a diner than here. Only thing this place has for it is that their beer menu is extensive, which is not worth the other issues."

"Have been several times before and always found the food and service outstanding. Not this time. Food was just okay and service was okay, but nothing special or nice about it . "I went to Bilbo Baggins for brunch, their stuffed french toast is delicious! My Mother ordered the pancake platter - comes with eggs, bacon, and sausage. She loved that too. Great service. The waiter was very attentive. Nice old building too."

The mixed grill seafood platter wasn't edible, and the linguine with seafood was rubbery without any flavor. They are supposedly two great dishes here. "The restaurant is not along the main restaurant path in downtown Alexandria which makes it feel like a great find. It was rather small with closely packed tables but it didn't feel crowded; that may have been because we got there before the dinner rush. They had a great selection of foods starting with a cheese plate which you could pick the cheeses you tried from a rather large selection.
While none of us had beer, if you're a connoisseur then this restaurant is definitely a place to check out. They had a huge selection of microbrews as well as a decent selection of wines and some cocktails as well.
Do beware that because it's a small place, it fills up quickly and without much buffering between tables can get loud."

"We drove from Charlottesville to celebrate a birthday and it was worth the drive! The food was excellent. Everything we tried was great, with lots of wonderful herbs and spices. One person ordered the Bilbo Burger, cooked medium, and it was cooked to perfection... He loved it. The waitstaff was courteous, friendly and helpful. I've already recommended it to friends who travel to Northern Va!"

"Wonderful extensive beer selection; love the samplers. Staff was friendly. Fun cozy atmosphere in upstairs dining rooms. For vegetarians, may not be the best place. A couple of salad choices. One hot vegetarian dish of mixed vegetables offered generous helpings and was tasty, especially the polenta, asparagus, and carrots. No protein."

"We went there for lunch after the Presidents' Day parade. It was a cold day so going into the bar with a log fire roaring was lovely. I live locally so have been to BB a few times and usually enjoy it. This time the service was good but the food was not as good as usual. I had a pizza and had to mop the oil off the top with a napkin...not good. Another of our group ordered the Reuben sandwich which was a bit light on for fillings. Nevertheless we enjoyed ourselves and will definitely go back. Everywhere can have an off day."

"On a recent Sunday brunch in mid-February: our waitress kept forgetting to bring stuff and turned surly when we reminder her of the missing items. The basket of beignets was tasty; the fettucine carbonara with poached egg was bad:the eggs were overcooked, the pasta came out dry and sticky around the edges of the plate because they weren't sauced properly but we couldn't get the waitress's attention to ask for a new one. The frittata was nice. Table next to us had ordered pancakes and french toast,m both dishes were huge looked really nice. Finally, charging at least $9 & up for a glass of wine is high considering the decidedly casual atmosphere of the room."

"I was stunned when my waitress delivered a huge bottle of beer to my table. Just for me. I couldn't belive that that was one bottle of beer. When I got the bill the bottle was $27. I was speachless. It would have been nice if the waitress, who could plannly see I was ordering a beer for myself, would have checked to make sure I knew it was so much beer. All the other beers on the menu were $6 silly me I ordered the only $27 bottle.
There was no way I could have drank all of it, I had one glass and the bottle still looked full. I will never go back to this place again, nor will I recamend it. I have been to restaruants that when you order an item, say side of fries, they actually tell you they are huge and suggest the small order, not here."

"I was in town for a conference and saw this place on both Open Table and Trip Advisor....the name caught my attention, and the menu looked good. I was making reservations for myself and two others who were from out of town, and everyone liked the place...Unique and good draught beer selections, too! My lamb wasn't the very best I have had, but it was fine. The house salad dressing is wonderful....service very friendly. No stuffy people here!"

"This appears to be a popular neighborhood cafe and if you're looking for a light supper, you probably won't be disappointed. I had the cinnamon pork loin and was disappointed. The pork loins were quite thin -- and tasteless. The "fluffy" mashed potatoes were good but were definitely not fluffy. The squash, however, was quite tasty. We both left kind of hungry even after ordering dinners AND dessert."

"We enjoyed our meal. I had the tuna and my wife the lamb. The portions were right sized and tasty. The wine had what I would describe as a remarkably low mark up. The upstairs was not too noisy for conversation. Several other parties had brought (very) small children who were well behaved and did not impair the dinning experience. We would go back. "I hadn't been to Bilbo Baggins for many, many years. I remembered the delicious, thick slicea of bread that arrived at the table as soon as one sits down - that still happens. We went during the Alexandria's restaurant week & had the fixed priced meal. There was 1 selection for an appetizer & 3 options for an entree. Dessert was from the menu. It would have been nice to have two appetizers to chose from, but the portabello and baked brie over pesto was really delicious. Our table server was attentive, but insisted on giving us the dessert menu when we were still eating our entrees. She picked up my water glass and put the menu underneath the glass. I found that odd that she couldn't wait until we finished our meal."

"The menu will take you around the world with a very eclectic offering of appetizers, main plates, pastas, desserts, and some specialties. Went there for restaurant week and was a bit disappointed to see how limited the 3-course restaurant week menu was. We ended up ordering off of the standard menu. Our food was good -- nothing spectacular, but good. Server was very attentive and helpful. The draught and bottled beer selection were fantastic and helped elevate the experience. We did not order wine, but the wine list was extensive, as well. I left remembering the experience as a whole and the beer I drank -- not the food, though as I said, it was solid, just nothing I came home bragging about."
