The Summer Shack is a fun, casual, restaurant. Specializing in New England Style Seafood. We offer 10 to 12 different types of oysters daily. Lobsters in varying sizes and styles including our signature clambake. Wonderful local grilled fish and crispy fried seafood. We do offer several non-seafood items as well. Steaks, burgers and award winning fried chicken. We are a children friendly restaurant and we can accommodate larger groups upon request.
"We came to Summer Shack for the seafood, not the ambience (knew it would be casual and family-friendly, no problem there). Given that seafood is the speciality, we expected that food would be much better than it was, especially since it's not cheap. We got the fried clams as an appetizer, and they were really good. But everything else was very average (crab soup, salad, fried fish plate). I'm glad we didn't get any of the pricier entrees. Glad we tried it out, but wouldn't go back."

"Summer Shack was nice but definitely not a classy place for dinner. Every dish was overpriced, even for Boston... it almost felt like a place designed to capture the most tourist dollars, but in Cambridge by Alewife? I just don't understand. I enjoyed my meal, but next time, I'd probably choose to go to a real New England seafood "shack". However, if you don't of know one and would like a larger, sanitized, commercialized version, this is the place for you."

"This place is understaffed. I went there for mother's day. The food was good but the service was pathetic. We had to tell the waiter what we wanted 3-4 times. He was so overwheled with work..."

"Summer Shack is the best. This is a go-to for our family on special occasions. The seafood is fresh and delicious, and the servers are attentive and knowledgeable. They are even friendly to kids, taking the lobsters out of the tank to show them. Highly recommend!"

"Went to Summer Shack on Mother's Day, which happened to be the day after my after family and I returned from an extended trip overseas. If you want to get in touch with great American food, and New England food, Summer Shack is the place. Starters of cornmeal fried oysters and Florida peel-n-eat shrimp were spot on -- the shrimp in particular were savory with a generous amount of salt, enough to make you want to just keep eating them. Then wife and daughter had fried clams and calamari -- the fried foods here are lightly done and super fresh. For myself I needed the baked scrod -- a back-to-basics meal for all of us -- which was perfectly done with garlicy breadcrumb topping and just-sweet-enough tomato. Plus, great service and energy!"

"Food was good - honestly well prepared seafood. Not fancy.
I ordered Bluefish, which if not perfectly fresh can be terrible. It was indeed very fresh, and properly prepared. Side dishes were good as well. Steamers shared at table - and were also properly prepared.
Service was very good, with a very busy waiter attending to our needs in a reasonable period of time. Room was noisy and seating was OK but a bit uncomfortable. But - this is not a 4 star place - but more like a step or two above a fried seafood joint."

"We went to Summer Shack to celebrate our son's 19th birthday and it was as fabulous as always. We choose to go to Summer Shack on special occasions because the food is always fresh and delicious and the service is always friendly and fast. We have been there many times over the years, and we have never had a dish we haven't loved. Their scallops are the best in Boston, hands down. We also love their healthy specials and lobster feasts. We are a seafood loving family, and Summer Shack has become our favorite restaurant for fresh seafood in the Boston area."

"Two members of my party ordered lobstah. Baked stuffed ok-but too much bread compared to seafood. Other had asian preparation-uninspired and hard to eat as claws were whole and covered in sauce. They kept slipping out of the nutcracker to open them. Lots of work."

"One of the few seafood restaurants in Cambridge - given the location it should have awesome fish. After going there about 5 times I can confidently say it is good but definitely not great. Fish is not fantastic and the cooking is average."

"Just a wonderful place. Great service. Nice fun atmosphere. It's unfortunate that the lobster was overcooked, making it rubber-like. Both myself and my daughter had lobster and it was the same. I know it was fresh, I saw the tanks. While everything was great, this one issue is enough for me to not recommend it or go back. It was so close to perfection, but if the food isn't cutting it, unfortunately no amount of great service and atmosphere can make up for it."

"The atmosphere was charming, the food expertly prepared, nice area for parking. It is an interesting place to take guests to the area, but there were few choices for a vegetarian diner."

"I really thought this place wasn't worth the prices they charged. My shrimp and steak tips were both really overcooked. The clam chowder was really tasty and gluten-free, which was a treat. Also, someone in my dining party ordered the buffalo wings, which were excellent. I might return for the chowder and wings, but nothing else."

"We enjoyed a wonderful Saturday afternoon late lunch at the Summer Shack and it was great. I had the clam chowder and my wife had fish tacos. The corn bread with the meal was excellent as was the coffee. The taco and clam chowder were very good, my chowder was a bit light on the clams yet heavy on the potatoes but the flavors were very good and not too much cream or butter. The taco was wonderful, everything was fresh. The chocolate banana cream pie had a fabulous crust. The atmosphere was wonderfully relaxed and very informal. Extremely attentive service. We even saw Jasper. If we were hungrier the fish entrees looked fantastic and fresh."

"The new menu is far more interesting. Lots of items in the lower price ranges, and it appears that they have found new spices and herbs and are being more creative with the components that create a dish. We enjoyed our meal more than in the recent past. Nicely done."

"We dined at SS recently for my husband's birthday. He was craving some fried clams and chowder and that's what he ordered. He enjoyed it very much... He even got a soft serve ice cream cone at the end of the meal! A casual relaxing meal... And Jasper White himself was standing a few feet away chatting it up ! (The waiter was very attentive and efficient) Overall, we enjoyed the evening!"

"I had a great meal with a few friends the other night. Our booth was cozy and low lit, which made the massive restaurant feel quite different. I don't think I'd ever been there at night other than at the bar. The oysters were delicious, fresh and presented nicely. I got the grilled shrimp dinner with fries and coleslaw. It was all yummy - and I got two long skewers of shrimp. I suppose it makes sense because there's little overhead for fries and coleslaw, but I was still pleased with the portion size and shared with my dining partner. My other friends seemed happy with their meals. The craft beer options were good and served in an ice cold glass - my favorite. I'll definitely go back again for other occasions."

"I had ordered Schrod and was served something other than schrod. The fish had the consistancy of lobster and was attached to what had to be cartilage or bones of the fish. It also was not cooked. It was gross. I told my server that what he served was not schrod and was not cooked. He brought back the same piece of fish that was cooked but still inedible."

"One of the best for excellent seafood, even though the space feels more industrial than summer shack. Really nice selection of oysters, many delicious lobster options. Easy for weight watchers to have a delicious guilt free meal. Perfect fried clams. Cocktails also well done. Lots of free parking, unusual around here, and nice that its also on the Red Line (Alewife station)."

"I've been here three times, and it hasn't wowed me yet. I rated the food as good because my son and husband said their meals were good (scallops and mahi mahi.) I had the almond and parmesan crusted fluke which was fried. I could taste neither the almonds or parmesan, and the fish was slightly overcooked. The corn bread was nothing to write home about. Perhaps it would have been better if they were warm. I hadn't been here for a few years but decided to try it again after a friend said she had a good meal there. Maybe I am just picking the wrong item from the menu, but I don't have a desire to go back."

"This is our second time in a week. The seafood ranges from the normal varieties to include some items that I don't usually see (smelts, trout). Our server was friendly, and very professional. Our dinners consisted of chowder, and fried seafood and fish. All came out hot, tasty, and the fried items were very fresh. Deserts were inexpensive and all made in-house. We plan to stop in again on our next visit down to Cambridge. As a last thought, the cornbread is spectacular!"

"Food was good not great. We started with mussels far diavolo. The mussels were rather small and far diavolo sauce was okay. I'd get it again but with the wine sauce. I had fish cakes and they were very good, my wife had fish tacos and she enjoyed them. It's kid friendly, the kids had corn dogs and got to touch a live lobster at the viewing area. Overall it's good and we will return."

"I've eaten here twice before, this time with people who have been several times; nothing but good things to say about the previous experiences. This time, two complaints: the steamers were undercooked (and caused me some distress the next day), and the server plopped our dinners on the table before we had finished the appetizers. The waiter had to rush over and clear the space for the arriving food. Not a good night from the kitchen. I would eat here again, hoping that this vist was an anomaly."
